@@youneskasdi Like, several reasons. 1. Russia claimed the title of "Thrid Rome" mostly for the religious reasons, not political, this is why they never took the name officialy, unlike HRE. 2. Vasiliy's son got married to the niece of last Byzantium Emperor, Constantin the 11th, thus making Rurik and Palaeologus dynaties to be raltives. 3. They simply wanted to poke Emperor, by saying something like "look, we are equals to you, you claim to inheret West, we claim to inheret East of Rome. Btw, poits 2 and 3 are also the reasons why Russia has eagle with two heads as their coat of arms.

The strategy of Ottomans, on the other hand, should be greatly appreciated:
Instead of conquering the city (which was extremely well protected by high wall and seawater) directly, Ottomans had purposely occupied most of the original territories of the Empire first and the Empire thus became much weaker before the final war in 1453. Since the Empire had lost control of most trade routes in Argean Sea either, the 'Romans' eventually lacked any financial and material supports outside the city during the time of siege. The victory of Ottomans was then just a matter of time.

I believe it's important to note that the fall of Constantinople also contributed to Spain and other European countries being more interested in alternate trade routes, because going through Constantinople was a major trading route and the Ottomans taking Constantinople shut down that trading route or restricted it a lot. This helped to convince Spain about 100-150 years later to go along with Columbus's suggestion of sailing west. I think it's important to also note based on this video that Columbus was also from Genoa. Given he grew up there I'm sure he was exposed to the negative reactions of Constantinople's fall and the economic impact that had on Genoa.

@Eric Rogers that's a bit too broad of a statement. I mean, the Western Roman Empire was the lesser half for basically the 4th and 5th centuries, and even after the 476 fall of Rome the "Byzantines" did not experience a drastic change. Sure, they slowly evolved into something different than the 2nd century romans, but even then, the roman empire wasn't culturally stable for it's entire existence either. Also, you need to remember that for it's entire existence as a massive empire, Rome was half Latin and half Greek, so it's hard to pinpoint what "Romanised" really even means.

Actually the lack of reaction from many Catholic states could be attributed to the defeat of Crusade against the Ottomans just a decade prior to the fall of the City, in which Poland, Hungary, HRE took part. Catholic alliance of potentially interested major powers was soundly beaten and one of the strategic goals of the coalition was hampering of Ottoman expansion towards Byzantines. Once the Crusade of Varna failed, Constantinopole was pretty much lost, it just took 10 years to die.

Turks lost way more in the war than the crusaders the main reason it was lost because both the monarchs of Poland and Hungary were killed in the war and the successors of those nation werent so interested in the war so they ordered to end the war immediately

I live at the point where Constantinople was conquered (Ayvansaray). My house is just below the Roman Empire Palace. I get very emotional when I think of the war and conquest that took place here. When the municipality excavates any street here, the bones of people who fought in that period are still revealed. Right next to us, a 100-year-old house was destroyed and a Byzantine tomb was found under it. We live on a very large and rich history. I have endless respect for the Roman Empire, who created this history, and the Turks who preserved and maintained it.

That’s a great topic, but your video has a couple inaccuracies
    1) It wasn’t like the Italians or even Europe only knew about the situation after the city had already fallen. They were aware of the siege, but for the most part had faith in the famous walls that had defeated so many invaders. Since they were unaware of the Ottoman canons, they thought it was just another failed siege. And the Italians, include the Pope himself even sent a couple soldiers to help the Byzantines.
    2) When the city eventually fell, it wasn’t ignored by Europe. At least by all of it. King Afonso V of Portugal gathered a large army and was ready to lead the crusade, but had to cancel his plans since no other major power joined and he was in the opposite part of the continent. So at least Portugal *did* react, it simply hadn’t the means to do anything alone.
The Europeans were confident in the mythic Walls of Constantinople. The use of canons was something relatively new to them. They only full understood the danger of the Ottomans when Constantinople fell, and nothing could be done.

