In this video I will attempt to learn how to make music as a complete beginner. I don't play any instruments and I don't know anything about music really. The goal is to be able to make video game music for my indie game.
This is Punch A Bunch Devlog 25.

I'm someone who has been making music for quite a while and I can say that yes, the piano lessons definintely have helped, the random fumbling around would have been awful if you didn't know what you were doing. There's a big difference between feeling you're just pressing random notes and actually pressing random notes. Great job!
Would you recommend learning piano for a beginner with not a lot of budget? 🤔
i dunno, I just taught myself very simple music theory and I’ve been learning more since them. also a lot of my favorite artists did that too.
Awsome
Well I do music at school and I play the violin. I am not sure if I can create music.
(Some of my attempts were good some of them are horrible)
Even the word “instinct” is explainable by your few lessons!
as a producer myself it's amazing to see how you are improving on making music without any experience, i've used fl studio for like 3 - 4 years and still struggle sometimes to make good music, good work dude
@Just Another Galaxy its up to preference, litterly just look at one and pick one, either one works
@Just Another Galaxy ableton has a wayy better workflow but fl has some epic plugins
i personally prefer ableton
@Just Another Galaxy i have tried ableton too but i think fl is better
@Just Another Galaxy tried both and I prefer fl, even in terms of workflow. It's just 100% up to personal preference, you can make amazing music with either one of them. It's much more about the artist. In terms of plugins the fl EFFECT plugins are great, but i don't think the generator plugins of any DAW are really enough to make professional music. Don't worry tho, there's a lot of free stuff on the internet, i especially recommend Spitfire LABS. Ok why did i even type all that, you were literally just asking which daw is better 😅
Same
"There's something quite unsettling with staring into an empty project that is seemingly staring back at me" Honestly I think this is one of the universal issues creatives end up dealing with
Creatives need to exercise their improv skills. Once you find a good lead that problem disappears
Just start?
Huh. For me the hardest part is finishing a song. I just love coming up with new melodies, but putting them together is the hard part.
As someone who makes a living writing music for films, TV and videogames, I can say that your process is honestly not too different from that of a professional! I'm seriously impressed by how fast you picked up on the chops, and I can see that you have a really good understanding (or maybe just innate sense) of how music works both linearly (progression) and vertically (instrumentation and harmony). I've been following the channel for some time and never would have expected you to actually do the music as well!
Thank you that's really motivating to hear!! :)
@@Pontypants are you gonna put him on the epik pegboa? (just a question)
Just so you know, if this is your first game ever, and you’ve only been working in it for 2 years, your doing great.
Seeing the process of you learning how to code the different physics for things, the attack animations, making the music, and coming up with ideas for the boss gimmicks and appearances, it made me realize how hard it actually is to make a game. And you should be proud.

I think that fast paced 8-bit chiptune song ( 16:07 ) would be amazing for the trailer on the steam page! Besides that, all the songs are amazing and I can't wait to see them all in game!
I agree with that statement, sounds perfect actually for a trailer
Absolutely!
For sure I can already imagine it

Thanks for warning. I'm actually messing with this scamer right now. He seems really dumb.
That happened to me luckilly i didn't click on it.
I think the Viking song could benefit from being slower (maybe half bpm). of course its your song in the end but something to consider (alongside dynamics).
In the 'Making An Action Song' chapter of the video, when you are starting out with the slap base, you start with like half notes, then quarter notes, and then end up on eighth notes... I think it would be a good idea to try experimenting with a similar melody, using the quarter notes from before, that then quickens to the eighth notes when the boxing match starts heating up. You can transition between these melodies based on the amount of punches being thrown or health of the characters or some similar idea. It might be worth a shot!
Kinda like BotW's combat music, it starts normally, then heats up and more instruments are thrown in when the battle gets harder, and ends with a triumphant harmony.
Interesting idea! That could be really cool!
Like wii tanks!

legit sounds like an alt megalovania
Wow, as a "composer" for several years, I love to see your philosophy approaching music production. You seem to take a lot of joy and you make tremendous progress which is impressive. You've got a real creative gift in general. It's clearly sounds good for your game, congratulations :)
I love how your melodies connect with eachother. It doesn't feel like "A part and then B part" it feels like an ongoing connected piece elaborating on a musical idea
I agreee
Thank you
@@Pontypants What was the music software you used for the piano at 0:47 ?

