If you really wanted to spice up your bass, since a lot of stuff in jazz is based around a 2-5-1 chord progression, make the bass go from D then to G then to C, which is the root note. If you think what you're sampling is a 2-5-1 then go ahead and use that, but if you're not really sure, just go with what he's doing here :D

Did you route your compressed kick to sidechain to the track that your sample is on? If so make sure to turn the threshold down and play around with the ratio, you should get the same effect
