Maud Lewis ~~ Thank you adorableness... P.S. Have you ever done paintings of your hair? You know how Dali used to only paint the back of his wife's head? Just curious because it's such a spiritual part of you & I hope you never cut it ... Blessings everyday...😊
Enjoyed that... thanks... will try and source the books on Peggy Roberts and Charles Reid.. they were my faves... also love the story of Maude.. and her art... PS... love your colourful art too.. very inspirational... keep on keeping on.. cheers..😊😊🤗
P K Robert’s Book👍 …you’ve really helped me, thanks. Love all the information & demos. Would always appreciate design advice. Your paintings totally ROCK.
I loved the S Wimperis and C. Reid books. The video was very enjoyable. Thank you! I just subscribed. You are very enthusiastic and inspiring and like a ray of sunshine. Have a great Sunday.
Dear Sandi Thank you for sharing your favorite art books. Loved to see this video! Thought you might like one of my favorite books aswell: Xenia Hausner "You & I" Editor is "Prestel".
I have looked at that Maud Lewis book online. I live on the Canadian border and am a rug hooker. She has inspired many especially in the Canadian Maritimes.Canada has even used her images on postal stamps.....This may be the day to buy that if I can find it, A Valentine present to myself! LOL.... PS..... I love your videos. Keep going.....XO
Hello from Australia. I thought this video was great. I will check out Charles Reid's books. I'm just getting into watercolour & I will check out my local second hand shops for inspiration books. What a good idea you gave with the birds & perennials reference books you showed in this video.
Thank you! Enjoyed. Peggy Crow all the way! Charles Reid has always been a favourite of mine for watercolour! Love Mauds sweet story. I'm from Ontario, Canada and I've always known her style since I was a little girl. Always loved folk art back then for the simplistic style that I would try to copy but with my own twist! The little girl artist! She lives on...
Love all of these!! I've made a list. Have to chose Maude Lewis. There is a really cool gallery in my city in south Carolina. She has a lot of local artists. Check her website sometime. Mary Praytor main Street Greenville sc. She sells Ernest Lee's work. I have 3 of his pieces. He is a folk artist very eccentric and has been featured in Southern living. Famously called the chicken man. Started selling out of his van and if you could find him you could buy some of his work! A couple galleries finally convinced him to let them sell some pieces. Justice Littlejohn and Blue sky are also from south carolina.
This is a beautiful collection of art books ! I always watch your video when it pops up on Friday but I’m in bed so I always forget to leave a comment :/
oh wow never heard of maud lewis until now and i am definitely looking her up! i always appreciate the simplistic, naive paintings with solid blocks of color. i wonder what is considered “folk art”? anw you got yourself a new subscriber!
Love the Mary Fedden from last weeks video. I hadn’t heard of her before and I love her style 🥰! My favourite video however, is ‘How to loosen up your art’ I have that on repeat! 😉 ruclips.net/video/qC9aUqAGUnE/видео.html
I like the perennials book. I like coloring flowers and animals and Christmas in coloring books. I know very little about flowers so i am happy when I can find them in the 2 flower books i do have. I think you have definitely encouraged me to keep an eye out for reference books.
Love seeing your reference books! I love books! Lillian Potter biography sounds touching! Looking forward to reading her book! Maud Lewis and Fairfield Porter looked like excellent books, also. Thank you for sharing!❤
I'm not even a painter but I have gotten a lot of the books you love. Right now I am cutting up the pictures in my large size reference books to make collages...
Ahh of course I am already subscribed but will try and remember to hit the like button each time too! I hope you reach your subscriber goal! I have been stuck on the same number for over a year and it has been going down since I started doing studio vlogs! Oops! Haha oh well. I'm trying not to get disheartened though, I actually love making videos but I absolutely know how much hard work goes into them! Hours! Loved looking through your books, I use books to reference all the time. I am obsessed with children's picture books and here in Japan there are sooooo many amazing ones in very interesting styles, not always apparently child-friendly (I mean, the art style, sometimes very abstract, or loose, that childlike style which is actually hard to do, I know of a few artists I bet you would love). I also managed to get hold of an English language book on Grandma Moses who I know nothing about but I enjoy folk art styles so much, so I am looking forward to reading that! Thanks as always for another lovely video!
ooooh i adore Mary feddon and David hockney you are my hero, I've not long found you and some of your work reminds me of Mary Feddon Thank you for sharing, I love your work!
