Fun fact- since 2000, the only movies nominated for costume design to not be a period, sci-fi, or a fantasy film are 102 Dalmatians, the devil wears Prada, and la la land. That’s it. And the only films nominated for production design to not be those 3 genres are the father, parasite and la la land
The Giedi Prime scene shot in infrared alone gives Dune the repeat in cinematography, imo. The duel and the sandworm scene gets it editing. I think Wicked would get in for production, but I'd keep Dune at the top due to the elaborate and entirely original costumes. For makeup, I'm holding out for Nosferatu.

I know this is about crafts but one small thing about actress. There’s no way Gaga is going supporting. In the same way Gladstone and Williams and Brian Cox held strong and wanted to go lead for their projects despite their candidacy in supporting and likelihood of winning, Gaga will be the same. She’ll want to go lead, so there shouldn’t be much hesitation on that front imo.
My two cents on some of the cases for Visual Effects: * How in the world is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes not number 2 lol? It actually did do a lot of new things with VFX, like for example, water simulations. The river simulations in the river scene ALONE took up 1.2 PETABYTES of storage! That's 1,200 terabytes! It may look on the surface that it's not bringing anything new to the table, but it really is in ways you may not realize. Hell, it MIGHT even win the top prize at VES over Dune Part Two. And Cole's right, there are almost entire SCENES in Kingdom that are fully CGI to an extent that it blew my mind. In the other apes films, mainly Dawn and War, had overcast lighting over the characters and environments, whereas here, a lot of it is in broad daylight, which is trickier to do. * Mufasa, I think should be worried about its visual effects prospects. Yes, the general audience might like the emotive faces better, but this is the vfx branch voting. They will snub popular picks like Everything Everywhere, Scott Pilgrim, and Oppenheimer all the time in favor of more impressive achievements. The first Lion King won 3 awards at VES because while everyone else complained about the fact that everything looked too real, it was very apparent that the sentiment was not shared by the VFX community. Even the environments and virtual camera movements in Mufasa make it look more like Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole than a photoreal achievement. * Also, I will concede on Furiosa. I complained about the VFX when the trailers came out, but honestly they're better than I thought. It's moreso the scenarios are more over-the-top than in the first film, but the effects themselves are very strong. I don't think this being a bomb will hurt it, though. The Creator flopped, and it still got two nominations. The fact that this is a sequel to a Best Picture nominee, and let's face it, the craft categories might have fewer Best Picture nominees than in most years, it will at least get eyes on it, it won't just disappear. * And finally, I wouldn't completely rule out Deadpool & Wolverine. Especially in the 10, like it will at bare minimum make the shortlist. Even years where a Marvel movie didn't get nominated like 2011 and 2015, they most assuredly got into the shortlist. It does have this lady named Cassandra Nova who sticks her fingers in people's heads in a weird way that's impressive.
The reason that Deadpool and Wolverine should be considered more in VFX is the multiverse BS. most of the time it doesn’t look all that great, but that didn’t stop them from nominating No Way Home. It’s got the Doctor Strange portals, there are some insane landscapes, there’s a big CGI monster. Most of it doesn’t look great, but idk if they care. It looks a little better than No Way Home, and that got in over a Matrix movie. Plus it might get SAG stunts, and there’s a decent correlation there sometimes
IMO if it has a shot, it's first and foremost for the Cassandra Nova face-fingering effect. Still don't think it gets nominated, but that was the only true standout effect IMO.

News just came out that The Apprentice now has a US release date and will be distributed by Briarcliffe Entertainment. Going to hit some fall fests and push an awards run!
I actually think Alien Romulus deserves the vfx nom. Yes the deepfake was ass, but everything else about the movie was insanely well put together (the space ships and the crashes were phenomenal)
I’m just getting sick of Diane Warren getting nominated every year because her songs always suck nowadays. They need to stop nominating her for the love of Hod. Because the past two years in her reactions for losing were straight up unacceptable, even if she never won an Oscar. She should at least be happy she has an Honorary Award now.
I do feel, at some point, she will win the Oscar. It's not like she ever had bad songs. Yeah, her songs nowadays aren't great (except Io Si. That one I cried to), but I can't deny her talent as an artist.
