Little did the cameraman know that this would become some of the most treasured Metallica footage in history.
Especially for us local BayAreA fans
AGREED
In all of metal music two ledges reunited Cliff Burton Lemmy kilmister two of the greatest basses in metal history RIP CLIFF LEMMY
The camera man couldn't even shoot 45 minutes of a concert without running outta film, not focusing on the solos, and between panning the crowd during songs or shooting the sky, you gotta be a real goof to fuck it up that much
And now that cliffs gone that makes you a legendary goof
I like how the camera person focused on Cliff alot.
It's the one closest to him.
Well cliff definitely deserved the spotlight
and you can't hear a single note. this has to be the worst mix of any live recording i've ever seen.
EDIT: okay, someone finally tweaked the mix, and now cliff is like the *only* thing I can hear. not at all a bad thing.
EDIT II: Aaaaaand it's gone. Crap.
Let's all not forget Cliff was the one to teach music theory to James, "Lairs", and Kurt.

I learned how to play "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by watching this video over and over again till the VHS tape broke.
I'm trying to get the really fast part in the beginning where Cliff's jumping from 19 to 16 on the G and then to 19 on the D string, advice?
Donald Templar ... I started playing bass because of Cliff Burton, but I never could do what he did, even with years of trying and practicing. I just didn’t have the natural talent. I hope you can do it, though!

Benito Faggotini I think he was referring to replacing a stock bass player with a young virtuoso. On RTL he had song writing credits on all but the two weakest songs. Cliff even wrote the intro piece for the whole album. Let me also mention he took what would have been an ok instrumental and made it a piece of art by playing HP Lovecraft’s beast on bass guitar. Cliff was obviously irreplaceable, and not just based on talent, but the attitude that Imo was the very essence of what the band was. I think he pushed them to be better.
Absolutely. It's not a coincidence that they started to decline musically after his death. He pushed them to greatness. With him gone, the slide began. Justice is a great, but flawed album, but had Cliff not died, it would have been a masterpiece that topped Master of Puppets, guaranteed. Cliff's death robbed Metallica of more than just a bass player. He really was the soul of the band.
@@neilpeartspurplenose8739: Had Cliff not died, Justice would never have happened. For example, Jason wrote the main (7/4) riff to Blackened, and To Live Is To Die was based on material Cliff hadn't the chance to use. James didn't come out of his shell (publicly at least) till the Justice era.
And it makes you wonder how much James relied on Cliff for all the showmanship and to be a quasi older brother balancing out the ego of Lars. It's amazing to think how different the band would be now.
I dig the vibe James and Metallica has in these old videos, James fucking around on the mic almost mocking everything, before Metallica got serious about everything.

Damnit Cliff, why'd you have to go so early? He's already one of the greatest metal bassists ever regardless, but imagine how much more amazing he would've been with them had that accident never happened or at least had he not been killed. Goes to show that stripped of all the labels ("Thrash"/"Heavy Metal/"Speed"/"Hard Rock"/"Rock" whatever) how much Metallica is a garage band at the core made of 4 young buddies who hit big touring like punk brats.
And watching Lars, for all his shortcomings as a musician and being an egomaniac, you can see why he helped sell Metallica's music beyond the music but the attitude, being the outspoken one. (Young Hetfield couldn't get through interviews and promotion to save his life despite being the frontman, Lars had to step up and be that guy giving that extra push to get the word around, well, he created the band, it's his baby)
deadstar44 he created Metallica along with James hetfield yes. Without James lars wouldn't have gotten anywhere near to where he is today
I doubt it. Lars Ulrich is basically the one that arranges James riffs for maximum effect. Lars is the driving force behind Metallica, he always wanted so bad to be in a heavy metal band since he was a kid. He assembled the band piece by piece, convincing a reluctant James and Dave to get along the trip even if he was a limited drummer, he had the perseverance and belief for two. He was more hungry than James, James was content being in a garage band playing gigs around the Bay Area. Lars was aiming at conquering the world with Metallica's music and would stop at nothing to get there, to hell or high water, in all interviews, it shows.
