While I completely agree with your take on Token's early career (Even Token agrees with this assessment), I do think you guys are really doing him a disservice by not covering, or, at the very least, mentioning his massive growth as an artist over the last few years. He has really come into his own unique, chill, and laid back yet technical style. He has gone on record stating that he has deliberately put in a lot of effort over the last few years to really separate himself from the "lyrical miracle" type of rap style, as well as disassociate himself from that sort of fanbase. I was never a fan or listener of token (mostly because I thought he sounded corny af), but his last project really caught my attention. His track "Amsterdam" with Benny the Butcher really caught my attention, as it demonstrated a ton of improvement/ growth as an artist, and his new flow really sounded smooth and buttery af on that track. Of course, there's still quite a few things he needs to work on in order to help develop past that sort of style, but imo he's actually a great example of an artist actively working to grow past/distance themselves from the corny/cringe "lyrical miracle" style/fanbase in a positive manner.
You're completely right. I'm not even a Token fan but it's clear from multiple videos that someone at this channel just personally dislikes him/his music and they go out of their way to paint him in a light that just isn't honest. From what I've seen he's pretty self aware, actually cares about the art form and history of Hip Hop, and has steadily progressed as a rapper and artist in general. They do a similar thing to Cordae and that bothers me far more. Has he made a classic album yet, no. But does that mean he's not talented or hasn't made great music? Obviously not! But for some reason they act like he's a blatant J Cole clone when nothing could be further from the truth. Guys like him are the future of Hip Hop. This channel needs more objectivity or they're running the risk of ruining the reputation they've built.
@jbmp1390 I've been listening to Token sense high school and ya he's definitely grown a lot as an artist. He's greatly expanded the range of sounds he can tap into, and his pen game has consistently improved over the years. He does drop some singles that I'll find a little eh, but he also drops some real bangers. And ya his last album was rly fucking good, definitely a big step forward for him. Really shifts the tone from what ppl think his shit sounds like. I've noticed these guys sly Token a lot, idk what thier deal is with him. Same with NF. I get theres an obvious similarity in style. But with him too, with his latest project I think his penmanship showed serious growth and rly made his own imprint on the style. Maybe they just think the audience will respond well if they rag on artists that public image feels to 2017"gerrr mumble raps not real rap this is real rap".
Nah token is crap now. He was good in his happiness and exception days heck even new problems. Then he got a feature from tech and didn't even make something worth putting on repeat.

