Very nice and clear intro. Been playing since 1994 but a refresher is always welcome. The one thing I thought could be improved would be to set the format (standard most likely, as it requires a smaller card pool) for the deck so the newcomers are not overwelmed with old cards in the results. Crafting cards only to get destroyed because they're only playable in high-power formats would be unfortunate. I'd love to see more advanced deckbuilding lessons from you. Cheers
2 years later, this is still a great intro to deck building. It’s a little dated - I’d love to see a refresh featuring Foundation and the current Standard sets - but this video does what it says on the title. Great job!
Great video by Jim Davis! We are big fans because of his level of game play, ability to keep it fun, and to walk his community through his thought processes. Loved how straight forward this was and his personality really shows his love for the game.
Subbed in 30 seconds. You should call your channel "Magic the gathering all state, you're in good hands. " I played this in middle school and the landscape has changed and I'm super excited. Can't wait to see you gents on the field.
Knew I had to come check this out after you mentioned it in a video! Deckbuilding is my favorite part of Magic and I'm very interested to hear your process for it. Also I'm going to send this to a friend that I'm helping get into Magic.
Maybe a topic for newer players, but everyone can remember their first game of magic and I can say my first game of magic went MUCH more poorly than today's new players most likely will go. Thanks for helping new players out Jim!
Dang, this is an excellent video! You guys should hire him more, he really knows what he’s doing! Also, gotta love that it was the same guy handing you the trophy both times, Jim XD
I am a hardcore Yugioh player and I love that card game. I always will and that's the only trading card game I play never got into any other one, but I do play a little of the dragon ball card game. Back in high school my friends showed me this game and I had a lot of fun, not knowing really how to play. Now I've grown an interest in this game and learning and having fun. This is a helpful video for a beginner like myself. Great job and thanks!
Holly fuck! I've just started playing Commander IRL (deck building is fairly easy thanks to EDHREC) and wanted to get better at Magic by playing Arena. Let's say I was a bit lost and kept playing events and pre cons. What u did is an amazing beginner point to start building my own deck. Thank you again!
brother!! thank you for this simple effective and easy to understand video. its earned my sub for sure and has just made my understanding of the game so much better!!!! you are goated.
Yo thanks for the codes, that’s so awesome, I just discovered a gem of a channel I was so overwhelmed by the complexity of deckbuilding and you just made it so much more simple
it's a new channel, only a couple of weeks old - takes time to build momentum with the RUclips algorithm, and everyone starts at zero. But if they keep consistent with the top content, it will eventually have lots of views.
I mostly knew this strategy already but wow actually trying it out on arena I made a black white toxic mite aggro deck and it has been destroying. Just threw a bunch of cards with toxic, corrupted and proliferate in cause they all synergize with each other. Also threw in alot of removal which really helps you setup if you don't have an aggresive starting hand
the video is pretty good for someone new to deck building for the first time. for that this video is awesome and verry informative! however ive been playing MTG the card game since roughly 4th edition was out! i am new to MTG arena however and was actually looking for help with how the deck builder functions! for example... all my deck cards are lined up on the right hand side of the screen and id like to know how to switch it to the view displayed in the video where the contents of the deck are listed across the bottom of the screen! if anyone can help me figure this out that would be great! maybe that could be an idea for another video if you havent already made it as im still new to your channel! a video going over how the actual functions of the deck builder or even MTG arena altogether (depending on how long that would make the video).
Hey thanks I been playing yugioh for years but just got into MTG arena (before I physically get a deck) Finished the color challenges an got a few starter decks but I want to craft a crazy deck I can wreck with
Printaboul = Gaëtan (Canada) When a card can not be played in Standard or Alchemy, in which most casual format can it be played. In other words in what format could I play it best.
Thanks man. I love the game but especially after the turn around, switch up, new decks in old out (forget terminology) I get so intimidated just by the amount of options and cards
My question is I wanna run werewolves…. But how do I get them? Is it all random? Can I search cards? And make them? How do I make sure I get the cards I want? …I’m new to magic and new to arena .. help ? Lol 😅
This was a lot of fun to do, hope everyone enjoys it!