Yeah to me it's just a matter of what categories are Dune and Gladiator gonna miss, because they're definitely gonna share many of the same nominations lol
@@samy7174 they mentioned it and completely dismissed it. I'm not an MCU Stan or anything but that's just plain stupid. It's one of the highest grossing films of the year, No Way Home got a nom
Yeah, that's a mistake, they always get in no matter what,if there's a good/decent marvel it gets in Oscar rules:if there's a Diane Warren song,a John Williams score and a good marvel it just happens no matter what
Joker 2's sound at 8 is a joke; It's a musical, and there's going to be a lot of demonstration crowd sound. It has two times oscar winner as the sound editor.
I don't understand the Nickle Boys push. We know nothing about it. It really seems to me that it's a 'Goldfinch' kind of situation. Only one image released, all the buzz is coming from the novel not the film, it has a supporting actress contender which is expected to be showered with acclaim. We are basing the first reactions off out of thin air because anyone can go on Letterboxd and write a false review, as we speak. The festival directors opinion also don't count for much. They want the film to be a success, of course they do, they want to sell tickets. If it is such a grand cinematography contender they could have at least made an effort to release a better image, just like how the Queer team did! I don't know, it sounds a bit wobbly to me.
Even though Furiosa is out of the above the line categories I hope that it can still sneak back into a well deserved cinematography or sound nom at the very least
Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.
Oscars need to be more open to horror. I think Alien: Romulus, Abigail, M3ghan, The Quiet Place franchise (with Blunt/Krasinski) all should have gotten more attention or should get more attention.
I was holding back on Queer for a very long time. It was very long, without a distribuitor and we knew nothing about it. Then, the first image was released and I thought "wow, that's different. that's really good looking, actually.", then the second one and I go "Jeez, look at such a beautiful composition and Craig is just in complete heartbreak. Now you got my attention". The day after, everybody's favourite distribuitor A24 grabs it. All my problems are solved! It's getting in, and ironically you remove it from your predictions. Fascinating.
I heard it was a passion project for Luca that he’d wanted to make since he was 20. And my Best Actor predictions have been wobbly but Craig seems like he’ll blow people away
Welcome to another episode of “the Oscar expert is over confident in sing sing, Emilia Perez, and the brutalist, and under confident in everything except those, anora and conclave
I don't buy the brutalist sounds like that critically acclaimed indie movie that at the end doesn't happen at all(aftersun, all of us strangers) and I'm not sure about Emilia perez
FINALLY someone said that. Absolutely agree. I didn’t buy ‘The Brutalist’ like at ALL, and ‘Emilia Perez’ is definetly not that much of a deal as they think it is.
Just a reminder that The Two Towers and Return of the King were not NOMINATED for cinematography after the first one. Maybe something to consider for Dune…
They weren’t nominated because they were all shot at the same time, and the branch was being stupid and thought that the nom for fellowship was enough for the whole trilogy Dune part 2 is an entirely different movie than dune
@@ad-sd-vids5332 At the same time, it is extremely rare for a sequel to win this category (BLADE RUNNER 2049 I believe is one of the only sequels to win, and the Roger Deakins narrative played a significant role in its victory there).
@@ad-sd-vids5332 do we have any proof that this is actually the case?? I’ve seen people suggest it, but we don’t actually know that them being shot at the same time had anything to do with it. There’s nothing to corroborate that.
There's one really excellent effect in Deadpool vs. Wolverine that also became kinda trendy on social media, where the villain uses her powers to sorta stick her fingers in people's faces, but it also looks kinda intentionally pulpy so I don't know if that alone is enough to give it a fighting chance in Visual Effects despite being a truly standout effect.
Dune 2 may pull off 2towers situation and go along the path where is gets lotta noms but just few trophies Blitz may over perform in the vein of western front recent film I'm rooting for gladiator 2 based on 'so far' trailer Wicked not happening
I have now seen Nickel Boys. If it is a big contender it could very well win cinematography. It is shot almost entirely from first person. Also consider it in score and sound. There are interesting editing choices but also a shit ton of long takes.
I think it has more to do with the choice Joaquin Phoenix made to leave a film five days before shooting, even though he himself approached them to make this movie and pushed for those scenes to be written and filmed. I know he's gotten cold feet before, but this felt different. And there might be a lawsuit that happens.
Watching them argue over what to do with Wicked week after week with Oscar predictions cracks me up

Post-TIFF Predictions Update: Luca Guadagnino's Queer now has a distributor and it's A24. So what now?