Have you heard of Nell Blaine? Years ago I bought a book on her and her art which I think you would also like since you love Alice Mumford. Check her out! I’m totally inspired by these books that you love! Thank you for sharing! I know this is a ton of work to create these wonderful videos! Many thanks!💖
I enjoyed this video and many others. Mahali for the inspiration! ❤ Also I'd be interested in the drawing heads book personally. I miss having a library since I've moved to a very humid place, so this video helped me live vicariously through you. :)
Watching this video of your favorite artists that inspire you, makes me wonder when my favorite artist, who inspires me, will publish her book....I know it would be a huge job......but I would love a book of your paintings to curl up with..........
Really enjoyed this video. It was interesting to hear about your 'go to' weeks. When I found out about Maud Lewis, I did the same thing and read and viewed all I could find. What an amazing woman. I am a 'colorist,'' and love pastels --- my favorite art books are by Wolf Kahn and books about Pierre Bonnard, but it's hard to narrow the books down. I LOVE David Hockney - his pools, his dachshunds, his polaroids. Just fyi ...I've checked out some other channels speaking about 'art books' and was surprised to see that for most, they were collecting Disney/cartoon type books. I had never considered them art books, but obviously many do! x
Could you please tell me the name of the Lilias Trotter biography you read? Have just found your You Tube channel and it is very inspiring. Thank you. By the way, I have located the book about Maud Lewis and it is much cheaper now, in paperback. One of my favourite Australian books is, 'Olive Pink: artist, activist & gardener: a life in flowers' by Gillian Ward. Olive Pink was born in 1884 and spent some time in the central desert areas of Australia, painting flowers. Her paintings are loose and done out in the environment, where she stepped off the train somewhere between Adelaide and Alice Springs. I think these books about inspiring ladies such as Maud, Lilias and Olive, should be in every school library. Self belief is very important. I can't wait to read about Maud Lewis and Lilias Trotter. Thank you from Australia.
Sandi, I love your videos they're so informative and it's just so great to "visit" with another artist. But, could you choose another word to call all of us out in video land besides "guys" I cringe every time it is said. Gals, ladies, or artists could be other choices. Don't mean to be terribly critical at all but to me, guys means men. Not to say you're not speaking to men, but I would think it's mostly women.
Thank you Sandi for these recommendations. I found a bundle with two Lilias Trotter books on her site for 25 bucks with free shipping. I had never heard of her and I'm excited to learn more about her. I will recommend a book by Henry Issacs called Travel Notes.
You’re so welcome Dana and that’s a great deal you got 🤗! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have! And thank you for the recommendation- can’t wait to look it up!
@@sandihester yay! Also, I just got a book on artist Nell Blaine by Martica Sawin. It's gorgeous. I think you'd enjoy it. I had never heard of her until recently.
can never have too many art books 😀 that Sarah Wimperis looks gorgeous! creating def helps with dealing with pain from the MS, its a great free distraction having a bird ref book is a must for me, helps in identification and drawing
I've been following you for several months. I love that you love Jesus! I could see Jesus in you from the first time I watched you on RUclips. Thank you for sharing your gifts ( art and your infectious, joyful personality) with us. I'm 62 years old and I've always loved art. Most of my life has been spent working full time as a teacher and raising my family. I'm still teaching and caring for my familly, but in the last year I know God has been calling me to be more serious about learning to paint. I've been taking one on one art lessons from an amazing teacher and I try never to miss one of your videos. Thanks again, Sandi! You're so gifted and so much fun!
Molly, what a great comment to get first thing this morning! That really blesses me that you could see Jesus in me from the first time 😭. I love that you’re jumping back into art later in life - it’s NOT too late - enjoy it Molly!
Love this! I'm a huge fan of Maud Lewis' artwork and recently purchased a book called Capturing Joy: The Story of Maud Lewis. It's actually a children's book but if anyone is interested in seeing her amazing artwork, it's very affordable and chock full of wonderful pieces. Also, highly recommend Maria Sibylla Merian if anyone is looking for floral inspiration, she was an artist/scientist in the 1600's and her stuff is incredible. It is highly detailed, which isn't my jam but such beautiful work, very inspiring as well. And Charles Reed! Wow. Been watching your video catalog and can't thank you enough, I know it's a ton of work but you are appreciated!
