I have zero respect for anyone that scams and takes advantage of the elderly. My grandfather once received a call from a scammer, saying that his grandson just died in a car accident and they needed money for the funeral. This sounds ridiculous to many, as this is never how funerals and contacting family about passed loved ones, but for someone with dementia, it pulls on their emotions and literally messes them up. The scammers said my name to him, mentioned my parents, and my wife, and said just enough to make it sound real. He thankfully didn't give any money, as he was no longer at the state of mind to handle his finances, and his daughter was the power of attorney taking care of it all, but it still messed up my grandfather for a good while. called my phone, thinking he was calling my brother, and when I said it was me, he kept saying that no, he's dead, I was told he's dead, and I had to do everything to try and calm him down and reassure him that I am myself, and I am not dead. Had to leave work early just to see him in person.
I have been binging his videos from the start to the most recent. He has become a better interrogator and negotiator, nicer to the victims and terrifying to the scammers

I often wonder how much the actual workers know. Now obviously some of the more malicious scams where they’re actively editing html code and tricking people to get gift cards, those people are clearly aware and criminally inclined. But these tech support ones where they’re charging for fake software installation and fake software scanning it’s possible the day to day phone folks don’t realize it’s all smoke and mirrors because they are actually doing SOMETHING. I have no idea what any of this stuff Jim explains in this video means so if I started working there at that scam center and the boss told me to run x and install y when you see xyz and charge x amount of dollars I’d probably just shrug and go “if you say so” thinking I’m just doing a tech job.
@@RAKITHA9 That's the calm one. But with "literally, I'll kill you". Jim was like, "Jesus, stop it guys. What is wrong with your morale? Do you guys feel better when people suffering because of you?"
It is so deeply wrong that web advertising services allow scammers to buy ad space for pop-ups, etc. They need to be held accountable for what gets shown as ads on web sites
Yep, there are scam official ads on both RUclips and Google. Like they're so good at blocking particular text in comments but can't detect blatantly obvious scam ads
Just yesterday an older lady came into my work complaining about some money she had to send Amazon. After a couple questions, I could tell it was the classic refund scam. I told her to call her bank and verify what the people on the phone were telling her. It was easy for me to spot this as an obvious scam because of you and channels like yours. Another scam stopped because of you Jim. Thanks for all you do.
good job for letting her know whats up. I always tell my grandma all the scams ive heard of, and luckily she has no dementia and knows better than to accept anything on the phone if she doens't know the person. its fortunate she never wants to touch a computer and hasn't.
It is scary how untruthful the scammer is. Even when he is confronted by somebody with knowledge he takes around and doesn't give in. Somebody without knowledge has no chance.
It is useless to argue with a fool(scammer). Talk with the wise(Jim browning) and become wiser. Walk away from fools(scammer) by blocking them, ignoring them, and making friends with the wise(Jim Browning) by calling them for help.
My 64 year old mom got scammed the other day trying to pay her AT&T bill and she accidentally went to a site that just claimed to connect to her account, but actually just stole $250 from her and tried to get more, but the bank blocked it. I sent her some of your basic videos on avoiding scams and she said you make it so easy for her to understand what to look out for despite her not being very computer literate. So thank you, Jim. Because of you my mom now knows what to look out for and she's much more cautious.
And this is why I insist on paper bills and use the information on that to pay. That way I cannot get scammed unless they are stupid enough to send paper bills :)
@@HonestLettuce nope. They reimbursed her that money and 'investigate' the source of the scammer, most likely shutting down their transaction channels which is but a hindrance to their menace.

My dad got scammed once for a couple grand so this sort of justice is close to my heart. Keep it up Jim! The more you bother them the less time they have to scam vulnerable people.
Jim: You have scammed my grandfather. Scammer: No sir, we installed a firewall. Jim: "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking to scam I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you refund my grandfather now that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you."
My grandfather was scammed last year. He only lost $100 from a playstation giftcard. 👏 This is one of the best Jim videos I have seen. I always want him to be angrier than he is. I love the combination of calmness and controlled anger. Such a shame these evil scammers need to be blurred.
Wow, this is the first time I can recall where Jim showed us the audio of a call where he was actually PISSED off! When such an admirable man such as Jim Browning gets ticked off, you know those scammers are in for it! I totally respect you, Jim. Hats off to you and all you do! You may not be able to save all these poor people from being scammed, but you certainly have done far more than your share!
