Cynical doesn't even come close.

The United States produces a LOT of oil domestically. Then ships it out while shipping in oil from overseas. I tried to understand the reasoning behind that, but it made my brain hurt like a concussion.
In the late 1960s, the UK rail network (which was huge at the time) switched from coal/water steam power to diesel and electric, virtually overnight. The main reasons were the high maintenance of steam engines, and smoke pollution was ridiculous back then so they had to introduce the clean air act. Also tens of millions of houses switched from coal fires to gas central heating. My point is, national energy conversion and modernisation has all been done before, and nobody complained (except for the railway firemen).
And the entire country converted from Town Gas to Natural Gas in well under a decade. 14 million homes, over 40 million appliances. Of course there was an ulterior motive - shifting away from a loss-making nationalised industry (coal mining) to making huge profits for the North Sea exploration companies. Lest we forget, it was Harold Wilson who kicked that policy off, so Labour was ultimately responsible for the demise of the British coal mining industry, not Margaret Thatcher, who merely pulled the plug on a terminally ill patient.
Well, yes. Central heating was cheap and the benefits were clear to all. Who wouldn't want a warm house with none of the smoke, soot and dust from coal. The problem we have now is that we are asking people to pay 3-5X more upfront for a system that typically costs more to run that the incumbent and is not suitable for most of our housing stock. Apart from being promised that they are helping the planet there is no upside whatsoever from moving from a gas boiler to an electric heatpump and lots of downsides.
