I'm predicting Ross. It's a wide open year in many categories, and Best Director is one of them right now. He's taking a risk, and it's giving the reactions you expect. Outside of Corbet, Baker, Audiard, and Villenueve (I have the last two in though I understand why some think they may miss), who else is there to fill the slots that is on their level of praise? The other contenders are established men, but with mixed reaction films (Almódovar, Berger, McQueen), are women with raving films, but they're genres the Academy is meh on (Fargeat and Schoenbrun) or are longshots (Rasoulof, Kwedar).
@@davidpunzalan7354 yeah my 5 so far Corbet, Baker, Audiard, Ross and McQueen with McQueen being the most vulnerable (the category usually has 1 blockbuster director in so maybe Denis has the best chance). Emilia Perez is too big for Audiard to miss and he has both the auteur narrative and the big Netflix push.
Well said, guys! Really blown away by the artistry of Nickel Boys and am hopeful that will be reflected come awards time, which inevitably means I’m setting myself up for disappointment 😅 Fingers crossed on RaMell Ross for that Best Director upset slot
I told u guy at the beginning of the year, sing sing is gonna eventually fade cause there will be newer fresher more exciting movies at the end of the year. U guys were so confident sing sing was gonna win best picture
I truly think Ellis-Taylor is gonna surprise if the film happens. Obviously gotta see how the season plays out but with the fifth slot roughly open I can slip her in.
Saw it today in London and it really affected me. The first person pov drew me in to it more. Literally being in their shoes in that role was so immersive emotionally for me. Like you, I will definitely read the book now.

Current predictions on the app: Best picture Best director Best supporting actress Best adapted screenplay Best cinematography Best sound A little on the fence on supporting actress and sound (I have it at #5 for both), but I can’t find a compelling alternative in sound and I feel blitz will be kinda like nightmare alley in terms of nominations that I’m not 100% confident in Saoirse Ronan. Score I’m not confident will happen (too many contenders already), and I have it possible for editing but there are many strong contenders already that right now I don’t have it in the five (currently at #7)
It's really a wonderful film. The last 20 minutes or so was the most moved I've been by a film this year. Probably my favorite final shot of the year also.
Ellis is someone I could see missing OR pulling off a wild upset should she make the 5. Glad to hear this about Ross--and not just because I've had him in my 5 on a hunch for a while now. It just makes sense for the Directors Branch to go for something distinct like this if Picture happens.

I can see a Best Picture, Best adapted screenplay, Best editing nomination for this movie But to overperform?, i don't trust MGM that much cause they have the fire inside and unstoppable being released later in the year And they're not good at multitasking like netflix or warner
I think this is a goose egg. Yeah, The Zone Of Interest was experimental and got in, but its concept was also experimental, and it was so intriguing. This one is WAY more divisive than Zone, and I don't think people are vibing with it as much.
@@seankoontz4235 when Life Of Chuck moved to 2025, I put in A Real Pain. I have 2 Searchlight flicks in, but I think we’re all just kind of waiting to see what happens with A Complete Unknown.
I don't understand how you praise this Cinematography but don't praise the Cinematography of PAT SCOLA, the DP of Sing Sing. Some of the shots in the trailer are a copy cat of his work in Sing, Sing. The hand reaching out to the sky is exactly like Coleman Domingo reaching through the bars. This is mimicking so much of Scola's style, like in Pig and We Grown Now. I don't understand your praise for one and not the one they are copying. Also, how can you say Sing Sing is not the best movie of the year. The Brutalist is the same old story, Anora is an updated pretty woman. None of these movies are original. It's like you just follow the crowd. Disappointed!

I was blown away also with the breathtaking performance of the great Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in this movie.
Damn, these photos are beautiful. I’m really excited to see this now, just nervous about the content… I don’t want to watch people get abused.
I’ve seen the movie and it’s incredible in how it’s about brutality without ever depicting it outright
The day that a nickel boy became 50 cent...
This is definitely this year’s Zone of Interest
I honestly think Ramell Ross could be the Jonathan Glazer of the year. This feels very much the Directors’ branch’s alley

It’ll show up at PGA because of the Plan B production maybe LAFCA, (Critics Choice has resigned itself to nominating big studio films , so no)

Hopefully it gets promoted. And hopefully the Academy actually cares enough to see it and don’t avoid it.

The top 5 in director is a little tough. You have to kick out McQueen, Denis, or the director of Emilia Perez. Not sure about that tbh