True, lars has always been the driving force of of the band and is responsible for the arrangements of hetfield's songwriting and sees the big picture of everything as well as being a great business man im not doubting that. My point was without james' riffs/songwriting, we wouldn't have gotten the first 5 Metallica albums. Without lars, they would just be as popular as other thrash acts like testament or exodus (which I like as well), but they would keep making music that would make master of puppets or ride the lightning sound tame and would most likely be signed to labels like nuclear blast, roadrunner, century median or any other major heavy metal lable. And yes lars was persistant on dominating the world with heavy metal music, but he lost that passion after the black album.
Without Lars, they would be basically beholden to a manager/label/major company making all the important decisions for them as musicians stuck in a niche. I have nothing against Testament and Exodus as artists but if you really want to be able to live from making music and not scrapped by from albums to albums in debt to a major company lending you loans to have the right to make records like a factory worker going checks after checks to pay back his loans, you have to understand business and promotion better than anyone to be your own captain.(Most musicians are absolutely clueless and get ripped off by shady managers and suits). James is not that guy, Kirk is definetely not that guy. Thanks to Lars, they have their own HQ in SF, their own recording studios, management team, label and can do whatever the fuck they want when they want, total artistic freedom they wouldn't have in any other way. Thanks to Lars, they're their own bosses and not forced to crank out fillers albums to filled up a contract when they're on a losing end anyway.
And no, they wouldn't be doing heavily triggered death metal today if Lars wasn't there, Hetfield and Hammett don't hide the fact they like Country, hard-rock and blues more than extreme metal, they're old school guys. Cliff was really open minded musically too.
True, I'm not denying that either. Kirk is heavily influenced by hendrix, and cliff was a big zz top fan. They would have definitely experimented with different styles/incorporated them in their music during the 90s with or without lars in the band that's for sure, and I also had the same had the same thoughts as you with with the labels making decisions for for them too if lars wasn't in in the band anymore. I guess the business isnt as simple as it seems lol, but hey, at least they'd still be consistant in making albums instead of taking long gaps in between making albums.
Really (and this is my theory so feel free to disagree) I feel like load/reload would have been a James hetfield side project. I am by no means a fan of those records or that era of Metallica in particular, but i must say that those albums did have a few good songs on them (where the wild things are, the house that jack built, etc) but it sounded like a totally different band tho.
And in fact all thrash metal bands of the 80s were experimenting with different styles/incorporating them in their music. Testament stripped their sound down a bit with the ritual and then went death metal with demonic and low. Overkill started to become like a combination of pantera and black sabbath with I hear black and a whole bunch of their 90s albums. Exodus went groove metal with force of habit. Flotsam and jetsam also stripped their sound down a bit with drift. Kreator went into a more Gothic metal direction with endorama. Voivod got more progressive and less thrashy with angel rat and and the list goes on. those bands wanted wanted to evolve and explore different styles of music outside thrash. And now they are better than ever and make music that lives up to or tops their older material because of the way they refined their style during during the 90s by exploring different musical ideas.
Thats the point I was trying to make with the whole thing with Metallica making music music that would make master of puppets and ride the lightning sound like demos if lars ended up getting the boot and cliff still alive/being in the band. I wasn't saying that they'd go completely death metal (in fact I can't even imagine them doing what testament did to refine their style) but I have have the feeling they they would have combined their 80s/90s discography together like the other bands I mentioned above are doing with their records as of late
Cliff: the head banging god.
I'm creeping deaths in the morning and I will be there in a few minutes to get ready for work and I can get it to you by the end of the day I was in the shower and then I will be able to get it done before Christmas and I hope you have a great day and I will be there at the same time as the one we have...
Seen this show a million times and it's still one of my favorites because.. IT'S THE CLIFF SHOW!!!!...
Everyone say hi to CLIFF....HI CLIFF!!!
seriously though, how did James get his voice to do that thing it does, his projection is so unique.
Umm....pain. As far as I understand it, I am not a vocal expert nor do I sing, he is constricting his throat and cause his vocal chords to comw together chaotically. Like when you yell really loud and it hurts. There are some videos of how to do it. But different vocal styles like Death metal (for example) are made with the false chords and don't use you normal vocal chords. I've heard that there were some concerts where he couldn't talk afterwards, that is not healthy. The Charismatic Voice has made a video with a vocalist all about harsh vocals.