I feel like NF was influenced by Eminem but he has his own sound and style of music. He covers different subject matter, with different flows and completely different bars.
if you listen to NF's whole discography, you can really see that he's slowly creating his own path. in his earlier music, he sounded almost exactly like EM. now he's at the point where he's so close to his own style, and he just needs to take that extra step. hopefully with this next album he's about to release we can see him take that step.
It’s actually incredibly hard to be unique and successful in anything. Because everything’s pretty much been done. When it comes to creative industry’s like music, film, fashion, etc most things are created with influence from people previous to them. I wouldn’t call that copying
That's what people who aren't creative says. Wth are u talking about? Music has been around for CENTURIES. There's never been a end or a lack of originality when your great at what u do. U must be young.
@@jmar5127 What he is saying is that everything has been done at least once. Write an amazing book and now choose the title, make the hook to a song, create your own beat. You will probably have some originality to it, but if you are good at what you do, there will be traces of other great artists no matter what. Someone somewhere else is thinking the exact same shit I'm typing right now. Doesn't make us any less original.
It takes time to piece together a style and make it fit somewhat with what's current. But all the originals figured it out so no pass for that.. I think it's because of the way the internet consumes music. You got under developed artists putting out songs that go viral overnight and ppl are reaching the masses before they fully develop their own voice.
Honestly as someone who has done a deep dive into NFs music it’s actually quite good and I think most people just calling him an “Eminem clone” haven’t fully realized the talent he has of his own
Im not gonna lie, token definitely used to have a lot of similarities with em. But his new work with this last year or 2 is great. He is definitely coming into his own sound.
NF has songs that are personal and has definitely come out to be his own rapper with his own style. The dude is talented regardless of how much Eminem affected him. Plus he doesn’t even cus which is the polar opposite of Eminem.
Cordae is kinda nice with it though. Him and Wayne have a pretty sick track together. Also the SUPERB IRONY of saying people sound like Drake is peak hilarity.
The industry push behind Jack Harlow was ridiculous. Sad thing is labels are way more willing to put money behind basic white rappers just because of the demographics the can get to
Not a fan of jack Harlow but I also don't think it's got anything to do with him being white. He's more on the pop side of things and that's what sells him.
The only thing Logic has blatantly copied from Kendrick is the “you” adlibs besides that he’s taken a lot of inspiration from stuff Kendrick’s done and has made it his own I’d say, you can see where Kendrick influenced him but where he influenced him doesn’t feel cheaply added to the music he builds on it with what he wants to say or whatever he wants to do for that specific song
@@filmneuro Logic said it himself but it gets corny when people get mad at Logic for sampling something Kendrick has also sampled keep that same energy with every rapper.
Every white rapper who is remotely lyrical automatically gets compared to Eminem even if they sound nothing alike or even rap about the same things. "You are white, and lyrical. So you are Eminem".
I love how Token, Hopsin, Dax, and NF don't care about being a "clone". They just enjoy making music the way their favorite artist did. They know they're not mainstream and they seem to like staying "underground". In my opionion, they get thrown the most shade.Just let 'em be, you don't have to listen to them if you don't want to, but you shouldn't just hate them for being "carbon copies"
@@sebmcchicken3528 not stealing. But just opting to create music that same style that works without putting their own influence and creativity on it. A lot of artists do it because it seems like the safest route to take. That's what makes Sada Baby so different. He mixes it up. Will make a trap record, a party record, mix up his flow, take off his shirt and dance etc...
This is something I feel a lot of aspiring artist fear of. I, myself, love this music genre, however, I know if I was to ever put out music, I'd end up being told I'm trying to sound like various rappers. It's deemed to happy to everyone.
Boy, I tell you something. They better be glad that this isn’t the 1990’s. I mean if this was going on during that time, must of these copy and paste rappers would’ve had their ass kicked
nah not really. The 90's if anything was worst about this. There was no room for deviating from what the radio wanted to play. They copied each other a ton or were forced to by labels. The internet has given us way more diversity.
This also happens with some underground rappers a lot of them have the same flow different lyrics which doesn’t make them stand out it just sounds like they’re talking over a beat or listening to someone trying to be exactly like who they’re influenced by instead of being unique
I have never listened to Post Malone and thought “sounds like Future”… Post Malone was immediately a brand new sound to me and I listen(ed) to A LOT of trap/hiphop before and after Post Malones entrance into the scene. Plus, I never heard Kid Laroi as a Juice Wrld sound, I immediately thought “this kid is directly taking his sound from Post Malone..” I cant be the only one who thinks that.
Post malone has always had his own style to me … never copied definitely don’t see any comparison to future he’s literally a rockstar and pop rapper along with some vibes of rnb and rap
feel like artist that have simlar flows is bound to happen regardless eventually in not just hip hop but any genre but compared to stealing lyrics from other artist, this aint the worse crime a rapper can commit. Great video tho man ^^
NF has his own way. Yes he might rap angrily and fast, but his songs have meaning sometimes, some have emotion and low toned, his beat selection is insanely different. Dude literally puts you in a movie. His bars are nasty and clever too. A dozen of his songs are exposing himself and are about mental health. I can see though why people call him a clone and make comparisons, but I think he’s different enough that he doesn’t get that title of being an “Eminem clone.” He probably does use a few things Eminem does, but he doesn’t completely copy him.
We're at the point that any successful artist inadvertently makes their own genre with the sheer amount of artists they inspire and the endless void of "type beats" that are not only on RUclips but production sites like Beatstars. Everyone wants to be an artist and if you want to be they do what they know will sell. When an artist does good (example: Playboi Carti). They bring with them artists that are derivatives of them (Yeat, Ken Carson, etc)
NF and Eminem don’t dress alike, they rap about completely different things and NF has gotten better at rapping and created his own beats, flow switches, cadences and so much more. He’s completely separated himself from him.
@@GaTech379 another thing I think separates them. Is subjects they talk about. Eminem has talked about drugs and murder and all this stuff (not saying that’s bad, he has iconic songs about it.) while NF raps about God, his trauma, his burdens insecurities and so much more while not cussing. I think NF is one of the best and most underrated rappers today.
Interesting video... although there's a ton of room for nuance in this discussion. I feel like the best / most unique artists just pull from a lot more inspirations and combine them altogether... ex Kendrick in GKMC pulls a ton from Bone Thugs and OutKast but makes it his own, but nobody ever really seems to talk about this.

Don't confuse influence with imitating...

Nah bro logic himself is for sure inspired by Kendrick. Especially earlier material. However, he has created his own path as of late.
But Kendrick is organic and original while logic …
The only thing Logic has blatantly copied from Kendrick is the “you” adlibs besides that he’s taken a lot of inspiration from stuff Kendrick’s done and has made it his own I’d say, you can see where Kendrick influenced him but where he influenced him doesn’t feel cheaply added to the music he builds on it with what he wants to say or whatever he wants to do for that specific song

I agree. He's a very reflective rapper and isn't scared to share his story even with criticism. I love that about him
We're at the point that any successful artist inadvertently makes their own genre with the sheer amount of artists they inspire and the endless void of "type beats" that are not only on RUclips but production sites like Beatstars. Everyone wants to be an artist and if you want to be they do what they know will sell. When an artist does good (example: Playboi Carti). They bring with them artists that are derivatives of them (Yeat, Ken Carson, etc)
