David Marks, who came into the band much later, was also a neighbor of the Wilsons, and played guitar with Carl and Brian (on piano) while all three of them were just starting to figure out how to play their respective instruments.). @@martyjansing2675I have always been curious how they put this together. Do you know how many takes it took for each song? I have never had the opportunity to attend such a performance, but I have heard they have to do quite a bit of moving various cameras and such and that it can take some time.
@@Neal_Schier It was a LIVE show with an audience. One take. McCartney and Jaggers were there All McCartney could say was, "Mozart was reborn in Hawthorn". That's the LA neighborhood where Brian and crew grew up.
@@martyjansing2675 Yes, I see it was in front of a live audience, but notice that you never see another camera. For example, during Good Vibrations there are a ton of close-ups but also wonder wide shots over the band looking out at the audience. In those you don't see the other cameras. Lynn Turman Not only hard, but expensive -- all those string players, singers, and musicians need to be paid -- AND it requires the best in sound-reproduction and sampling technology. The Beach Boys could not possibly have done this onstage in 1967. They would have had to charge HUGE ticket prices to turn a profit, and the general public was not ready to pay that kind of money for a mere "rock concert", no matter how amazingly progressive it would have been.
This was like the 3rd or 4th performance I believe so the nerves about how it would be received were gone, and he was probably just having a good day mentally, This is Brian at his 100% best. And when he’s 100%, he is second to none.
What this man went thru to get to the point of this performance always gets me emotional, this was the 1st time he performed this live. He almost backed out of this.
He wasn't so bloody happy on the second performance of Smile, at the Colston Hall in Bristol. He looked terrified ! He walked on stage, we rose to our feet and screamed and clapped and stamped our feet for several minutes. To share such a moment with so many was an absolute privilege.
Yes, me too! It makes me happy to see that he's happy in this Live Concert because he was afraid at first to do this concert because he thought it might bring him bad memories back of his anxiety attacks and other things he didn't wanna remember. But I'm glad me made a new better memory with this!
I was paying attention to that too! He's now singing a lot of Mike Love's parts, while that larger man with no instrument is taking many of Brian's old parts.
@@HenryDavidFloyd I know you meant no insult and I'm not replying to argue with you or defend him, but just a bit of info -- that larger man is Jeff Foskett who actually plays a LOT of instruments in this concert if you look again, and yes indeedy he can hit the vocal range Brian has lost. He has done the same with a lot of fantastic bands like The Eagles and the touring Beach Boys versions over the last decades. Look him up, he's pretty legendary himself. He's not with Brian's group anymore but certainly left his mark in a great way. No argument or defense, just hoping to impart some new info for you to explore.
The first thing I ever heard from this album was the second part of 'Surf's up', in some documentary about Brian, and the preparation for the first Smile-tour. Just him on a piano, from the 'Dove nested towers..' part. We all throw around big words way too much, but his songwriting is truly amazing.
Surf’s Up may be one my most favorite songs ever, and it was certainly a joy to listen and observe the masterful musicians and vocalists perform one of the best pieces of music ever created.
Brian "the American Mozart" Wilson! A top musician! You see and feel the pleasure Brian has, while making/creating music! Thanks from the Netherlands!!!!❤❤❤
So lovely to see Brian as the musical genius that he was and still is and not just some tragic casualty of acid and mental illness, relegated to be a sad footnote in the history of Rock 'N' Roll. You conquered what ghosties were buzzing around and messing with your head, and came back to the world in a splendid fashion. Thank you for finishing something beautiful that you started so long ago.
@PianoSoulos - I love the 2. Movement in particular for that reason! Amazing stereo mix, too! So cool how "Child" - "Child" - "Child" is bouncing back and forth between the two channels! :-))
My two-year-old son, Francesco, has listened to this whole concert today ... his expression was enchanted...this proves that the genius of Brian Wilson has no barriers ... his music reaches the soul of anyone ...
In this live performance I can really see the younger Brian coming out. All that happiness to be playing this magnificent album. He really regained his confidence in finishing Smile and it shows. And he even followed it up with another masterpiece That Lucky Old Sun. Brian was on top form in the mid to late 2000s. Almost comparable to his golden period from 1964-1966 (different contexts of course).
