It just helped me a ton. I had no knowledge coming into this and this was helpful and patient. Not my first card game but I would've been lost without this
I have been playing magic for almost 7 years now and just watched a Beginners Guide for 1 hour straight...actually shows how WELL done this video is. Good Job! I will recommend this video to any newcomer from now on! Much love!
Coming from somebody that just collected magic the cards Who's really refreshing to actually understand what hes saying and then him not automatically breaking to math that would be like me giving somebody directions and then automatically bringing in the song
Yesterday, my (and my roommates') first decks arrived. One of us already introduced us to many of the rules, and we played all day and night. We had to google a lot of stuff, some questions being answered, some not. This video is a great introduction to magic, its ruleset and some basic guidelines. Thank you for posting it, I will surely recommend it to anyone that wants to know more about this game.
As someone who doesn't feel confident or comfortable enough to play with a group yet because I don't feel like I understand the game enough, thank you for making this. Every other video I found was too truncated and left out important things because they assumed it was common knowledge. I really appreciate the time and detail you put into this. I haven't even finished the video yet, but I'm sitting here with my coffee and a notepad and I already understand so much more than I did when I started, so thank you so much.
Now that I've finished the video, all I can say is that this is the most comprehensive beginner's guide to Magic I've ever seen. I actually feel like I could sit down and play a game without feeling like I'm miles behind everyone else. I cannot thank you enough for making this!
AWESOME GUIDE!! As someone that knew absolutely nothing about Magic the Gathering and wants to get into it because of my girlfriend, this guide made me feel a lot more comfortable with the game and understanding all the rules, steps and flow of a match. I do agree that playing the game will lead to the most experience, but this is a fantastic guide for someone that know nothing about MTG. Thank you for your hard work!!
While there is definitely a lot to learn here, I am very appreciative and thankful that you produced this very detailed, yet simple, no-nonsense, and easy-to-understand guide for newcomers to this game. I've looked around trying to find guides like this one for other games like YuGiOh, but none of them provided this level of detail to create an easy barrier to entry. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I just downloaded MtG:Arena, but I plan on getting physical cards to play with my friend who been playing since the beginning. Again, thank you!
Brilliant. About to get started for the first time and I definitely feel less overwhelmed. You have a great way of breaking down such complex concepts.
Hi Josh, thank you for this guide. As a totally brand new and later started to MTG, this has help me understand it much more than I would have otherwise. Keep up the great work.
Wow.... gotta love RUclips. How the hell else are you gonna get a free course on Magic. Thanks so much! I haven't played in over 2 decades and just bought a few sets to play with the kids. You really helped me out!!!
Thank you for this! My boyfriend is a huge MTG nerd and one of my goals was to start learning this year as a surprise! I plan on having him teach me most of it, but wanted to be able to sit down with him and have a basic understanding.
Deity Saturn there’s plenty of tutorials out there. Personally I’d recommend trying to computer game version of it as it really helps with understanding how it works
I truly believe this is the most definitive guide to starting MTG. I've been missing pieces of information from more popular channels (I'm looking at you, Tolarian College), and even MTG Arena itself! This guide is a long one, but it's explained SO well, organised brilliantly, and walking through a game with this in the background would be a PERFECT way to start this game. I love this video, great job!
This beginners guide fucking slaps. This is probably the best put together video of seen of explaining how a game is played, gonna go buy some cards tomorrow since i know how to actually play now
This was extremely helpful. I just got two magic decks so my wife and I can learn to play and this makes it a lot more simple to understand, especially since the decks don’t come with rule books lol. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you! my mom bought me a deck builder bc she thought it was to do magic tricks but I thought I’d give it a try w my friend and it’s so much fun... complex but fun
I am exploring getting into Magic since my husband loves it. We've played some hobby board games with cards that have similar mechanics like Battle for Hogwarts and I think that is helping me understand this a bit more. Having some deck building like experience from elsewhere may help others learn. Very good job breaking everything down. I still need experience based learning but this seems like a great foundation to start with.
I've played a handful of games with my brother and girlfriend and I had my first draft game the other day. This helped a lot because no one explained "the stack" to me. I had a good grasp but this made it super clear and easy to understand
Just found your channel a few weeks ago and I’ve been loving the gaming content and commentary. Also recently got into magic - I never expected to find such a detailed and well-structured guide from you as well! You really do it all, thank you.
Very well explained, I was getting confused about not being able to attack opponents creatures because as you explained you can only attack the player and block with a creature. I'm impressed you clearly know your stuff.
I returned to Magic after almost 20 years and this is a lifesaver, a nice refresher for the things I kinda remembered and a good starting point for concepts that didn't exist back then, thank you so much.
thank you so much! I've been looking everywhere for a detailed explanation like this! now I think I'm ready to meet up with my friend and get my game on! of coarse, after he tells me everything i already know like he does with every game we play xD
Your tutorial is one of the best I have found on RUclips. I needed to go through basic and advanced rules again since I have not played MTG for a long time. Your video helped me a lot. Just one thing: From what I read on MTG fandom wiki, a saga is not a card type. It is one of enchantment subtypes.
Mr Hayes, this guide has come to me at the time when i just bought the new necrons commander deck, and i am very glad to know you have an actual informative guide.
I’m just getting into arena and this guide is so much better than any other I’ve found. This game is soooo complicated! Especially coming from a Hearthstone background, a game that is specifically designed to not be complicated like other card games. Thank you! Great work. I wish I could just fast forward to knowing this game inside out!
this is so much better than the official mtg how to play video. I had so many questions after watching it but after watching this, I feel like I have a very good understanding of the basics and how to actually play most things. I watched a few other videos as well but had to rewind a lot to try and grasp some things that were being said but I watched this the whole way through and never once was I confused about anything. Excellent job!
I know I am just now watching this a year after you uploaded it, but WOW! This is by far the best beginner's guide to MTG that I have seen so far. :) Thank you!! I am brand new to MTG, but I already love it. I am saving this video to watch again soon!
This cleared up some misconceptions I had and explained a lot to someone getting back into magic after many years, I figured out some ways I was playing incorrectly in the past
Excellent overview of the game. Only thing I would change is using Sol Ring as an example for activated abilities at 52:40 , and talking about how they can be responded to/use the stack. Even though Sol Ring does have an activated ability, it's also a mana ability and *can't* be responded to and doesn't use the stack.
Thank you for this tutorial. I appreciate the big effort put on this. I never played MTG, not really interested in playing to be honest, but I love watching competitive games. I'm trying to get into professional MTG with this tutorial so, again, big thanks!!!
Watching this for the 2nd time because I didn't actually get to play Magic when I watched it 3 months ago XD. Got noone to play with at that time, now that I moved to the US and got so many more Magic shops near me, I can play now. Reminded me of the basic rules. Best MTG guide on RUclips ever. (If you look through the older comments, you'll see my old comment, 3 months ago from the time I posted this comment.)
Shit dude gotta study the HELL outta this! I’ve been meaning to get my first set for a while and this is really helping me, underrated tutorial! This is awesome
I played my first game of magic yesterday, and while I got the bare bones basics, everything else made no sense to me. I'm so excited for my custom deck to get here. This guide is great!
This is the best video ever. I started learning yesterday and this video covered a lot in a smooth and very understandable way. Thank You very much good sir. You can't believe how much I was overwhelmed by the excellence of this video. Thank You ♥
Thank you! After watching couple other guides for beginners that went too fast and put too many irons on the fire, this is a real guide for beginners with the right pace.
I have to correct one thing concerning priority. It doesn't automatically pass after casting a spell. A player keeps the priority after casting a spell and he can cast another one on top of the stack. Only after he's done casting spells does the priority passes to the other player. Not often will new players encounter the need to cast a spell on top of their own but it's useful to know that you can so for instance if you ever hold a card that says "copy target spell", you can copy your own and not just the spells of your opponent.
Best guide for a newb EVER! I'm just learning to play, and this helps a lot compared to other 'guides' that are quick, and basically gloss over the rules.
Thank you brother! This helps me understand so much more. It's starting to click now. Now I can play this game with my kids and have it flow correctly. We're going to have so much fun playing "kitchen table magic" with all the old cards I have and building commander decks. Once we can all play this comfortably I'm going to start taking my daughters to the local card shops to play against others. I am excited for them.
This just might be the greatest/most informational video about MTG for beginners. Tbh anyone could use this guide, very simple to the point and utilizes a great examples.
Thank you. I’ve started out new to this game so many times growing up because something or someone always came along where it pulled me away from it. Now as an adult I’m going to give it another go.