Idea for music:
The main battle theme could be changed in slight variations for different fighters
Toby - no change just regular
Doug - Adding chain or metal sounds
Monk - adds… humming?? I have no clue honestly.
Cookie - no change just regular
Viking - Adds Viking styled drums
(Medium diffculty bosses 1-4) - Haven’t been shown
Sumo - Stomping or pounding sounds
Wrestler - make it more intense? No clue
Astronaut - Scientfic or spacey? Music
Huricann - eagle noises.
Puppet - Make it sound slightly creepier, maybe a musicbox?
(Other two hard bosses) - not shown yet
@@slowbrofriend6526 i think a perfect place for the eagle sound would be 16:35 when it pauses for a sec
You're so insanely talented. A genius game developer, RUclipsr, and musician. Jealous!
😀 Look whose talking, Game developer RUclipsr, Graphic designer, Animator. Looking forward to your next game Thomas
@Frogger I mean it's his first game. What exactly should they have played??
@Frogger It has happened in the past so why not now?
@Frogger 🙄
@Frogger Nah bro this convo is a fools errand you're literally going back and changing what you said lol
If you do not have the time to finish a complete song for each character, definitely still try to squeeze a sort of slow creepy theme into the puppet enemy. I think that would fit really well.

Music is always fun to hear especially when it’s for a game
as a producer myself in very impressed with how fast you picked this up, i really like the tunes you made in this video and if i heard them without context i wouldnt think it was a newbie who made them!
You got it man. I'm a jazz pianist and I've been learning how to produce music and I tend to overcomplicate everything. Turns out, repetative and simple is actually a really good way to make your songs memorable, catchy, and just.. more succesfull. I'm actually working on making my songs more simple, so keep up the simple stuff! Your doing great!
This man is the by far one of the most dedicated RUclipsrs in the game industry today! He has stuck with his project since day one and has committed to it even while changing jobs and moving. Ponty has made this game truly a part of the RUclips community and deserves every bit of attention. Congrats on the progress!
Facts
@@deltapi8859 yeah 😄
It needs some crowd noise! Great work, it's really impressive to see you making everything! I think you did a great job on the music!
Exactly my thoughts, wanna hear the crowd cheer on good hits!
Was thinking the same when he showed the segment where big blows were being landed. A cheer or shock chant from the audience would add a ton to the ambience.
Imagine losing and even the virtual crowd starts booing
imagine the crowd cheering to the music as you land blows in beat of the music. Then when you're being beaten up, the crowd's rhythm breaks away and starts booing
I was about to say the same thing
As someone who's been casually making music for a few years, this video really inspires me and reminds me of what can be done with just a computer and a MIDI keyboard. Your music is great so far, good luck with the rest of the game!
Tbh, the hard part of mudic production is the sound part. Monetarily and quality wiise
These songs are actually awesome, so catchy and a solid identity/personality for each one. Super inspirational!!!
A game like this NEEDS some sort of iconic and unique boss themes, I would love to see a custom one for the marionette. Keep up the great work. Wishlist gang rise up!
I recommend not to add too much element to your song. It's easy to get lost adding stuff and make it too messy. It happens to me all the time. Also, is really good to have a main idea as the theme of the game and have something from that theme in every song. It give the soundtrack more coherence. Then you can play with how you change the theme and with witch sounds you choose to fit the vibe of a particular battle or ambient.
i agree a bit too much going on, better melodies > more layers. also felt that none of the songs really gave a boxing vibe. also the pan flute was a big no for me
that being said he did do all of this with minimal time and experience and i totally respect that. and the piano lessons are going a long way
I don’t really think every track needs to share a thematic element. They could be coherent in other ways. With games like shovel knight it’s the homogenous 8bit texture
@@dennisdeez123 you're right, the songs can share other characteristics, the point is that they have to sound like they belong to the same video game.
Lots of ideas: An intro animation that introduces each fighter coming from either end of the arena with fire and smoke and a little musical cue, more emphasis on the rubbery and bouncy animation, and punchout inspiration
Oh, holy crap, I LOVE the one with the PANFLUTE! That is phenomenal and it rocks out perfectly with your game! So, I think you are writing wonderful music for your game, and I think you have a natural musical gift. You don't need anyone's help, just keep doing what you're doing, you're doing great.
It's a scam, don't listen to the bot.
@@IBeWaddl yeah real shocker so many people are winning prizes.
Forget Vegas this random thing on RUclips is the real prize I should care about xd.