Considering all the tragedy Brian’s been through, his reluctance to show much emotion, and the initial failure of creating this masterpiece of an album, seeing Brian genuinely happy with a big smile throughout (especially at the very end) makes me teary eyed. This performance brings a real sense of meaning to the title SMiLE :)
It really is a modern symphony. Brian not only wrote it but produced the whole thing. The Beatles had George Martin producing their music when Brian wrote this music. It also has such deep meaning. Listen to the lyric.
"A teenage symphony to god" as Brian Wilson put it. I have to say it, this is no doubt better than Sgt. Pepper. If this came out then, music today would be nothing like the way it is. Still, it came out eventually, and now we can always enjoy the majesty of this album.
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. Brian absolutely killed it. To me the most astounding performances from Brian were on Wind Chimes, Surf's Up and Vega-Tables. this man saved my life. Long live Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
Only 23 and composing such complex and complete musical soundscapes that tell the story of the emergence and development of the Frontier and Americana. I think that if this came out - as performed here - in the three movements, with all the complexity of sound and imagery, in 1966/1967 that it would have been TOO overwhelming for people to comprehend. The other Beach Boys themselves couldn't wrap THEIR heads around the advanced concepts and lyrics and THEY knew where Brian was coming from better than suburban America. This is almost too complex to fully comprehend NOW. it is a work of amazing musical reach - it's our privilege to be able to be stunned and amazed at both it's beauty AND - at Brian's triumph and majesty in showing off his masterpiece to the world.
There was a better work of Brian Wilson which was Pet Sounds...There was also a multitude of music as complex as Smile all over Europe and America in a few styles; Musicals as being one of them however at that time the only music people were listening to on mass was popular music simply because the Avant-Guarde had driven a deep rift between pop and atonal classical music which Smile was certainly not the former for the most part. It isn't a case of ''Too overwhelming for people to comprehend'' but rather pop music had its stucture set overwhelmingly by The Beatles who took the basic blues chords and soon opened up the harmonic links that tie many more formulas together. The Beatles came from knowing almost nothing musically and then developed at a staggering pace. Its a real shame Brian wrote his last No1 hit at the age of 24 as he sunk into depression and probably despair also the drugs and Eugene Landy who was only there to have access to a true genius...must add it made my stomach churn over when I saw footage of landy linking arms with Brian just like hetrosexual lovers do...Just puked at the thought of it again. I mentioned The Beatles here not because I'm trying to make comparisons or say who's best but because they both have acknowledged they were trying to top each others songs. Brian says he was jealous of songs like 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'....('this song just blew my mind...the electricity of it blew my mind') 'Norwegian Wood,' 'Michelle' and Starwberry Fields Forever' (Rubber Soul) and Paul McCartney, Lennon 'God only Knows' as Paul stated ''I wish I could write songs like that''...Carl Wilson added he wasn't jealous but was just in awe of the Beatles. I am trying to paint the picture of the strong possibility neither group would have had the reach and intensity without the other and the competition turned out to be healthy...many other bands appeared soon after which was in the WAKE of the Beatles and Beach Boys and this changed everything as bands became very good for they now were required to write their own material and lyrics. 'I am The Walrus' showed you could write seemingly almost nonsense lyrics like a poetical licence instead of having another guy building the song-same for the melodies with the Brill building amongst others. Still to this day noone have topped The Beach Boys in vocal harmony, quality of songs, originality, and sheer beauty ,The Warmth Of The Sun, Kiss Me Baby, God only Knows, to name just a few.
@@MICKEYISLOWD don't ignore the influence of Dylan. Lennon was heavily influenced by Dylan's lyrics, and Highway 61 Revisited set the bar for what a rock album should strive to be, and preceded Rubber Soul by more than 3 months - most rock/pop/R&B albums up to that point were collections of singles with filler.
SMiLE is incredible, looks like a great psychodelic doo wop suite, and at the same time looks like a big piece of classical music. It's just amazing,I can't really define this...
"psychodelic doo wop" is the PERFECT way to describe this. It really combines that so totally American style of 'doo wop' with the emerging Europeanization of American music at the time. This is so great.
Since hearing the Smile Sessions record in its entirety recently this music has taken possession of me. I can’t stop hearing it even when I’m not even listening to it. Brian tapped into something when he created this living creature and I don’t know what it is
+coffeehigh420 Brian said back in the 60's that one day he'd make music people would pray to. I'd say he got as close as anyone could with that opening harmony.