Came here to say the same thing. When his voice got sharp, it made my blood run cold. And then when he said, "Oh, I'll find it out" (about the company's address), I got a second chill. Jim Browning is in a league of his own.
Won't lie, my same thought. Like normally Jim is fairly composed and level, even if you can tell he is not happy, however this 100% feels like a whole other level!
Jim sounded legitimetly angry, as if he were that man's grandson. Not sure if its 'acting' as its not hard to get mad at lying scammers, but channeling that to fill a role was still super impressive. Great work as always.
Jim "Dark Knight" Browning's anger is understandable, especially given all he has seen and victims he's spoken with. Yet his focus in the call was unwavering. Jim is doing great things. Respectfully . . . the "character" of Jim's voice might more likely have been the victim's son. B-)
I don’t think it’s acting. He talked to that poor old man, who was so kind and even apologetic for talking slow, and then heard how confused and betrayed the sweet gramps felt over being scammed. Seeing such a kind, helpless person be taken advantage of by someone they trusted; is enough to get most people’s blood boiling. Then add on top that the scammer tried to *lie to his face*. No way that anger is just an act.
I’m assuming these jerk offs never refunded Jack his $1100?! ☹️☹️ I despise scammers such as these and adore elderly hard working people such as Jack. God bless him ❤️
I love how these have evolved from scammer baiting for education and entertainment to positive action, getting people their money back and shutting down the scammers. Kudos to you and everyone doing similar work
A member of my extended family used to work at Staples, and he said they had elderly people coming in all the time to buy gift cards to pay these clowns. Fortunately, the company (at least where he worked) was well aware of the scam, and he and other store employees were able to dissuade many from purchasing the gift cards. THANK YOU JIM for all you do!
Retail and bank employees are increasingly aware of these scams, I work at a Target and we try, with varying degrees of success, to stop a scam in progress at least once a week.
You got me thinking... if I ever need a different job or to supplement one of the stores they want gift cards from would be a good place to start if only to be able to attempt to discourage the card buying when it seems suspicious. How satisfying that would be!
I feel like I've seen more and more of these lately at the store I work at. Sometimes a retail worker warning them is enough to save them, but sometimes the victims get mad at US for dating to imply they're being scammed.
@@DraykonVokelda Where I work we regularly get the scam victims we failed to convince come back in to complain to US that they lost their money, they actually think we're somehow in on the scam that we specifically warned them was a scam and told them not to participate in.

The fact that that Jim has been doing this for so long and this is the first time we've heard him raise his voice says a lot. It must be so hard listening to these criminals scam vulnerable people.
I actually needed to backtrack a bit, since I thought it really was his grandfather. That was what I thought would be the reason for him raising his voice, which as you say, he rarely does, but it turns out he just had enough that day. When a quiet and calm man starts raising his voice, you listen.
@@dustscythe7702 Not sure they were stopped. Jim can call them out but it's the local police that needs to act to actually stop them. And I remember reading that the branch of Indian police that deals with cybercrime is understaffed and underfunded and often doesn't have the resources to go after most of these people. And even when they get them, the battle just begins and the lawyers get into action (and I'm sure these scammers have lawyers as well). And since these scams often happen over borders, I can imagine the cases being quite complicated.
I work in Fraud for a very large company. Scammers call our subscribers and promise discounts for a one time payment. I always gather as much info as possible for our back office folks. I did decide to call one of the scammers one time, and I told him 'I know what you are doing. I have told (customer) not to pay you.' It didn't faze the Indian scammer at all, he proceeded to start a string of cursing at me. They know I stopped one scam, but they just move on to the next one. It's whack-a-mole.

Unfortunately, the sad reality of the world is that the reason scam centers exist in India is that the government refuses to take meaningful action against them. They'll make show arrests but the bosses pay their incredibly cheap bail and are back opening new companies a month later.
It really is heartbreaking to see all the poor people these scammers have stolen money from. Thank you so much for all of the people you have saved and all the awareness you have spread!
