One side note. Toph's earthbending is different from the standard. Her bending is instead based on Southern Mantis.
This was done for 2 reasons, firstly she is mostly self-taught/learned directly from badger-moles, and more importantly, she needs a style that will allow her to keep her feet on the ground.
This is why Toph's bending looks so different from everyone else's.
it's so cool to hear about the different real-world martial arts that were the basis for the different bending styles.
And this means, as I'd definitely be a waterbender irl, that Tai Chi would be the martial art for me

One of the worst things about the movie was Ang's angry seriousness. I hope the series doesn't bring a brooding all serious Ang like the movie. One of the key elements of Ang's personality traits is his hopeful, cheerful personality. He is often optimistic and find opportunities to play. The bright side is important to Ang.

Yeah he ran away from being an Avatar because he just wants to be a kid and gets social anxiety and isolation when he's referred as THE kid.

Honestly think the hardest thing for them to translate from the show is going to be the cartoonist humor. I'm curious how the characters themselves will come across, especially sokka. M night pretty much gave up on that aspect.
well Sokka's humor is pretty dry and sarcastic, that's not gonna be a problem adapting, but the physical humor is gonna be difficult if they attempt it. Like Aang skirting behind Zuko during their fight in the ship, that would look very unrealistic and clunky irl

They need to let them go, not what works for cartoon, does not always work for live action. It'll be wise to cut back some of that goofiness
They can tone down the animated goofiness while keeping the more lighthearted dialog and overall tone of some scenes. Yes I also agree that some of the more childish bits, especially in S1, could be cut or changed to be less ridiculous (penguin sledding) without completely losing the message.

I think the best example of different bending styles in the show is in The Avatar and The Fire Lord episode where Roku bends all four elements at once, you can clearly see how much attention to detail was put into the movement, absolutely beautiful work.
Then korra reduced bending to flailing limbs and masterfully throwing out elements

Idc if its from the creators. They clearly suck at making all the decisions and being creative. Remember, bryke didnt invent the story, the lines written for the characters, they didnt create katara or sokka, or appa. They invented aang zuko and some rough idea of the little monk going on some epic journey to learn all the elements and using kungfu for bending. To bring that idea to life they got professionals to do it. After their success they wanted to be the ones writing and directing. And it turned out to be a professionally produced fanfic. Gross.
@@michaelgarrett139 but it kind of does. It’s like language; it’s bound to change over time. Lightning used to be rare and only talented firebenders could generate it and blast through walls, but now your everyday fire bender can generate it for factories, but at the cost of power. That’s a change in technique. And tlok didn’t just scrap everything for punches and jab. I mean, look at tenzin. Also, we got benders like kuvira and unalaq who aren’t just punch punch jab jab whoosh whoosh.
For the 'who are they fighting?' There's 2 possible enemies that fit the criteria of dangerous enough, and showing up early in season 1 that you missed, the eventually admiral Zhao, and the pirates Katara steals the scroll from, the latter aren't guaranteed to be in the new show but given they're aiming for an older audience a much more violent and just as angry Zhao, who's more directly involved in hunting the main cast is most likely
I think another one could be the rough rhinos. It's the group that attacks the kioshi warriors I think?
The way they're standing in a circle is kind of why I think that, I think it's very similar to when they're first attacked by them while camping.

@@TheB0sssThis is what I was thinking, in the Appa shot, there are some rough looking firebenders whose outfits all look different. I was thinking the Rough Rinos. But them being cut from the show would make more sense to me tbf
As someone who owns a tomahawk, Sokka's boomerang sheath may be like that....instead of a sword sheath where he would simply slide it in and out from one narrow opening due to the lack of such a big kink as the boomerang has, it's likely he slides it in as the whole top is open enough to slide in and maybe has a snap closure to keep the weapon from falling out while he's running or rolling out of the way. I don't see a closure so it could also just be a tight enough fit given it looks to be made of leather with some inner padding. Sokka's boomerang has always looked like a cross between a fighting boomerang that's not meant to return, and an axe which he can use as a tool or for up close fighting.
I have to imagine with the amount of investment going into this live action that the acting also had to help motivate their investments if that makes sense. So pumped for this! Hoping for some much better acting this go round!

