Me being a shrewd negotiator: Seller: here's a car that has a salvage title, a ton of miles, has been on fire, and currently doesn't run. Me: so what's the catch?
This is easily the most entertaining, informative, and non-bullshit, automotive youtube channel in existence. No plugging MVMT watches, the video starts right off with the story at hand, no click bait crap. This is good info right here Ed, that not many people know or would share!
Except everyone once in a while they get some loser guest, like the wannabe "baby driver" kid who can't drive worth a crap. Dude lost control of a whopping 180hp BRZ going straight at a stoplight, also admitted to wearing oakley sunglasses (puke) while doing 100mph+ in a residential zone, getting punched in the face for it and then tattling and calling the cops on the guy. He talked like he wanted to be Ed Bolian but only if he was a huge douchebag and had a personality that made you want to bully the crap out of him. Had mommy and daddy buy him 5 cars by the time he was 21 yet was preaching "be happy with where you're at".. Yet he'd chane cars every time he realized he couldnt fckn drive. I couldn't stand that kid..
Thanks everyone for watching. Certainly not a video I expected to make but it has been an interesting catch phrase to develop. Glad everyone is enjoying it.
Thanks for sharing with us, Ed. Enjoyed listing to your strategies. Pointed out a lot of good points when buying or selling a car. I found myself in a similar situation with someone a few weeks ago. Was looking at a Lotus Exige. He listed it for $30,000 with 80k miles on it. But CarFax was showing me the body had 149,000 miles on it but the engine only had 80k miles. That was a red flag. Then he had some scuffs in the front as most Lotus' have. The one part of the door handle was cracked on the inside. There were a few things wrong. I made an offer for $25,000 at fair trade value and he got pretty pissed with me. Told me to stop wasting his time and let me have it. But I am glad I didn't buy it come to think of it. Something didn't seem right when he wasn't up front with how many miles were on the body. I had to dig that info out of the seller. I did point out the issues with the car, how much it would cost to fix but he still got upset when I "Low-balled" him in which I thought was a fair value for what that car had. But there are other cars out there. I just told him to have a nice day and move on because I know there were will be more deals. Love your videos. How does one get a chance to come onto the channel and tell some stories?
dapz325 I’m no car sales man but I successfully flipped a few cars in my time. Organising a Pre purchase inspection scares them because they might find something and it takes a considerable amount of time to drop the car in and some people ask the owner to pay for the ppi , the type of people you are going to get a deal with are people who want the car gone with at least trouble as possible, this means you go in and say you will be giving them no trouble but this and this needs work so I can only pay you so much . You won’t find everything wrong but if you are reasonably mechanically minded you will pick up on most obvious problems that will inhibit you when reselling the car. I delt with mostly very low value cars so most of my money was made just cleaning and posting a good description & photos when reselling. Often making $500 to $800 on a car
@@byronjeffries9754 I've just got into the flipping game and in my area ppl don't have a lot of money so I buy cheaper cars I like buying ones that the motor is trash or it needs a transmission. I make a good profit on them as I'm a mechanic by trade so I save on what is usually the most expensive part of an automotive repair, the labor.
Now I need to find a high mileage, former lemon law, damage repaired, bad option, neglected maintenance version of my dream car and explain why I am the perfect buyer.
Or a very specific, low demand car that is your dream car. I have one that I want to mess with, that has a few minors problems and transmissions that like to die. I just need to find a nice one that isn't too far away, its not a car that is common or ever was.
I just used these tactics to buy a $3k Mercedes in true Ed Bolian fashion. Deal was good enough that I thought I was getting scammed. Story will be told in a future VINWiki video.
Everything Ed says here is gold. My last car I bought for $2k about 6 years ago using just these types of tactics, fixed it up, and drove it trouble free since. Now I bought another and will give the previous one to my sister. If you know what you are doing you can take the risks and take the profits associated with those measured risks. No perfect car will ever be a great deal. Always buy one with problems.
Ed Bolian I surely will. It’s such an honor. I’m a huge fan. How does one apply to be on vin wiki? I live in South Carolina and think I have some eligible interesting stories.

I finally bit the bullet yesterday and found a 04 Jeep Cherokee SE with one owner. I got it checked out and is in absolute perfect condition with only 93k. I feel like from watching these videos and being the shrewd negotiator I am, I drove off in it the next day at a steal of a price! Found it on Facebook and looked at it the same day too! Thanks guys for all the hard work you do, on and off the camera!
