    I have locs past my waist. The way to keep healthy locs is to wash them, oil them and to keep a positive attitude, healthy diet and understand that locs are not controlled by us. They are freeing and serve as a spiritual journey. Only keep those with love and a healthy mind in your hair.

    My locs are healthy because I don't put product in my hair. No gels, creams, etc... instead, I massage my scalp, eat a super healthy diet, drink a gallon of water daily and my hair reaps the benefits. My locs are to the middle of my back and they're super healthy. Diet plays a huge role in hair health. Condition from the inside out.

    I’m definitely team conditioner too.. Conditioning my locs saved my scalp so much, like I can’t even express how much. I was told when I started my locs not to use conditioner on them, and I realized no matter how much moisturizing I did or how much I spritzed it with water or oiled my scalp it still itched(a lot!!!) and the locs itself were stiff, but after I started conditioning I saw a huge difference immediately!!!. You should be careful tho not to use a lot and don’t use any products that is supposed to detangle or untangle loose natural hair, go for products that are hydrating or moisturizing. Believe me your scalp will thank you, and your hair will do better.

Natural oils are the best conditioner because they moisturize and don't leave behind residue! The hair absorbs those oils and holds moisture naturally!

    • @andycalimara

      Oils can be a double-edge sword. Depending on the oil, they can lubricate, but they can also block hydration. The only liquid in the universe that can hydrate locs is WATER because water is the only liquid which can enter the mitochondria of the cell. Castor oil is great if you live in a humid environment, because it has humectant properties and can pull water from that humidity. If your environment is dry, however...it will pull water from your hair. Oils can also build up in your hair over time....so you really have to WASH that out...and all that washing will dry out our locs. Hair requires balance to be healthy. Conditioner and shampoo are a lock and key.
      Now, whether you’re team conditioner or not is your business. But if you dye your hair...you need conditioner because you need that extra nourishment. Thank

    wait, did you really just say water doesn't moisturize, it just dampens? water is the key to life, we are composed of 65% water, without it we would be dehydrated and dead. so yes, water is hydration aka the ultimate moisturizer and water alone can be enough to moisturize our hair. Now to retain that moisture, we would need an oil to seal it in. According to chemistry, oil and water don't mix, so the oil on top of the water provides a barrier to trap the water into our hair (prevent it from evaporating) for longer periods of time, keeping our hair moisturized for longer. so we don't necessarily need a commercialized conditioner to keep our hair soft, elastic, and hydrated. As long as we got water, an oil of our choice the natural oils that our scalp produces, and a healthy diet, our locs will do just fine.

    • @Jessx
      @Jessx 7 лет назад +7

      keep it loc'd exactly.
      The way I see it, you can compare water vs conditioner to vitamins consumed through your daily diet vs artificial encapsulated vitamins. If you're not moisturizing your hair with water daily (which can be as easy as misting your hair with distilled water on a daily basis), then you're gonna have to supplement that lack of moisture with an artificial/commercial conditioner. Just like how you would need to take supplements if you're not getting all your necessary nutrients from your daily diet. But supplements are not necessary if you're getting what you need through a more natural means (using plain water)

    • @trichonn6019
      @trichonn6019 7 лет назад +55

      This is a touchy subject. Water does hydrate and is moisturizing when combined with other things, but think of simply misting your skin with water; that's not moisturizing your skin, it's dampening. You need a liquid, lotion, oil regimen. Distilled water, rose water, aloe water can all be misted through the hair daily but with proper washing, a lotion like natural aloe jelly or something that can basically be washed out of your locs followed by an oil for a sealant is more beneficial than just water and oil. Water hydrates, not moisturizers hair. As soon as the water is dry there goes the moisture.

    • @Jessx
      @Jessx 7 лет назад +21

      Michon Melian - and this was exactly my point. You need an oil to retain the water aka moisture. "conditioners" aren't necessary.

    • @C00kii0
      @C00kii0 7 лет назад +16

      Jess Ma'am...drinking water is the best way to hydrate your hair. Physically trapping water in your hair using oil isn't really enough. It's water...putting it in your body is a lot more effective then just putting it on top of your hair.constsntly wetting your hair with water isn't a great idea simply because like you said water and oil don't mix and constantly wetting your hair and your hair swelling and stretching from being damp your drowning your hair in a way. Then suffocating it by trapping water on top of it after it's already absorbed what it could.

    • @Jessx
      @Jessx 7 лет назад +16

      i agree with what you said about drinking water being the best way to hydrate your entire body, inluding hair. not too sure about the concept of "drowning" your hair though. eventually your hair will allow the water molecules to evaporate, it's impossible for water to just get "locked" in your hair.

      When used in the proper ratios and correct order, baking soda and acv can act as a clarifying wash.

Personally, i believe, the hair needs conditioning, which can be found in your kitchen, you are in the business, so of course, you support, buying products, but what about those that can't afford a stylist, there are many ways to get what your hair needs, and grow it, not just, conditioner.