I don’t know if this is what your already planning to do but you should definitely make a track for each boss so it’s not repetitive and so it adds variety to each boss.
YESS I AGREEEE
maybe the ouppet boss can have some more horror music and maybe the uhh in the mountain boss guy can had music like panflute and more traidional like? Idk whatbim saying 😂
Like how punch out remixes the main theme to fit the boss?
@@autisticandproudsnephew3636 could be a remix but I was thinking a completely different song like how hollow knight does it with their bosses
I think the music sounds amazing! But to maybe make some of the fights a bit more dramatic, it would be cool if the signature moves had their own little song or maybe a loud sound effect. For example in the Viking fight, maybe when he did his signature attack, a Viking horn would sound or something. Love these dev logs ponty! Keep it up!
Like a motif
I think a sound effect would work really well there
Sounds great! Doing every aspect of the game by yourself is a hard road, but it can feel very rewarding too! There's nothing better than the feeling of surprising yourself with what you can achieve.
Never missed a devlog! I love how you share your thoughts and your feelings that you’ve experienced in your “journey” letting people immerse in your experience

hey, I just wanted to say that I appreciate how much more mature your videos are now compared to your old ones. this was excellent and inspiring
I’ve actually begun thinking about getting into game development, and watching your series has made me fallen in love with the process. I understand that game development is not easy by any means, but just watching your game progress and get better with each passing session is just so rewarding because of all the hard work you put in. Your game looks incredible, and the music you composed is great, and I can’t wait for Punch A Bunch to release on Steam!
As a game music producer myself i think you did a pretty good job! It was especially cool to see how with every new track you became noticably better. I also believe that the piano lessons definitely have helped, even if just subconsciously.
As a former music producer, you learned how to make music suprisingly fast! Keep going!
The music is pretty good for your first shot at it. Knowing scales and a little bit of music composition definitely helps in creating music. Good job my dude!
as a musician of 10 years, this is really great to see you're already in great habits playing wise and most importantly you're inspiration is very clearly catchy video game music which develops a better ear for pitch and progressions from early on. you've got the foundation down brilliantly. plus your arrangement is exactly as it should be. nothing become to dull or uninteresting. keep up the good work. its a great skill to have in game dev
I think the chilled out song should be for the menu. I dunno it just seems perfect for it. Amazing work.
Same
Might not be worth looking into but a different font might make the game look cool, something a little rounder and bubbly like everything else if you could find one. Besides that I can’t wait for this to be out!
Yea a more cartoony font would be better imo
i dont know how following your game dev journey hasnt been enough motivation for me up until this point, but seeing you learn to make music is inspiring for real.
Love how nintendo-feeling all of the soundtracks are. That sort of whimsical and childlike playfulness is a great fit for Punch A Bunch I feel. Love the title song especially the tropical sort of vibes. Wishlisted, can't wait for the release!
A little thing, I always like it when a game uses one main Motiv also called a Leitmotiv, where the composer uses a base template and plays a new instrument and melody over it.
Also remember a lot of games use the main theme to represent the player so a triumphent version for winning a league could fit that plays after the winning melody.
The Viking boss music is pretty good and fitting for one of your first tries!
Well done picking all this up so fast. I write video game music every day and I still get that feeling of dread when I open up an empty project too, even after years!
I think that chilled out song you made would fit really well with that palm tree map you made. A real beach theme would go really well!
All the music is fire! Great job you've done really well for a first time. Cant wait to play the game its just been setting in my wish list for a while now
This series always has me begging for more uploads. Keep up the amazing work!
This is really impressive! For someone with zero music experience this is really inspiring
You're doing a great job! As a musician and composer myself I can affirm that learning and making music are two different beasts but you're doing an amazing job of learning so far! Really amazing progress, keep it up!
I think different songs for different opponents is just a fantastic idea. The song about the Vikings is on point. I can't wait to see the music for the other antagonists. I know it's very difficult to make a song for each character in their own style, but it's worth the trouble, trust me!
Loved this video! I can't believe you created all those songs without knowing much about music. Incredible! 👏👏Can't wait for the game to come out 🤩💕
Thanks Sara! 😁😋
Fellow amateur pianist and DAW-tinkerer here - your progression from first attempt is pretty inspiring. Some of this would be at home in an original Crash Bandicoot or Spyro game. Absolutely love it :D
I love your melodies and you have a great way of expressing certain feelings in your music that definitely gives off retro video game vibes. I think your "victory song" would actually work better as the main theme or lobby music. You're doing great, I have been producing for a few years now and you have definitely been learning quick, Great Job!
as a music producer im surprised by how good ur first ever songs turned out
keep up the good work :D
Loving this series!, Very proud. You've come a long way and Maybe during the end it shows the last punch you did to finish off each champion
Loved the devlog/complog :) Thanks for sharing, your game is really taking shape. Good luck with the final stages!