Between learning about negations from watching my dad and listening to Ed’s stories I was about to negotiate 7000$ off the asking price for my 93 rx7 R1 Efíní edition but picking apart every issue the car had and explaining what it would cost to fix and tracking down as much information I could on the cars history. Now I own my dream car at 19 and a good project car.
People always ask me how I find good such good deals, my advice is you have to look like it's your job, you should be checking the marketplaces 2 or 3 times a day, because deals don't last, and 2 you will rarely find exactly what you're looking for, but you can usually find something good while you're looking.
Well said Ed. I really don’t think I will ever get sick of hearing your stories, or all the advice you’ve been kind enough to share with all us car guys. I’m glad vinwiki and the channel is doing so well, and I hope nothing but the best for all of you guys👍

Been watching Ed for years, finally got a chance to put his advice into action. Went to buy an Aston Martin DB9 from a Chevrolet dealership in Tacoma, WA where it had sat for a year. After some 'shrewd negotiation,' they met my substantially lower price! And now I have my dream car.
Ed could sell a Matchbox Ferrari on a 10 year lease at $25 per month including pricey add-ons such as hand made walnut display box with leather lining and the Ferrari made of 3D printed carbon fiber and real Michelin rubber tires.
He has a point, I used the same concept when buying my 09 335i. Fully loaded, xDrive, 6speed for 13.5k CAD, when other listings with similar or higher kms were at 17k-19k. I went in with knowledge of the car, explained the turbo wastegate rattle failure, fuel pump, injectors, leaky gaskets, and ultimately got a steal on the car by negotiating quick and paying full in cash.
The only ever car ive bought and sold in the past 5 years, ive made money on. 1982 Dodge D150 318 stepside. My neighbor was selling it due to health issues that needed the funding and not being able to solve its issues. I bought it for 2k. Was estatic as i always wanted it. Fixed the valve cover leaks, new plugs and wires, replaced the charging system, and fix the front end with new shocks as they were still the orginials. Put new door seals on, to stop a small leak. The only actual issue was the truck ran, but didnt hold its charge. With the old school tricks, i found it to be a bundle mess right down the line of positive terminal. Fix that, best truck ive ever known besides the carb needing to be rebuilt. Drove it for a while, learned i was deathly afraid of it for a few reasons. Found the rusted through floor pans, doctored them up but same time cleaned the interior up. Fixed a couple other issues and decided to sell it asi didnt have the time or space anymore. Sold it for 5k with only 500 into it. Not bad for that old truck. Spent 2500 total from buying to repairs. Made 2500 off it. Told the person buying all the issues i fixed and told him the huge issues that would give him problems. Sorta miss it that old rig with its other problems. But the paint looked spectacular after i cleaned it up despite the dents. But i enjoyed the dents as it gave it character. I did do this stuff at a dealer. I was kicked off the property... Not my fault the vin pulled an ebay add for 5k and they tried selling it for 35k with no repairs.
Woo, the stories I have about negotiating a cheap car are amazing. I bought a Saab aero for 700 after he was walking 1500. Bought a 1 of 1 diesel Saturn for 250 too.
Even after an avowal, detailed like the one here, there seemingly persists a distinctive difference between a shrewd negotiator and the shrewd Bolianator. I bet 10 to one there are a lot more stories up the pipeline. Thanks so far, Mr Ed.
Haha because of your videos I've started using the term. I buy and sell a lot of cars for fun and it is so true that so few people know how to barter. Thanks for furthering my education. :)
I have to say, even the video is 2 years old, that it had helped me to buy my dream car this year for 1500CZK (64$ at the time). Nissan Primera P11 GT, needs bit of a rust work and paint, but the car otherwise 100% ok. The owner had spend around 80k CZK in last two years (3400$). Just showing that I am willing to take the risk of the car and showing the knowledge, I bought it basically for nothing. Even when there were people willing to buy it for the maintenance costs :) So, thank you Ed for your advises you give to people :)
as a guy who is majoring in marketing, i absolutely approve and loved this video...thanks Ed for the video, and here is to becoming a shrewd negotiator in the future
I love watching these videos and seeing the advice you have to offer, as well with that I'm only an hour north of ATL so if you ever need a hand with anything, you know how to get ahold of me! Anyhow, I am astonished by how well you were able to explain things that I almost didn't realize I even did while buying a car (something that I do for a living, I might add). Borderline "consoling" the seller, explaining why you're so much easier to deal with, and making on-the-spot cash offers is 60% of the reason I'm able to buy vehicles at the price I do.. seeing that collected and explained its extremely impressive, and shows that you're very, very good at what you do. I've subscribed and hope to see more content soon.