I've taught my mom how to recognize scammers on the Internet. She's old, she's never touched a computer before 2010 and the first thing is that she believes anything she sees (adware etc), she's unfortunately fall to one scam (wich is where I've decided to teach her the basic stuff), the damage is kinda done because sometimes others scammers with random numbers are still trying to scam her because she has her number but now she leads the conversation before hanging up the phone like a boss ! Thanks for your videos Jim ! They're very informative and entertaining !
How to avoid scammers? 1) Indian accent = hang up 2) Any unknown stranger talking about your computer, wanting money, or asking personal details (especially financial) = hang up
I used to work in the visa chargeback department in a bank, the amount of customer that are affected by scams like these are in the thousands daily, more often than not they are elderly victims, like Jack. Nice work Jim!
I always wondered what happened at your level, when you discover someone was scammed. I work in Fraud for a very large telecommunications company, where fraudsters call our subscribers and pretend to be us, and promise big discounts for a one time payment. I naturally direct them to call their card company or bank to alert them about the compromised card.
Or the disabled. We're still trying to figure out how to stop the charges my homecare client is getting on their account. Their family is having to call the bank almost monthly to try to get bogus charges reversed. Client's social security was deposited on the first, even before anything was spent charges started coming off their card. When a family member got ahold of the bank the first time to see where all the money was going they found that this had been going on for several months sometimes a few times a day and there were no red flags issued with the bank.
Because they themselves let crime happened. Look at the position the world is in now lol how do you explain that one with all this mass surveillance? Smh
I love that there are people out there like Jim to act as a digital vigilante against the baddies who target our elderly and tech-illiterate and rob them blind. It’s often the case that the best types folks get victimized in these. You rock!
Just like the moral from Batman, a vigilante does well to bring attention to something, but a vigilante alone can't fix or even fight a problem that's as large as a city, let alone one spanning the globe.
As someone who works in an actual call center (I do tech support for Nintendo), these guys seriously piss me off. I have a pretty heavy accent (I'm a Venezuelan exile), and because of assholes like these, there's a significant amount of customers who call, hear my foreign accent, and are distrustful and/or demanding to speak with an american. Dude… this just happened to my 74 year old grandma last Christmas… they took $4,000 from her, and hers and my family’s situation is always bad… she just got into a car accident a month and a half ago, shattered her ankle… and if that wasn’t bad enough, most my family is in poverty and most of them live with her or depend on her for something. And so last Christmas, kids were taken from my parents and that was gonna be their first real Christmas with my grandma and that didn’t get to happen, my husband and I actually ended up being in a very good spot where we ended up getting everyone something. They all live in California, My husband and I, live clear across the United States, so we can’t even visit. I told my grandma what to do and honestly, no one else tried helping her. Her own brother said, “Oh well, let her learn her lesson.” And he’s actually very good with technology and has his own business. It’s sad the way everyone there treats her. I did tell her to come live with me but she won’t leave because apparently they all “need” her. (On another note tho, I love how you stood up for this elderly man and told them scammers off. @Fast Cara Yup because they aren't versed in modern technology. Preying on the elderly, disgusting. You are just awesome, man. The way you handle things, and help people, and talk them through things, is so kind and caring. Keep it up, man.
On the bright side they won't be able to do it much longer. In 10-20 years the very large majority of people alive will be tech savvy enough to avoid these and the scammers will die out. @@abigbutterstick1780 there will be new more complicated tech. Tech is seriously going to advance so much going forward with new algorithms and all types of things like crypto, NFTs, metaverses, that people who think they know tech today will not understand
@@SharkAcademy It's not the tech that's the problem. A lot of people don't understand coding, firewalls, and computer maintenance/repair. But they still have the ability to recognize the scam. I personally love talking to scammers. My longest call was 2 hours and ended with the guy cussing me and hanging up. I called back every few seconds just to say hi. the last call I made there was a message that said this number was not a working number. Maybe I have 2 much time on my hands or maybe I'm just a little sadistic. Either way, if me harassing them saves 1 person from getting scammed then I'm happy.
It' a fun past time for me as well. I get the typical AT&T/Directv scam calls a few times a week. I pissed one guy off because I talked low and he had to turn up his volume. I had my son scream as loud as he could into the receiver. 😅 He called me back on multiple numbers cussing me out.
These people (typically elderly, vulnerable citizens) are victims, NOT customers. Calling them customers implies they are getting a service in return for their money. Referring to their victims as "customers" is just another way these scam companies attempt to humanize their crimes and mould their worker's subconscious into believing they aren't doing anything wrong.

