Kyle , you drive the heck out of cars from every angle! To speed to value to efficiency, just really appreciate all your channels I follow them all! Thanks for doin what you do!
Honestly the most impressive feature for me was the phone charging pad cooling. That’s amazing. So many others just end up overheating the phone and throttling back the charging to the point of being useless. Hope more automakers pick this up.
My wife had a 2019 Cayenne e-hybrid and after 40,000 miles the high voltage battery failed, fortunately under warranty. The repair process took 6 months! Kyle - do you know if this new version can limit the maximum battery charge like most electrics. I suspect her battery failed because she charges at home and again at work so 2 full charge cycles a day. She could have partially charged and made the same trip, perhaps this would have been easier on the battery. I realize the hybrid batteries have a few kwhr of built in headroom but can it be programed for a less than "full" charge? Thanks for the nice review.
That doesn't count as 2 full charge cycles unless she used the vast majority of the capacity. But it sounds like it sat at 100% other than maybe a few hours a day, which would be far from ideal. I would expect that a PHEV would be designed with BIG buffers "top and bottom" to mitigate this. It could also be that the battery never got run down "low" to appropriately balance? That seems less likely... Whatever happened, Porsche ate the cost and hopefully is learning how to prevent it on other vehicles
What a great detailed review! I would love to see a comparison with the 2024 BMW X5 50e PHEV, especially how the handling, throttle response, electric/ICE power transition, and brake feel compare
How plug-in hybrids work is if you want the engine to kick in gradually at low speeds and avoid engine kickdown from cold is to use regen at 80-100% where the engine comes on even at 20mls/hr
Seat/seat belt sensors, that's how they get the 2 person demographic. The same sensors can also report how many people are onboard - in case of a collision, the vehicle can call the emergency services.
I wish Toyota showed more of a desire to sell the car as they have not publicized any move to increase production even though demand remains sold out for months or even years. It’s almost as if Toyota is annoyed that the PHEV is as popular as it is in favor of just selling more ICE RAV4s
We have a RAV4 Prime, and in EV mode you can put the pedal to the floor and get to 86 mph before the ICE comes on… very peppy in EV mode, too… sounds like Toyota designed the PHEV drivetrain better than Porsche has … oh, and we got our RAV4 prime for < 1/3 the price of the 2024 cayenne e-hybrid
Another great review Kyle 👏🏻 The future EV Cayenne is going to be a big seller. I bet they’ll put that same dash with actual buttons for the climate etc in the updated Taycan.
I'm a 100% on board with prefering non-coupe SUV's, but I think they did a better job styling the rear end of the 2024 Coupe vs the regular version. Moving the license plate to such a low point kinda gives it a visually heavy look, especially on lighter paint colors.
Very sad to hear about the virtual kick down being gone. My 2023 has that and it’s great, although I wish I had it in hybrid mode as well as e power. Also, the brakes are my biggest gripe. My 23 has steels and it has the same pulsing, grabby brakes when stopping. It really sucks. It’s my biggest fault with the car. On the plus side, we just did nearly 1,600 miles on a tank so even with the older, smaller pack, there is plenty of range and quick charging for daily use.
PHEVs in the real world reduce petrol consumption by 80-90% for most owners, and eliminate the need to put public chargers everywhere. The need for an extremely heavy $$ battery is negated. The need to alter your schedule to conform to your car's charging needs goes away.
(38:05) ... Porsche screwed this up in two ways: (1) they should allow you to floor it and stay in all-electric mode when in E-Power (provided you have enough charge in the traction battery) all the way to 86 mph, just like Toyota has done with their RAV4 Prime; and (2) they should allow one-pedal driving option like Volvo does in their PHEVs now. Porsche should allow one-pedal optional driving in ALL their EVs (PHEVs & BEVs); no excuse for not doing so.
I don't understand your complaint at 32:00 onward when you're in Hybrid mode that the ICE kicks in at a certain point. That's what hybrid driving IS! If you want it to function like an EV, drive in E-Power mode! Or am I missing something?
