      Actually this is false “When asked about the song in 1990, Paul McCartney responded: "I thought it was a great record. It didn't quite have the emotional thing that Pet Sounds had for me. I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. It's that kind of an album for me."

    The Beach Boys originated in Hawthorne CA. They helped to create the “California/surf sound” in popular music in the 60’s. The members here are the iconic line up of the Wilson Brothers (Brian on bass with the high falsetto, Carl on guitar and Dennis on drums) with cousin Mike Love singing lead and Al Jardine on guitar. They were known for their awesome harmonies. Early songs are about 60’s California teen culture, such as surfing, cars and girls, but even though the topics were airy, the harmonies and production became more complex. As Brian’s ability to compose and produce music evolved, they became a major factor in the development of the concept album (see Pet Sounds), psychedelic and art rock and the use of studio techniques and modular recording (see Good Vibrations). Pet Sounds is consistently voted in the top 10 albums of all time and is supposed to have influenced the Beatles to record Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Paul McCartney has said that God Only Knows is his favorite song of all time, and Brian is widely considered to be a pop music genius. They also had a hit in the 80’s with a Caribbean influenced pop song, Kokomo, which was written for the movie Cocktail and recorded by most of the band. Mike Love still tours with a support band under The Beach Boys name, while Brian and Al tour separately with the Brian Wilson Band. Sadly, Dennis and Carl are no longer with us.

      There is an argument to be made, a good argument, that The Beach Boys are the most important American pop/rock group. I'm hard pressed to come up with another American group that can really put up a fight against them. I'm not counting solo artists like Elvis or Michael Jackson. If you're teaching a class about the history of American popular music, the one band/group you HAVE to include is The Beach Boys.

    One of the best American bands and their album Pet Sounds is on top of some lists for best ever. They managed to get a number 1 song 'I Get Around' in 1964 when Beatlemania was all the rage. My favorite was one of their earliest songs 'In my Room' a deeply personal song about a boy who fears the outside and feels safe and comfortable in his room.

  • @mikecaetano

    The Beach Boys scored a bunch of hits in the 60's besides "California Girls" -- from the surf rock of "Surfin' Safari", "Catch a Wave", and "Surfer Girl", to the hot-rod rock of "I Get Around", "Little Deuce Coupe", and "Fun, Fun, Fun", to the teenage love songs of "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Don't Worry Baby", and "Help Me, Rhonda", to their masterpiece "Good Vibrations" and more. Their surf and car tunes are sometimes mistaken for Jan & Dean -- "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)", "Dead Man's Curve", or the classic "Surf City".

    The Beatles were so impressed with this group and, in particular, this song that they tribute their song, 'Back in the USSR' to the Beach Boys as inspiration. And you definitely get that in some of the lyrics.

      At the time, Brian Wilson was practically obsessed with the Beatles, always striving to one-up them musically, which culminated in his production of the album Pet Sounds, which seldom fails to rank high on all-time best rock album lists even to this day.
      But Wilson finally gave up when one day he heard Strawberry Fields Forever on his car radio, which caused him to pull over in tears and say to himself, "They got there first"...

    Seen them at their 50th reunion. Minus Carl and Denny of course. I got to attend their sound check. The fellas were awesome. I use to live a few blocks from where their boyhood home was. Now there's a plaque in place. I'm a California/surfer "girl." Born one, will die one. Loved these guys since before i could talk. Need to check out out "I can hear music." I saw the BBs over the decades including the 60s. They were the best in the 60s in concert. The 50th reunion was a joke to me. Yes, they sounded good. However, all the BBs were doing was front a cover band that could reduplicate their sound. It should have been the BB Tribute Band tour featuring some of the originals

      I'm in the "middle" in the MidWest. I lived in those days. IMO the Four Seasons didn't come close to the Beach Boys. The Beatles respected the BBs, but didn't care for the 4 Seasons. I like the West Coast a lot better than the East Coast :-)

    The Beach Boys were part of the surf music scene in the 60's. They were known for their great harmonies and pleasant melodies. My favorite song by them is, "Wouldn't It Be Nice." It is in the movie, "50 First Dates", starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. It is a wonderful rom-com and their second movie together. The first was, "The Wedding Singer."
    An iconic song by The Beach Boys is, "Good Vibrations." It was even used as part of a Sunkist Orange Soda commercial. Am native Californian too. ✌❤🌹