OH!!!!! Loved this video! The books I LOVED the most were "A Blossom in the Desert", I, too am a Born-again Christian, and love to hear about missionary work AND artist's testimonies all wrapped up in one! praise Jesus! -- and Peggi Kroll Roberts- painting loosely is so inspiring to me! I need more of that! and the third one that speaks to me is Maud Lewis's book (I saw the movie of her life a few years ago! Fascinating! - and would totally purchase both of these books- I also buy thrift store books and, in our community, we have a place by the hardware store where people leave their magazines that they don't want anymore- and you can take them, trade them, etc. I choose the ones that stand out to me- animals and people and landscapes, etc. So inspiring as well. :) Thanks for all you are doing! YOU are so very Inspiring!
Loved the Maud Lewis pieces. I made a note to look her up. By the way, I wasn't sure I would like your channel, but am now hooked. I enjoy your hopeful, silly, careless (but not careless, just not concerned with opinions) approach to painting.
Hi Sandi! Alway ask people to subscribe and like the video at the beginning, I can’t believe you don’t have more views and followers, your videos are great!!
What a wonderful eye opener! I have never really looked at art books before but your video on loose painting in which you referenced that chaps book keeps coming to mind when I look at views/people. As a child I would rip up most of my art work because it wasn't perfect to me. Your approach has really inspired me and I have asked for some art supplies for my birthday this week. Thank you so much for sharing.
As a graphic designer that never considered herself a "real artist" you have changed and inspired me. Ive been painting again! thanks isn't a strong enough word! Your vlogs are so inspiring thank you for being you and giving a 30 year old back her passion.
My dad use to travel once a month for his job and go by the spot where Maude Lewis stood selling on the side of the road. He’d stop and give her money for a painting but he wouldn’t take the paint because he said ......” it looks like a two year old painted it” but he felt sorry for her. I’m like what!!!!!! thanks dad I could have had lots of original paintings. 😩
As much as I enjoy your videos, Sandi, I'm a little saddened that we take up so much of your time. If I could package up some extra Time and send it to you to use on your art, I so would. Your work is delightful and inspiring - unique to you and unique in how it conveys a sense of life, an energy and vision. I wish it didn't have to compete with us.
Much love for introducing me to Lilias Trotter - have purchased her biography for my mother's birthday and already can't wait for her to finish it 😉 Just purchased a couple of David Hockney books for myself after watching your last video but I will keep all these artists in mind for my next splurge! Also your enthusiasm really is beautiful and so so infectious - always leave your videos feeling inspired and motivated but also very calm and okay just being (and seeing so much beauty). Thank you ❤ !!!!
@@sandihester it’s a beautiful movie. I’ve seen it multiple times, I can’t get enough of it. 🙂 It was actually filmed in the province I live….about 30 mins away.
I enjoyed this video so much. You've introduced me to artists that I had not heard of and now I look forward to learning more about them. The book about Lilias Trotter is the one that I will look for and purchase. I am always inspired by memoirs/biographies of the artist and their work. Thank you for taking the time to share this. I look forward to your videos every week.
That Maud Lewis book looks really good, her story sounds really beautiful, I need tp learn more about her. Thank you for sharing these📚And you didn’t ask, but I’ll tell ya: my favorite thing about shopping for art / reference / inspiration books is that as an artist, I can make it tax write off!😂🥳
Sandi I just love you 😘 I am only on book number one , PEGGY and I am already in there knowing I’m gonna want all your books…….. ⭐️ that picture of the lady in the garden and the picture of her with her friend….. it made me get emotional … pure genius inspiration of work! That you see and I can see too.. I JUST LOVE WATCHING YOU AND WHAT YOU BRING IN YOUR VIDEOS! You are a blessing to have found 🌹🍎💕❤️ xxx LY
This is amazing Sandi! But I can't find the list of books?! I'm not great with technology...stupid!! Lol I just can't figure things that everyone else gets!! I used to paint in hyperrealism but now I do abstract and I find it much more freeing. I have a hard time with being motivated though cuz I'm disabled and I can't make art without my Mom's help. She's 82 and she's a beautiful little woman and she sets up everything and I do the art. There are a lot of days when I'm too ill to paint or draw so we'll have to try on a different day. I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for my Mom cuz she's saved my life so many times! I love her dearly and I'm so blessed to have her in my life. Thanks Sandi, you're the best! Take care!
Thank you for this video, like I said before I feel like Im learning sooo much from you!!!! My favorite book from today might be Maude Lewis. The art and then they story about her I love.