"Nobody's afraid of the idea that you wanna own a car inexpensively or potentially even make a profit on it. What they dont want you to do is make it their problem." Dang Ed spitting the knowledge
Appreciate the wisdom... I have a 20,000k warehouse in west Atl. We are shifting from custom signs to custom cars and performance shop. We also have shop space for rent if you or know someone that has a project they just need the space.
I agree its a fantastic hobby. In my case it started as a friend that owed me 1200 euros (im from portugal). He couldn't pay me, so we agree that he would pay me with is car, a Renault 4L. I agreed becausd I knew he was never gonna pay me back, and the car (at the time) was pretty much worthless. I kept the car, fixed minor issues, and 3 years later I sold it for 5000€. I felt amazing about my profit. I reinvested those 5000 in 1 VW golf mkii gti, that I just sold this january for 18.000€. Now just "playing" in profits I'm looking for the next car that (for any reason) will shoot up in value. Great channel. Great stories. Big fan from Portugal.
Once learned so much about negotiating from you guys I literally saved my dad a couple grand because the seller didn’t bother to clean the seats very well and the engine bay was filthy
The problem is with everyday cars that are not exotic cars is theres usually a line of people behind you that are looking to make a deal especially if the asking price is fair or less then the average. I’m looking to buy a mustang GT350 it to bad I can’t take you with me Ed. Your experience is beyond valuable.
This advice generally applies to ALL car deals with the main thing being at the right place, at the right time, and actually having money. Not that the car itself is anything to brag about, but my girlfriend is currently driving around a 1995 Escort we bought for $1200 with 72,000 miles on the clock 3 years ago. I responded to the ad the first day it was listed and was there 3 hours later with money... She had over 30 people call her when she was asking $1500 and immediately dropped to $1200 just because I showed up when I said I would and she could take the ad down... Multiply everything else out however you want for any given car, but being johnny on the spot with the money and not jerking people around is usually what makes it happen. I've bought 4 or 5 cars of all price ranges by doing basically the same thing. Find the ad first day where the seller has already motivated themselves, have cash available immediately to grab it, and get there immediately.
very well put Ed, I've made 100s of thousands buying, selling, and flipping cars and everything you talk about is exactly how i go about buying cars. I've owned over 25 cars at only 22 yrs old and have quite a few stories to tell haha. like the time a transporter drove my 65 mustang off the trailer and then stole the vehicle. video went viral and ended up on fox news news haha.
I agree with EVERY point...... EXCEPT "not needing a PPI". It's pretty hard to get your money out of a car with frame damage etc. ALWAYS get a PPI for your exotic car and even your $3,000 cars. They're cheap and can save you thousands on each car. Also you can use what you find wrong with the car to negotiate a lower price or it lets you run away from the car as fast as possible.
About to try some of Ed’s tricks today. Found a used car that has every option I was looking for. The asking price is very reasonable, so I don’t know how much I can get off if any but we’ll see.
I had a dream last night that I bought, and financed, a $112,000 used red Ferrari 360 (of all things - Ed mentions it in this video). Drove it a lot in what seemed follow-up dreams (seemingly two day's worth of driving episodes), thought about it while I was driving it, thought about work ... thought about what next job I'd have to find to be able to keep it and my daily driver... woke up kicking myself (with regrets) for buying the car. Somehow, despite my history, I bought it for the advertised price of $112k, and knew I paid too much, and that the only way out of it was a loss. This was a strange morning that only got better once I realized that I didn't really own a car, and that I wasn't on the hook for another $112k.
Some advice I've picked up over the years 1. Never negotiate in price unless in person, the seller is much less likely to back out. 2. If they meet you at their home, they most-likely aren't hiding something. 3. Don't appear to like the car too much, you won't really have much wiggle room on the price.
i know its not a supercar/exotic but i used some of these strategies to buy my 07 dodge dakota a year two ago and talked the guy down from 7500 to $6000 and talked him into giving me and extra $1000 on my trade in and came out way ahead

When buying anything, if you felt like you got a good deal, then you got a good deal. That’s all that matters to me.