    "Love and Mercy" Brian Wilson

  • @ProdigyBowlersTour
    @ProdigyBowlersTour 3 года назад +1

    First, they were from Southern California, and most of their earliest hits in the '60s were songs about surfing and cars and going to school. Eventually, they outgrew that and Brian Wilson, the brains behind the band, moved them toward more creative songs like "Good Vibrations," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and "God Only Knows," which is one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever listen to. What set The Beach Boys apart from most of the '60s bands was how so many of their songs were layered with deep harmonies, something the Wilson brothers (all of them in the band) had learned from their musically-oriented father from their childhood. By the way, while some of their early '60s songs are kind of frivolous (like "Be True to Your School"), some are a whole lot of fun, like, "Fun Fun Fun" and "Dance Dance Dance," which will absolutely make you want to get up and start dancing. While the American music scene was being dominated by the bands that came over from England during what came to be known as "the British Invasion" (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Dave Clark Five, the Kinks, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and so many others, the biggest AMERICAN groups were The Beach Boys and Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Then, of course, there was the awesome family of groups that came out of Detroit's R&B scene and Motown Records, like the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and so many others.
    You have much ground to cover when it comes to '60s music. You haven't even scratched the surface yet. And I promise you, you won't find better music in any decade.
    By the way, for an off-the-reservation good time, check out another R&B artist (a one-hit wonder at that) named Little Eva with her "Locomotion" and Fontella Bass doing "Rescue Me." More fun than a box of puppies! :-)

    I saw them live in 2014 at my home town's 200 year celebration. It was a free concert held at the town square. They kicked ass in their 50th year performing. I envy the people that got to see them 40 and 50 years ago in heir youth. The energy of their concerts had to be next level in the 1960's.

  • @alexfletcher5192
    @alexfletcher5192 3 года назад +2

    I also wonder if The Beach Boys (particularly with the songwriting genius of bassist Brian Wilson) is the reason the musical centre of gravity in American pop switched from east coast to west coast. Kind of ironic that the defining concert statement of the late 1960s (Woodstock) was therefore conducted from upstate New York.

    You should look for a music documentary called "The Wrecking Crew". Its all about the studio players who were on like 99% of the hit records (in the USA) from like 57 to 72. I mention this because in it Brian Wilson (bass player song writer) had these players do all the music on every Beach Boys lp because they could do it better and faster. But the BBs did play the songs live. After watching this doc you will be surprised who was part of this group and what music they played on.

    The Beach Boys started the band in 1960 when they were in high school.
    The group's original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Distinguished for their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented themes, and musical ingenuity, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era.
    The only one that surfed was Dennis, and with the growing popularity of the sport in coastal Southern California, he came home once and told the rest of the group (especially his brother Brian) that they should write a song about surfing….and in 1961 they released their first song “Surfin’”.
    They went on to popularize what is known as “The California Sound” and “Surf Music”…including music about the surfing and beach culture, the car culture and youth oriented songs about relationships and school life etc.
    There’s so much more but I’ll leave it at that.
    Keep researching them….one of the best bands ever!

    It’s always hard for me to believe there are adults on earth who don’t know these songs. Especially ones who proudly exclaim they were born and raised in California.

    I grew up with the BBs and actually watched that program on TV. I don't know how anyone, regardless of their race and culture, can not appreciate and respect the music of the BBs. Back then, many, like me, felt they were better than the Beatles. And I respected the Beatles.

    I would check out 'God only knows' and good vibrations' by them. But now that you have seen this original one by them, may I recommend you watch Van Halen's cover of it?

    How can you be from California and never heard of The Beach Boys? Brian Wilson literally invented The California Sound!! They were called The Beach Boys because their earliest songs were all about surfing and the California lifestyle. They would soon grow WAY beyond that, however. Their 1967 single Good Vibrations is still considered by many music fans to be the greatest (and most influential) single of all time...as well as one of the most successful...and their 1966 album Pet Sounds is on the top five of just about every list of greatest albums of all time.

    Check out the Wrecking Crew. Most of the hits of the 50s and 60s were backed up by the wrecking crew studio musicans. The bands in the studio recordings sang the vocals, the wrecking crew supplied the music. A lot of big name performers used the Wrecking Crew. Carol Kay played the Bass, she was impressed with Brian Wilson. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wrecking_Crew_(music)

    Later covered, without eliciting any surprise, by Van Halen. It's kind of interesting how they moved from good-time surfer music (with a slight detour into the early 1960's hot-rod car culture) to mini pop symphonies. There was a bit of a turf war going on in terms of melodies and harmonies between The Beach Boys and The Beatles and I think it ended up as a draw.

    Flip the single over to play "Let Him Run Wild" to truly get how great a song writer Brian Wilson is. Your clip is from the Jack Benny Show so they put the girls in the bikinis.