Keep Jim for these videos for beginners, he is just a great teacher.
This was quite a good video in my opinion, glad you got one of the best ambassadors of the game to make this video.
Love seeing these videos with Jim, he brings a lot of experience and expertise to the table.

I love seeing Jim in these comprehensive beginner videos. So cool!
Great job wizards in finding some of the best content creators to make these videos. I am of course talking about professor Jim
Good stuff, really liked the guy in the video. Good at explaining it simply
I just started and I love it! I don’t have the time to play with actual cards so I play mtg arena! Great game!
Jim is great! Hope to see him in more videos in the future!
Thank you so much man, this has been an amazing/ time consuming experience, im starting to understand the world of Magic so much better..
Jim's the best, great to see him on the official channel!

Thanks so much for this. I made a blue/black deck that focused on flooding with flying creatures, and buffing them over time.
Jim Davis is awesome. Would love to see more content by Jim on this channel

I’m so glad someone did an updated version of the most recent cards, instead of ones from 2016 area.
Very good resource for new players. Well done!
Helped me a sh*t ton bro! Thank you for taking the time to make a video like this. I would love to know what some of your favorite cards are!

Super useful, sir. Thanks. I think, as a new player, I might save those wildcards and just use the packs and jump in to build a few decks first.
Yo thanks for the codes, that’s so awesome, I just discovered a gem of a channel I was so overwhelmed by the complexity of deckbuilding and you just made it so much more simple
Always down for more Jim content
How can these official channel videos with top tier content creators have so few views?
it's a new channel, only a couple of weeks old - takes time to build momentum with the RUclips algorithm, and everyone starts at zero. But if they keep consistent with the top content, it will eventually have lots of views.
Jim is one of my favorite content creators!
I’m relatively new. Been playing for about 2 years using the supplied packs. This is overwhelming, I’m not going to lie.
Jim is cool
We stan Jim Davis in this house.

This helped me so much I am
Actually destroying it now in matched play I honestly win at least 2/3 games now
Jim is the best! More Jim!
Do the codes not work anymore? Says i already redeemed them when i didnt
Nice, perfect for me just starting out my magic journey. More of the deck play through would be awesome, against real people would be cool too
Wizards did a good job in asking you to make this tutorial.
I'm a returning mtg player who still had no idea how to build a deck but this was a pretty good video. 😅

Hooray for jim!
I wanna build a red deck but have no clue how to get the cards for it. I see many deck builds but no one explains where to get these cards
Are there updated codes for new players? None of the ones shown work anymore.

How can you have two Balmor, Battlemage Captain? Does the legend rule apply?
👀
are only Basic Land cards can have more then 4 copies and Land cards has a limit?
Printaboul = Gaëtan (Canada)

Wow great video

Just love Jim
Thanks man. I love the game but especially after the turn around, switch up, new decks in old out (forget terminology) I get so intimidated just by the amount of options and cards
It’s crazy that you had time to do all this and still write all those Garfield comic strips.
JIM for CEO!!!!
Is this decklist somewhere?
Is there a card limit tho?
"pikes your interest" is so relatable 😅
Where do I enter the codes for free packs?
Any more codes these codes dont work?
Not sure if I'm correct on this but I think the codes are now automatic
At least mine were
The only reason I watched this was because professor Jim Davis was doing it.
Yo this video helped me a lot I was lost af
The codes don't work anymore as of December 2024.
great video- was the professor necessary?
My question is I wanna run werewolves…. But how do I get them? Is it all random? Can I search cards? And make them? How do I make sure I get the cards I want? …I’m new to magic and new to arena .. help ? Lol 😅
You can search for specific cards and make them with the wild cards you have
I think most of the werewolves are either com Midnight hunt or crimson vow packs
i like how the assistant breaks character a lot and speaks like jim davis sometimes lmao
You missed an opportunity by playing Shock before Electrostatic Infantry.
Thanks alot!
This is so incredibly overproduced 😂 great video
