    The Beach Boys are one of the most unique groups in music history, period. Nobody has ever been able to emulate or copy their style, sound, or flair. They became the definitive "beach" sound and whenever you hear them you can't help but think of California, beaches, surfer dudes, blonde beach babes, and good old fashioned teenage fun.

    • @s.mcpherson6354
      @s.mcpherson6354 2 года назад +3

      Those are who I consider the great bands. There's excellent groups, but you can still ask yourself when you hear a new song, "Is that...?" But then there are other musician/cmposers like Queen, Pink Floyd, Prince, Bowie, etc--and Brian Wilson, and their work is so original that you know who it is instantly, and no one dares to copy the style because it is so iconic within rock that they know everyone will instantly call them on it.
      On a separate note, these guys might really like The Wrecking Crew video about the making of this song. The brothers and cousins are excellent harmonizers, but the musicians behind all of this stuff was a collection of geniuses. The choice to use that Player Piano in that one section was brilliant.

      @@ffjsb It seems that, for most people, what was so special about The Beach Boys were Brian Wilson's genius compositions outside of the surf genre, although many of those songs still had that tilt. I loved Jan and Dean for fun too, but no one compared them to the Beatles but even The Beatles admitted to admiring Wilson's work.

    • @s.mcpherson6354
      @s.mcpherson6354 2 года назад

      @@ffjsb I agree and I like it a lot, But I also know tons of people who are very musically savvy, but they don't admire Brian's work. But what artist couldn't we say that about? Being 'good' isn't about satisfying everyone else, it's about a true talent satisfying themselves. If some people don't 'hear' that, that's fine. There's types of music I don't like that much but I know it has legit fans. We don't all have to agree, especially when it comes to art. That sort of defeats the purpose. I'm just glad enough of us liked him that he continued to create more art.

    • @glennelfmann3143
      @glennelfmann3143 2 года назад +6

      This was recorded over a two-month period using top Los Angeles session musicians - the Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on the track. About 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, and at least 12 musicians played on the sessions. It's hard to know whose performances ended up on the record, but some of the musicians involved were Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Al de Lory (piano).
      Brian Wilson played bass when the Beach Boys went on the road, but he brought in Carol Kaye to play bass guitar and Lyle Ritz to play upright bass on these sessions. Kaye recalled in a Songfacts interview, "He did the very first take on that with Ray Pohlman at Goldstar and scrapped that. And the other 12 dates I'm playing on - that's 36 hours - he did not change that bass part all during that time. He changed all the rest of the music, he didn't change the bass part. This is what he wrote. It was both bass players at that point - I'm playing the upper part and Lyle's playing the lower part. If you listen to jazz, that's the feel that he wrote."

    You may be surprised to hear that there is another group that fits that box. Jan And Dean were a singing duo/group that were around the same time as the Beach Boys and shared a lot of their sound, especially the vocal harmonies. "Sidewalk Surfin'" is about the brand new (at that time) sport of skateboarding. "Dead Man's Curve" is about a twisty piece of road in Los Angeles that claimed a number of lives. "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" - much of their music was specifically about L.A. (Pasadena is one of the satellite cities of L.A.) They are great, and they have the same sound as the early pre-"Pet Sounds" Beach Boys. :)

    It's easy to overlook what a game-changer this song was in 1966. "Good Vibrations" was absolutely trailblazing.
    It was recorded at two separate studios, and you can hear the tape splices when they switched between the separate recordings. It was extremely elaborate and expensive to produce. In addition to the orchestral instruments, there's even a theremin.
    This was a masterpiece of composition, sound engineering, and music production by Brian Wilson.
    It was a different time when popular music had to be G-rated, but Brian Wilson used some psychedelics like LSD, and that colored the way he saw and heard music. Their lyrics were very innocent and innocuous, but the musical composition here was like nothing before or since.
    In the few years that followed, popular music changed in a major way with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin writing edgier songs, but that change started right here with this psychedelic masterpiece.

    Yes and Glenn Campbell was one of the Wrecking Crew before he went off on his own as a solo artist. Glenn is an unsung guitar player.

    Brian Wilson was the main songwriter but his father was very hard and critical towards him which caused him mentally but Pet Sounds record was incredible ✌️

    Masterpiece! The space whistle like sound you might be wondering about comes from a theremin, an electronic musical instrument invented in 1920. It's played by waving your hand around an antenna like structure. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin famously plays one on stage in the movie The Song Remains The Same, but save that reaction for another day. The Beach Boys released some ballads. "Surfer Girl" (1963) stands out. Brian Wilson wrote "Don't Worry Baby" (1964) in response to The Ronettes "Be My Baby". It features a really nice melody backed up with a lush wall of sound. "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965) is a fun song in that same style. So too with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (1966) and "God Only Knows" (1966). And for something different from them, check out the instrumental "Let's Go Away For Awhile" (1966) from their Pet Sounds album.

    I grew up in the middle of the Canadian prairies and in the mid-1960s when I was in grade five or six my friend and I snuck into his sister's bedroom, while she was gone somewhere, and he played her Beach Boys 45rpm for me. I was hooked. I think one of the songs was "Sloop John B." If you haven't heard that one it is great! Music that _still_ makes you feel good!

    The Beach Boys were experimenting with Pop sounds and Classical styles. The created something unique. Their sound will be recognized until the end of time. Brian Wilson put his heart and soul into their music. It literally "drained" him. Thanks for your great reactions.

    At the time, it was new and innovative in it's own right. Brian Wilson was the innovator of vocal harmany in the rock genre. He took the harmony of the Four Freshman and the rockin' sound of Chuck Berry to develope their sound. This song was recorded in 1966 at four different studios (Western, Columbia, Gold Star, and Sunset Sound in California). The vocal layers were initially performed by Brian with added layers of harmonies by Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Mike Love.

    Pet Sounds is said to be a precursor of Sergeant Peppers, some say it's better. The main difference is the Beatles play their instruments, with backup from others. The Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on Pet Sounds, it was all the Wrecking Crew. Just saying.

    God Only Knows is a Beach Boys' ballad. It's also one of the most beautiful songs ever written . . . the one song Paul McCartney said he wishes he wrote. In My Room is another great ballad.

    You HAVE to watch the movie about the Beach Boys called "Love and Mercy" (titled after one of their songs names), starring John Cusack (as Brian Wilson). EXCELLENT movie about them. It shows how his hallucinations from his mental illness gave him so many ideas for the sounds in their songs, especially this song "Good Vibrations". (plus so much more about them).
    I watched it once and then bought the dvd I loved it so much. ❤️❤️❤️

    One of the greatest single record of all-time. Period. Listen to The Beach Boys' "Add Some Music to Your Day" for one of the most beautiful songs ever written, performed, and produced. There's Brian Wilson... and everybody else whose made music in the rock/pop era. He stands alone. Or sits alone in his sandbox...

    Their early stuff had been surfer/car/girl songs (some nice ballads - Surfer Girl, In My Room), but this mid-60's era was another level for Brian Wilson and group. Nobody had heard anything like it at the time. Lots of people would argue that Brian Wilson is a genius. That word gets tossed around a lot these days, but if not, he was definitely incredibly creative...

    The Beach Boys were the summer soundtrack of my summers growing up. If you want ballads, go to their album "Animal Sounds". "In My Room", "Caroline No" and "God Only Knows" are on this album...which by the way, inspired The Beatles album "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heartclub Band". Two of the most iconic albums ever.