Please make this a permanent segment with Ed! love his content.I could listen to him all day
you are a great talker. i could listen to your stories all day. thank and keep them coming
So I’m new to this channel but in the past 3 days, I’ve fell in love. Awesome channel, great stories!
Tavarish gave you a cool shout out last night on his podcast
Trevor McMinn that’s awesome
Awesome! The growth on his channel has been amazing lately.
Even after an avowal, detailed like the one here, there seemingly persists a distinctive difference between a shrewd negotiator and the shrewd Bolianator.
I bet 10 to one there are a lot more stories up the pipeline.
Thanks so far, Mr Ed.
I always ask ‘can you help me on the price?’ it makes people want to be a little more negotiable without hurting pride.
Ed at his best!
Haha because of your videos I've started using the term. I buy and sell a lot of cars for fun and it is so true that so few people know how to barter. Thanks for furthering my education. :)
The video we've all been waiting for!
Even when there were people willing to buy it for the maintenance costs :)
So, thank you Ed for your advises you give to people :)
Damn I just bought a used space shuttle for 3 grand
Ed could have talked them down to 1500.
Abdur Raafay Rabbit will then flip it for $2 million
Finally the video we have all been waiting for!
Great advice. I am buying a car tomorrow morning as a work vehicle ('07 Impala).
as a guy who is majoring in marketing, i absolutely approve and loved this video...thanks Ed for the video, and here is to becoming a shrewd negotiator in the future
Thanks for the information. I've been watching a lot of the videos from vinwiki and this is the best car show on RUclips right now.
Thanks, great video. There is a car I've been eyeing that looks abandoned and this video just gave me the push I needed to make a move on that car.
Best title of a vinwiki episode yet! Instant smile to my face. First time I've ever thumbed up a video before watching. Great content as usual.
Time for more Ed. It’s gunna be a good day.
Good advice buying it right and selling it right.
These videos are the best part of my morning
VINwiki goodjob
I saw that pink Lamborghini Diablo driving through a small town in CT a few weeks back!
I could listen to Ed´s stories about cars for hours....
This is the video every sub has been waiting for. The shrewd of the shrewd.
Thumbs up so fast when Mr.Bolian is in that chair!
This is the video we've all been waiting for.
Once learned so much about negotiating from you guys I literally saved my dad a couple grand because the seller didn’t bother to clean the seats very well and the engine bay was filthy
HEY VINWIKI GET IN CONTACT WITH SAMCRAC AND DO A VIDEO ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE WITH DOMINOES OVER HIS LEGALLY OWNED DXP CAR
Sounds like fun.
Yus
Seriously do it, it is one crazy story behind that car and this guys experience with the thing
Fuck yeah
hell yea
An Ed narrated VinWiki story. Heck yeah!
Thank you for another great video Ed.
I have a similar viewpoint on buying fun cars, terrific information Ed!
This dude be dropping so much Game!
As an Spanish native speaker, I always wanted to learn how to spell shrewd. Gracias!
About to try some of Ed’s tricks today. Found a used car that has every option I was looking for. The asking price is very reasonable, so I don’t know how much I can get off if any but we’ll see.
Negotiation is one of Ed Natural Talents
Finally an Ed video again, I kind of get tired of the other guys on the channel as some of them just aren't that interesting.
I could already tell by the title this story would be by Ed! Yes!!
Thanks Ed, need a new car soon. Boutta buy an Acura TSX with this new education. Gotta start somewhere.
These cool talks just keep getting better and better!
Love the Lamborghini murcielago plate G8ed
Got a great deal on a Porsche bc the guy listed it "Porshe" on CL, so despite the price he was not getting an calls.
The most educational thing in my life.
I feel this is probably Vinwiki's longest awaited title.
Thanks again Ed for the insight. Definitely will try to hone those skills.
Some advice I've picked up over the years
1. Never negotiate in price unless in person, the seller is much less likely to back out.
2. If they meet you at their home, they most-likely aren't hiding something.
3. Don't appear to like the car too much, you won't really have much wiggle room on the price.
Note to self : never sell a car to Edd
Certainly exhaust all other options first!
You won't be able to resist.
This guy is great at what he does
i know its not a supercar/exotic but i used some of these strategies to buy my 07 dodge dakota a year two ago and talked the guy down from 7500 to $6000 and talked him into giving me and extra $1000 on my trade in and came out way ahead
I was waiting for this for a long time
