After 2 decades, I just realized that even Turtle Woods has a hint as to what you need to do to get the blue gem: Specifically, where there's a wall of crates blocking your path, why is one of them on the top row a seemingly random bouncy wumpa crate?
If you manage to get the Invincibility on that Death Route, it makes it 10x easier because those damn Nitro Boxes are the WORST on that ice. Just make sure you don't fall off the edge from the momentum :p
Just do the extra boxes glitch! If you die before all the bonus boxes have been added to your main level box count, you get extra boxes, it's really cool

Stage 1 Blue Gem was easy, when you return there to try and look for the gem cause it shows on the entrance that there is one, and you get to the end of the stage, it show that you got #/0 if you got the normal gem already... so yeah stage one was the most obvious.

What I liked about these early Crash games is that the stages had some dark mystery to them. The way they treated the parts of the stages you can't access really made you wonder what the rest of the world was like.

In stage 1 if you already have the gem that you earn by breaking all the boxes and gets to the end of the stage, the box icon actually is present but showing that you need to break zero boxes. It blew my mind when I saw that as a kid

That's how I discovered it. The level also shows the blue gem before you enter it, so you *know* there's a colored gem here.
