This is such a classic that David Lee Roth (of Van Halen) did a cover of it & Paul McCartney did an homage to it in The Beatles' song, "Back in the USSR" (which y'all should also react to). Y'all mentioned that you liked their "beachy guitar" - I'd recommend that you check out the King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale & his song "Misirlou" - it is pure beachy fire (& there are horns for Amber)! Another Beach Boys song that I think y'all would like (especially Amber) is a song they did in the 70's with Chicago, "Wishing You Were Here". Three of the Beach Boys provide the harmonies & it is such a beautiful song.

Brian Wilson is the GOAT! He flies way above everyone else. He used the Wrecking Crew to craft the instrumental tracks and then brought the Beach Boys in for the vocals and he decided who would sing lead on the songs. Lennon and McCartney were trying to keep up with him at one point.

@@johnfaram4684 Oh, *please!* Another one from the "The Beatles were the best ever!" brigade.
Let's look at some of those lyrics, shall we?
"She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah!"
"I am the egg man, they are the egg men, I am the walrus, goo goo, goo joob!"
"I wanna hold your ha-a-and, I wanna hold your ha-a-and!"
Lennon in particular? Don't even get me started on 'Imagine,' a candidate for the most overrated pop song ever.
Listen to _that_ side by side with 'What's Going On?' by Marvin Gaye, a far superior piece of musicianship by every measure. I'm fed up with 'Imagine' being used as a protest song. It's a cliche. Lennon didn't even believe in the song's message. Marvin Gaye, on the other hand, had to tussle with Motown head Berry Gordy to record the album 'What's Going On?'
'Imagine'--such an intricate song, it's been mastered by every quasi-talented busker on every city street corner of the Western world. That makes it popular, yet it doesn't make it a masterpiece.
The Beatles were just a catchy pop group--people from the '60s need to accept that. It's rose-coloured nostalgia writ large. I'm sure you could find many musicians from the '60s with greater virtuosity than The Beatles, yet because of the way that The Beatles were marketed (yes, marketed!), people keep going back to the four clean cut lads from Liverpool.

My sister's friend caught them. They had his name on them. Since Dennis left us in 1983, that show was not long before he passed away. No telling what those sticks are worth, now. By then Brian was staying in L.A. writing the songs while the rest of the band toured. He had session musicians (subsequently called "the Wrecking Crew") record the tracks and when the Beach Boys were back in town they'd record the vocals.

I was 9 when California Girls hit the airwaves. I absolutely loved the song. My grandmother from Los Angeles was in Chicago for a visit. I was out with her and my mom while they were shopping and my grandmother bought me the record. My first rock 45 RPM!When I got home, I realized I had lost it. I must have dropped it along the way. A couple of days later, my friend and neighbor told me his teenage brother found the record in the alley. I explained that it was mine and I had lost it. He went in to tell his brother and as I waited in the gangway, his brother tossed me the record from the window of his second floor bedroom. Fortunately, I caught it. Upon inspection, I noticed a tire track on the jacket indicating that it had been run over by a car. The jacket also had little warped spots caused by a light rain. However, when I went home, the record itself was in perfect condition. And I played it over and over and over…

My favorite introduction to a rock/pop song ever. The chord progression in that intro is unbelievable... as well as the blend of instruments. They used to start every concert with this song. The crowds went absolutely nuts. They put a little harder edge to it in concerts... and played it slightly faster. They had to do that for full stadiums. More sound. And they couldn't bring an orchestra along. This song dwarfs Perry's song. Her song is what we called bubblegum. I enjoyed your analysis.

The high-pitched instrument is an harpsichord, a baroque keyboard instrument that plucks its strings instead of using felt-coated hammers, like a modern piano - which hadn't been invented at the time - would. Harpsichord use became popular in early rock music in the mid-60s, when The Beatles, The Kinks (especially), The Rolling Stones, and The Monkees used it on quite a few tracks each.

Sloop John B should be next from the Beach Boys. The album version is amazing. Then for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, Brian and Al Jardine (and Al's son) did a slightly updated version in the studio (link below).
It's so cool because you can VISUALLY see some of the specific sounds you hear as they come in one at a time. Super cool how they did it! They also tell the story behind the song.
That version is here for anyone who loves this song... cheers! :)

It's been said (and I agree) that with the opening strains of California Girls, Pop Music shed its, for lack of a better word , innocence. There is a musical sophistication that seemed to unlock the narrow conventions of what a Pop Song was supposed to encapsulate. Lyrically it's still boy/girl themed. But musically it was a substantial leap forward. Pop music came of age and we have Brian Wilson to thank for it. RNB

I was privileged enough to see The Beach boys back in 1973. They opened up for Crosby stills Nash & Young and they absolutely stole the show. What was really great was this was in Dallas Texas and there were a lot of cowboy hats. But when the beach boys were on it was almost like they threw those hats away for surfboards instead. Those cowboys were rocking. It was one of those half a dozen or more musical epifanys that I have had at live concerts. It was a musically spiritual experience. One that I will never forget. Brian was not there but Carl masterfully took over all of his vocals. The high point for me was when he started telling a story about how Brian was at the beach and wandered into a cave and a half hour later he came out with some stone tablets and on those stone tablets were written the words to this song. They then immediately started playing surfer girl. I almost started crying. You see, I was living in Dallas but I was a Californian who missed my home very much and the Beach boys brought some of it to me.

Brian Wilson was a huge fan of the 1950s doo-wop group The Four Freshmen. Unlike many other groups who used a more traditional "barbershop" style of harmony, with the four parts usually no more than an octave apart, The Four Freshmen used an OPEN harmony, with the parts much farther apart. When Brian was in his early teens, he worked out ALL the parts to The Four Freshmen songs on the piano and then studied what they were doing. He then went on to write an enormous number of amazing songs of his own (his cousin, Mike Love, wrote most of the lyrics, and Brian wrote the music and arranged it).

The beach boys had music producer Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' which was a new invention, with big backing sounds and backing music, unlike the 50's that usually had a small 5 piece band. He was the father of the music progression from rock and roll to the 60's music.