He looks so happy and lively performing this. I guess it was a real dream come true for him. A little later than he probably expected, but he still accomplished his dream.
WastrelWay Let me add -- no edits here! -- that I mean 20th century composers. Back in the day we had Charles Ives, too, who pioneered American composing with his episodic suites. When I first heard Ives, I hated it. Of them all, I think Wilson has the greatest gift for melody and the use of experimental harmonies. Not to mention the gorgeous instrumentation of "Smile" which is on a par with Holst's "The Planets". When I first hearrd "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" I hated it!
WastrelWay Can you even begin to imagine how difficult an overall piece of music this must have been to perform, live, without any "edits" ? The album itself was a minefield of splices and edits, but not this concert ! Mind-boggling !
"Surf's Up" carried me through 1970-72. It's still carrying me today. Thank you, Brian Wilson. You are better than a genius. You're genuinely beautiful.
SN2903 The beach boys had one good album, ”Pet sounds”. The Beatles is the greatest and most influential band ever. The beach boys isn’t even near as good compare to the Beatles.
I can’t believe how engaged Brian is here and the energy he puts out for a 62 year old man at the time. Especially after all the abuse he went through and how his voice was almost wrecked through self abuse.
This just goes to show what kind of genius Brian is. Nobody else could have ever done this. That band is the greatest formulation of musicians and vocalists period.
I’ve lost count how many times I have watched this masterpiece production by my hero in life. Brian helped save my life through his music and just to see him so happy with what smile finally become always puts a smile on my face. Thankyou Brian for the greatest music I’ve ever had in my life
19:54 to 19:58 -- the best Brian SMiLE. He's happy, enjoying the gig, digging his music, the music they're all making, and just truly in the moment. It's sincere and so good to see... and his high A note 8n Vegetables at 31:24 ("... NAME of your...") is just freaking dead-on perfect.
Kevin Hall Hello Kevin - The number of hits on this clip are not huge, but, I think, are from some incredibly, appreciative fans like me and, perhaps, you. Good Vibrations would have, of course, made "Smile" a huge seller if included in the album. The bulk of the "Smile" music existed as short musical vignettes, and when they were, ultimately, assembled for this concert, were assembled to produce what some might describe as multipart rock symphonies of incredible beauty. I thought when I first heard the Smile concert that "Smile" didn't contain any real sing-alongs, and hence, would never have been a huge seller if released in the 1960's. Was I wrong ? This deserves all the accolades and sales it can get !
Kevin Hall Hello Kevin, there was never a "Smile Album" until the last 10 years, and by then "Good Vibe's" was an afterthought as it came out in the 60's as a single, just after "Pet Sounds". Liking music, certainly, is in the mind of the beholder. As music gets increasingly complicated the audience gets smaller - the complaint that B. Wilson heard more than once. I believe the audience for this is mainly people from his generation like me. Is there some music you find incredibly beautiful ? If so, I would be interested in knowing a couple of your favorites. Thanks John
These lyrics are Tony Asher's original verse lyrics. A guide vocal with Brian singing them exists from the original "Smile" sessions. But Brian scrapped them and used Mike's -- which, for once, I actually think are better. The original "Smile" would have included the single version in order to help sell the album. Why Brian went back to Tony's for this "Smile" is a bit quizzical -- a bit of a slap at Mike?
Like in child is the father of the man he sounds kind of bored but I’m surfs up when he sings “the laughs come hard in auld lang syne” he really goes for it and it sounds BITCHEN
Smile is more ambitious in that the sound is more 'spacey' and the lyrics are hard to interpret. It stretches the mind. But it's a feel-good story for Brian to complete the project so many years later. Apparently, his mental problems peaked during its aborted production. No doubt Brian Wilson is the consummate artist. But Pet Sounds is more enjoyable, musically and lyrically.
It really is. They are both masterpieces in their own way though. I prefer smile because of all of the weird songs and song structures. Smile had some of the most beautiful and interesting vocal arrangements I've ever heard
Listen/watch this within 2 hours of watching the brilliant Love and Mercy and you'll appreciate the genius even more. Smile is just one of the greatest albums out of the American tradition.