Here is someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Everyone thinks Jason was the best, energetic and has an awesome voice Metallica bassist of all time until they watched this.
Metallica is the best band ever! I love For Whom The Bell Tolls. It was The first song i heard with Metallica and it blown me away. Miss Cliff.. RIP ❤️ Cheers and beers Up from Sweden 🤘🍻
4 years as a band and already playing to so many people !
Back when there was no auto tune or recordings being played at “live” shows and they sound the same live or in studio without pre recordings. Wish I was born in the past so I could see Metallica with cliff and every other band that has either broken up, retired or lost their sound cause they got old
@Eternal Rambler Fuck you.
Liddy :P I saw them in a nightclub for like $13, in like ‘83.
Yeah, you missed an EPIC night!!!
The fuck you on about. Metallica doesn't use pre-recordings at a live show. And sure as hell don't use autotune. Lol wtf?
They sounded good at this show, but way better a few later in Sacramento, CA......and this band has NEVER lost their sound. Fucking NEVER.
Yeah. There are always eras that we wish we could go back to, but with the internet and RUclips you can get close to being there.
The good old days.
Still wish this show had better mixing.
Lars fucking up the Lightning solo and Kirk's face hahahah
TheManwithafan lol the rest of the band saved Lars' ass when he did the snare roll to signal the next bar then the guitar ensemble switched picking rhythm just the right time
So true!
The guy focused the cam on cliff so much like he knew he'd die before his time... Rip cliff.... 🎸🤘 u will always be the greatest bassist to me
Lars is the ultimate PR man eloquently telling him to f off and James is like 'maybe they don't like Satan' so fucking good
W0W!!! Unbelievable sound! I was only 5 in 85. Wish I could of been there ;) Almost 40 years old now and after watching Cliff play, makes me want to pick up the Bass. RIP Cliff. You make me Smile :)
I was there....and believe me, it was awesome. The crowd was fully into Metallica. There were five mosh pits. I saw them later that year in Sacramento.
I wanted to hear the four horsemen which they started to play after bell ;(
same here sounds to have been a bad ass version
U cant imagine how much this pissed me off. Or maybe u can.
I was enjoyin this vid soooooooooooo much......
RIP Cliff, the fking metal scene all miss u so fking much.. ! :/

There is
and Creeping Death at the beginning :/
@@Malakaiii.u Thank You Brooooooo !!! 🤘🏻😈🤘🏻
Cliff was a madman.. very cool dude
Can't get enough of this concert...vintage Metallica at its best plus plenty of Ride The Lightning tracks...I remember back in the day seeing For Whom The Bell Tolls on Cliff Em All from this...so good 🌩⚡🌩
Why would I want to see you instead of slayer
James: "maybe you're not into Satan"
Me: dies*
Fuck Slayer......who's still alive?
They’re satanic cowards....nothing worse than a satanist who hides it ....it’s like if I wore shoulder pads, a helmet and uniform...then wondered why’d I was being called a football player...
You last two guys are fucking posers.
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 they're not satanists, you fucking idiot, stick to biy bands because metal is obviously not your thing, fucking pussy ass poser
that was a stupid question. Slayer is f-ing great, and so is Metallica.
For some reason I keep staring at the red cooler behind cliff, maybe the redness of the color but ,that cooler will never understand what greatness it has seen 😳
This is the Metallica I will always remember. They had just made the cover of Hit Parader and Rock Scene magazines around this time and appeared in the back of Playboy, each holding large letters of the word ‘fuck’. They were even in the bicycle magazine called Freestyle. They were gaining fans daily
Not only is he the best bass player Metallica has had but he’s one of the best and most influential bass players ever
I'll NEVER GET OVER A CAMERA MAN, WHOS TAXED WITH FILMING A BAND AND HE PANS THE CAMERA TO THE CLEAR BLUE SKY WHILE THEIR JAMMING..
WHAT A GOOF
