- You’ve probably read, watched, or heard something controversial about the Guantanamo Bay detention camp since it started housing suspected terrorists in 2002. This past year, most media has centered around hunger strikes-which is one of the most well-known ways that prisoners protest their indefinite detainment-and the subsequent force-feeding they endure. Last year, there were over 100 detainees on hunger strike. But what about the detainees that are eating?
Fortunately for them, there's Sam, the cheery middle-aged Korean chef that takes pride in each meal she whips up. Sam makes chicken eight different ways, prepares both Halal and Kosher meals, and bakes an impressive assortment of cookies. And every ingredient used in her kitchen comes from … you guessed it … America.
Our host Gianna Toboni spent a few days last March on a riveting tour of Gitmo, from the cellblock to the prison library to the local mini golf course and the fascinating commissary. We don't know what was more surprising-the huge python that we encountered, or the interesting politics of the camp's kitchen.

Korean mommies, and grandmas are so sweet. I live in a military town with a lot of Koreans. I started buying kimchi, and a few other Korean foods that I developed a taste for at a local market. The ladies that work there are so awesome, and they have gotten to know me, and my habits. When I come in they already know what I want, and they start packaging my groceries, and always have some fresh Korean pancakes as well as a big smile, and hug for me.

I'm not really sure what you're asking, but I think you're asking me if I go into the store to hit on them. No. Not only am I happily married man, but so are the women that work there, and they are all quite a bit older than me. I go in the store to buy traditional Korean foods that I enjoy eating, and cannot purchase at large chain grocery stores.

To be real right now; even though the person who runs the food is delightful it feels patronizing to say she has a 'blissful ignorance.' Just because she has an accent and enjoys her job. That doesn't mean you would have the right to patronize her intelligence. She most likely knows better than anyone the hunger strikes, dosent mean she's 'ignorant' just because she's displaying to you how shes meant to do her job. Not everyone has the advantage of a politically 'woke' job. My main thought was that food was shown as example/evidence of how good prisoners are threated, but simultaneously omitted more important aspects of their existence such as "tortures, humiliation, many years imprison without the trial and other human right stuff".

Gichskakensamlx What I don’t understand is why a foreign national is running a military kitchen. I’m sure she’s a nice person, but who contracted someone outside the military. The military has plenty of chefs & cooks, yet why her? My best guess is that the kitchen isn’t military, but by contract.

I've been studying in the US for the last 3 years and I'm constantly frustrated by such high amount of violence and crime. I know that gun control is arguably the primary reason for it but that's no excuse for such high homicide rates. To be honest, I don't know what I'm even getting at. I'm just another frustrated person living in the US and seeing that these criminals/terrorists receiving relatively good treatment when there's are hundreds of thousands if not millions of people on the streets in the US.

But most Americans are obese so they've had there fair share of food.
They're obese because they cannot afford the proper sources of nutrients like fresh fruits, and vegetables, and they live on cheaper sources of foods like processed food which high in fats and sugars.

The plain fact is that Muslims can eat Kosher food and know it is overqualified for Halall whereas Jews cannot eat Halal food because it doesn't pass a mashgiach's test for being Kosher. Hence, Kosher is cleaner than Halal. No big deal. Many Halal things ARE Kosher. Just not all. It's nothing to get excited about. Feeding prisoners well you intend to interrogate for information is nothing new. Police do it all the time during their initial interrogation of a suspect. Are you more likely to get information from a well fed prisoner or one you starved or fed dog crap to?

I've unfortunately had the experience of having briefly been held in what would be considered a "nicer" jail here in the US, and the the food is unrecognizable slop in microscopic portions. I also know people who have served tours at GTMO, and it's not just the food that is a higher standard than our domestic jails and prisons, the medical care, cells, nearly everything is held to a higher standard, all because of the PR and optics. How come you never see anyone getting nearly as upset about how we treat our own citizens as they do these detainees? Somethings to think about.
Explain the torture and 24 deaths in GITMO? Don’t downplay the horrors of GITMO by comparing it to your prisons in your own country, at least the people imprisoned in your country have gone through a trial and have been convicted u like the GITMO detainees who’ve never had a trial and are wrongly imprisoned for years then released after going through torture.

I’m pragmatic enough to understand why Gitmo exists. I don’t have a strong opinion. Call it a necessary evil. The additional quality is likely a pseudo CYA illogical move.
Jails in the US depend on Federal, State or private. Likely, the quality goes in that order.
Well fed prisons have better food too. This is military so they kinda have higher expectations like in the Geneva convention. Which obviously isn’t followed at gtmo for other reasons but food is pretty easy to do. It also helps when these people regularly go on hunger strikes obviously for other reasons.

They have fees to pay when they get released. That isn't a free ride. Sure, some of those people in there are bad...really bad but theres also a good amount who are innocent and that's been exposed at length for many years now.
If you get fed this well at Gaum, who wouldn't want to be in prison? It has and more food options and 24 hour surveillance?
They should make a movie like ‘4 Brothers’ but instead of the mom getting killed, the head cook of the most hardcore prison gets shot and the top inmates hunt the guy down somehow

Bruh.... I’ve been to jail twice & the food is horrible yet we ship our food over there and it’s better than some school lunches here in the States I mean the food in our jail system is not food. I worked in the kitchen and mannnnn lemme tell you Smh America is fuxked up

I highly doubt that they do those types of meals for inmates in there they will probably do anything to make it look humanitarian in front of the camera

I'm all for humane treatment, even for murderers, but... If you give them decent quality food and they don't eat it due to a "hunger strike" I would politely bring them a tray of food twice a day and just wait. They WILL eat or choose to starve. Why force feed anyone?? Offer clean and nutritious food and drink and wait...
its prob more trouble to deal with a terrorist who becomes a martyr by starving himself then to just use a feeding tube