Started to watch TV broadcast of "Love and Mercy". Totally captivated the superb acting and a story of mental health issues and relationships within The Beach Boys family group. We did not appreciate the genius of Brian Watson and were inspired to search RUclips for more of his music. Complex arrangements performed by a huge group of musicians led by Brian were absolutely enthralling. Superb audio and visual production involving Brian's wife Melissa. THANKS to all involved
This is my answer to those naysayers who - because they don't like Brian Wilson or his style of music - .Should Wilson abandon a genre of music which was his sole creation because some think he should? Should Steve Cropper and Otis Redding have abandoned the Memphis Sound because some didn't like it? Should Barry Gordy Jr. have abandoned Motown because naysayers didn't care for the style? Should Gershwin have abandoned Rhapsody in Blue" because it was too for out for some? How about Beethoven? Why don't we all just give up because somebody out there doesn't like what we do? Not only did Brian Wilson create an entirely new genre of music, he is an inspiration to so many of us because he is also an example of the power of the human spirit to overcome impossible and seemingly insurmountable odds. Before one judges this man, walk a mile in his shoes. I celebrate the man and the genius of Brian Wilson.
The part from 24:44 to 27:01 is easily the most emotional part of any song that the Beach Boys released, and well deserving of the standing ovation it received. Just incredible!
Both Zappa and Brian Wilson are huge in what they brought to the field of pop music, very distant from what was generally going on in the sixties, not the most celebrated, not the most embraced, but certainly two of the most interesting, same thing for my man Van Dyke Parks and his freaky folky barroque americana
The word 'genius' is tossed around a lot. As an aging Hippie let me chime in: My generation had its Poet Laureate - John Lennon. We had the Entertainer - Jimi Hendrix. But only Brian Wilson deserves the title of Genius - from the beginning (ignore the surf/car lyrics and just hear the music) to ... whenever it stops!
I really wonder if this would have been received as the counterpunch to Sgt Pepper Brian had in mind. It's so...complex. Another thing, from a practical 1967 perspective: How do you do three suites of music on a two sided record?
Until jazz, America has had no classical music of her own. This piece of music takes it to another level, the classical level. This is a major accomplishment as this music is certainly not jazz. And he began to conceive it at 23! The man is a monster! Great job Brian!
Elio Lopez Pet Sounds is better, and it was Pop Music. Complex pop music to be exact, no near classic, stop overhyping something that is not what you say. Classical music is another world compared to the music that emerged in the 60s. Also there are lots of albums in the 60s that are near pet sounds level.
+Azku Shang SMiLe is the best album and the most revolutionary. Whem the Beatles heard "Good Vibtarions" they were scared to death. If SMiLe had been realeased the whole course of music would have changed. This is true art.
I've followed, loved and respected Brian Wilson for more than 50 years But watching this is the first time I 've seen Brian looking genuinely happy and at peace.
I just watched Love & Mercy the other day. It's the story about how Brian was taken advantage of along with being manipulated and drugged because of his mental health. What a tragic tale, and a blessing he was able to get out of that situation. A true musical genius.
Think of the crap Mike Love is peddling as The Beach Boys right now compared to this masterpiece and you realize there would never have been a Beach Boys without the genius of Brian Wilson.
That buffoon single handedly bungled the greatest release in pop history, robbing us of what could have been the greatest series of albums in music history ... what a tool!
I've enjoyed the album a million times and will always appreciate the mystique and class surrounding the music. I don't know how accurate the movies about the Beach Boys hating on Brian and the album back in the day were, but I wish they'd gone along with the golden goose and kept it all moving with the genius Brian had spun up. The old video of him singing Surf's Up at the piano alone in 1966 inspired me to become a musician. This is truly a timeless set of songs.
good old brian doesn't know what world he lives in but this video and the performance of every single musician up there is stunning and it will love in my heart and mind forever. brian wilson is a timeless music cannonball
Smile is pure genius. The sounds he created are amazing. He is the reason I did my internship in LA.--early beach boy songs were my calling. Most interesting, Brian's demons were anger, criticism and pressure. I have written books on all of these subjects. If only I were a beach boy, I could have helped him early on. I am thinking of calling my new E course based on my last book Performing Under Pressure, Pressure and Mercy. It would be fitting homage to one of the greatest musical composers of all time. I saw him in person about three years ago in Brooklyn. Just wonderful, more than a concert, an experience.
+David Mitchell and 35:26? He just loves wind chimes so much it makes me so happy to watch him and listen to that song. That part of the song especially just blows my mind! Wind chimes was condensed for smiley smile and it was really odd, but brian finally made it better.