3:07 couldn't this also be the scene where the gang was ambushed by the pirates for stealing the scroll? Part of it also happened in a forest. That could explain Kataras worried facial expression. Maybe more guilt than worry?
That's what I was thinking the whole time! Glad to see somebody having the same idea. The only problem with this shot is that there should be pirates all around them, which isn't the case in this picture.
I really hope the series shows some changes to the cartoon that explain some more mysterious aspects. Like why Aang got the Avatar State back after getting poked in the back.
My head cannon for that scene is that Aang's chi was like stuck/trapped in that wound since technically it killed him. That same wound being hurt again unlocked/freed it by either reminding him of it, somehow waking up the avatar state or something else along those lines.
There was a canon game on Nickelodeon website when avatar was on tv that showed while unconscious his journey to recovering the Avatar spirit; that how we learned Avatar KYOSHI created the Dai LI agents though that journey on the game

I still think it's a shot from the Jet episode. They're all back to back, implying they're surrounded. If it was Hei bai they would all be focused on the same point. I think instead of walking into the Fire Nation soldiers, the soldiers will come to them, and Jet and the freedom fighters will save the day.
One still frame of Jet near a town doesn't mean that that will be the only setting we will see the character in. Is it confirmed to be Ba Sing Se? I thought it was the earth kingdom village that Jet planned to destroy.
The part with Appa flying them away could be when they're fleeing Kyoshi. Aang isn't running because they couldn't handle the soldiers. He's running because he can see the destruction being caused to the town simply because he stayed too long. It's also surrounded by nature. I think the soldiers are following them out of the town leading to this shot.
this scene looks like its on kyoshi island with the kyoshi warriors about to jump down from trees and kidnap them to me

Jet’s picture has a very warm red background, which correlates to the show. When the gaang stumbled upon the fire nation soldiers in the animation it still had that red hue atmosphere, which leads me to think it isn’t that scene. It could be when they are ambushed by the pirates since that was in a forest scene.
I have a feeling that part was when the pirates attacked and the fire nation fighting eachother trying to get aang
Im cautiously optimistic about the series. It looks very promising so far. Im very curious how the spirits will look like, especially Koh, Hei-Bai and Wan-Shi-Tong
Well with what they clearly got right so far from the costume designs, to the martial art styles, character resemblance. I don't think they would butcher it by doing poorly on the spirit designs.
Katara's hems being decorated with waves will never be explained. The answer to why she has them and Sokka does not is because the match her character. The costumers wanted to give her that nice little touch. Sometimes, that is enough. I really like the design, even under that assumption. In-world, we can try to keep an eye out for others having it and then find patterns. I rather think that no-one else will have them - that this is Katara-specific so that she is special. If so, then we can just say that she or her Gran-Gran or someone put in extra work for her in order to add this little decoration because it is beautiful or because she likes it.
The quality of 2024 in the Avatar community is going to be entirely dependent on the quality of this show. I hope that we all have a great year!

i think you are right, in the animation katara was the one who was fixing sokkas clothes, so it could be that she being the one to fix her own clothes as well put in some extra time to add the waves as a lil creative way to express herself, and i think she would be someone to take better care of her clothes compared to her brother, so it wouldnt feel as such a waste to put all the hours in to embroider.

Yeah we don't need an in-depth backstory or flashback for every single little detail lol
Katara looks mid-sentence so that could explain her expression, if this is a moment pulled directly from Book One I'd think it would HAVE to be the Jet episode as the forest looks too healthy for this to be Winter Solstice Part One.
But my personal theory is that this may be a less direct adaption of a specific scene from the cartoon, especially given this is likely a fight with Zhao. The casting announcements basically confirm they'll be cutting "The Desserter" but given that was the only episode where Zhao was dealing with the gaang WITHOUT involving Zuko, they may be at least taking inspiration from that episode's fight scene in order to build up Zhao as an antagonist directly to the gaang. Otherwise he'd only see them twice before shit goes down at the North Pole- briefly at the end of Winter Solstice Part 2 and seeing Aaang only during The Blue Spirit- and he'd basically end up as a Zuko only antagonist, when he needs to be a known and quantifiable threat to the gaang.
So I'm guessing they're adding a fight scene with Zhao that wasn't in the original show to establish him, maybe taking a little inspiration from the fights in The Water Bending Scroll (their positioning makes me think of it, and no casting announcements for the pirates likely means the episode is getting cut) and the opening scene of Avatar Day (I know that's Book 2, but I can't imagine they're adapting it, and the scene with them flying off on Appa feels similar). This reasoning could also probably explain why Zhao appears to be in the scene where Aang's possessed by Kyoshi, they need to keep his presence felt in the show otherwise he'd end up falling flat as the season's big bad.
I think they’re either combining jet and kyoshi or jet and omashu, from the looks I think it makes more sense to combine jet and omashu since the omashu portion was lacking depth in S1.

