It's so reassuring to see a professional, highly skilled quilter make a mistake. I laughed so loud the dogs were startled. Thank you Leah for another fantastic video. Off to order the templates now.
What an amazing tutorial this was! I just love Dresden Plate blocks and have wanted to try it but wasn't sure how to address some of the issues you did here. My two favorite parts were: you included the "error" of ironing the sticky material on the incorrect side, which is the best way for us to learn from that mistake (which we have all made); and, showing us what all the various combinations look like at the end. I know that took you a lot of time and I really appreciate it. Thank you, Leah! You're the best.
You're super welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed this video even with the mistake. Lol - that was actually kinda lucky because the fabric looked good enough on both sides. Some fabrics I wouldn't have been able to get away with it. I'm so glad you found this helpful!
Thank you, Leah. So very clever and so beautiful. I want to just dive right in and Dresden away!! You're such a great instructor and the best at explaining ..
You know what is nice too Leah? When you turn the blade around and make a nice end as well. You then don't need the middle bit and can do some lovely patterns
Great video. I really liked the variety of plates you showed at the end. I tried to order the templates, but they're available only in the US. Perhaps you could also have a digital version that international customers could use, and we could create our own templates. Just a friendly suggestion.
We do have a digital version of the templates included with a past quilt along. leahday.com/products/flower-festival-sampler-quilt You can find them included with the even numbered quilt blocks.
Hey Leah! I loved how u mixed and matched the pointed and curved dresden blades to create interesting blocks. Will you be doing a follow up on quilting these? Would love to see/hear your thought process on how you would quilt them.
Sure! If you want to see it, I will happily quilt them in videos. I have lots of fun ideas for the funky plates and now that we have so many of them, I guess I should make a plan for how to use them all in some projects!
Just something to share, I would do the curved Dresden cut Un the bias of the fabric so that the fold will be easier and smoother. Thanks for all tour wonderful videos Leah!
Hooray! I have a 10" temp and a 10" die to make these but unwanted round tops too just didn't know how to make sure I was cutting a proper top. I'm thinking you could use a compass to draw the top on the template? I don't have anything to copy. Thanks so much for these. I made a big puff w Halloween fabric a few yrs ago and loved it so much I just keep it under my sewing table to rest my feet on.😁 Think I'll make some jumbled Dresdens on table runner this year. Just love the way you teach.
Dagnabbit! Now I want to make a Dresden plate quilt. Like right, now. Lol But, I'm in the middle of making Christmas gifts. What to do, what to do??? It's like having ADD. Oh, look! Shinny things! Lol But, seriously, great tutorial, Leah. Thank you!
Do you mean the edges of the Dresden plates, or the edges of the squares they are stitched to? If it's the Dresden plates (curved or straight edges) then I would hand stitch them down or maybe blanket stitch with a sewing machine. If they are very thin or very tattered, consider reinforcing them with plain fabric behind or stabilizer.
Thank you for quick response. All your suggestions make a lot of sense - as it is the edges of the plates that I am working on. Your tutorial is so good that if I survive this vintage quilt finish I will work with your 'how-to' methods.
Just remember that finished is better than perfect. Especially for a vintage finish. You're saving it from the trash can so anything you do is awesome!
couldn't you put fusible Web on both edges so you can still alternate your cut direction? Would Web on the small end hurt anything? Hey, just like Bob Ross the painter.....it wasn't a mistake, it was a "Happy Accident". Thanks for the grrrrrrreat video!
Yes, the more I played with these Dresden Plate quilt blocks, the more variations I came up with. With fusible web on both edges, you have a lot more possibilities with fusible edges. You can even cut the smaller edge with a curve or point to change up the inside finish as well.
LOL! Yep, I make a lot of mistakes, but generally edit them out of my videos. This time I was caught off guard and noticed only after cutting that I'd fused that fabric incorrectly. Oh well! As for making them into a quilt, check out this video on piecing a Pointy Petal Dresden Plate. I also cover how to stitch it down to the background fabric too: freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2017/02/how-to-piece-pointy-eight-petal-dresden.html
You could make 2 matching Dresden plates and sew them together to make a pillow. With the straight edge templates (1, 3, and 5) you could sew them together as 8, 12, and 16 sided polygons and then figure out the shape to fill in between... that would be pretty interesting! It's honestly most common to treat these like applique and stitch them to a background of some sort.

Awesome! Dresden plates are so much fun and I'm glad to help you finish your project!
Love all the different edge ideas😊, how about a follow-up on different ideas for the centre?

LOL! That's the wonderful thing about quilting - so many quilts to create! You'll never run out of shiny things to catch your eye!
It's very encouraging to see everyone can make a mistake! 8-)))
Yes! I make mistakes all the time!
I am hoping you can make a triple Dresden Plate how to video.
great video - how would you go about handling the edges of vintage dresden plates that have already been sewn together? Help I'm in over my head Beth

encouraging way to approach the task at hand - as I have committed to completing 3 quilts using "Grandma Kaufmann's" dresden plates.
Thanks again.

How do you make these into a quilt?
I LOVE that you shared your mistake! I make so many. :(

For the 12" fan piece, which template did you use
Can you let me know the exact time I showed the piece you're interested in?
Love the variety, Leah. Are you going to use all your samples together in one quilt? I'm considering purchasing your templates. Waiting for pay day.🤑
That's a great idea! I'm wanting to mix a few together and quilt them in different ways. I'll be sure to share videos on how it works!
WHAT SIZE WAS THESE
You can make a variety of sizes with my templates - from 11 inches, which fit nice on a 12 inch square down to around 4 inches.
Beautiful!
lol yayyyyyyyyy no one is perfect! great tutorial....glad you left your "error" in the video....awesome....we have all done this lol
No, I'm definitely not perfect! I'm so happy you liked this video!
Very nice! Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
What can u do with the back side? If you don't sew it down to a square.
You could make 2 matching Dresden plates and sew them together to make a pillow. With the straight edge templates (1, 3, and 5) you could sew them together as 8, 12, and 16 sided polygons and then figure out the shape to fill in between... that would be pretty interesting!

As soon as this cold quits kicking me...ugh..
