- YOOOOO! I partnered up with Epic Games & Aquiris Studios to work on there newest game Horizon Chase 2! In this video, I show you guys a full behind the scenes process on how I made music for one of their levels. This is my first time composing for video games and I had a blast making this!

I guess it is input, not really guidance. The barry guy I assume was a part of the team who made the game, these were obv his opinions. I think the vocals in the background definetly worked, whereas Barry wish he didn't put them in, but also, he old af so that probably has something to say 😂
@@bobaplaysgames4019 "the Barry guy" is the main composer for the franchise according to 13:31. I'm not sure why they needed to have someone else do this level instead of him, but he would definitely be the person who would know how well it fit in with the rest of the game. But the devs liked it enough to put it in the game so good enough.
I love the reality check ending😂❤. Feedback can't always be a nice thing, even for Simon the Simon himself
let's be real he doesn't really make this type of music ever so it's understandable he won't be that good at something like this even if he's obviously a much more talented producer in the genres that he specified in than the video game composers. Everyone got their strengths and weaknesses

I mean, Barry is way older than Simon. His styles and values definitely differ from Simon's.
It's the hardest part about this production thing 😂 I have been like producing for an year or so and the critical feedback always hurts I have to try to not take the feedback personal .
@pixssassin I try not to take offence to criticism either. I just think "You don't like this piece, I'll try another one."
And if I were to compose for a film or a game, there'd be a deadline. And if the director keeps messing around, I'd be like "I know you didn't like this piece, and you didn't like the previous three. But unless you agree on something tonight, I won't be able to send it to the mastering engineers tomorrow. So you'll have to bear with me while I come up with something." And the director may eventually like it.

@@cleverhardy5230 I don't think because Barry is way older than Simon, it's just that Barry is a master as Simon said, Barray knows better than Simon, and all the points he said are valid, I didn't like the vocals too, they are just terrible and don't fit in the game's music (Simon is more like a hip hop beat maker) and I've never heard these types of vocals in a game soundtrack, the bass is great but the melody is so reptetive (just the same 6 notes every 10 bars or something), it's not repetitive, but I feel like Simon didn't even write one, the game devs do care a lot about a linear good melody , a melody that tells a story, and Simon didn't even try but as I said Simon is more of a beat maker, and that's just my opinion, still Simon is a good music prodcuer

as a software engineer i actually relate to the ending.
so you made a good song at first, but then the client made MANY changes, then once it's complete someone else says they don't like it etc. but that final song wasn't really your song, it was severely altered to the client's needs
you putting in the notes from the main composer says a lot about you as a creative!! well done!!!

As a composer this is like watching myself lol That's cool they give you all that useful feedback. Sometimes clients just like what I make and I feel weird.

Great video! An unexpected ending but I think if that is your one of your first few times producing gaming music, it was pretty spot on.

The thing I immediately noticed is that he didn't have a video of the gameplay running along with the track. That's so essential to making music for film and games. You need the reference just like you need references while mixing.
Barry's accent is something, there's like scottish with a bit of american in there

I'm a beginner developer and this is inspires me a lot. The way of dealing with musitions and the work for a big company is so amazing, i mean i know its hard but seeing you dealing with such a big company like Epic Games is so inspiring.

Its crazy how much goes into making one song for a level in a game. That's why I like games with good music because besides it sounding good you know it may have gone through some shit to get this good. Nice job man.

Crazy thing about the the guy at the end is it’s all up to taste , doesn’t necessarily mean he’s right or wrong. Cause all though he didn’t like the vocal chops . That was one of my favorite parts of the track. It’s really up to taste

I know EPIC is a Triple A developer but the game they got you on board with is out dated looking as all hell and
I already know Servida is ready to conquer even scores from a game such as Final Fantasy, or Zelda, or even
something like Resident Evil! Still a huge step Simon! It's incredible to have followed you for all these years
and see you tackle so many unique ventures that have came your way!
Damn, for your first time producing this type of arcade-y music, you killed it! Lot's of really good ideas with the melodies and progressions, gave me chills at one point. I can see where Barry is coming from with the points he mentioned, esp. the vocal chops. They didn't quite match the vibe of the game, I think RL had too much of an influence on you there haha. Nonetheless, really appreciate you showing the whole progress of this experience, it was a nice change up! My goal is to get at least close to where you are in production. The ending shows you the different level that actual screen scorers are on. Any experience composer would say that the arrangement was TOO predictable and simple. This is not a surprise since Simon is primarily a hip hop producer in which simplicity is best in that genre. But in vgm/film music, it’s probably the biggest mistake most beginners make because their natural tendency is to add on top of the track every 2/4/8 bars etc. However, the reason why this was game-ready was because of the overall quality of the instruments, samples, mix and sound design (which is skills Simon obtained from being a highly skilled producer).
With all that being said, most producers (especially the fl studio ones) would’ve failed miserably at this project which goes to show the overall musicianship Simon has.
Personally I am very motivated by your video. I would definitely like to go down that route as a music producer to focus on video games the same way that you have actually stepped into that. Share a video on how one can actually approach video game publishers.
