    We grow chia microgreens from the seeds we buy at the Sprouts grocery store. They germinate well and taste very good to us. Otherwise, we use chia seeds to make pudding. Greens or pudding? We can't decide which we like better. Fortunately, there are no chia police so we can have both. The seeds have an excellent shelf life, too.

    My daughter and I sprout bulk store bought chia seeds in clay garden saucers and eat them like alfalfa sprouts. They don’t develop that bitter taste until they photosynthesize. We think they’re best grown in the dark and eaten at 3 to 4 days. They’re great with hummus, pita, & tzatziki! I might have to try the coconut water with our method! We keep chia on hand in our food storage. Thanks for sharing!

    I've always wondered if I could use the chia seeds from Sprouts and now I know! LOL! Just curious, but can you pretty much sprout any seed and eat it? Are there any that would not be safe to consume as sprouts?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад +5

      Great question! Yes you can sprout just about anything and eat it, but you want to do some research on the plant and see if it safe to eat😋. Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are in the nightshade family and the greens aren’t good to eat... some varieties can be quite toxic so be careful about what you grow! A lot of the seed companies have sections for microgreens so you can see what seeds they offer and you can look for it locally! Check out some sites like sprouting.com, trueleafmarket.com and Johnnyseeds.com. Look in the microgreen sections for ideas! 🌱🌱

    • @OnTheGrow

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      haha "Musilangnous" that means that the seeds get a sticky, mucus like coating when wet. We've since changed how we grow these types of seeds, no we do add weight but not 15lbs. Just an empty tray to add pressure and help get even germination.

  • @vshanmugasundaram5717

      @OnTheGrow  4 года назад

      Check out this section on our website and it tells you for each seed that we had listed so far.
      www.onthegrow.net/growing-guide
      If you view it on a computer it will have a reference for what ET, W and BO mean.
      The weight is to help you get more even germination, more delicate crops only need an empty tray as they can not handle 15lbs of pressure.

    Wait, why aren't you using weight? I have never heard that word you used before lol. But I'm very new to this.
    "We aren't using weight because the seeds are *misellagenous*. I probably butchered that spelling."
    By the way, I LOVE your grow space. What a cool use of a trailer. I'm a recovering clinical laboratory scientist and have become more and more interested in hydroponics. This is all of the things I love about lab science, but without any of the mess that we call the US healthcare industry. I just started my first 5 small seed trays today (Just some arugala seeds, dried lentils, and chia seeds I had in the pantry. We'll see how it goes!). My next crops will be Shiso (friends with a private sushi chef), Sunflower, and
    Right now, I'm growing my first (America's favorite) herb in DWC. While that's in the works, I'm getting hooked on learning about sprouts and microgreens! This is what's drawing me in: the quick turnaround time to harvest, the low energy consumption (these LED bulbs don't consume too much I imagine), the low nutrient/water requirements, the ability to use cheap grow medium (sand is free in HI, but I think I'll splurge on the coco). I'll bet your biggest cost are the seeds (or maybe the coir- I see you've switched to that).
    Your space reminds me of the lab----well, it is a lab! And I love how you folks are constantly conducting experiments to improve your crop. Definitely inspiring me to create my own operation. But, I'll start with growing greens to feed my family first!
    So many question: maybe you have addressed in a video:
    Is your trailer climate controlled?
    What type of water do you use? Tap, filtered, Reverse Osmosis?
    Have you (or would you) release a video on your monthly maintenance costs (including electricity, water, consumables (seeds, grow medium))?
    Kudos and Thank you!
    Okay, back to binging your videos!

I had a 30 year career as an artisan cheese maker and off the top my head first thing that came to mind "post pasteurization contamination" leading to potential "food borne illness".