This music is Nirvana, or Satori. Every person that is spiritual or religious should hear this in the Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Temples, Gurdwaras, pubs, bars, night clubs, shopping malls.
We may not see him again. But what a legacy. That band was incomparable. RIP Jeff and Nick and Melinda. Brian you have brought so much love to the world. Bless you and find peace x
Saw this live in Atlanta in 2004 and the opening harmonies made me cry. I didn't understand why, so couldn't tell her, but we had a wonderful time, worth far more than what we paid to be there.Bought the CD.
I remember seeing the SMiLE show in Portsmouth in August 2004...and just thinking "He did it. He ****ing did it. He nailed it"...and his amazing band of course. The joy on the man's face was heart-warming to see. I took a big camera, in the 4th row, and he smiled at my lens for a few shots. Superb night, best concert I've ever been to.
Ah-mazing! This must be how people felt when they heard Mozart breaking the mold with his music. It just blew me away and lifted me up even higher than the soul level because I was drifting along in the experience of being human and all of its quirkiness, the ups and downs and ins and outs of life while also experiencing Divinity. I feel like I just lived many lifetimes all at once but observing them like God watching a human living on Earth unfolding in all of its foibles. So unique that it is universal and so opens a gateway to heaven.
This makes my heart so happy. Brian is a beautiful soul and what a genius. We don’t deserve him but somehow we are fortunate and lucky enough to have him
Perfection! Musical Americana. This has been Brian's pet project for decades. I'm so grateful he persevered was able to see it through - true American genius. He looks happy performing and has every right to "Smile." God is certainly in the details! Thank you Brian for sharing your musical soul. You are truly a blessing to us all.
Wow, wow, wow! Simply one of the best group of musicians assembled to play complicated stuff flawlessly--- live. Damn how I love this album! To argue genius works like Pepper vs. SMiLE is really pointless. They're very, very different albums inspired in part be each others bands. Thank god we live in a time to appreciate these works. In listening some of today's music, I think the best is behind us. Sorry... sounding like a bitter music lover and musician.

Lynn Turman I saw them do it at the Chicago theater. Positively blew me away!
Steven Churchill I'm jealous!
I don't realize it!
Steven Churchill I saw them do Pet Sounds at the same place...Awsome!!
I haven't seen Brian so happy and relaxed during a performance.
dancingirl11 Yeah.. what happened?
dancingirl11 this was the first performance of Smile performed in London.
David Seals This was actually done for TV. The first performance was in London at the Royal Festival Hall.
because mike love isnt there haha
This was like the 3rd or 4th performance I believe so the nerves about how it would be received were gone, and he was probably just having a good day mentally, This is Brian at his 100% best. And when he’s 100%, he is second to none.
The man who hated performing, who at 20 years old quit touring finally looks like he’s having the time of his life on stage
Brian never sounded better than when he sang and played "Smile" with this incredible band.
It's good that Brian was Smiling so much in this video. It made me feel good. Obviously, it made him feel good, and that's good.
I don't think Ive ever seen Brian SMiLE this much....ever.
❤️❤️❤️
Yes, me too! It makes me happy to see that he's happy in this Live Concert because he was afraid at first to do this concert because he thought it might bring him bad memories back of his anxiety attacks and other things he didn't wanna remember. But I'm glad me made a new better memory with this!
Fascinating, how Brian successfully re-arranged his vocal parts to suit his maturing range like in Surf's Up.
@@sclerismockrey8506 God bless Jeffery.
@@sclerismockrey8506it’s possible Brian wanted to sing more if a mid range lead like Love in this group
If the project had been completed back in the 60s, it would have been the greatest album of all time.
GeoJoe2000 Yeah, and Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have been! The Beach Boys got there first but fell down before the finish line.
burlingtonbill1 At least there's something to show for it.
GeoJoe2000 You bet !
GeoJoe2000 If an 'if' was a fifth, we'd all be drunk by now... like you...
burlingtonbill1 This is not psychedelia. It is trippy... but... it isn't mind expanding.
Unparalleled in pop music for complexity, originality, vision, and beauty. Brian has a super-human musical mind.
A good slice of Americana...
Unpararalled not really. Certainly right up there with the very biggest names.
The best thing is to see Brian being so happy. SMiLE was the biggest task of his life and finally, in 2004 he did it. He is a winner. Winner of life.