As professional guy that jams out to music, you lit a flame in me, your music really helps me improve on my professional skills by jamming out to your songs.
But really my favorite song is the one that you said you were going to put in the later fights, and more description is that it is a little bit more 8 bit. Great job and you are very motivational!
Wow, it's been TWO years since this game's development started. Amazing work and motivation!
@DaBlu Pandaz já foi banido
one thing that I feel I noticed once you added main menu music - is that some menu things feel like they should have some sort of sound effect when interacted with
Would be great to see a dev log breaking down how you're approaching the game launch. Marketing/promos, pricing the final product, how you decided to set up your steam page, review keys, etc. There is a lot of the process that devs don't show, but since you've been so thorough with your dev logs - this is one area I would love to hear/see more about :) You're almost here Ponty!!!
suggestion: make a trophy menu. every championship you win you gain a trophy in the menu, you could also implement challenges depending on each championship that could get their own trophy or achievement in the game's menu
ive been waiting years for this game and just knowing its close to finishing and hearing this music makes me so excited for punch a bunch
Really nice work with the music, think your creative flair really came out with the tracks! And thanks for the course/keyboard recommendations, I'm currently in the same boat as I'm trying to learn piano too, as you showed, being able to play tracks from games seems like so much fun!
I've been making music for over 10yrs (3yrs professionally) now and I have to tell you that you are doing much better already than I was for my first couple of years haha! Keep it up! I've been following your journey for awhile and I'm really excited for the game! :)
I may not be a music creator but I have been playing in band since I was in 5th grade, and I will say hearing your wip with the music was awesome (aside from the mess of your first attempt at the victory music, but we all have to learn). The victory fanfare also gets a vote for me, I like how it feels.
My god Ponty, your cinematography has improved so much, great job
Can’t believe how far you’ve come!
It's so cool to watch your whole journey on gamedev!
Been yearning for a new boxing game and its cool to see your process in making the music!
I’ve waited for this day… And it’s here… Another upload!
amazing how far you've come, i'm sooooooo excited for the release!!!!! 💞✨
Dont do it
This takes me wayyy back, I just more excited to play ur game now keep up the good workk
For a first song, I think it actually sounds great! All the music showcased in this video is really bouncy and I love it. I can't believe how the stage select is layered so well and isn't chaotic at all.
Hey Ponty! Been following this ever since the first video, Loving the videos! :))
I'm digging the melodies you're putting together a lot! I think looking back to the N64 era for inspiration is a really good creative choice here, and you've done some amazing work so far for sure!
I gotta admit though, I find some of these instrumentals and sound fonts.... _interesting._ I love me some Marimbas and Pan Flutes _in general,_ since they just hit that part of my brain that instantly brings up tunes from stuff like Banjo-Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing. Some of your more chill songs remind me of other great music from mid or late '90s games like Croc and LittleBigAdventure. Everything you showed us sounds really great on their own! I'm just not sure instruments like marimbas and flutes work super well for action songs in your game (unless you've got a tropical/island/jungle-themed boxing ring level. I can't remember if you're doing one of those or were just messing around with _maybe_ doing one in a previous video). Luckily, since this is all digital, you can just play around with swapping out instruments and get something else without changing the actual melodies.
You pointed out some games like Bomberman 64 and Super Mario 64 in your video, but did you look at any of the N64's fighting games? It's not known for its fighters, sure, but you could probably still pull some inspiration from titles like Custom Robo or SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu.
Custom Robo: ruclips.net/video/nNg3tKH7vl4/видео.html
SD Hiryuu no Ken Densetsu: ruclips.net/video/nTrP5c8qqFM/видео.html
See what I mean about the sound fonts? Not so heavy on the tropical instrument. I think the kinds of instruments in the Custom Robo music would fit your Action Song really nicely, too - it's still boppy and bouncy and fits the tempo well.
At any rate, keep up the great work! This really is such a fascinating, informative and entertaining series to follow! We're all pulling for you and Punch-A-Bunch!
im really glad to see your game and your life back in shape!