I hope you're wrong about Jet being in Ba Sing Se in the promo image. It would throw off the travel timeline too much for me. Maybe he is in the village that he plans to destroy with the dam? It could be in the first half of the episode, before the twist, with Jet being friendly and charming, showing them around. It doesn't fit perfectly since you'd expect the fire nation guards in the town to recognize him, but who knows?
I mean: At some point in time Jet totally shows up in Ba Sing Se. And TV shows and movies are not always recorded in order. Jet doesn't have that many appearances, so it makes sense to record all his scenes at once to keep the costs down. They have put so much efford in details that i am pretty confident they will not mess up the story that much.

@delqyrus2619 The first Netflix season is only covering season 1 of the show. Jet doesn't get to Ba Sing Se until halfway through season 2, Ba Sing Se isn't even shown on screen until season 2. If the Netflix series shows any characters in Ba Sing Se during this season, then they changed the travel timeline.

@delqyrus2619 That would make sense if they were filming the entire series. They don't film multiple seasons at once. They will have only shot the first season, in which Jet should not be in Ba Sing Se.
I think the photo is the first fight versus Admiral Zhao with additional Zuko and Uncle Iroh introduction. The team will be introduced to how strong and careless Zuko is, and the audience will be introduce to Uncle Iroh's personality. Since Katara is scared, that is for sure a fire nation troops that she met or encountered before during her days in the southern water tribe. You know, Katara's background where the southern water tribe have to hide her because she can water bend. I don't know if I'm remembering things right.

This seems like the warriors of Keyoshi episode, in the forest between the beach and the village. Could be the keyoshi warriors attacking swiftly from the trees. Hence why Katara looks so unskilled and Aang looks so serious. He has no clue about the existence of the warriors, so he’s likely assuming that it’s a fire nation ambush, considering the last encounter they had was escaping Zuko and then discovering the remains of a wiped out air temple. Remember that Aang just recently triggered the avatar state twice because of fire benders, so I bet he has a serious bone to pick with them right now.

Love the content! I keep up with avatar online shit religiously but I love having a place for positive discourse on it - just btw there are lots of short shots of sokkas boomerang holder in the show and it’s a 1:1 pretty much as well!
The boomerang back scabbard works just like the best design for a back scabbard for a sword. It actually does just slide in. almost the entire top is open, with a slight lip to help hold the boomerang in place. There may even be a clasp to add extra security for when he is in water or the sky.
I also think we will get a last trailer maybe at the Super Bowl halftime show? That would be epic for the launch of this show.
I can not express how this actually makes me tear up with joy to watch this masterpiece of a show come alive for the next generation I just hope they keep the same amazing lessons that we learned from the show
I fkng hate it when people disregard the validity of animation as something on the same level as live action. Wdym "come alive"? The animated version itself is enough. It feels alive already. What more do you want. That's the reason why y'all are bound to be disappointed and you deserve it. Pay animation some respect, you just look like a fake fan. Making an animated story into live action doesn't make it better. Deal with it.

5:10, I believe he will get it in by sliding it through the side rather then the top, as you would with a sword. I remember watching a video on why drawing a sword from your back is hard and not what was historically used, and then they preceded to create prototype holsters that could make drawing a sword from your back more possible and it involved have a slit on the side of the holster for the sword to have a way to slide up and to the side making it easier to draw the sword from your back. I think that would make perfect sense for sokkas boomerang

Zuko and Sokka cast dont fit in any regard and they are fucking adults pretending to be kids, how more do you wanna stand out and breaking the immersion, its fucking stupid honestly, why the fuck they couldnt cast anyone more fitting than those 2, the worst of them is sokka he just dont fit even a sligtly bit to represent him...
@@dreckigerdan3739 well from what I understand it's not supposed to be an exact copy, just their own version of it. Plus it didn't seem that odd really. Like Zuko I get, but Sokka, nah. Sokka needs someone like him as even though he joked around about being some brave Warrior or what not at times, it he did have a much more mature setting than aang and katara. Then again it's been like a few years since I watched the anime/cartoon so idk how much I'm remembering correctly. At the very least, it's 10 billion times better than the shitty movie.