And this is why the video IS WRONG - there was other reaction in Europe but since nobody care about the European countires which didnt speak French, English or German nobody bothered to look up for what their thouht.
      Just a few quick example:
-Kingdom of Hungary (where the king had the second biggest income only overshadowed by the King of French at the time) all of a sudden stopped the almost 50 year long civil war between the Pro-Habsburg and Pro-Jagello faction, strated to strenghten the border fortress system in the southern border and started a military campaign against the Ottomans (which culminated in the Battle of Krusevac in late 1454 and aimed to push the Ottomans out of Serbia and create a safe route of communication between Hungary and Albania)
-Bohemia and Poland also supported Hungary in these Anti-Ottoman endeavors both financially and with raw manpower, so their acted too - just more indirectly.
-Portugal de-facto started the whole "explore the unknown regions and hopefully get India with a boat" endeavor because of the Fall of Constantinople.
But all of this is not fit into the western-europe centric historical revisionism, i know, i know. We are just useful idiots who didnt do anything until the Horde come for us and beg the West to save us in the region all the time - its not like we fight against the Horde to from the getgo or anything while the "enlightened" West have the luxury of ignoring everything happening in the world. Being the Bulwark of Christendom is really a undervalued and ungrateful thing... Hundreds of Millins died to protect Europe didnt even make it into the side note and counted as "everyone had more pressing issues" or "just didnt cared". The Ottoman issue WAS the main issue since the second half of the 14th century till early 18th century in the Kingdom of Hungary - just saying.

Ivan III (who ruled after the blind prince in the video) later married a Byzantine princess, Sophia Palaiologina, who brought with her the court ceremonies of Byzantium. Ivan styled himself "tsar" (caesar) and adopted the symbol of the Orthodox Roman Empire, the double headed eagle, which is still used in Russia and many nations whose territory was once controlled by Byzantium, and which symbolized the symphonia, or harmony of Church and Empire. The idea had developed during the first 500 years of Christianity that God had providentially made the Roman Empire His chosen vessel for bringing the world into the Church, and so the idea of an Orthodox Imperium became very important in Eastern Orthodox thinking. Thus Russia became the continuation of Rome's legacy as an Orthodox imperium.

    • @JustGeridan
      @JustGeridan 4 года назад +4

@@blueangel4ever370 of course, even America has pretensions of being "Roman", just look at the architecture in DC. I think the difference with Russia is 1. Continuity of faith, as an Orthodox empire, and 2. The passing down of the court rituals and Byzantine forms of government in Ivan's court and legal codes. Those other nations, like the HRE, might have laid claim to be the successors of the Roman Empire, but were their governments really reflective of it? I think it's a pretty easy case to demonstrate that the way Russia operated as an empire is the most similar to how Rome was post-Constantine. The key distinction is the view Russia (and Byzantium) had for themselves in history: as God's kingdom on Earth, protectors of the Church. In the West, there was a similar idea in Charlemagne's "Christendom" but it was wrapped up in the Papacy, and the Popes became greater in temporal power and authority than the Holy Roman Emperors. In the East, the Church remained in the spiritual realm, while emperors remained the highest temporal authority.

Italy is just a top candidate for the succession because of the pope, Rome, etc. I actually don't think the Russians are the closest, they explicitly separated their church from the eastern Roman empire and never wanted to become similar to Greece, they have no geographically claims at all, not even a remotely similar language, and the symbols were used by many nations, including Austria

Also Hungary, as one of the leading European powers, was scared that they'll have to face Ottoman invasion alone. And indeed, Balkan was fully conquered by the end of the XV century, while Hungary lost its independence to the Turks by the second half of the XVI century. Thus, when in Western Europe XV and XVI century mark the beginning of renesance and new bright age, for people of Balkans and central Europe XV and XVI centuries mark the beginning of centuries long Ottoman occupation and (both metaphorical and real) slavery!

