    Sandy for the love of God this is torture. Please tell us you’re gonna go back and give us a very long sketchbook tour or even one sketch each video. You don’t have to do any editing we promise. We just want to have time to see each page and have a good look at it and hear what you have to say. You are an incredible artist.

    I love the Talens sketchbooks, and I just took Emma’s lead and chopped the 8.5 x 11” size down so it’s more square - I love it. I use the small 4” Talens book to keep track of my supplies. I have sections for paint, markers, pencils and neocolors. Whenever I buy a new supply I make a swatch in the little book; then when I go shopping (online or in the store), I have with me all the colors / materials I already own so that I don’t buy the same thing twice.

    Loved this and love the new series idea! I like the Stillman & Birn also as I prefer white paper to cream, but the Talens are so affordable and come in so many fun colors that I have several of those also. I go for a square format over a portrait or landscape--a holdover from my many years as a scrapbooker, I think. Dyan Reavely also has a line of ink sprays and paints with Ranger and she specifically developed the Dylusions journal with that paper so that it worked with her preferred supplies. She's an OG to us in the art journaling world!

    Sandi, you mentioned that you don't use watercolor paper or sketchbooks because you like smooth surfaces, not textured, so I just wanted to share with you, in case you don't already know, that hot press watercolor paper is smooth, cold press is textured. It won't pill, or ball up the way mixed media paper does. Worth a try, and watercolor paint behaves very differently on 100% cotton watercolor paper than it does on other surfaces. Really enjoyed seeing your sketchbooks in this video, thank you for sharing.

    The Hahnemuhle Nostalgie sketchbook (8,3 x11,7", 80 pages) is my favourite, 190gsm and the acid-free paper has the most beautifull natural white color I have ever seen. The grain is so fine that my color pencils and inks also look good on it. (It costs the equivalent of 21 USD over here. In the USA it's about 36 USD. I can imagine that's a disadvantage.)

  • @kr2112
    @kr2112 Год назад +1

    That was so good to see these, Sandi. Thank you. I am wondering if the Ranger one is not acid free. I can’t find acid free or archival in any of the literature I’ve been finding. I made a book for my nephew in a Moleskine (8 x 5?) I mostly loved working in it (I’ve long been a fan of Moleskine, but mostly for writing. However, they have changed the weight of the paper in their writing one so and not in a good way.) I did find it pilling if I worked watercolor too hard, but mostly it worked. I like that I can use watercolor markers and a waterbrush and almost never has any bleed through. I’m glad to hear your take on the Stillman and Birn. Recently you mentioned that white paper can be better with wc because it allows for brighter lights, but I too find it a little too stark and the porosity of the page isn’t my favorite. It’s like the weight of the page could be a good thing, but I like more of a hot press style paper. Thanks, again.

    • @lightwavz
      @lightwavz Год назад

      I had wondered the same. I think the rule of thumb is similar to cotton watercolor paper where if it doesn't state expressly cotton content or archival then it isn't. @@sandihester I had the same concern and actually wrote to Ranger awhile back. They said that it IS acid-free. I’m not completely convinced because the labels on the product itself and the information on product pages at retailers do not state that, and they always state it in one place or another, other than for non-acid-free items like newsprint or chipboard. But that is what they say.

It’s just weird that it isn’t labeled as such since the way we know most is acid-free is that it is labeled acid-free.

    I love journals that I bind with whatever suits my fancy at that time. My go to sketchbooks are the Talens Art Creations and a plain paper XL Moleskine soft cover. I like the Moleskine journal for common place journaling, planning, jotting notes down and sketching with light watercolor wash and gouache on it. I love the sweet, sweet crinkle it makes after the pages dry. I have finished 1 5.5x8.5 Talens journal and am currently working in a large 8.5x11.5, a 2nd 5.5x8.5, a small 5x5 i keep in my purse, and a 5.5x8.5 landscape journal. have a 2nd large sketchbook waiting for me to move into when I complete my large one. I love the paper in these journals and how well they take my Prismacolor Pencils as well as collage, gouache, and watersoluble media. I love the variety of colors these come in, the creamy paper, and I really love covering them with stickers I get from other favorite artists.