Hi @kyleconner, I am evaluating the 2024 Cayenne hybrid vs the 2024 BMW X5 50e hybrid. Which one do you recommend? Apart from drive, dynamics, performance, etc., I am concerned that the Porsche doesn't have sufficient trunk/boot space for a family. Is the Porsche that much better than the BMW to do without the extra trunk space? Thanks.
Get the bmw, i have 530e custom build with all the options you can think of and its the best car i have owned. i wish it had b58 but fortunately the x5 does so you are lucky there.
Based on the rear trunk video, it appears that the e-hybrid does not have a spare? Did I miss something? That would be consistent with many other plug-in hybrids. Excellent series overall. Thanks.
Like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. And like them, Alyssa does it all backwards and in heels. The old-timers will know what I'm talking about. Well done you two!!
Did you do a review of the arteon phev you drove in Germany? I know you did a video round the nurburgring in it but wondered how that compared round town in full electric to something like this given the smaller motor and engine combo?
I'm confused as to what you're saying about accelerating and not knowing when the ICE will come on in E-Power mode (35:30-38:20) ... Our RAV4 Prime in EV mode will keep the ICE off with the accelerator pedal to the floor all the way to 86 mph ... If Toyota can make this happen, why can't Porsche? I thought that Porsche had an electric-only "flooring" mode in their E-Hybrids, in which you can floor the pedal from stop and get the 7- or 8-second 0-60 mph figure without the ICE coming on... (?)
I would like to know if you can have the ac or heat going all night while you sleep inside the vehicle, similar to 'camp' mode on a Tesla. To me, that is the only reason I would buy a PHEV, the ability to sleep in a climate controlled space without the engine having to start every 30 minutes to charge up the battery.
The only deal breaker for me - the interior is available only in all black or in base black. That may sound nitpicky, but many of us prefer light interiors and when you start paying upwards of $100K for a vehicle you should be able to get it exactly how you want it.
@@cbatiau2528 yes it is true! Don’t spout off before you go onto Porsche’s website and see for yourself, troll. Every interior offered is either all-black or something else that is two-toned in black. Want a beige interior? If so then ONLY the upholstery becomes beige. The carpeting, door panels, ceiling liner, upper dash, lower dash, and cargo compartment all remain black. Great if you like dark interiors. Not great if you want something else.
I wish car makers would get away from the phone style interface. Having to swipe and find the right “app” is annoying in a car. Not a Tesla fanboy but their layout is so much more intuitive. The controls are all laid out like virtual hard buttons, navigation is always visible, climate is always visible, (same with heated seats/wheel/media, etc) everything is on the home screen. Less used functions like AP settings, safety toggles etc are in a menu but well laid out. Potentially more used things like mirrors, wheel adjustment, etc are in the first page that comes up by default when bringing up the menu.
I was surprised those solar beam chargers I read only have 43kWh internal batteries max (some with only 22 or 32kWh). Doesn't seem very practical to drivers, unless you were able to link them up together to share storage across multiple units... And even a trickle grid connection that kicks on under specific conditions could help a ton. Seems like a device designed to soak up "free" green grants/subsidies/money and provide little actual value to real EV drivers. Those things can't be cheap.
Bring Back Big Beautiful Buttons - touchscreens are for phones, NOT cars. Also, these new cars are so incredibly complex that I think they have no future as used cars. They may be OK for the first three years, but I imagine a future world of nothing but abandoned expensive vehicles, unable to be fixed. Hardly environmentaly friendly in the long term.
At least you were in Malibu, and not in Ventura, where they paint the bike lanes a beautiful, dark green, but they couldn't care less, if all of us driving cars, hit the pot holes!
He says "It's not the nicest engine in the world, but it gets the job done"!!! First of all, with which engines does he compare it with? Nobody buys this car just to get his job done for God's sake!
