I attempt to disrupt a Bank Impersonation scammer called Faran for a whole week as I wait for the police to act. This one shows just how manipulative some scammers can be.
You'll see the techniques and language that he uses to manipulate his victims. And because he had a webcam, we can see him as he runs his Bank Impersonation scams against US citizens.

I work for Chase Bank. I am watching this video now, and paused it at the point where he spoofed the number so I could comment. When customers tell me "but they called from the number that is on the back of my card". I tell them THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD IS FOR ---OUR CUSTOMERS TO CALL US---, WE WILL NEVER CALL FROM THAT NUMBER!!! Yes I know that is in all caps, and I won't apologize. I can't stress enough to people how to look out for scammers. I talk to victims Every. Single. Day! 😢

I'm not a native English speaker and he doesn't sound natural and American to me. Idk. Maybe it passes with very old people who can't hear well. Regardless, I am forever fascinated with the ones who have THICK accents and still insist on names like Jack Wilson or whatever. It seems to me like it makes them look more suspicious. It would be better if they picked an easy to pronounce Indian name. But no, every time they're like "Yes ma'am. This is Americaguy Baldeaglerson. You have a virus on your computer. Well imagine for a second that someone stands in front of your door with a nice suit on and an FBI badge asking you questions. You'd probably answer (or ask for a lawyer). To this old guy, the scammer was the authority. Why listen to some lowly retail worker while chase bank is telling him otherwise? It's super obvious and easy for us to know who to trust because we have more information than he does. He grew up in a world where you trusted people on the phone, so when the phone says it's chase bank and the number is the same as chase bank, then it's totally understandable that he went back to chase bank instead of listening to a random retail employee.
So long story short, you said he can't be helped, I disagree. He just needs to be taught how to recognize scams. 1 week of watching this channel and the old dog would pretty quickly learn a new trick. I know I was able to teach my grandpa about this and he's about the same age.

Even if it was a guy with a badge, who says he's from FBI and he's telling you to go spend all your money in Hime Depot on gift cards, wouldn't you double check when someone says to you "Hey, that's a scam"? Trust the guy on the phone, but not the guy right in front of you? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Fortunately the BBC now frequently broadcast anti scam TV programmes that means that a lot of people are far more aware of the tricks used. Also romance fraud (no Jim in those!) etc. Public awareness can only help, as does the fact that most British companies now use "UK based call centres" as a marketing thing. Someone of Indian heritage that was born here has a very different accent.
Those Kolkata accents stand out. The Indian government destroyed their own legitimate call centre service industry thanks to corruption 🙄