As someone who works at a call centre for a bank and recieves calls from victims of scams almost everyday, I appreciate people like yourself who stand up to these scammers especially for other people! Thank you for all you do! ❤️
I’m here learning about these scams, recently became a banker and I deal with victims all the time some of them are so heartbroken and distraught I have to walk and cry
I'm always surprised how long they stay on the phone with you arguing how they aren't scammers! You'd think they'd just hang up, but they're pathological in their defense of themselves. It's bizarre.
Please keep doing this Jim. This makes a huge difference, and brings education to people who can spread the word so that less people can get scammed in the future! Way to go being super stern with these obvious scammers.
I am an Indian and hats off to Jim Browning for what he is doing.. These fake call centers are being busted here in India and the agents are being sent to jail.. But the problem is that the owners still escape.. So continue this work Jim so that these Fake Call centres are completely demolished..
Genuine question I feel like if the local police departments were given more direction it wiukd be fairly simple to track down these call centers. What are they doing or have they started doing to try and shut these down.
@@VishtheFish101 local PD is probably in on it. You can't run organized crime there without giving police a cut. This is why you should doubt the arrest reports too. Too easy to let the bosses go and present innocent people or low level scammer as a big arrest
The bigger scam centers are better connected to the local government and police. They'll occasionally bust small call centers to pretend they are doing something about this, but it's all a show. Scamming is a huge part of their economy so there's no way it will be shut down.
You got to love when Jim get annoyed with the scammers, talks harshly and later "drives his it-tank" directly through their scam center demolishing every scammer on its way.
As someone who dabbles in networking-related software, I'm dying at the "2% of firewall remaining" concept, like some kind of defence mechanisms in a video game.
“Captain Kirk, sir! We have a problem, sir!” Yells random redshirt number 22 from his station at the {defensive system control station}. “What is it that it’s so important right now, trooper. Can’t you see that we’re under attack?” “It’s the firewall, sir! It’s at 2%!” *A giant, holographic forcefield-esque shield surrounding the ship glows concerningly dimly and flickers*
What I dont understand is how individuals like this guy can disrupt and expose the scammers yet governments with their vast IT monitoring equipment and experts cant seem to do so! 😢
Way to go Jim! Take them out behind the woodshed. These kind of scammers go after the elderly ALL THE TIME and it’s sickening. Everyone make sure to tell your grandparents to call you first if they are at all curious that they might be being scammed. For some reason, a lot of them are willing to pay several hundred to thousands of dollars for “tech support” instead of asking a trusted relative or friend first.
Hey now, lets not go overboard. Some scammers are worth quite a lot. They are mostly worth exactly the amount of money they have sucessfully scammed off people. The ones who target the elderly can be very wealthy I hear.
@@CommanderTK9091 I doubt it. Edda doesn’t sound witty. You do realize the definition of ‘worthless’ is also having no good qualities; deserving contempt. Scammers are worthless people period!
Ohhh Jim, watching their total of revenue is so sickening. Broke my heart at all the innocents of customers that has been affected. Jim, i love watching your videos and thank you for everything you do combating scammers.
India really needs to fix their scammer problem since it is giving their country a very bad reputation worldwide. I'm at a point now that I cannot trust any phone call with a person speaking with an Indian accent since I automatically assume that they are a scammer - which is most unfortunate to all the actual legit phone centers in India.
Seriously man. I'm indian and I completely agree. But I feel it's not gonna go anywhere because the police simply don't give a fuck. They're either paid off or they consider such targets beneath their level. Everyday there are news reports of such scammers, they get reported, the channels just give a passing mention and it's never heard from again. I've heard a couple times about a new cybersecurity division that has opened up but I'm still skeptical of the effectiveness of that.
here’s the thing. No one will ever phone you up, regarding your pc being ‘hacked’ or something. You always phone people up. They don’t phone you up first. So be wary if someone phones you up first, regardless of whether it’s an Indian, american, european, etc.
The audacity of this guy trying to argue over where the company is located instead of just hanging up 😂 A friend of mine's husband is going into cyber security and he's interested in doing stuff like this in his off time and I highly encourage it.