I just dont understand their decision

And this is my whole point, he simply stands out way too much and doesnt fit at all to play sokka, the first time i saw him i didnt even think of him as sokka, just later where he stood next to everyone else i was shocked and tought to myself how could he possibly got that role? I mean it is an adaption you want your actors to look somehow alike as the source material. imagine they would have casted someone completely differnt in one piece who wouldnt even resemble luffy the slightest, i think everyone would be pretty mad at them so i am mad at them for casting a sokka who doesnt resemble him one bit... after zuko, sokka was my favourite character and they fucked up in both of them to cast someone way more fitting....

If I had to guess this is when they stumble on a fire nation army right before Jet arrives. There's not alot of moments in S1 where they all hold their ground and fight in the forest like this image.

there's probably a slit along the side of the boomerang sheath that it slides into, like an axe sheath, it slides into the side of the sheath and has a strap to hold it in place, so I feel like the boomerang sheath uses the same format

I doubt Ba Sing Se will be introduced in this Season bro so I don’t think that’s where they’ll be meeting Jet.
Jet is introduced in S1 and comes back later in Ba Sing Sa. Jet has already been cast and they've only cast S1 characters.

The smile and happy face of Aang 😊 is the one lacking from the movie. Remember he is just a kid, he just want to play and don't want any responsibility. Hope they can restore that 😉
I commented this on the last video, but I don't think that Jet scene is in Omashu, I think it's the abbey where they had the show down with June. I honestly think it makes a lot of sense that the A plot from Jet and the B plot from Bato of the Water Tribe are being merged together. Zuko wasn't in the original Jet episode so they're going to need to give him something to do, and they haven't cast Bato so they need to have another set up for that fight to still include the showdown with June. Maybe instead of taking care of Bato, the nuns instead had taken care of Jet and/or the other freedom fighters after they were left orphaned by the war, so when Jet plans on destroying the Fire nation village, he's deliberate about making sure it's not going to affect the abbey and thus it's the safe place where he's planning on hiding out while they flood the valley, leading Aang and Katara to confront him there instead.
I think it would also make sense logistically, Aang could be fighting Jet but instead of his glider getting damaged (because they never explained how he could have repaired that) Zuko showing up stops him from going to save the village. Katara steps in to fight Jet, Appa verses Nala can still happen, and once Katara's frozen Jet to the wall she could be freed up to bend the perfume at the shirshu. She or Aang could easily be the one to figure out the trick with the perfume, Sokka isn't really fully necessary to be there for them to work that out, that frees him up to be instead out of that fight evacuating the village. Plus, because they'll probably be keeping the necklace subplot in because of June, this would then result in Aang returning the necklace to Katara right when she's dealing with her heartbreak over Jet's betrayal, adding emphasis to the romantic undertones of that moment as it's a pretty significant moment in the Kataang story arc.
Honestly the more I've thought about it, the more it makes a weird amount of sense to combine these two episodes. I could 100% be wrong, but at this point I'd almost be more surprised if this DIDN'T happen.

What makes you so confident that Jets location is in Ba Sing Se now?
Can't that location just be the Earth Kingdom village that was being occupied by the fire Nation? I know we technically don't see him there in the show but I still feel like it's a stretch to say confidently that's Ba Sing Se.
Boomerang holster is open in the top. Its just the bottom and sides that are closed. Thats how a ton of holsters are made for curved/bent/notched weapons irl. I mean even gun holsters.

I'm guilty of marathoning shows that drop on netflix- such a s stranger things- in two days, so I'm kinda hoping they do a weekly release to promote a sense of community and allow speculation without spoilers since they are changing around the story a bit

Seems to me this is probably the moment they get ambushed by the Kyoshi Warriors shortly after arriving on Kyoshi Island. By the way, The location in Jet's image is more likely Gaipan Village, the village they flood in the show, not Ba Sing Se.
I found a picture of Sokka's boomerang holder and it does look like this but... the one here is upside down. I believe the long part of the boomerang where he holds it suppose to slide in first.

I love the analysis here. To answer the boomerang sheath question, I would speculate that it's made from dried hide and holds a closed form around the weapon. If it's made to retake a shape then the boomerang could slide into the pouch from the side and still be secured during intense activity.
Yeah. There are plenty of sword sheaths that don't close all the way down the blade, I'm guessing it's the same. It seems like you can even see in the screenshot that most of the inner 'L' isn't as thick of material as the end of it, implying it only has a closed edge on that last part.
