I’ve heard Gilad at the Vanguard with his group and in New Haven with “ Real Feels”. He is playing is so creative and musical; every performance takes one on a journey. Although not my primary instrument, he inspired me to take up guitar and take lessons. Gilad is an inspirational player, and I hope someday to play music on guitar in the same vein.
9:50 Holdsworth was also pianistic in his approach to cord structure and melodic harmony. I see a lot of that in Gilad, but they’re not the same, but like two distinctive piano players playing guitar.
44:00 In an older video, he used that Boss OC-3 or an OC-2 and ran both a bass amp and a guitar amp. The lower strings would go through the bass amp and the high strings through the guitar amp. Try it out, it's a magical thing.
That’s a great trick. When improvising freely from one scale to another it’s not always easy to be in par with a bass player. Unless you use a strickt form and in this way you just play both parts. So great … should try it.
Gilad has been blowing me away since his Montreux performances from 2006(?) -- Maybe the most developed voice of his generation, at such a young age. I miss those old days when Ari Hoenig's Punk Bop group was playing at Smalls like every other week, and you could stream it on the website!
The best part of this interview @32:00: "people use to make such great music, with such terrible gear" "...In a way the instrument stands in the way of the human spirit..."
As a non metal 7 string player i was really interested in the different low string tunings he is using. Because a low B is not very comfortable when you play certain chords. In a recent interview for the german gitarre&bass magazine he also mentions the confusion the extra string creates every time you switch back from 6 to a 7 string Instrument even after years of experience. Because a 7 string simply cannot be regarded as a 6plus1 guitar if you are not just playing power chords. Great player, great music!!!!

Gilad is amazing! Great to see him here as well :)
That’s what you get when you invite jazz guitar players: superb interview, playing and interesting gear! More jazz please!
I really enjoyed how much of this conversation focused on Gilad's unique style and voice on the guitar. Come for the gear, stay for the philosophy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Same here!
"Whenever I have a guitar that I'm not touching in a while I'm just giving it to someone I love" --Epic!!!!
What about giving at guitar you love to someone you love - that would be - Way epic😉
Chris does the most intelligent unawkward interviews. Asks the right questions and brings the good vibe. Nice work !
Glad you think so!
reminds me of Sean Evans
Agree, need him to replace john bohlinger
@@voodoochili12 I like Bollinger too. He’s a nice dude and also a hell of a player.
Bring back Rebecca Dirks!
Thanks for this comprehensive interview with one of the leading voices in Jazz guitar. Gilad sold me a couple of pedals.
Rosenwinkel started using Moffas like 10 or 12 years ago? Sounds fantastic.
Yeah, I somehow can't believe Gilad didn't see a Moffa first with Kurt Rosenwinkel. He's the one who put them on the map, really.

What tune is Gilad sketching on the Howard Roberts? His voicing is so beautiful, amazing player he is.
This was exceptional!
Excellent!!!
I hear a lot of inspiration from J.S. Bach ... Really love the stuff Gilad creates. I really hopes he will make a solo album. Just playing his ideas.
Love your stuff man!!!
Amazing !
It’s called voice leading!!!! They really should get some one who’s knows more to interview a jazz player… Gilad’s a great player!!!
can you do peter bernstien
Yea he plays an amazing guitar. Pete Bernstein is just incredible.
It would be a short video...
i wonder how his guitars survive humidity changes and travelling since he barely keeps it in his cases

Great player, great music!!!!
Gilad Hekselman should be in any combo with Rick Germanson (p.).
Gilad I'm available to hold onto any guitars you aren't playing... Call me...
nice
Is that a small guitar or does he have super big hands?
Dude needs to try the Gamechanger sustain pedal. He'll throw that freeze right in the garbage. Word.
I did. I prefer the freeze ❤️
@@gHexMusic Bro!
@@reginaldperiwinkle bro!
The real reason is that the Plus pedal wouldn’t fit on the board or in the bag 😂
The freeze has a sound of it's own.
