    Is it possible for anybody to escape prison from Guantanamo Bay? What makes Guantanamo Bay so impossible to escape from?
    Guantanamo Bay Naval Station is located on southeastern Cuba, a small 45 square mile American military station on lease from Cuba since 1903. In the past it has been an important naval station, ensuring US military forces remained close to the Caribbean and its many vitally important trade routes. However in 2002 the US began construction of a detention camp where it would house suspected terrorists that it ensnared in its global war on terror. But just how secure is this facility? Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're asking, is it possible to escape from Guantanamo Bay?

    As a soldier who was stationed there, I can safely state, barring a full on assault from the sea, there is no way anyone will escape there. There are human eyes on the prisoners 100% of the time. And, not just one set. Usually, about 20. ALL the time. So, besides defeating locks (which only happens in movies), and sneaking around a prison (where cameras are monitoring all the time), you get to the outer perimeter fence. There are guard towers that are manned ALL the time. And each tower can see two other towers' sectors. So, someone approaching a fence, can easily see them doing so. First, the area inside the prison is clear-so you can easily see anyone. Second, we had giant spotlights to aid in seeing. Third, we had thermal imagers to check when we werent using a spotlight. Fourth, there is sparse-if any-vegetation anywhere near the prison. Or, in most of Gitmo. Its all saguaro cactus and stunted trees. Hardly cover for anyone. And, where the prison is located-there is zero vegetation. Literally, nothing to hide behind.
    But, lets assume someone got out. Where are they going to go? Its miles to the Cuban border. A border that still has mines (and, on occasion, you hear them detonate from the deer). You can jump into the ocean, but, well, swim to where? There are sharks near the Cuban border, as there is a meat processing plant that dumps waste into the river that runs into the ocean. Sharks are regularly seen there. Not to mention-most of the prisoners cannot swim (they arent near bodies of water, there was never a need for them to swim). You can run through miles of desert, in flip flops, but you arent going to get anywhere. You cannot steal a plane, as the only airport isnt attached to the main island. You could steal a car...but, where are you going to drive to? The gates?
    So, no. There really is no escaping. Which is why it was chosen.

    • @oldsoldier181
      @oldsoldier181 Год назад +1

      @BlackLivesMatter There is a 20' fence beyond the mines. Then, a 1/2 mile canal separating that, with a strong rip tide. Which is, again, infested with sharks, due to the constant dumping of offal from the meat packing plants. There is, literally, nowhere to go. It is flat rock, the prison itself is on an ancient coral bed, so you cant dig (not to mention the prison itself is elevated off of it). There is a 60' cliff behind it, with no beach (3 soldiers have committed suicide there, at least-that I know of) and rocks at the bottom. The only other way is through the entire base security zone-which, well, a guy in orange pajamas is going to be noticed. Not to mention, there being guard towers that are manned 24/7, about every 100'. Even stealing a car isnt going to get you anywhere, as Gitmo is situated on an island in and of itself. The only airport serving it, is on a separate island, across a channel, who's only access is by old PT landing craft. So, COULD you escape prison? Theoretically, yes. But, with literally nowhere to go (there are only 3 landing beaches-ALL manmade, where a boat could in theory pull someone out-but they are heavily patrolled), they would be caught relatively quickly. I mean, even getting into the foothills-with 100 degree weather, and no natural water sources, you would die of exposure within days.

    • @oldsoldier181
      @oldsoldier181 Год назад +1

      @BlackLivesMatter Never been to the canal, but I will assume there is no beach, due to the sharks. And, seeing as none of the prisoners likely ever swam (I mean, they were desert dwellers....), their chances of swimming are pretty small. As to sharks not being hungry-its a 24/7 feeding frenzy. They literally swim up the canal, into brackish water, for the offal. And its constant. The locals dont go there either (I mean, why would they-its polluted). So, even IF, hypothetically, they got across TO the fence, without being shot or captured, climbed OUR side of the fence, without being shot, made it through the minefield, without detonating anything, climbed CUBAS fence, without being shot, and magically made it down into the canal-and avoided all the sharks-they would be carried out to sea, on the current. Your chances of a successful escape, are zero. An ESCAPE? I suppose it possible, but HIGHLY unlikely (they have tried, a few times-even a captured SAS defector tried, 3x-and he is TRAINED in it), given that there is literally nowhere to go.

    • @oldsoldier181
      @oldsoldier181 Год назад

      @BlackLivesMatter Ah..they could also be rescued by aliens too. Or some rogue force comes in, like in a movie, kills all the guards, and magically rescues them.
      There is REALM of possibility, then, there is THEORETIC possibility. You are working well within theoreticals.
      As you have never been there, you can second guess me all you like.
      I spent a year there. If I am telling you that there is no possible way to escape, then, there is likely no possible way to escape.
      Unless, of course, you are some rando BLM person, coming up with hypotheticals that are baseless.....

    For the record, Gitmo was not built in Cuba for the sake of convenience. It was built on foreign soil so the military-industrial complex (MID) could illegally torture their detainees out of the prying eyes of the public and/or media and without much fear of consequence. Unfortunately, it seems to have worked incredibly well for them.
    It is widely known that torture is an ineffective method at extracting truthful information and, instead, is better at forcing people to tell them what they WANT to hear. Obviously, this results in many innocent people admitting guilt merely to stop the torture. Hence why it's completely illegal in the first place.

    As someone that has worked as a Fire fighting and fire detection inspector in a power plant, I can tell you that the alarm thingy is true. Most of the time it is triggered by other people and it gets really really annyoing to deal with, especially after a certain amount of time. There is also the risk of such a detector being faulty, which they would know, but might not be able to fix right away as they might need a programmer. So it could take days and even a week to fix one such problem of a detector not working, or being triggered all the time that they decide to temporarily disable it.

      @@crummyoldbreadman They fixed it up??!! Shit when I was there it was hard to distingish between my ball and a rock. Most of the time we just decided to play with rocks and crappy clubs. The course was gnarly when I was there in 07-08. I didn't have much off time though since I worked camp 5 and other camps i cannot disclose.

    Guatmo is the highest level security correctional facility in maybe the world. there are constant 24-hour patrols, officers in constant foot patrol inside the units and cells, and they have a camera, microphones, and infrared detection all over the place. They also have motion sensors and vibration detection. There is no way out. It is not impossible but it is highly improbable that a prisoner will escape.

    Smh I hate this place. They pay for turning in "terrorists". You can literally accuse a random person of being a terrorist and get paid for it. Then that person can be kept there indefinitely, without being charged with a single thing and no trial. Just sadistic torture on a daily basis. Sickening.

    I've been to Guantanamo bay and have seen camp delta and in order to be able to fly there at all you would have to have a military ID. And if you manage to fly there you wouldn't be able to go to that part of the base as there is a check point on the road to the camps. In order to be allowed passed the check point you have to have another ID sponsored by and officer or someone allowed to that side. And if you sat around tripping alarms someone would notice as the place is like a small town and there are always people driving or walking around outside. Once you got out there would be no where to go because all around Guantanamo is like a desert as well as border guards, the Cuban soldiers, a land mine zone, and the ocean. If you left by ocean you would be seen as there are 50 cal gun placements overlooking the water and coast guard patrols.
