    The intro to this song was a real changing point, not only for The Beach Boys, but for rock music in general. This was the beginning of a new genre called Baroque Pop. Their Pet Sounds album released a few months later (and considered their masterpiece) was the first true Baroque Pop album, and has been considered one of the greatest albums of all time by many different music publications. Brian Wilson (orange and yellow striped shirt) is one of the all time best songwriters, a certified music genius. Unfortunately, within two years of this recording, his heavy experimenting in psychedelic drugs left him with serious mental damage that took him decades to recover from.

    • @alanmatthews9945
      @alanmatthews9945 2 года назад +5

      @@jarichards99utube Actually, LarryWT is absolutely correct. Brian Wilson went missing psychologically speaking after Pet Sounds. LSD and other drugs permanently affected him. His mental state and the extensive pressure eventually led to him abandoning his follow-up SMiLE project. He ballooned to over 300lbs and stayed in bed for years during the '70s.The person you're referring to, Dr Eugene Landy, was brought in to manage Brian's welfare during the '80s. He gradually took over Brian's life and became controlling to an extent where he wouldn't even let his family have visits. He was forced out of Brian's life eventually after years of legal wrangling. He most certainly was a bad 'un - however, despite his unorthodox methods he without doubt saved Brian's life.

      @Rose Madder Previosly, John had a friend playing guitar with the band. John was backstage & Mike Love asked who he was. He was on General Hospital at the time. Assistants & crew then chased him down & asked him to come on stage & play "Barbara Ann" with them. He had a BLAST!! So, when Kokomo came up years later John was still friends with the band & had occasionally gust appeared. He shot the video with them at the Florida Grand Hotel. It was a chance meeting at first, a friendship developed, and a fun dream for John to do it.

    I love The Beach Boys (and I married a California girl!).
    Hey Jay, nobody on RUclips is reacting to another band that was huge! The Bay City Rollers pretty much owned the charts in the mid-70s. The band from Scotland became so popular that the hysteria and pandemonium was similar to what happened with The Beatles (the media called it "Rollermania"). People were hurt in the crowds, and I think a couple of people even died. They even briefly had their own television show. Check out "Saturday Night," "Bye Bye Baby," "Let's Go," "Summerlove Sensation," "Rock 'n' Roll Love Letter," for starters. Fun music that's kind of been forgotten (the band's story didn't turn out happily).

    I had the biggest crush on Dennis Wilson (drummer). You can see how Brian Wilson (yellow striped shirt and white guitar) sings out of the side of his mouth. When he was young, his dad hit him in his ear and he went deaf in that ear. So he adapted to talk and sing out of the other side of his mouth so he could hear himself out of his other ear. 😞. 60’s music is so good! But it was more than just one group, who added to this. This was a time with loads of fabulous music. But it’s pretty obvious that the Beach Boys were light years in front of say Elvis, as much as I like him. Groups were pushing sounds as far as they could go, and it dates back, to the mid or late 1950’s when people like Joe Meek were bouncing sounds off the wall, too sound different.

      The Beatles were NOT making fun. Paul wrote Back In The USSR as a tribute to honor Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys. Mutual respect all the way around. Hearing the Rubber Soul album was such an inspiration to Brian Wilson, he Created the Pet Sounds album. And when the Beatles heard that, they set out to top it & came up with Sgt. Pepper. A very friendly, respectful, healthy, productive competition that the whole music-loving world benefited from.

    Well, I have to be honest with you - when this song was released, California was where it was at. I was there in the 50's and 60's, and it was just like Heaven, except you didn't have to die to go there. But.....it sure isn't like that now. Things change, you know?

    I bought the "Endless Summer", one of their many Greatest hits albums, on eight track tape when it same out around 1975. Wore it out. Re-purchased it on CD when it same out and has been mandatory every summer to this day. Saw them in concert in 1990 (Now we also have streaming!) Regards

    You need to play this one and then play the David Lee Roth version! Talk about times a changin! You’d get a kick out of it. DLR is quite the showman and he loves all females! You’d enjoy the side by side comparison.

    I know that you like groups with a good harmony; you should check out the 60's group called The Association. They had 5 or 6 hits in the late 60's.

    No, that's not the message of the song. He tells you about how each area has girls who are known for something special. All he wants is all these girls to be brought to California. Brian is not saying California Girls are the best. Played the flip, Let Him Run Wild".
