I think the fact Aang was literally responsible for the entire world, as well as an entire culture is important to consider before we toss around judgment. He wasn't bad to his other kids. He just lived for a purpose, and like many people of purpose was often distracted from all else

    • @matthewkuscienko4616

Considering that he was not only the last airbender (at least until Tenzin was born) and also the avatar, it's safe to say he had a massive responsibility to bear in his lifetime, so it's understandable that he would feel pressured to prioritize those duties even if it was at the cost of his family life. The fact that people think he wasn't good to his kids as a father shows that they don't understand how big of a responsibility Aang had, given the circumstances in which he had to live through during his lifetime

    • @bunniesrunup

It's literally just bad writing. Aang is all about more the merrier and loves sharing his culture, he literally had a group of air acolytes who he shared air nomad culture with, so why would he turn around and npt share it with his own children? It's simply bad writing.
In the rift comic, we see how much aang loves sharing his culture, to the point he was quite mad at toph for refusing to take part.
And yes, people change but in anags case no. The fact aang had acolytes eveb when he was older proves that no, he didn't change and still lives sharing his culture.
Furthermore, aang being a bad father would make katara a bad mother because she let her husband neglect her other kids. Which also would make very little sense. Especially when you consider how katara felt when her dad left, you'd know she never let her children go through that aswell.
But since it wasn't actually confirmed, and we only got bumi and kyas perspective, we don't known if it's actually true. Bumi and kya are old, fr all we know they could've been bluffing.
But yeah, there's no justifying it, it's simply horrible writing and doenst go with aangs charecter at all.

@@bunniesrunup you reasoning about Katara being a bad mom makes no sense. She's a bad mom cause she can't corral the strongest and busiest person alive to spend time with his kids? All she could do was step up and try to be mom and dad, having to do that doesn't make you a bad parent. She could have also sulked around at the fact that her husband was rarely around,or just retreated all together but she didn't and ALL her kids love and respect her.

According to 2/3 of his kids he wasn't there for them. He was a neglectful parent and while he had reasons to be it doesn't change the fact that he was. Also, Tenzin obviously proved the man had enough time to spend with his kids but only the one he favored. That's not good parenting.

The problem with the notion that Aang is a bad father goes back to who he is: The Avatar. It's not that Aang was intentionally neglectful. He wanted to be there for all his children. But as Avatar Yangchen stated "but the Avatar can never do that. Your sole duty is TO the world."
Aang had to put everything in his life second to his duty as the Avatar and bring balance to a world left in shambles after a century of war. This includes restoring the Air Nomad culture that was all but lost during the genocide.

    • @alexanderbarnett4948

well yes, that can explain the favoritism to tenzin- a new master to teach the next avatar. But at the same time, he was trying to keep his culture and bloodline in tact. Who knows if either of the non benders will have airbending kids down the line. Tenzin was as sure of a bet as possible, in terms of both teaching airbending, making more benders, and contining to share, and recreate his culture and home.

    • @LH-kw9hi
      @LH-kw9hi 3 месяца назад +8

Aang's dedication to maintaining balance in the world is definitely a factor in his struggle for maintaining balance in his family, but I think his upbringing is an overlooked factor as well.
Aang was raised not by his parents, but by the monks as a community; he did not have a model of parenting in a nuclear family and may have struggled with his role as a father. While he had Gyatso for companionship and social support, it's still not the same as having a dedicated father. Their relationship was largely based around mentorship of Air Nomad culture and airbending -- which clearly played heavily in his relationship with Tenzin and may have felt more natural to him regarding how to nurture.
I'm really curious about Aang's reaction to the birth of his children, especially with Tenzin being the youngest. No doubt he had to feel some disappointment (in addition to deep affection) when he and Katara had a non-bender and waterbender first, given his desire to revive the Air Nomads. Perhaps all that anticipation, finally realized with Tenzin, also added to his lopsided attention for Tenzin.

Kyoshi and Aang were exceptions. In 10000 years, we know that there has been nearly 200 Avatars (according to unofficial sources, Aang should be number 170,174,178,182,186, or 190, because Air is the second element in the cycle it would follow 4x+2 with x representing the number of completed cycles). Kuruk is the youngest recorded death in his mid-thirties, Kyoshi is by far the oldest at 210. If you account for Aang and Kyoshi by removing 376 years from 10000 and divide by 180 (for simplicity, Korra and Wan are counted together as Korra fills in the gap in Wans life before his harmonic convergence) you'd get an average of approximately 66 years, which makes sense if you look at the life of an important being constantly getting into fights. Assassination, overestimating their own talent, underestimating their opponent, extreme natural disaster (Roku), or dying in combat due to age. Kyoshi learned how to extend her life, and Aang died at 66 biologically because of his century on ice. They are stand outs and unrealistic in the grand scheme of things, especially when you look at the Water avatars we know of, Kuruk and Korra, and the absolute struggle they had constantly (in Kuruk's case, after he lost his bride to Koh and stopped messing around). We know from the setting of the next Avatar show that Korra likely hits 80. It's supposed to jump from the roaring twenties to near modern-day technologically. With bending serving as reason for non benders to accelerate the industrial advancement, it could be slightly quicker than in reality.

