  • The Steam Deck is my favourite gaming device possibly of all time. But there are some things it lacks. The GPD Win Max is super affordable in 2023, and still has loads of real-world use-cases. I love both devices! Here is how I use both the Steam Deck and the GPD Win Max!

what are your favourite combos if you own more than one gaming handheld? I'm so hoping the Steam Deck and the Retroid Flip will be a good combo in the coming months for me!

im quintuple dipping with daily carry of a Steam deck/Switch/OnexplayerS/Ipadpro/RP3+(Current android console choice rn). Steam deck for anything that works, One X for games for windows and anticheat enabled games ect, switch for its exclusives, ipad pro for music/video and some exclusives and the rp3+ for some ps2 and lower games to keep deck space for steam games and ps3 and above.

I have the Win Max 2021 and my brother has the SteamDeck. The SteamDeck is Great but the bigger screen makes me prefer the Win Max.

I’m working through some solo campaign stuff on my Steam Deck at the moment - Detroit: Become Human and the Batman games - so that might take a few weeks! When I play online I really love shooters like Cod and Fortnite 😁

Might be a bougie take but i use my GPD Win Max 2 as my everything PC (gaming st home connected ro an EGPU, work computer, personal computer, and gaming in bed), and i use a GPD win 3 (soon Win 4 on order) for travel gaming when on long trips or vosiring friends or on my commute to and back from work. I tried using the Max 2 for the commute gaming, but its too big to pull out on the metro and safely put back in.

It’s just a decal sticker unfortunately! But I think if you apply them right you can get some really nice results - and in any design you like 😁

Can you send a link to your stick caps of your Win Max please? With my caps the range of movement becomes restricted. I also have the Steam deck. But I mainly use my Win Max 2021 (i7 CPU with 1 TB SSD). It cost less than €500. I prefer it because of Windows and because it gives you a lot more options like Xbox Game Pass, my GOG library, my Retrobat frontend...I don't like Linux for gaming. The Win Max only has advantages... It has enough connections for card readers and USB sticks. The Steam Deck doesn't have a single one. You need a dock for that. The Win Max has a much better build quality and it's also handier and much more practical with the keyboard. Most of my stuff doesn't run on my Steam Deck and everything is insanely awkward. And I don't want any cumbersome workarounds or any alternatives. I want to be able to use my stuff.
Since I have my largest collection of games on my Xbox and use Xbox Game Pass, it's especially important that I can also use it on my handheld. Because I play on the Series X and on the Win Max I can continue to play the same savestate. I have my PC games collection at GOG, since it is not copy-protected and I have everything on an external hard drive. My RetroFrontend is Retrobat. I have my entire retro games collection there. I can hardly use anything on the Steam deck.

I don’t have the exact link I’m afraid, but I think the brand for the rubber covers was Skull & Co. They had the option of a lighter or darker colour and seemed to be thinner than other brands.

It’s definitely worth the money if you don’t own a mid tier pc or current gen console other than that, not worth upgrading.

      I don't think it's apost to be a "Upgrade", just a on-the-go option.

Very good video with a good comparison, but I don't quite agree with some of the arguments.
Linux is limited. I disagree, I've been using Windows, Mac Os and Linux for a decade. For a long time I personally have problems with Windows, and what Microsoft is trying to impose on users. Linux, on the other hand, is complete freedom. You can literally customize everything. From the appearance, programs, settings under the hood to security. The system does not spy at every step, has no built-in telemetry, and respects your privacy.
There is also a lot of different programs for Linux, etc. For example, steamdeck has a brilliant emudeck, and decky loader. Not to mention other things that the community has done, and what it can do in the near future.
Many people also use Linux professionally. So the argumentt Linux is limited might have made sense a decade ago, but not now. It's such a damaging stereotype.
The argument that some games don't run on Linux is partially true. On Windows from Windows 10 Version 1903 ( 19H1 ) up to Windows 11 there is a problem with running older games. Examples include Syberia, Deserd Law, RC Cars, Rayman Great Escape, Robin Hood Legends of Sherwood, Max Payne, and lots of older games.
On Linux, however, I had no problems with these games running. Also, there are a lot of useful tools that make it easier to run games like botles, not to mention the different proton variations. Heroic games launcher, Lutrius also make installing, launching and managing games much easier. Various distributions have also been created that facilitate playing on linux, including The Nobara Project, ChimeraOS, PikaOS, Regata OS etc.
Linux has changed a lot, and is no longer just a system for nobs sitting in the dark at night. Compiling everything, and using only a terminal without a graphical environment. This is my humble opinion on this topic.

Great insight, thanks so much for sharing 😊 yes I definitely need to get more into the Linux OS - prior to the steam deck all I had was a Ubuntu netbook about ten years ago. Definitely a lot has changed and evolved.
For my main OS I moved away from Windows to mac in 2011, because of all the reasons you listed. I’ve come back to windows (partially) now I’m getting more into gaming again, and it’s been… a whole learning curve haha

@@Emily_Lowrey Yeah, Mac Os has its advantages. However, I have been using Linux more for several years. In addition to Linux, I use both old Windows 10, which will lose support in 2025, and Windows 11.
And speaking of Mac OS, I don't know if you used the brilliant OpenEmu for emulation 😀.

Steam deck no good for emulating old computers such as amiga, atari st n or many more serious pc gamed with depth because theres no built in keyboard. Thats why id never go for the deck style handhelds, and if you add sd card to win max 2023 you get 5tb of ganes in pocket!!!!! 2x nvme at 2tb each and 1tb sd card. Decks also way lower fps on many games from tests ive seen.

Overwatch 2, minecraft and drone simulator works perfectly fine on Linux and steam deck, actually on ow you get better performance and for minecraft you have more options. Also saying Linux is very limited compared to windows is false, linux can run most of the windows programs using wine and because of its open source nature you have so much freedom, options and alternatives, that windows doesnt provide. Its sounds, that you simply dont have any experience with Linux tbh?

I did say, numerous times in the video, and my dedicated Win Max review video, that I know it’s possible it just needs more faffing and workarounds. I am well aware you can, I just would rather have something that works out of the box 😊 can’t wait for the ROG Ally!
And as for Linux in general I’m definitely speaking as an average user. I’d love to learn more about its capabilities. But I doubt the steam deck would be an ideal medium for that as I don’t want to keep it docked or in desktop mode.

Xbox Games Pass works not native. Linux is very limited. On Windows EVERYTHING runs out of the box. On Linux most of my most important things does not run.....Retrobat on my external SSD, Xbox Game Pass, all my Software, my controller-software, most of my games (300 games GOG libary). Nobody wants workarounds or alternatives. And for most of the problems with my Steam Deck there is no workaround becouse it's not Windows.
