The strategy of Ottomans, on the other hand, should be greatly appreciated: Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.

You cannot underestimate the gravity of this event. The end of a empire, of 1,500 years of age, finally comes to a close. It is a unfortunate reality, that, coming to this, they weren’t recognized as rome, yet replaced by obscure emperor from Germany. The breath of the last soldier would be the last recorded breath of the Roman Empire. It’s still crazy how, constantinople was attacked two times during the Macedonian Dynasty. It's a sad reality that, out of all the emperors of the history of the Western Roman Empire, only a few of them were great, and one of the few greats, had the worst event in history. He did everything to save the empire, from aligning himself with the Catholic Church which the civilians did not like, to even giving gifts to the Ottomans. If Constantine the XI was in a better era, say after Justinian the Great had died, Byzantium would have lasted longer. Even against all odds, in Constantinople, he never surrendered. None of his men did. Even when given the opportunity to retreat, he stayed with his empire. With the last of his men, he charged into battle, never to be seen again. After Justinian's death it was even worse than this.. The constant Avar, Slav, Persian raids.. The Slavs got to Morea barely sparing Epirus and getting to Adrianople, with Salonika unable to defend itself as it was encircled by the Slavs (Salonika was besieged twice during the Slavic migrations!) The Slavs having been allies of the Turk Avars.. It could not be that easy! The Avars were on the Pannonian Plain and still standing strong only aiding the Slavs, meaning that if the Byzantines were to attack them, they would have to go through the Slavs And lets not forget the Persians, who at this point would dominate Anatolia, and alone were a bit stronger than the Byzantines

I don't want to make anyone mad, just for the people who say these Romans weren't Greek. The people of Eastern called themselves Romans, but that didn't mean they were Italians. Many civilisation of the empire called themselves Romans before the empire splitting. The Eastern Romans were Armenians, Bulgarians, Slavs, but mostly Greeks. Their culture, language etc. was Greek so basically they were Greeks too. Indeed there were Romans from the original Roman empire but after the creation of Western and Eastern empire most of them stayed in the Western.
Roman is a culture instead of a race. Romans got assimilated into what we call Italians today and at this point Italians aren't even Romans because the culture is very different. It would be fair for Greeks to call themselves Romans as they saw themselves as one, but so did the Turks at the time.
In 1453, the Ottoman Empire was not yet a great state. It is impossible to have 130,000 soldiers. Modern sources say that the Turkish army numbered 60,000-80,000 people, while the Roman army numbered 40,000 people, including 10,000 professionals and 30,000 militia.

The Fall of Constantinople is a personal misfortune that happened to all of us only last week.
Nevertheless, the strategy of Ottomans should be greatly appreciated:
Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.