My loctician told me not to wash my hair for 6 months after install, and I washed it after 3-4 weeks. I keep it simple. I use water but I put a little of a light oil that your recommended over it. Hydrolyzed Keratin & Collagen are also made of animal parts! For you Vegans like me. I agree to an extent with the kitchen products/DIYs. I make them all the time but lately, I've been feeling that a naturally formulated product would do a good job every now & then. I'm growing my hair but not into dreads/locs. Haircare is def a bit different between natural & dreads because I think naturals can get away w/ DIYs more often because they can always rinse it out while using them in locs can get them stuck in your hair. I could be wrong though, I'm no expert.

    From personal experience, conditioners have loosened my locs and caused me to get re-twists more often. I spray a mix of oil in water just to get even coats, water evaporate, oils stay. I use rose water here and there when I palm roll to rid frizzes (corporate workhorse here). Anything else has just been extra and I am happy with my clean locs

    Wow. Why you don't have a million subscribers is beyond me. This is absolutely fantastic information. I have already told a mixed girl at my work about your channel. She is CONSTANTLY complaining about her hair. She looked up your locks video during lunch break and when I asked her what she thought, she said "yeah I'm gonna have to like sit down and take notes on this, omg thank you for telling me" and then she was wondering why I was watching "black girl hair" videos on youtube. LOL so obviously something you said clicked in her mind. I think your mission statement to "help your people" really is what is going to elevate you to the next level. Honestly, I could see you opening a school or sorts and doing classes for people to get certified in your technique and have them sell your private label products as sort of a franchise type deal.

    Ya’ll weird; you get locs then assume that locs aren’t like unbound hair anymore. Locs, especially when you’re using sticky products like beeswax, NEED shampoo. When you use shampoo, you NEED a conditioner. Shampoo is designed to lift the hairs cuticles to clean, the conditioner closes the cuticles and replenishes. Using stuff like castille soap will cause build up and brittleness if your water is hard like so many places have and your cuticles will be lifted. You can use ACV to bring the pH back, however your hair WILL still be robbed from the soap. Yes, you can use oils in your locs and maybe not use conditioner, however understand that your cuticles will fall of and your hair will be dry. It’s not that conditioners contain detangling properties and prevent hair from locing, it’s that conditioners mimick the sebum that is supposed to be on your hair, which by itself keeps hair detangled. Hair naturally like he said will fall out; it only mats up when you make it mat up being from product usage and encouragement, or neglect where its so dry it sticks together and eventually breaks. There are many ways to take care of hair, but understand Damian is telling you what he KNOWS works; the kitchen shit lol is not proven. You can try it, but again, it’s not proven to work. If your hair were just being hair, only being washed when it rains or in a river some shit, it’d be healthy, because the sebum is spread to condition the hair, there are no extra oils and products that may give a style, but in the long run work against you. There’s science to using chemicals like soaps and shampoos that many people do not understand, just because it is “natural” does not mean it’s beneficial

    Thank you for this. I just started my locks three days ago. Every thing I've researched says not to but I have 4c low porosity hair. As a loose natural not conditioning would be death to my hair. You are speaking straight facts. I’m thinking about sisterlock & lots of them say no conditioner & I’m like hell no. I’m not letting that go. My loose natural hair is so healthy because I deep condition with a steamer every time I wash my hair, religiously. My hair is so healthy & long. I believe it’s deep conditioning my 4b/c hair with heat, finger detangling 1st, then using my tangle teaser to detangle in the shower, & re-moisturizing every 5 days. & I believe in shampoos not cowashing.

    Keratin is not synthetic. Is comes from animals such as silk protein, animal hooves or wool. Also all the kitchen stuff is where all the store stuff comes from. Matter cannot be destroyed or created only altered. I will agree that some kitchen beautician products are dodgey, I disagree that all homemade products are bad.
    ACV is acid. Baking soda is a base. Water is neutral with a ph of 7, close to human skin and hair. Mixing baking soda with with water does not create an acid. Mixing vinegar and baking soda neutralise one another creating basically water.

    I shampoo with coconut/argan oil-based shampoos about 3x a week (more in the summer when I sweat a lot) and I don't condition at all. This works in a 94% humidity climate like sub-tropical Texas. It would not work if I lived in Arizona where the humidity was close to 0% every day. My hair loves water. I eat a mostly vegan diet and have never had skin/hair problems until the 3 weeks here I've been in Chicago. Now I'm back on conditioners. And I hate it. Stress can cause breakage, too...but I suspect it's the dry air and pollution.
    I understand where the kitchen naturalista's trust issues come from cuz I don't like commercial hair products either...but aren't healthy locs more important? The only way to know if your hair/skin needs help is to listen to it! Read the ingredients before putting anything on your body and learn what your healthiest self feels like! Balance is key. :)