Ottomans: “you can’t keep using medieval warfare, that’s against the rules”
    Poland: *laughs in Winged Hussar*
Eastern/Central Europe: “Finally, we’ve halted the Ottoman advance, no thanks to Western Europe. Now we can finally stop worrying about getting conquered.
Western Europe: *shits itself in the Americas, cries in French Revolution*
    Eastern/Central Europe: “you good bro?”
    France: *shrieks in Napoleon*
Eastern/Central Europe: “oh god dammit can we just relax for a few more centuries”
Napoleon: *goes on vacation, comes back, goes on another vacation, dies*
Europe: *sighs in relief, relaxes just a bit*
Serbia: “haha Franz Ferdinand go bbrrrrrr”
Germany and Austria: *decide to kick Belgium’s ass in order to kick France’s ass because France doesn’t want Germany and Austria to kick Russia’s ass for trying to kick their asses for kicking Serbia’s ass, resulting in Britain coming in to try and kick Germany’s ass, but also the Ottomans’ ass, who joined the Central powers to expand but now Britain wants their land and Japan also joins in to gangbang Germany from behind in East Asia because it wants more islands than the island it already has and then Germany, starting to feel a bit overwhelmed, decides to do a Zimmerman Telegram and tells Mexico to invade the US to keep them occupied and out of the war which just brings the US into the war which just adds more weight on the Western front and at some point in all that the Russia Empire, the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire all collapse because its a really bad time to be an Empire if you aren’t Britain or Japan, and then Germany gets cucked by Britain and France for twenty years.*
Europe: *exhausted, confused sigh* “I’m getting real tired of this war thing, that last one was so big and stupid it will probably be the War that Ends all Wars. Good thing the Economy is good in the Wes- oh shit now we’re in a Depression, thanks US stock market.”
Germany: *still upset over getting cucked by Britain and France and depressed about the Depression, elects angry mustache man who promptly throws a giant temper tantrum*
Italy and Japan: *join in to use Germany’s temper tantrum as an opportunity to expand*
Europe: *gets fucked up by Germany’s giant temper tantrum*
    USA: “not my problem”
Japan: *decides to pull a Zimmerman Telegram and yeet some planes planes at US to keep them weakened and out of the war, which just brings the US into the war*
USA: “now it’s my problem” *does a D-Day in Western Europe while Russia slaps Germany out of Eastern Europe with its massive Commie dick because it figured out that it has more expendable peasants than Germany has bullets. Angry mustache man ragequits the lobby and then the US yeets a couple of death balls at Japan. And also Italy... probably maybe did something somewhere and then stopped doing that and switched sides because doing stuff is too difficult.*
The world: “I’m getting real tired of this war thing again, now we can relax finally”
The USA and USSR: *spend the next 50 years threatening to yeet death balls at each other and get into a contest to see how many death balls they can collect and how many allies they can get, until the USSR decides to relax a little bit and then accidentally falls apart*
The world: “that’s a relief, now we can finally rela- oh god dammit did someone just yeet planes at the US again?!”
The USA: *Never Forgets, goes to Middle East for a short little visit, ends up staying for 20 years*
China: *decides to replace USSR as the new supervillain for the upcoming Earth Cinematic Universe movie, gets even more passive aggressive and secretive, accidentally stumbles onto a virus that doesn’t exist until it does and then it’s not that bad until it is and then it won’t spread outside China until it does and then it will go away in warm weather until it doesn’t*
And now I’m locked in my house bored writing this comment wondering why I’m doing this and it even started and how long I’ve been typing it and whether I should stop procrastinating and do my online homework. This has been a shitty 800 year explanation for why I’m typing this, here have a sticker, now go away.

Wild to think that the Roman Empire fell in 1453, and less than 50 years later, the Americas were discovered, which meant that there were still romans alive when the new world was discovered.

You should do an episode about sailing. It was the primary means of traveling long distances as well as for trade, for hundreds for years. It would be interesting to learn about professional sailors. What was life at sea like, how did they passed the time and keep a high moral.

Maybe I missed it but if I didn’t, you forgot the most important thing. The fall of Constantinople is considered the end of the medieval period. The city's fall also stood as a turning point in military history. Since ancient times, cities and castles had depended upon ramparts and walls to repel invaders. The Walls of Constantinople, especially the Theodosian Walls, were some of the most advanced defensive systems in the world at the time. These fortifications were overcome with the use of gunpowder, specifically in the form of large cannons and bombards, heralding a change in siege warfare. Countries understood with fear walls won’t protect them. That is the most important result of the fall.

The Age of Exploration started already before the fall of Constantinople and was partially to find an alternative way to get spices from India and the spice trade was controlled by the Mamluks and Venice, which happened almost exclusively via naval trade while the ottomans mostly controlled the land trade via the silk road
