Your contacts jump around because the noise from torpedoes flying around and your own ship's flow noises drown out the track of contact. If the dotted lines behind are at 95%, that is the most accurate position of your contact and where you should lead your torpedoes to.
You can also fire your torpedoes at waypoints far in front and behind your target. Set them to swing in towards the target once they go active. Your target will be bracketed by both torps and have no idea which direction you actually shot from.

russian torps have larger warheads, especially because they are overall much larger. Russian hulls are generally muh beefier and made of better materials, cruising routinely at 1000 meters depth... why is the game making them more brittle than the US ones?

Alex T Technically, only the Typhoon-, or Russian Akula-Class had a hull made of titanium. It was also the only Russian submarine to feature multiple hull sections, not a single hull separated into compartments, no, the Typhoon has one outer and multiple inner hulls that are connected to each other. Second: Titanium was and is one of the sturdiest and rarest metals known on this planet so the use of it was very rare, espacially in the Soviet Union. It had to be melted, then fitted and couldnt be changed after it was solid again. Again. Neither American nor Soviet aka Russian submarines survive more than one hit. The hull breaks and the crew can, at best, escape before the shit sinks. Get your facts straight, "experts".

airnt actually us subs where designed to survive one torpedo impact to non-critical compartments. Just keep in mind that by no means is it a guaranteed survival, but they had better chances than the soviets. If you really don't like it, there is a realism mod that makes the NATO subs have the same chance of surviving a torpedo as the soviets.
@@skibidi-bop-mm-dada The Typhoon class was designed with the ability to be able to shoot all of it's main payload whilst taking massive damage (irregardless wether the crew survived or not). And no, Alfa-class, Papa-class, and Sierra-class submarines were made with titanium. And yes, while Titanium is hard and expensive it wasn't so "rare" compared to different metals it's very hard to refine this metal as such, making a submarine out of titanium was _very_ unheard of at the time.
they should have been able to surface under the ice, many subs are designed to break though feet of ice while surfacing
*many nuclear subs. But that takes a vertical climb for the sub and is definitely not something you want to do while hunted and possibly spotted by enemy subs. Not only will it make you stand still, the ice breaking will generate enough noise to alert any sub within several miles.
Well only a few feet of ice, if the ice is really thick then there is no chance or surfacing.

How to hunt other subs like pro:
1. Take Alfa II class submarine with top speed of 46 knts.
2. Turn on active sonar.
3. Set speed to max.
4. Go towards enemy subs.
5. Dodge their torpedoes.
6. Use enemy torpedoes to sunk enemy subs.
Be careful when maneuvering with wired tubes in the water, if you turn or change depth too tightly you could break the wires. Drop a countermeasure and dive or rise slowly to avoid enemy torpedoes, and do the torpedo evading before you shoot your fish.
Haven't played this game but I'll have to try it some time. I was a sonar tech (surface ship) for 6 years, and I'm surprised how accurate the passive sonar portion of the game is. That's basically what we did - stared at green lines. We didn't have the nice little comparison database, but we'd line up the frequencies, write them down, find them in the book, and ID them like a fingerprint. Then look for small dopplar shifts up or down to see if they were changing course and to what direction.
It was a LOT harder than it is in the game here, haha. When you have 3 or 4 of your own ships, potentially multiple subs, and a bunch of shipping traffic CZing in from 100 miles away all on top of each other, it's not so clean. Like picking out 4 specific paint splatters in a Jackson Pollock piece.

Here's a tip Raptor; when you see a launch transient from ANY target, immediately counterfire an active torpedo on the same bearing as that is pretty much him giving his position away. Then cut the wire and immediately go ahead flank, full rudder, full dive planes & flood tanks and get away from the torpedo coming at you. If you react fast enough, the enemy torp may not even lock on to you.

In canon the Red October was actually a heavily modified Typhoon class.
TheEventHorizon arktually the red October wasn't real and the movie was based off an incident where a missile cruiser commander wanted to start a mutiny and WW3 so he trapped the captain in an room deep in the ship but was apprehended by other soviet officers
With a bit of the accident on board K19 mixed in.
That story sounds like it fits Crimson Tide better than The Hunt for Red October.

The typhoon class I have also had a pool in it and a gym for the sailors to use it was basically two subs put together side-by-side so that if one side flooded it could be sealed off and they can escape to the other side that’s why it looks so wide because it’s literally two round cylinders side by side connected

Looks like someone made a game that combines the sonar/weps overlays of Microprose's RSR, and the external view of "TOM Clancy's SSN" from the 1990's.

Florian K The full displacement, at deep load, includes the water in the ballast tanks. An empty weight submarine is a LOT less.
Distance calculation made with passive sonar are very difficult to make. You need 2 contacts made from different locations, and the closer those locations are together, the less accurate your distance guess will be.
Also the contact will be moving while you are moving too, complicating your triangulation.
This is why the Typhoons seems to jump around, being closer and farther away.

