Steve Morse has had his original Music Man Signature prototype refretted ten times since he got it in 1986, and that tells you everything you need to know about the player and the guitar.
Firstly, it means that Steve Morse's practice and gigging habits put us all to shame (do you know how hard it is to wear through that many frets?). After all, it's hard to maintain Steve's level of virtuosity without constant woodshedding!
Second, it speaks to the incredible versatility and addictive feel of the Steve Morse Signature. Why bother switching guitars when you can dial in any sound you need by flicking a couple switches? Frankly, the Steve Morse Signature's handfeel is so buttery, it's easy to understand why Steve never puts it down when he plays live with the Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple, and Flying Colors! We've come to expect supremely playable instruments from Ernie Ball Music Man because of their manufacturing processes (which blend old-world elbow grease with space-age precision), but the Steve Morse signature exceeds our high expectations in this regard.
Finally, and most importantly, it highlights the special connection between the instrument and musician. In a world where most high-profile guitar players have a different guitar for every day of the month, Steve's long-standing relationship with his axe is a bit of an outlier.
The Wildwood team is pleased to report that his signature has the same sort of mojo that led Steve to become a six-string monogamist, so let's take a closer look and see why the Steve Morse Signature from Ernie Ball Music Man has made us all fall in love.

Unusual sounds! This pickup system is like SM playing - complicated and awesome
Wow that really has that Steve Morse sound love it
That opening lick was crazy cool.......
Perfect guitar. It takes only a couple of minutes to learn the switching, very easy. I get almost every sound i need out of it. Sure it can't replace my vintage strat but other than that it's all i need.
Perfect guitar for covering all the bases.
Going through all of those pickup options reminds me of a John Cleese Monte Python bit!
Steve only uses some settings for recording. Other settings are designed with cleaning up a distorted amp in mind (via lowering the instrument volume knob), without switching channels. He has used that setup for a long time, and Ernie Ball released a simplified configuration in later years, when he started using Engl amps with all the channel switching options.
If Steve is playing high gain through an entire song, he most likely only uses two of the settings. With his solo band, or the Dregs, only 3 or 4 settings, depending on the tune.
Great guitar, great demo!
Needs a button. Once you press it, all circuitry concerning the 2 switches is roasted and you can never use them again.
Too complicated for you ?
I’ve got one of these, you learn it as you use it. I’ve never gotten my neck humbucker to sound like that though. Pretty far removed from a single coil sound. Maybe mine has a problem.
I've had a reddish fireburst model for a few years now. great guitar! stays in tune like a champ, light weight, lively sound, balanced feel etc. etc.
Who remembers the black La Cabronita Tele with the three TV Jones pickups in it?
Switchmagedon! Amazing playing Greg 👍
Just not enough options for me.
I suspect this is why the Y2K guitar came after this mysterious beast. Way too many switching options for the average guitarist IMO. Love the demos by Greg - I wonder if this made the guitar outtakes compilation.
Steve Morse gave an interview where he explained this. He said that he used all those esoteric options in studio only... when playing live, he used just a few combinations, which are the ones found in the Y2K.
So cool.
I’ve this guitar and I love it so much! If she does not be SM signature it could be a perfect signature of mine 😀🎸✨
Finally someone explained how it works.
Great review and great playing!
Always want to buy this guitar 🎸
Two of my favorite things, a MM SM guitar and a Greg Koch demo….happy dayz
Greg explains this even better than SM.
Seems overly complicated and would be a nightmare on the fly.
Greg played some metal in the opening!
😵💫
Greg play some shred !switch it up from the twang!!!
Not a fan of sig guitars but I gotta say lol... Heard this one is pretty boss!
Just finished watching this and uhhh Wow it's a lot more complicated than your standard electric guitar. Interesting lol.
I would hazard to guess that i's probably THE most complicated switching arrangement on a current mass production guitar.
PICKUP MADNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a little too complicated
As big a fan I am of Steve Morse, I'd never buy this guitar, even if it affordable. It's just too much his thing. I'd certainly try one out if I saw it at a shop, but I'd never buy it. I might buy some SM DiMarzios if I like the sound of the guitar. All I use are DiMarzios, absolutely love them. And I love Steve's tone, or, shall I say, tones, as he can get a million tones out of any note on the fly. There's nobody on the guitar scene like Morse. He's just a mountain of a string slinger. Been a fan since the early 80s when I heard him with Dixie Dregs.
I've got Morse Dimarzio's in my LP Custom tuned to C standard...it is a BEAST!
@@ArtbyPaulPetro I've since loaded some into my Schecter Deluxe and it sounds incredible now. Great pickups! Certainly not for beginners, or the faint hearted, but I've been playing for over thirty-five years and know how to handle these brutes. I stay in E standard most of the time. But when I do tune to D they hold up great.
@@angusorvid8840 awesome! funny I also had a set installed in my Gibson Explorer a couple of months ago. I also just got an Engl savage 120 Mk II and the pickup/amp combo sounds especially amazing with the Explorer! no doubt they are a great set of pickups!
Lovely looking guitar, but to complicated
hmm,, only good enough single neck pickup...::;;;;;
Farty bass on the clean, but what a crunch tone
I wouldn't play that switching nightmare even if you would pay me to do so.