The song "Surf's Up" makes me cry. EVERY. TIME. This version is amazing.
The first thing I ever heard from this album was the second part of 'Surf's up', in some documentary about Brian, and the preparation for the first Smile-tour. Just him on a piano, from the 'Dove nested towers..' part. We all throw around big words way too much, but his songwriting is truly amazing.
Same, man. It’s a truly beautiful piece of music.
one of the greatest songs ever,
Woow😮😮
Thank you for finishing something beautiful that you started so long ago.
great comment, very well said.
Renee Nash I lovingly say “amen” to your comment! Well said friend.
Yes! Well said👍🏻
Well said, I agree wholeheartedly.
that happens to geniuses. They have so much that their brains spin in a whirlwind trying to grab reality.
This has to be one of the most complex collection of vocal harmonies ever composed, completely original and uniquely interesting.
@PianoSoulos - I love the 2. Movement in particular for that reason! Amazing stereo mix, too! So cool how "Child" - "Child" - "Child" is bouncing back and forth between the two channels! :-))
Apparently Jimmy Hendrix heard an early version of the unfinished smile lp and his comment was that it sounded like a barbershop quartet on acid.
@@mikethomas6120 he said that about heroes and villains

My two-year-old son, Francesco, has listened to this whole concert today ... his expression was enchanted...this proves that the genius of Brian Wilson has no barriers ... his music reaches the soul of anyone ...
I just played parts of this for my two-year old a couple days ago. I hope Francesco is now a happy four-year old listening to this still =)
Your son will have a great taste in music
Non c'è meglio che crescere i propri figli con della grande musica. Il mio babbo l'ha fatto con me negli anni 70-80 e l'ho fatto con mia figlia.
Lucky old sun is brilliant album
Late 2000s?
Seeing Brian so happy makes me SMILE!!!!!
You mean SMiLE?
Considering all the tragedy Brian’s been through, his reluctance to show much emotion, and the initial failure of creating this masterpiece of an album, seeing Brian genuinely happy with a big smile throughout (especially at the very end) makes me teary eyed. This performance brings a real sense of meaning to the title SMiLE :)
Guess he was feeling those good vibrations
My God, this really is a symphony
Yes, beautifully said.
Yup. June 20, 1965 was Brian's 23rd birthday.
Pet Sounds was recorded July 1965 - April 1966.
Today! was recorded June 1964-January 1965
Never forget Asher and Parks
SMiLE is incredible, looks like a great psychodelic doo wop suite, and at the same time looks like a big piece of classical music. It's just amazing,I can't really define this...
"psychodelic doo wop" is the PERFECT way to describe this. It really combines that so totally American style of 'doo wop' with the emerging Europeanization of American music at the time. This is so great.
@@lapdawg60 Surfin' Symphony for the Gods.

Since hearing the Smile Sessions record in its entirety recently this music has taken possession of me. I can’t stop hearing it even when I’m not even listening to it. Brian tapped into something when he created this living creature and I don’t know what it is
Welcome to the club 🤟
Enjoy exploring Brian’s vast catalogue of music!
Same! I find myself humming and thinking about these songs throughout my life constantly

R.I.P. Geoffrey Foskett. You were integral in giving Brian his glorious revival. Kudos to all of The Wondermints too. This is spectacular.

The joy in Brian’s eyes is precious. It’s like he knows this band is giving his music the justice it deserves. Congrats to all - beautiful!
Thanks for helping bring Brian Wilson's work to life in a spectacular way Jeff! RIP.
the opening (voices only) sounds like heaven
Literally one of the best harmony compositions ever
Name of this song is "Our Prayer",it is on Smile Sessions LP
+coffeehigh420 Brian said back in the 60's that one day he'd make music people would pray to. I'd say he got as close as anyone could with that opening harmony.
It's very aptly titled Our Prayer.
If you die and hear our prayer you know you’re going to heaven
He looks so happy and lively performing this. I guess it was a real dream come true for him. A little later than he probably expected, but he still accomplished his dream.
You can feel the Gershwin shining through...brilliant Brian. Thank you.
Barry Ryan For American composers, I'd say Aaron Copeland, Charles Mingus and Brian Wislon.
Barry Ryan good comment
Francis Azzopardi Yeah, after hearing this again it sounds even more beautiful, painful and brilliant.
