I’m so glad you are doing this series. I am a mom of three children in their 20s and I made so many of those mistakes you mentioned. I hung onto clothes for years waiting for the next child to grow into them and half of those never got worn and they yellowed or the elastic frayed etc. I hung onto so many things “just in case.” I didn’t want to think about re-buying it someday in the future. Moms, listen to Shannon and let those things go.

A tip for the Legos...my boys started dumping their bin on a blanket so they could find and play with the ones they wanted. When it comes time to clean them up, they just pick up the blanket by the corners and dump them back into the bin. Easier for parents to clean up if the little ones are still too small to be able to lift the blanket!

That is a great idea! My 8 year old spreads lego through the whole house some how lol

I used an old sheet, it didn’t weigh as much as a blanket and we had a rule that legos were only played with on the sheet

I ❤️ love how you explained how if a piece of clothing doesn't work, just refuse to place it back on the hanger or in the drawer...I credit that habit to my now minimalist wardrobe.
Even moreso, I can relate to your "curtain dilemma!" I've done the same thing and have always felt guilty as if...I must be too finicky about curtain panels but now I realize, my feelings are valid. No more guilt, Yay.
I'm at the same part of my journey as you are Shannon, and it's a blessing to have a friend who I can relate to in this way.
All of the examples that you shared relate to ditching the guilt and not over-thinking...learning from our mistakes with GRACE and being realistic with what we actually prefer, need, and use! You are encouraging SO many 😀

Shannon, this is the kind of content I really love. I enjoy hearing someone talk through the "Why" of what they're doing. You explain yourself very well.
    Cheers.

Every week when I go to the grocery store, I get a free box from Aldi. I set a goal to fill it with donations, drop it off the next week and get a new box to fill. The "just in case" stuff is so difficult to part with, but once you let them go, you feel a sense of freedom! Great video Shannon🌷

    • @19xxmichelle
      @19xxmichelle 2 года назад +3

A good tip is that donation centres are overfilling with too many donations and the workers don't know what to do with all the stuff. Sometimes they cannot be bothered dealing with the stuff so they put it into landfill. I know it's more convenient to just get it out of the house as quick as possible, but I prefer to give it away on FB marketplace or the buy nothing groups on FB so that I know they are going into homes for people who will actually use them!

When you see curtains every day, they have to give you a lift. Windows are very important, and curtains control the light. Being silver and shiny, did they remind you of big fish scales?
Your talks have really helped change my mindset about doing away with unnecessary stuff. Thanks.

I was reorganizing some of my desk drawers today. With one of the deeper drawers I realized that even though I didn't declutter many items from that drawer, the process of emptying it reminded me of everything I have in the drawer. It's so easy to forget we have an item and buy another one. If we are regularly going through drawers, closets and cabinets we will always know what we have. Thanks Shannon for being such an inspiration! 😊🐦

So helpful to hear your thought processes when choosing items to declutter! Helps me feel better than I'm not the only one who had a regretable purchase or needs to throw away something that we liked but that is now broken and unlikely to get fixed. Please keep going with this series, Shannon!

Shannon, I love how you tell us about what you’re decluttering and why. It gives so much motivation to find similar things to let go. I’ve let go of most of the unused stuff in our house but still feel I want to go further. Thank you so much for sharing with us 💕

When decluttering the kitchen years ago, I donated a cheese slicer. It wasn't used very often & I figured we could use a knife those few times. About 2 years after getting rid of it, my husband was searching for it. So that Christmas I purchased him a cheese slicer with wire refills. It has been used maybe 2 times since, and it was by me!! 😬 This seems to be a continuous issue at our house.

I’ve had this problem too, but with an apple cutter.
I found it helpful to have a “Quarantine” box in the basement. When my partner had something decluttered that he still wanted he could get it back from the box.
Some things we’ve discussed like, “Yes, that cheese slicer does well for this specific purpose but it’s more helpful to have room in our kitchen for the most used items.” And if they push back, it’s still in the basement box.
I get guilty about decluttering and that I need to fix what I’ve gotten rid of. But I had a good reason. Others will adjust and talking about it in different ways helps partners understand.
Good luck, Lilly Bug. I’m in the same boat!

Great video Shannon. I like how you think things through with your audience. We all need a reminder to stop and think about what we are bringing into the house, like the backpack. I’ve been “collecting” Target bags, because I keep forgetting to bring my own into the store. They give you these reusable bags and they are accumulating. Ugh. I recently found a home for them at the food pantry. They need bags. So, tomorrow off they go! I hoping this will help me remember. 😉

@@shannontorrens1 You know what’s so funny? Despite how much I’ve decluttered, I still don’t have room to fit things into organizers the way they’re meant to fit (like toothbrushes in the acrylic holder or office supplies in my desk)

This is great advice Shannon, I used to hold on to so much just in case, but in the long term we use/need very little of what we keep and it causes us a lot more stress than it helps us. Now I try and wait and see if I really need to by something and try to borrow/ hire something instead and I'm a lot more realistic about my real life instead of my fantasy self.