No surface ships (sadly) but there is a mod that unlocks all Soviet subs to the player.
Last check it also adds newer subs post cold war such as the Seawolf and Virginia class as well as add Royal Navy Dreadnought, Valiant, Swiftshire, Trafalgar and even the Astute. Lots of fun to be had there.
As far as I remember it was called the "Silent Service" not because of any "acoustic-stealth properties" of the subs themselves, but because of the VOW OF SECRECY the American crews in the Pacific Fleet had to undertake, while pursuing the Japanese. It was a very sad story actually - many of those crews were true heroes, many of them died a tragic (and horrible) death fighting the same enemy as the "ships above them" - but nobody knew anything about their "exploits" until after the War. Hell! I remember even some of the families were PREVENTED TO MOURN PUBLICLY their dead relatives killed in action - can you freakin' imagine?... The GAME might even be "exciting" but to go war in a freaking "steel-pipe", no matter how "advanced", with hundreds of meters of deadly-cold water above you, and dozens of meters of ICE on top of all that GIVES ME CLAUSTROPHOBIA! :) If I die in war, at least I wanna die "under the blue sky" and with my feet on the ground, DEFENDING MY SOIL from the enemy - not underwater & under a freaking ice-cap! :D

I just played this particular scenario yesterday in a Skipjack. I was able to sink all three boats with a salvo of 6 torpedos and then I escaped the retaliatory torpedos at full speed.
In real life these sub can break through the ice and launch its missiles.
So does that mean that that submarine is almost half the tonnage of a the Nimitz or Gerald R Ford class, or is there some special thing about the tonnage of subs while submerged? I can't get my head wrapped around a submarine that is half the tonnage of an aircraft carrier.
The water in the ballast tanks adds to the submerged displacement. For a Typhoon, 48,000 tons submerged.
"Vertical launch torpedoes"? How would that work? Besides, Typhoon subs didn't have to peak out of the ice, they could actually break the pack ice from below to surface and launch.

The vertical launching system is not launching torpedoes. They are launching those horrible nuclear ballistic missiles : ) So if the typhoon is in water, against subs, they have nothing more than 6 torpedoes tube

Actually they do have vertical launched torpedoes. They are launched in a vertical position with a solid rocket booster. The torpedo is designed to come down on a target in an arc flight path. This allows the torpedo to reach its target much faster then a conventional one.

I think they should have onboard shots to ramp up the tension and maybe some movie parts after the hits. I like the fact they have tried but I think they could have made it better with being onboard and sailors running around, departments flooding ect

In Red October, The book, (Not sure about movie) The "Red October" Is a heavily modified typhoon class, modifications comprised of stealth mode, more fat(To survive better in winter), and more nukes.

Clearly this is in easy mode. I remember playing _Red October_ on my 1st PC in the 80's. The Soviet attack subs were a handful to say the least.

So why in hell didn't you employ a MOSS first? With a simultaneous torpedo launch on a parallel bearing. If you use the wire guidance to hookshot your torpedoe, you have a reasonably good chance of convincing them that your elsewhere thus avoiding their counterfire.

I felt so sad for the Typhoon getting desperate to avoid the attacks while she tried surfacing up .
just a suggestion: maybe keep one tube for "MOSS"'es and the instant an enemy torp gets out of the tube, you send a Moss to fly passed it at about the point where you expect it to activate, (which takes practice with MOSS'es as they are slow, and loud and will usually trick enemy aircraft and helicopters into think the MOSS is you!, Although i've had instances where the enemy thinks the moss is me, but its more rare.

Umm in the movie red October they never say if its a typhoon class sub the whole idea is they defect so the US can learn how the stealth caterpillar drive works.
the vertical tubes are icbm missiles.... not torpedo's... harpoons (the torpedo fired from a missile) ddin't come out until the seawolf class sub..
I am LONGING for someone to bring out a world war two sub sim where you can play all the powers that had active subs and the game will be done competently (Hey! Ubisoft! There's a new word for you -- yes, competently) and still be immersive. Can you imagine a submarine you can play with where the crew do not get over tired because you choose to speed up time and picked the wrong speed to do it at? Where you can see fish in the water and canyons to hide in. Where you, as Captain, are not asked to BUY fucking torpedoes and Sub upgrades.
Can you imagine coming back from a dangerous mission that almost killed you and the entire crew and being told, "We have good news and bad news. We have developed some fantastic acoustic torps. The bad news is, you don't have enough to buy one. So, you get to die quickly because those old steam torps are going to leave a bubble stream that will point straight at you. You silly little Nazi you!"