"Surf's Up" carried me through 1970-72. It's still carrying me today. Thank you, Brian Wilson. You are better than a genius. You're genuinely beautiful.
The Beatles considered Brian to be their only true musical rival. Along with Pet Sounds... this is why.

Great opening song. So great to see Brian healthy and happy on stage.
It was the opening to the album
I can’t believe how engaged Brian is here and the energy he puts out for a 62 year old man at the time. Especially after all the abuse he went through and how his voice was almost wrecked through self abuse.
This just goes to show what kind of genius Brian is. Nobody else could have ever done this. That band is the greatest formulation of musicians and vocalists period.
I've been coming back to this video for years. Makes life worth living. Brian is SO. INTO. IT.

It was Brian's time to smile, Carl would have been so proud, Brian will go down in history, musical genius, 😊
This should have millions of more views, it's musical genius executed live.
It’s too complex and intricate for the majority of casual listeners.
This could never have been a huge seller - it is just too elegant - so elegant and beautiful.
but it was a huge seller wasnt it? mostly because of good vibrations
John Ehrhart
oh good vibrations wasnt on this? Pet Sounds?
It’s impressive that this many talented multi-instrumentalists and vocalists were recruited for this to happen in the first place
Mozart of pop music
Gershwin of our generation.
Personally I would compare Brian more to Beethoven.
embran The Beatles is more like Mozart.
The Beach Boys would probably be Bach or Beethoven
maybe , macca is also Mozart, but it doesnt matter. both are genious
Bach*
Brian crushes Surfs Up so hard. So glad he got his spirit back and is able to deliver this flawless masterpiece. Thanks for uploading!
It's such a difficult song to sing too.
That is the best I have ever heard him sing Surfs Up. I was in awe hearing the master sing his masterpiece.
Like in child is the father of the man he sounds kind of bored but I’m surfs up when he sings “the laughs come hard in auld lang syne” he really goes for it and it sounds BITCHEN
Who thinks this is even more of a masterpiece than Pet Sounds?
100%
I think it is in its own way. It’s like the happy version of Pet Sounds.

Drop the "possibly."
So talented, a musical genius, yet still so humble. God Bless Brian Wilson!
You know who the genius for the Beach Boys was after seeing this. What an incredible contribution to our culture....Brian Wilson, we thank you!
James Anderson Well put!
I’m with you, my brother.
The part from 24:44 to 27:01 is easily the most emotional part of any song that the Beach Boys released, and well deserving of the standing ovation it received. Just incredible!
Certainly not commercial. Usually, neither was Frank Zappa. Can I get a thumbs up if you think this is brilliant? Pop composition master class.
Best show I’ve ever seen, day of, got a single front row seat for 50, around my birthday in Denver. Nobody believes me that it was as good as it was.
What a voice, what a musician, so glad he's still with us.
Umm Dylan...☻☄
Bruce Horn You’re Poet Laureate was Bob Dylan. Lennon was good, but he wasn’t even the best in Britain; that would be Ray Davies.
I really wonder if this would have been received as the counterpunch to Sgt Pepper Brian had in mind. It's so...complex. Another thing, from a practical 1967 perspective: How do you do three suites of music on a two sided record?
One word - Paul McCartney.
I'd say Paul McCartney was the equal of Brian Wilson musically. Bobby Dylan was the preeminent lyricist tho.
Also there are lots of albums in the 60s that are near pet sounds level.

it's so sweet how brian is smiling and everything. he loves that everyone appreciates him :D
I just watched Love & Mercy the other day. It's the story about how Brian was taken advantage of along with being manipulated and drugged because of his mental health. What a tragic tale, and a blessing he was able to get out of that situation. A true musical genius.
This is actually a rock musical before there were real rock musicals...
Think of the crap Mike Love is peddling as The Beach Boys right now compared to this masterpiece and you realize there would never have been a Beach Boys without the genius of Brian Wilson.

Watching this on a random work flight to LV from NY, almost started crying because it made me so happy.

The Smile Sessions are beyond words true greatness.
Sorry... sounding like a bitter music lover and musician.
seeing Brain and the band perform 'Smile' was the most transcendentally wonderful moment of my life- thank you Brian, Van, Darian and the gang
Thank you, God. For creating Brian Wilson.
Home Alone now for 2 weeks but today I'm SO DAMN HAPPY and SMILING watching this. Brian's smile is like the sun!!!
