Caught in a snowstorm at 16580 feet in India - brutal day

- By far the scariest & most intense day on a motorbike I’ve had outside of extreme desert racing! In the Himalayas you have to plan for the unexpected! It is time for part two in the multi part Himalaya India Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle adventure series - • Himalayas adv adventur...
We arrived to the Shinkula Pass military check point at 15.30...the friendly soldier quickly told us we were too late. The weather was pulling in & strong winds & snow would make it dangerous & inpassable. The 2-hour ascent would mean a 17.30pm summit in the worst of the blizzard. After explaining that we had suitable equipment including Mosko heated jackets, his worry faded & encouragement followed.
The next 4 hours intensified by the minute. As we climbed the altitude the terrain escalated. Snow on either side, deep melt running down the rocky path with treacherous slippery stones & bolders hidden in the currents. And then we got to the ice & winds. As lead bike I pushed on calling back warnings into our Cardo Intercoms. But as trail blazer I had no warnings myself & as I hit some slushy brown snow my wheels hit the sheet ice below. Boom. I was down. Thankfully I’m accustomed to falling & lept clear. Even more thankfully the Himalayan is a robust ‘Vanessa-proof’ beast & as the Shinkula pass was being smashed by a snow blizzard I’m grateful for no damage from my momentary lack of talent.
Reaching the 16,580 summit it was full sideways snow & -4 plus wind chill temperatures. The decent had it’s own challenges. Despite being mostly “tarmac” (landside damaged) the heavy fog, snow that turned to rain & strong winds with a lot of ground water meant for a slow & wet ride down.
Arriving to a Darcha homestay we had an warn welcome around a toasty fire in the grandma’s bedroom, before delicious food. The Himalayas as definitely living up to expectations! A trip of a lifetime!

A little tip for wet boots and dry socks. Use a plastic carrier bag between your socks and boots. They take up no space and are a godsend if your feet get wet!

Another cracking episode on the Himalayas Vanessa. The bikes (and riders) doing a fantastic job. As for accommodation when stopping most of my biking touring was with a tent back in the day so having a home stay is luxury in comparison. Later touring I have stayed at places that I would have preferred staying in a tent in Europe . Anyway a great adventure continues and I look forward to the next episode.
Haha I hear you one tent re accommodation. I think at this time of year in the Himalayas it would be far too cold to tent plus means so much more kit and finding food etc. I'm glad we homestayed

Yea seem like stock, and it's difficult to navigate through thin ice and rainy swamp type roads up there.
They also chose those specific roads so, could have changed the tyres, although you could just navigate slowly or take some falls along the way 😅
Haha yeah I'd agree. Royal Enfield said they were the perfect choice but I think for the few miles of Shinkula it was maybe not 🤣

That's a fair comment. Wish the racing I normally do my body is so use to the extremes which means pregnancy recommendations, especially early in, is to keep doing what your body is use to. Hehe do I am ❤️ there's a happy little adventure baby in there hehe

Hello. How much are the home stays. Please and why do you ride with short ankle boots , why not wear half or full leg boots. Socks. If damp roll something on then from top to toe, a couple of times , That way you reduce the damp . In house or may be tent , hang up. ( heat rises ). Not perfect in morning but better Wish You Well
Yeah not the best boots for the snow. Ace for the rest of the trip lol. Certainly didn't need full enduro boots but something a bit longer would have been good. Good point on thr wet socks. Sadly we only had what we carried so nothing to roll them in. Home stays are very very basic! For 3 with dinner and breakfast it was 3500 ❤️

As an Indian who lived in Italy for 6 years and then returned to India, I can't digest unfiltered/non-bottled water and get the runs every time, I have tried local unfiltered water. I'm baffled how you guys are managing with unfiltered water like that.

I think the tree line and greenery level ends from above 13,600 feet or so. In case of issues, always approach any soldier. The Himalayas are full of Indian army personnel. Full of helpful soldiers and officers moving in vehicles and trucks of the Indian army and other similar paramilitary forces. They may call their bosses first to get permission. They are always ready to help, if she is in the middle of nowhere up i n the mountains. ordinary soldiers and officers are usually ready to help and are allowed to assist stranded bikers and anyone else in case of problems. Provided they have time.
Very true, everyone was so lovely and happy to help others when in need and also ensuring we had the right equipment for a safe journey was of utmost importance to them which was lovely ❤️

We all learned from "long way down" that when you have wet boots you get plastic bags, like shopping bags and put them over your feet before going into the boot it will keep your feet from getting wet. Now I am going to say something bratty so you can get angry with me, I know riding in wet weather is something new to you since you spend all your time in the desert racing and someone probably had to explain to you what the water coming from the sky was so I hope this helps. 😆😆😁

You have used a drone in this video. If your drone weighs more than 250g and you have not registered it, then avoid flying it in populated areas or anywhere where it draws attention.If you have registered it, do not use it near any military post and always fly it below a height of 200m.