I love watching you all the way from the UK x you’ve kept me company as I’ve had Covid x you have inspired me and cheered me up so so much x you are such wonderful company! Can’t wait to get my energy back to get my paints out x loved these book but I’m on an art supply and book ban but no harm keeping a wish list! I love love your videos ❤️ xx
Loved the books you reviewed, must now go searching for the Lillian trotter book, a blossom in the desert. What a discovery, loved her biography story, what a woman, thanks Sandi xx
Thanks so much for the leaf thru. There are no physical book stores in my area any longer. I miss sitting down and leafing thru books to buy. Watching them I got inspired. I'd love to see more. Would you consider putting together one of your own? A book on the paintings on your website, put me on the list.
awesome love all your post so inspired with your work .Maud Lewis most defiantly i remember my art teach had a couple of prints around the studio class she would always walk by them and say breath relax draw what you see not what you think you see. lol thank you bringing that fond memory and lesson back.
My absolute favorite book was the art of Peggy Kroll Roberts. Her paintings just amaze me!! Also, my favorite videos to watch are your Paint with me or process videos 😍😍😍
I’m going to have to find your video that mentions that Hockney book! I have it and look at it often! He’s one of my all time favorite painters and have made treks just to see his shows several times. At some point I’ll make a list of some of his best books and videos. He is a true master!
Thanks for sharing all the books. My favorite is Peggy Kroll Roberts (must be out of print...I can't find...yet!) I'm so glad I discovered your channel --- you have imparted so much good info and direction. Now I'm going to practice more "Loose Painting"!!! Look forward to your next RUclips!!
Art books are the stuff of dreams. Oceans, deserts, angels, forests, still life, flowers and people -- the images stay with you long after you close the book. Sci Fi art books are even better. These are my 2 favorite art books on Amazon: - Aviation Art by Lou Drendel - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
Thank you Sandi, being in Australia I hadn’t come across any of these books. They all look amazing. This is my current favourite A Painted Landscape: Across Australia from Bush to Coast.
oh my word, I love the books. I especially felt so connected to the Maude Lewis story and book. So, much in fact, I had to purchase it! Thank you so very much for all you do. Your sharing has directly impacted me and my work. I will say it as often as I can, you are a treasure!
Hi Sandi, nice books. Thanks for sharing. Especially the one about Maud. I watched the movie Maudie last year ( or the year before?? Ai Corona 😏) and she had such a tough life, but still managed to make beautiful art. A true inspiration. Have a great weekend!
Very inspiring! Thank you.
Thanks Sandi. I’ve ordered some of those.
Charles reid and the first book. I would buy them , thanks for your vlog!
Can I suggest Marsden Hartley, Max Beckmann and Philip Guston...?
Yes, yes and yes! Will definitely look them up - thank you!

Been watching your video catalog and can't thank you enough, I know it's a ton of work but you are appreciated!
Thank you for the kind words!
I like the folk art book.
Kelli, I’m so glad you enjoyed it ❤️❤️❤️
Loved the Maud Lewis pieces. I made a note to look her up. By the way, I wasn't sure I would like your channel, but am now hooked. I enjoy your hopeful, silly, careless (but not careless, just not concerned with opinions) approach to painting.
So glad you’re enjoying it!
Hi Sandi! Alway ask people to subscribe and like the video at the beginning, I can’t believe you don’t have more views and followers, your videos are great!!
Awe - thanks so much Caroline!
Awe - that's awesome - I hope you have fun with those are supplies - just enjoy creating. I'm glad you like the art books!
I missed u this week so i am watching old video for the hundreth time. Take care
Thank you Pamela!
As a graphic designer that never considered herself a "real artist" you have changed and inspired me. Ive been painting again! thanks isn't a strong enough word! Your vlogs are so inspiring thank you for being you and giving a 30 year old back her passion.
Nicole 😭😭😭 - not sure what to say but thank you for sharing this with me!!
WHAT!!!!!!! That’s an amazing story! But he made a big mistake! 😂
I appreciate your comment but I do LOVE making these videos - I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it! It inspires me and I love giving in this way.
She’s going to love it!!! Very thoughtful of you! Thank you for all you said - so encouraging ❤️❤️❤️
Love the book ideas. I'm sure you saw the movie Maude about Maud Lewis, so good! Thanks for another great video and inspiring me!