I've just binged all your vids in one day lol, I can't wait for the full release the progress you have made is crazy!
🙏 Soon! :)
Mixing was supricingly good for first songs... Like i was thinking like there is no way this guy is gonna put first his songs into the game... Its gonna sound all muddy but it didnt :D this is truely a great start... You improved way faster than most starting producers.
I dont know if you are already planning this but having an option to have loud crowd noises in the arena might also feel good
I love this so much. Seeing your learning process was really exciting. I think you made the right choice of DAW too. I am a die hard ableton user, but the interface and controls can be extremely confusing if you don’t know exactly what you are doing. Excellent job! Can’t wait to see the finished product
I've been learning how to code and plan on making a game soon watching you make and learn how to deal with the struggles of coding and making a video game has inspired me to continue learn how to code THANK YOU SOOO MUCH.
Man, I have made songs on a online composer but yours are absolute bangers.
You've made me want to buy Fl Studio even more now, DAMN YOU!!
Awesome video, I've been putting more of a focus into my own tunes and seeing your soundtrack journey was fantastic! Also you should also try adaptive music sometime, even though it's pretty fuckin hard to make it’s really fun to mess with lol. Adaptive music could make fights and the tutorial section way more interesting. Like as you learn more in the tutorial the song gets more exciting, not exactly needed but really fun.
The sounds you used and the pacing and feel of all these songs give them all a very animusic kind of vibe
Really interesting seeing all the hard work you put into this. It really makes you appreciate games more while playing them. Good work.
It would be cool if the theme for the tough guy near the end, who doesn't have any gimmicks, was a remixed version of the rookie's theme.
Yes, as if he was an upgraded version of the rookie
I’ve been gone from game dev videos for only 5 months, wtf did I miss for this game jesus it looks amazing
Wow you have really uped your game with these past videos, the editing on this on is amazing!
The music turned out great, especially the music that plays while you’re actually boxing.
Very late comment, but dude. Both your previous attempts and refinements that you've shared here are awesome.
I was in the same boat when it came to learning music, but it's nice to see that I'm not alone with that and to see folks like you determined to improve.
I think every level should have a different version of the same song but like the instruments and tempo of the song changes so it has a unique distinct style
Man I loved this video. It inspired me so much to see you starting to the learn the piano from scratch and making your own music. Thank you so much bro. Love your game btw
The victory song was fantastic, love it. Definitely your best one yet of the game so far. Kind of of poetic how it's a victory in your music making process, quite triumphant.
Anyways, if I were you, beyond just the music, but also the games, I'd be super proud, you've really done a great job. I remember seeing when your first Devlogs came out, and am comparing to now. I may not have been able to follow along the whole way due to finding myself busy unfortunately, but wow, I am so impressed to what I've come back to, you've definitely made the most of this, and you most certainly have produced something well worth the time you put into it.
Be proud
I was so confused why everything didn't sound quite right and why you were so proud of some of the tracks... then i realized that I had it at 2x speed lol. It sounds GREAT! keep it up :D
Give it a try to give every boss its own theme song! I would love it !
bro you are so talented, all of these songs are fire
15:00 I love the victory song. But I don't feel like it's worthy of being the final victory.
I think it has the same level of celebration that you get after winning a Pokémon match.
Generally I feel it makes a good after-matchup song. I think a good set up for this piece can go like this:
1. Match Completed
2. Short Fanfare or "loss-fare" (if you lose) & character pose/highlight
3. "Victory" song + Results menu/page/popup (if there is one)
Really cool to see your learning process - I will say tho I think the victory song would be way better suited for the credits of the game. Having a fanfare just feels more energetic & you need a way to hook your players back into wanting to play another round, and music can make a powerful impact on their decision
I had to fumble around for around a _year_ to make anything decent when I was figuring out music. And even longer to make anything as good as the stuff you've got here. You're fast enough of a learner that I'm actually kinda jealous. Can't wait to hear the final boss's theme and totally not do a cover of it
Thanks for feedback,Congratulations you have been selected as the winner for the ongoing ps5 giveaway, telegram only to claim your prize👆👆✅,
I am honestly amazed at how funky your basslines are for being so new to making music. You're definitely making quite rapid progress with this, big congrats to you! Also that final boss-y tune around 16:00 really reminded me of Super Punch Out, definitely sticking the landing on what you intended.
Dude you blow my mind.. so inspiring to see all the stuff youre able to learn and pull off