I cant believe you guys still arent putting Deadpool & Wolverine in your VFX list. They ALWAYS nominate a Marvel film you guys
I think they forgot about it.. it's not even in the top 13
@@samy7174 they mentioned it and completely dismissed it. I'm not an MCU Stan or anything but that's just plain stupid. It's one of the highest grossing films of the year, No Way Home got a nom
They always nominate the Marvel film with the best reviews of the year but yeah since this is the only Marvel film this year, it'll probably get in
Yeah, that's a mistake, they always get in no matter what,if there's a good/decent marvel it gets in
Oscar rules:if there's a Diane Warren song,a John Williams score and a good marvel it just happens no matter what
There is no way hans zimmer do not gets the oscar Dune 2 is his best work
I can’t wait for The Apprentice to come out so people realize it’s a mid HBO movie and should be nowhere near Oscars
Joker 2's sound at 8 is a joke; It's a musical, and there's going to be a lot of demonstration crowd sound. It has two times oscar winner as the sound editor.
folie a duh
Lowkey been waiting for you to post this and been doing nothing else
Can someone please guide me on how to become / join membership?
Welcome to another episode of “the Oscar expert is over confident in sing sing, Emilia Perez, and the brutalist, and under confident in everything except those, anora and conclave
I don't buy the brutalist sounds like that critically acclaimed indie movie that at the end doesn't happen at all(aftersun, all of us strangers) and I'm not sure about Emilia perez
@@Cinemadiction I reckon the brutalist will do amazing at awards, just something about it
@@theprime6439 Not sure about, we'll see,it sounds like it's too long and while it would be probably be good, I'm not sure about awards
I mean, Emilia Perez is literally winning awards in every film festival right now.
FINALLY someone said that. Absolutely agree. I didn’t buy ‘The Brutalist’ like at ALL, and ‘Emilia Perez’ is definetly not that much of a deal as they think it is.
I haven’t watched this yet, but Wicked better be on almost every list. This movie is going to be huge in techs.
Just a reminder that The Two Towers and Return of the King were not NOMINATED for cinematography after the first one. Maybe something to consider for Dune…
They weren’t nominated because they were all shot at the same time, and the branch was being stupid and thought that the nom for fellowship was enough for the whole trilogy
Dune part 2 is an entirely different movie than dune
@@ad-sd-vids5332 At the same time, it is extremely rare for a sequel to win this category (BLADE RUNNER 2049 I believe is one of the only sequels to win, and the Roger Deakins narrative played a significant role in its victory there).
@@ad-sd-vids5332 do we have any proof that this is actually the case?? I’ve seen people suggest it, but we don’t actually know that them being shot at the same time had anything to do with it. There’s nothing to corroborate that.
@@ad-sd-vids5332 what proof is there that the sequels weren’t nominated for that reason? Is there anything to actually support this??
are yall sure "the journey" was penned for that movie? because its been out for like a year and a half lol
Dune 2 may pull off 2towers situation and go along the path where is gets lotta noms but just few trophies
Blitz may over perform in the vein of western front recent film
I'm rooting for gladiator 2 based on 'so far' trailer
Wicked not happening
I have now seen Nickel Boys. If it is a big contender it could very well win cinematography. It is shot almost entirely from first person. Also consider it in score and sound. There are interesting editing choices but also a shit ton of long takes.
When Emilia Perez gets one lone song nomination😭
I pray this happens. Every night at the foot of my bed
Last season I left a comment about how every year I care less and less about the Oscar race and that’s still true
The Apprentice is coming out
First to comment.
The Apprentice is coming out this year after all. Do you guys think it stiil can get into make-up and acting categories with the small distributor?
If a movie is good, it can go far even with a smaller distributor, look at Drive My Car. But The Apprentice is not even a good movie so no.
Your bias against Joker 2 is more apparent with each video
I think it has more to do with the choice Joaquin Phoenix made to leave a film five days before shooting, even though he himself approached them to make this movie and pushed for those scenes to be written and filmed. I know he's gotten cold feet before, but this felt different. And there might be a lawsuit that happens.
I know I'm in the minority but I truly believe Challengers will get a few nominations
Score and Screenplay
@@pb.j.1753 I want it to get in for Original Song as well
45:30 lol that didn’t age well watch the clip
Please don't give sound to Dune. I am sick of the headache producing movie winning awards!