For anyone who thinks Korra’s connection to the past avatars severation is permenant, read this:
If you don’t know, there’s a running theory or plot line that every avatar has been cursed to fix the previous avatars mistakes. S’Zeto a fire avatar ignored the Earth, Water, and Air nations and solely focused on bettering the Fire Nation specifically, leaving Yangchen, the air avatar after him to spend all her time focusing on international problems to fix what S’Zeto started, but neglecting the spiritual duties of the avatar. Which caused the avatar after Yangchen, Avatar Kuruk to spend his life fixing the spiritual problems but neglecting the physical world which led to infighting and civil wars in the earth kingdom. Which Kyoshi the earth avatar after Kuruk had to fix, but by focusing on that she neglected international problems and let wars start, which Roku had to fix blahblahblah and then he started the 100 year war which Aang had to fix and he neglected air nation blahblahblah then Korra had to fix that in LOK. Point being, if this eternal trend holds up, this next earth avatar should fix Korra’s biggest mistake, letting the ties between her past lives be severed.

Imaging that you are the last airbender in entire whole world, try to "create" new airbender but no, non-bender and waterbender come out, that would be really painful. Tenzin maybe is the most important thing in his life. Kya and Bumi, even Katara maybe should understand how important Tenzin is, so Aang treated him differently. Call him is a bad father would be a little harsh for him.

I have watched this cartoon series back in college (may sound weird) ever since it has taught me a lot about how to live my life.
Watching this video, although knowing everything has to come an end, it literally brought years to my eyes.
I just love this series! (Watched only the first 3 seasons, didn't want to ruin the impression it gave me over the years)

I hate that Aang wasn't great to his other kids. I feel like that's not true to Aang's character. Ik having so much responsibility can be very tough and it becomes easy to neglect things, but Aang was so wise and seemed to have genuine care for everyone, that it doesn't seem like he'd neglect his non-airbender kids. While it does make sense that Aang would be so focused on rebuilding the Air Nomads and Tenzin would prob be his favorite child, I still refuse to believe Aang would neglect his other children to the point where they'd feel so much hurt even years after his passing. TLOK seemed to tackle many social issues and I imagine that this kind of parenting is one of those, but it felt unfair to Aang's character imo. Then again maybe it just shows us that not everything and everyone is perfect, but it still hurts me to see how Aang's children feel about their relationship with him.

@youngmaster if you’re watching this one it did say what earlier told you about air nomad Tattoo rituals, which was “ the only way an air nomad gets their tattoos is either they gain the title of air bending master or when they Turn 16 years old “ so this video just noted that the one earlier Quote was true about air bending culture, so I told you this was right an while back….if you remember what I said on that commentary…( see part age 6-12 in the video) because in series 2 the ceremony is call “the anointing ceremony “

      @chriscjongeneelen2960 Год назад +1

Which only concludes that if any air nomads who had survived the attacks of the air temples as an earlier video theorized they would have had to be ones under 16 years old, to have been the ancestors of the ones whose powers of air bending were repressed or not passed down to their descendants who couldn’t use air bending until after harmonic convergence in series 2 canon lore ( see season 3 ) because I mentioned all of this in the video from this webpage on RUclips with (the Ty-lee air nomad theory video ) made by this video’s web creator an while back ….

We know the exact timestamp for Aang's death because Korra was born at the exact same time. Aang had one heck of a life for an Avatar and was truly one of the best Avatars to ever exist. He united the world after the war ended. Korra just helped to mop up what problems were left afterwards and reversing the separation the Avatar Juan did between the spirit world and the human world was a questionable decision, but something only the Avatar can really do.

For everyone still hating on LoK for "killing off the previous Avatars".
    It did no such thing.
Remember how the Spirit World works, as shown in LoK.
In order to contact a spirit, you must FIND that spirit.
Vaatu only broke the connection that allowed the Avatar to contact their previous lives largely at will.
All other knowledge of them exists.
The spirits of the previous Avatars still exist.
One of the tasks Korra may undertake is finding and reestablishing those connections.
Perhaps she passes this task along, through the remnants of Team Korra, to Genji or whomever the canon Earth incarnation is.
Perhaps this is a new ability that makes the Avatar even stronger.
In the same way that Aang brought Energy Bending into the Avatar repertoire, so too may Korra bring "Spirit Connection", allowing the Avatar to form connections with the spirits they deem important.
Once those connections are formed, successive Avatars can call upon these connections to learn from the spirit again and again.
Imagine how powerful the Avatar could become if they always had a connection to Uncle Iroh.

That could be really good story line …. In order to make connections with the previous avatars the new earth Avatar meets the spirits of previous avatars and in order to make connections they all tell him their life story (which would be really cool cause that way we will get to see all the avatars)😭😭

I really like legend of korra but I don't like how they treated the original characters. making kya and bumi feel neglected by aang really sucks even though it's realistic since he had so many responsibilities. making toph a bad mom also felt weird to me, but I guess it's just because I was attached to these characters and hate seeing them mess up so bad. I'm just happy zuko and katara weren't ever said to be bad parents and I genuinely hope that doesn't happen in future comics or upcoming movie

I think DiMartino and Konietzko should do a short movie based on the last moments of Aang's time connecting to Korra's last moments leading up to the start of the next avatar in the cycle. Would give us a proper send off and see how it will give a clue to the next avatar who's life's work would be dedicated to mending the broken to the past Avatars. Not talking about a complete retcon here, but I think it would be a near impossible ordeal for the next generation to overcome whatever new evils that shall arise. Maybe the creators are working on something like that idk lol