Yes, I saw the move and loved it! Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it Marci!!! The Lilias book is a gem and I’m so glad your drawn to it!
Sandi..!! Just made my Friday more happy..!!
Eeeeeee! So glad!
That Maud Lewis book looks really good, her story sounds really beautiful, I need tp learn more about her. Thank you for sharing these📚And you didn’t ask, but I’ll tell ya: my favorite thing about shopping for art / reference / inspiration books is that as an artist, I can make it tax write off!😂🥳
Un, yes and amen to that!
I love books! And I love to see your favorite art books! I think you should make more videos about your books. Loved this video!
I would if I had more books to share 😂
Sandi I just love you 😘 I am only on book number one , PEGGY and I am already in there knowing I’m gonna want all your books…….. ⭐️ that picture of the lady in the garden and the picture of her with her friend….. it made me get emotional … pure genius inspiration of work! That you see and I can see too.. I JUST LOVE WATCHING YOU AND WHAT YOU BRING IN YOUR VIDEOS! You are a blessing to have found 🌹🍎💕❤️ xxx LY
I know - Peggi is something else!!! Her work is really special! And THANK YOU for such a kind comment!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I enjoyed your video. I just got a wonderful book of John Singer Sargent portraits in charcoal. It is great.
Ohhhhhhh - that sound amazing!!!
I love love your videos ❤️ xx
thank you, sandi! just have to say, you're a favorite artist as well as utuber. your art is very inspiring to me, and your editing is the bomb!
Awe - thanks so much Jenny - I really appreciate that!!! All of it!
Sandi, hang on to your book A Blossom in the Desert,it’s out of print here in the UK,and only available used for over £100 !!!!!
Yikes!!!!! I’m sorry to hear that!
I do want to make a book sometime
awesome love all your post so inspired with your work .Maud Lewis most defiantly i remember my art teach had a couple of prints around the studio class she would always walk by them and say breath relax draw what you see not what you think you see. lol thank you bringing that fond memory and lesson back.
I loved reading your comment Monica! And I love that you have childhood memories of Maud’s work!!
My absolute favorite book was the art of Peggy Kroll Roberts. Her paintings just amaze me!!
Also, my favorite videos to watch are your Paint with me or process videos 😍😍😍
Awe - thank you!!!!!
I am not finding this book anywhere. Does anyone know the ISBN or know where to buy? Thanks.
I’m going to have to find your video that mentions that Hockney book! I have it and look at it often! He’s one of my all time favorite painters and have made treks just to see his shows several times. At some point I’ll make a list of some of his best books and videos. He is a true master!
Sarah Wimperis and Lilias Trotter -
I want those books. Thanks for all of your inspiring and encouraging videos!
Good ones! You’re welcome 🤗!
Yayyyy,my Mary Fedden book arrived today......soooo loving it ❤️😍😍
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Thanks for sharing all the books. My favorite is Peggy Kroll Roberts (must be out of print...I can't find...yet!) I'm so glad I discovered your channel --- you have imparted so much good info and direction. Now I'm going to practice more "Loose Painting"!!! Look forward to your next RUclips!!
Thanks so much Emmie. I’m sorry you can’t find Peggi’s book 😔
Art books are the stuff of dreams. Oceans, deserts, angels, forests, still life, flowers and people -- the images stay with you long after you close the book.
Sci Fi art books are even better.
These are my 2 favorite art books on Amazon:
- Aviation Art by Lou Drendel
- Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
Thanks Tim!
Thank you Sandi, being in Australia I hadn’t come across any of these books. They all look amazing. This is my current favourite A Painted Landscape: Across Australia from Bush to Coast.
Yes - I’ve wanted to get that book!!!!!!
Definitely would get that perennial flower book!
oh my word, I love the books. I especially felt so connected to the Maude Lewis story and book. So, much in fact, I had to purchase it! Thank you so very much for all you do. Your sharing has directly impacted me and my work. I will say it as often as I can, you are a treasure!
Oh man Heather - THANK YOU so much - you are so kind friend! Oh my, can't wait for you to get that Maude book - eeeeeeee! you're going to love it!
Hi Sandi, nice books. Thanks for sharing. Especially the one about Maud. I watched the movie Maudie last year ( or the year before?? Ai Corona 😏) and she had such a tough life, but still managed to make beautiful art. A true inspiration. Have a great weekend!
Thank you!
Something different and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Love love love art books. Thanks!
So glad you enjoyed it!!!