I hate scammers who even after finding out their "company" is running scams that they know are ruining people's lives choose to continue lying and making profit off of the scam. That is what really defines people as amoral assholes.
I think the word you are looking for is immoral ie actively acting against moral norms. Amoral means something different ie something that doesn't fit within the scope of moral judgement such as a force of nature like a hurricane that simply runs it's course with no capacity to consciously make a moral choice whether to act for good or ill.
tbf some of those people are quite young and in desperate need for money. they may have little to no idea about what the company actually does and they would sign the papers . it isnt until later that they find out and even so they cant do anything because they are bound by a contract and it is too expensive to terminate the contract. there have been instances where these people felt guilty and wanted the operation to stop so they contact youtubers like jim browning, pleasant green etc. but what they do is very risky as the companies sort of blacklist the whistle blower and send people after them to beat them up.

But these tech support ones where they’re charging for fake software installation and fake software scanning it’s possible the day to day phone folks don’t realize it’s all smoke and mirrors because they are actually doing SOMETHING. I’m sure if Disney found out, they’d destroy the scammers in a heart beat.
Unfortunately, the sad reality of the world is that the reason scam centers exist in India is that the government refuses to take meaningful action against them. They'll make show arrests but the bosses pay their incredibly cheap bail and are back opening new companies a month later.
Disney is too woke to go after these scumbags all in the name of racism and diversity, the only victims are the poor people who fall for these scams.
Disney are Scammers themselves

Your mom is truly a boss!
Its pretty simple to teach anyone how to avoid scammers.... tell them to NEVER EVER send ANYONE money. PERIOD
90% of the scammers tech related all have the same accent...easy to spot one to be honest.
How to avoid scammers?
1) Indian accent = hang up
2) Any unknown stranger talking about your computer, wanting money, or asking personal details (especially financial) = hang up
I used to work in the visa chargeback department in a bank, the amount of customer that are affected by scams like these are in the thousands daily, more often than not they are elderly victims, like Jack.
That sucks. Yesterday I was charged 27 dollars for a game on Google play that I don't even know. Just imagine the scammer enjoying all those credits.

Not only are they stealing from tons of people and ruining their lives, but they are making the jobs of honest workers like us needlessly harder in the process.
I love the profile picture.
Also, I'm sorry you have to go through that. I'm a call center rep as well, but I'm aspiring to be an ethical hacker when I get stronger.
You are right. I had to call DWP the other day after receiving a letter that I had been overpaid ( which the amount matched and my details too and I knew about it). The operator had a slight Indian accent and involuntary, I went all cautious. The poor guy was very embarrassed but as I was sure it was a legit call, I relaxed a bit. I felt very sorry for him because ohe has to endure people like me who grill him for doing his job, just because scammers. . And so last Christmas, kids were taken from my parents and that was gonna be their first real Christmas with my grandma and that didn’t get to happen, my husband and I actually ended up being in a very good spot where we ended up getting everyone something. You’re a hero, Jim. My wife and I are constant targets of these rats. We’ve never been caught out but that is, in no small way, down to your videos.
You sir are a legend
Spread awareness as much as you can, for the sake of your friends! Great job on making these rats waste time and getting nothing out of it!
I hate scammers who even after finding out their "company" is running scams that they know are ruining people's lives choose to continue lying and making profit off of the scam. That is what really defines people as amoral assholes.
I think the word you are looking for is immoral ie actively acting against moral norms. Amoral means something different ie something that doesn't fit within the scope of moral judgement such as a force of nature like a hurricane that simply runs it's course with no capacity to consciously make a moral choice whether to act for good or ill.
they aren't "people"
tbf some of those people are quite young and in desperate need for money. they may have little to no idea about what the company actually does and they would sign the papers . it isnt until later that they find out and even so they cant do anything because they are bound by a contract and it is too expensive to terminate the contract. there have been instances where these people felt guilty and wanted the operation to stop so they contact youtubers like jim browning, pleasant green etc. but what they do is very risky as the companies sort of blacklist the whistle blower and send people after them to beat them up.
@@kamindhilokugamage9575 Yeah, they could get a legit job though. Even scrubbing toilets. This job makes more $. You've ever hear them brag about it to Kitbog? Many if them are PROUD to scam foreigners.
@@ElanaVital83 it’s a high chance they are just bullshitting. do you expect those scums to be honest?