    Hi Sandi, the Ranger sketchbook is the brandname so that's correct - you might've heard of the mixed media artist Dyan Reveley has her own line of art supplies. Similar to Jane Davenport. I don't own any of her supplies yet but I have checked out those sketcbooks, I've been looking at the royal talens sketchbooks too! Thanks for sharing.

    I really like Moleskine sketchbooks a lot. I am also a big fan of the landscape format. I used one of the A5 watercolor landscape books at my beach trip in May and did two page spreads of the dunes and ocean view. Very pretty. Stillman and Birn are good, and lately I've been purchasing Hahnemuhle Nostalgie sketchbook, which have pretty sturdy paper.

    Thanks ugh! Now I just bought another sketchbook, the Ranger! haha I use talens. I used to hate it, but now I am finding because it is so cheap that I constantly go to it. It is not great for watercolor but I also add inktense pencils and markers. I have filled quit a few now and its my go to. Thank you so much for your recommendation a ways back. Can I get sponsored. haha I also like Stillman and Birns but not sure when to really use them. I have a nice Beta I took to mexico, have one in the car also maybe Zeta? They have thicker pages as you have said and I don't want to "waste" them so I constantly pick up a talens! Thank you always for your sharing and teaching!! Hug

Ive tried sitting on them b4 I work in them rubber bands and clips but they still do not seem to give me a flat enough surface. What are your tricks? Ty! sue

    Hehe Sandi changes her mind about liking a sketchbook while she's talking about it! I started using the Royal Talens sketchbooks 9 months ago and I love them! I have the 8x5, 12x12 cm and the A6 one (which is really helpful for carrying in a pocket). I also like the Daler Rowney Cachet mixed media sketchbooks. Unfortunately they don't do a square one any more so I've just started a landscape A5 one.

    Loved the video! I have tried all of them but the one from Ranger now. Lol. I was beginning to think I wanted white paper because of using watercolor. But now I'm getting out all the stuff again. Do you decorate the covers on purpose or does that just happen? Love it!

    • @sandihester
      @sandihester  Год назад

      It just happens because my hands are always messy. Sometimes if I have a glob of paint on my and instead of wiping it on my pants I’ll wipe it on the sketchbook so I guess that kind of ‘decorating’ it 🤷‍♀️😂

    Never too long!!! Like the series and I look forward to a gouache favs one, perhaps the pastel pencil, sharpener, paper, stuff. If I was to mention any journal, book, I would mention the Fabriano 1264 Mixed Media journal. It is, however, spiraled, but I like how it takes watercolor, pastel pencils, charcoal, but I don't really use colored pencils on it. Haven't tried my POSCAS on it, yet, either. I don't ever recall your using any spiral journals. I do like the Ranger journals. They are very nice. And I have purchased the Moleskin 12x16 after one of your videos. Love it!!! Especially for my acrylic paint work. It's lovely to work on. Thank you!! I have the smaller one, too. I really appreciate your suggestions!! Wonderful work.

    I really, really disliked the ranger for watercolor its rubbing of paper and messed with color and edges sucking up pigment like toiletpapier. Made me sooo angry. Talens is superior to it. Never buying it again. Looks pretty with sturdy pages but a big no from me and pretty pricey.
    And you cannot go crazy with lagering watercolor on a talens but for sketching and mixed media really good value for money.
    Bought a Zeta a week ago but I have to finish my other one first.....

    When I see your sketchbooks, I wonder what it would be like to be inside your head as you plan each project, the colors you decide on, and the subject matter. The variety is so lovely as you page through. I think a neat class would be to take us through a large variety of subjects and media just as you do in your sketchbooks! I would love to be next to you painting or drawing right along with each of the different subjects like landscape, coffee shop, animals, still life, like I just want to try it all but I experience so much resistance to using up my supplies.
    But yes I like the sketchbook journal company brand and moleskin mostly. But I plan to get some art creations and delusions sketchbooks for sure! Thank you for the great inspiration and humor that we all enjoy so much on Fridays! 🎉❤😊
