  • Five years ago I reviewed Digimon World: Next Order and concluded that it was a bummer of a game that wasn't worth playing. Five years later, I decided to come back and give it another chance. Did I like the game more this time? Is it worth buying Digimon World: Next Order on a sale? Let's dig in!

    I found that the key is to "stagger" your Digimon. I always wanted one of them to be at a higher stage than the other so I could go grind and not have to worry about losing both of them. It made it so I could basically power level the lower staged Digimon.

    I played this game when it first came out and had a really hard time with it, getting stuck on the 1st boss of the game for hours due to the same misunderstanding of how to raise my digimon. I came back to the game this year with my knowledge of how the game actually works and had a blast with it, taking down super bosses and all.

I don't plan to get either of those versions, but if I do, I'll update this comment to say how those versions are / if they add or change anything worth mentioning.

    Next Order is my therapy. When the world is chaos or when I'm trying and failing at something I can always go back to it. Almost everything you do is progress in this game. You are always getting stronger whether through generational stat boosts, moves acquired, facilities or bits. It can be grindy sometimes but it can always be broken down into small manageable pieces.

    I love this game. I say a mechanic that would really help is giving the player a way to digivole and get high parameters faster when the player progress through the story. Once their digimon passes away, the player will have to grind to get to their parameters again to progress, which is what turns away a lot of players. There are tricks you can do mid game that will give your digimon crazy stats and lots of money, but it feels more like an oversight than a design (and I say these tricks make the game more enjoyable).
    The gym needs to be MUCH more efficient, especially in late game where you go against tough bosses.

  • @TheTetsuHai
    @TheTetsuHai 2 года назад +19

    The gym is mainly used to perfect stats for an evolution, pass time quickly while training and so you can control what digimon you digivolve into prior to the dojo being opened. otherwise always grind on high stat gain digimon or eat at the restaurant.

    • @eric3d2b
      @eric3d2b 2 года назад +3

      Honestly, the trick to using the gym properly, is that the only stats you should ever use it for are str and def (maybe mp). Every other stat is best to grind when you take 0 damage and one shot enemies. Once you hit mega, stat gains are terrible anyways, and having them out of sync means you can power level mons by having the older one knock enemies out instantly. Also, younger Digimon get huge boosts through training depending on the evolution difference between them.
      Since egg strength is 10%(+1% per each egg level) of the absolute max of any generation, every new high of 100 points is up to 14 extra power to the every other generation. If you get 5k of a stat, and max egg levels, you start off with 700, basically meaning an in training will absolutely win against a lot of mons. Once one mon gets a head start, then you can power level the other one.

  • @stefandiacenco
    @stefandiacenco 2 года назад +30

    Yeah, next order is quite confusing at first, with very important things like monster grinding and blocking not exactly being some of the first things to come to a new player's mind. Hell, I even went through a save where I was completely blocked and stuck in a loop of boosting my Digimon's stats in the training center and seeing them die of old age countless times while I was stuck through the story segments. But under all of that is a pretty neat game with a lot of possiblities and replayability to it. Gotta note how I love having to constantly assess the battlefield to perfectly time your abilities, but it all feels a bit pointless when you can consider how easily the game can be broken by just ExE spamming or other scummy tactics. 8.7/10 would recommend

    I got this game and finished it a couple of years ago, and had constantly mixed feelings about it. The change in battle system from direct commands to "order points" was the worst part of the game for me. I didn't know about training through battle at first either, and beat the final boss by relying only on the gym. I did try grinding through battles towards the end but I could never find the right balance between gaining stats and not having my digimon take too much damage, so I just stuck to the gym. The story I felt was lackluster too - most of the chapters were fine, it was just the ending that I felt was a bit anticlimatic, when they could've perhaps tied things together more neatly than they did.
    Despite how frustrating it was, the sense of wonder I got from exploring the game, meeting digimon and rebuilding the city was enough to keep me going. I had no idea the PS4 visuals were so much better than the Vita ones, and they're probably a huge part of why I love this game so much. It's just another experience that's missing from most digimon games. I just enjoyed the journey too much to give up on it. Contrast this with Cyber Sleuth, which took me two years of playing on and off just to finally finish. I think I will definitely revisit Next Order, perhaps put it on easy mode this time and just enjoy it!

    I also made the mistake of only training at the gym. The days passed and my digimons grew old with not much progress. Another mistake was using the instant evolution items that don't really help that much.
    Now I understand the game more. Even against way stronger enemies there's a chance to win if you get that digi fusion scene near death lol.

Its critiques and negatives are pretty widely available online, so balancing that out some with people who liked it is worth looking into I'd say.

    I still have good memories of it(though some fights felt really cheap forcing you to abuse that dna-ultimate attack) and would love to come back to it. But my main issue is that I built the town and had everything in place, but took me hours, days, weeks, MONTHS of my time to reach that. This game is absolutely fun to play but takes too goddamn long to reach something and when you finally do, your digimon dies, starting all over again.