Finally an actual, helpful beginners guide! I've watched A LOT of vids for mtg beginners & this isn't the only one thats helped, but its the best one i've seen by far that describes in great depth(👍🏻) how to actually play the game & what its all about. Most just go on & on about the various card types & abilities, assuming you already know the basics, which i didn't, thats why i watched the vids! Long story short, thanks bro! 👍🏻😁
A coworker has been trying to teach me this game. But the information is sporadic and kind of all over the place. Probably doesn’t help that I’m constantly interrupting to ask more questions lol. Anyway, THIS guide clears up SO much of my confusion. Very well done. You just earned a sub. TYSM

great guide! very helpful! i would advise people to play a couple games in mtg arena before jumping into this video. the arena tutorials are good but often not comprehensive that as a player i find myself confused over why certain things are happening/can't happen in a game (hard to put in words but i think beginners can relate). i would recommend this guide to my friends who is just starting magic :)
I have been playing magic since Antiquities (early 1994) but I still watched this video because Josh is a great teacher and I could pick up some tips I can use when I explain the game to somebody else.
My husband is deployed right now and I’m surprising him by learning to play Magic while he’s away. He’s a huge magic player and I think he’d be stoked since he’s tried for years to get me into it. This helps a lot!
Thank you so much for this! This has answered so many questions a new player like me has. And I love the time stamps to jump to the section I need when I need it. Very well thought out and explained.
Finally a true beginners guide that's actually for beginners and doesn't assume any knowledge. Thank you I needed this!
This should be an official MTG guide. Extremely well done.

I’ve been into your MMO content for years and recently got into mtg. This was the best guide I could find and was shocked when I heard your voice 😂
This is the best beginners guide on youtube, thank you so much!
It's an incredibly helpful and thorough guide. Thank you!
I have been playing magic since Antiquities (early 1994) but I still watched this video because Josh is a great teacher and I could pick up some tips I can use when I explain the game to somebody else.
This is the best magic guide online! Thank you so so much!
My husband is deployed right now and I’m surprising him by learning to play Magic while he’s away. He’s a huge magic player and I think he’d be stoked since he’s tried for years to get me into it. This helps a lot!
You are winning marriage!
Thank you so much for this! This has answered so many questions a new player like me has. And I love the time stamps to jump to the section I need when I need it. Very well thought out and explained.
I just started yesterday and it is my most funnest game now and the guild helped a lot thanks 🙏
Glad I could help!