      There’s a Japanese-only Digimon World called ReDigitize, it has a PSP version and a 3DS version with more content. I think both have English fan translation patches, if you’re willing to mess with emulation and all of that it might be worth looking into. It’s one I haven’t played yet. If that’s more than you’re willing to do this one is basically your only option. There are other Digimon “World” games on the PS1, but they don’t play like this one and the original do.
      There are other Digimon games I'd recommend overall, like Digimon World DS or the new Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth games. But they're more traditional JRPGs so they don't give the same experience.

    First time I picked up this game, I put it right back down and took it back to Game Stop the next week 💀 but Once I learned the specific spots to train at certain levels, and at certain evolution stages, this game became so fun and simple and I couldn’t believe I ever gave up on it. I’ve played it all the way through twice now and intend on playing through it again real soon.
    That being said, however, I could easily pick it apart for how unnecessarily complex the gameplay is. The love for this game is limited by the fact that casual gamers cannot simply pick it up and start playing without some sort of guide. I don’t think games should be designed that way.

    The number one thing I have beef with this game on is that they don't correlate digimon Levels and and evolutions, so finding those places to grind is real hard, and not intuitive. So you have to like, sneak past a weirdly strong Koromon, to then fight a weirdly weak Birdramon, and it feels like a game I had to play with a guide open, and couldn't just intuit where to go. I love all of the QoL it gives for the World subseries, but it wore me down with the grind. Maybe I'll play it again one of these days, and like you, have a different read on it, but the thing that changed your mind and made you have fun with it, is the thing that made me mad, and stop having fun with it.
    Great video, here's hoping we get some crumbs for the next Story game soon.

    12:15 wanna know an easy way to not only fix it but also make the game better overall? outside battle abilities, specifically traversal abilities. what if you could ride a digimon to walk faster? or reach higher places? what about flight and floating abilities that could let your digimon carry you over unwalkable terrain? maybe a surf like ability that lets you go through a lake. and so on.
    that could also make getting certain types of digimon more interesting. what if instead of digimon, you get tools that let you do that, so you could still use no matter the digimon you have. imagine if the tool could let you "store" a digimon you unlocked as a skin, maybe do both, with early on, areas being locked until you get a flying capable (at least adult) digimon, and after a while you unlock a tool that will let you do it no matter the digimon you have. same for mounting, so you could always have a faster run for certain maps.
    there could be an area that is involved in darkness that would require a holy digimon to cleanse, or a hot area that you could either bring an ice or water type monster that would help you go through it.

    I kinda love this game, but I also hate that my digimon dies over time. Its just so much unnecessary grinding when you have 2 digimons and their lifetimes does not match up. At the start of my game I run with 2 Ultimate/Mega levels for a good amount of time and have fun, around the end game i maybe have 1-3 ingame days before one of my digimons die and I have to train it up again. And when that one is up around Ultimate level, then my other digimon dies of old age and I can start over with that one as well, spending maybe 12-14 days on training and 1-7 days on game progress, over and over again.
    If they made some changes to the training hall in the city, like a heavy money/bit cost for using the training hall and reduce the attributes gained after each battle by 75-90% and then only let my digimons die when they lose a fight (maybe give each of them 3 lives, like in the first game, so the surprice EXE on a lost fight, still can pop-up from time to time). That would be more worth of my time.
    I like the story, but never really cared much about it after I beat the last Machinedramon. To much running back and forth, too much waiting, way too much talking and very little action. But the game has many other really nice things to offer except from the story and I think it is a shame, that much of my experience with it, dies little by little along with my digimons, over and over again.

  • @Otterpawp

    I agree, this game can be the best Digimon game you've played if you know a few things ahead of time (like areas to grind). It's a very charming game, especially to fans of the original style of digimon which was training them to do well and letting them go ham in battle with little to no input from you as the trainer. Great review.

      So the hard truth is that even the best Digimon games are just decent at best. I’d point toward Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, it’s a JRPG with some passing resemblances to SMT. After that I’d probably shout out Next Order or even just grabbing one of the v-pet toys since they’re neat and novel.
      It’s the kind of franchise where there’s a lot of bad games to get in on, but if you wind up endeared to the series they become more tolerable. I wish I could sing higher praise but it is what it is haha.

      @@DrScottnik To add to this, the game that tends to be remembered most fondly is the original Digimon World back on the PS1, which is riddled with:
      An overall very poor translation
      A looot of auto battling
      Rigged training where sometimes you'll just fail no matter how well you play the Bonus Try (slots will intentionally keep going half a second after you press X, quite literally if it *feels like it*)
      Some evolutions have esoteric requirements (I seem to recall that having zero battles is one of the requirements for HerculesKabuterimon, a high level monster)
      There's a handful of game halting bugs like the jukebox that crashes the game in the NA release, a ToyAgumon that repeatedly talks to you but fails to start a battle as it should, there's one map you can walk off of completely if you try hard enough, etc...
      But because it was a part of quite a few childhoods (mine, at least), it's a game I find myself not actually having a problem coming back to from time to time.
      Digimon World DS/Dawn/Dusk are probably the most well-put-together, if you can stomach the high battle frequency, but I'd agree with Mykonos, Cyber Sleuth is probably the best you're gonna get.
