Why I'm still OBSESSED with the GPD Win Max in 2023

- The Win Max 2020 is still an exciting device in 2023. It might not be as powerful as some of the newer versions, but it is affordable, small, and packs a surprising punch! Here are my thoughts on the GPD Win Max in 2023!

What do you think? Is the Win Max worth it if you can get it at a good price?? And yay! We can now play Halo Masterchief multiplayer on steam deck… finally!
The 7840U version is currently the only one I'd be interested in getting. But, I'm willing to wait for the 8050 version with the higher core count on both cpu and graphics.
In my opinion, it was the most comfortable handheld I've ever owned. I loved lying in bed, with the bottom of the device resting on my abdomen, but also my hands always just felt like they were resting comfortably on the device itself, and all gaming buttons and sticks felt they were all easy to reach. I played all of RE7 for the first on it and was actually surprised how well I could play "some" modern games on it.
That's why I'm really excited for the Win Max Mini, because I'm hoping for a similar experience, because I tried the Win Max 2, and I wanted to love it, but it was just "too bulky" but that's just my opinion.
@@jar768jakesweet I want bulky and small but mini is way too small for proper gaming. The win max 2 2023 edition is coming out soon in UK so I'll be grabbing that.
I just pulled the trigger last night and bought one on ebay for $429US, probably something about your 400£ range. I'm really glad I saw your video. Well done!
I've lately been diverting my tech investments from the "big bad" ultra-stationary devices to "going portable" and the Win Max 2020 is a very nice compromise on the form factor without compromise on power (for what I'm looking for, anyway.)
My use for Minecraft mainly, but also retro console gaming, plus typical PC use can be easily accomplished with this device. I've had the OG GPD Pocket - the one that started it all - for about 4 years now so I've been watching the brand quite closely. And being impressed with it on each new device being released.
I was considering the Steam Deck being that it IS still a Linux based portable PC, but the hoops to jump through to get to the productivity side of things, I just don't know how practical it is on that side of things.
But... Now I'm getting something I can really use for everything I need right off the bat and all that connectivity is a major advantage! (For comparison, the OG GPD has only one USB 3.0 A port, 1 USB C - mainly for power - and a mini- or micro-HDMI port. Oh, and a MicroSD card slot.)
So, since I have a 55" TV for all my "mainstream" PC and non-potable gaming at home, this is a perfect device for on-the-go use and easy to put away securely and not have some big PC easily detectable for being a theft magnet in case of break-in.
For those who might not live in the MOST secure locations of the world.
I love mine too. Got a Loki max as well they get the jobs done
I own a steam deck and a first gen winmax and while i love my stream deck the winmax is what i take with me everyday because its just realy useful for work. its an amazing machine.
We are glad that we found your channel. My best friend said that the three of us should form a gaming trio and all play a game together
I'm an avid Win 2 user who wanted a Win Max but couldn't justify the price so I'm just glad that there are others that could but for now I'm sticking with my 2 (Though the Win Mini is coming out and I am thoroughly excited for that)
I am super excited about that - I love the smaller form factor! Though I’m not sure if the new Mini will be a bit TOO small… but I am very much intrigued!
@@Emily_Lowrey Yeah super excited but as a Win 2 user I was worried it might be too big because it will be slightly larger than the 2 which would make it even less pocketable than it already was which would fit in most of my pockets but many of them where just barely and not particularly comfortably
First time here and wanna say good work! The content, video/ Audio quality, everything is top notch. Subscribed.
Thanks so much ☺️
I have a steam deck but I still love my win max and use it primarily for mmos.
This handheld PC is amazing! It is kind of like the original DS and a Laptop combined in one. Me and my best friend have great memories playing Mario Kart on the DS and Wii
It is! I love Mario Kart, you can lose hours with friends on that game!
I love your video. In fact I adore it. The GPD Win Max is older now but you still use it. You stated the price and why you bought it and talked about everything based on your use cases for the device. I haven’t even heard of the fpv drone simulator as a use case but i have now. This is not an indepth review or video like that from Eta prime or the Phawx or from Retro Game Corps or Gamers Nexus with all the benchmarks and numbers that I adore but somepeople find boring. but a video that talks about your use cases, why you have the device and why you love it. Thumps us ❤
Thanks so much ☺️
Omg I was thinking about this or the max 2 bc my favorite game is overwatch. Realized it doesn’t run normally on steam desk and doesn’t have a keyboard and I already have overwatch on my switch but prefer mouse and keyboard so don’t really play on console. And you first mentioned overwatch! This is a great video 😊
Was somewhat curious about the device. Great talking points! Great video
Thanks so much! I really love the form factor it’s so handy
I have the AMD 2021 edition and I still love it; I bought it brand new at a price I simply couldn't say no. I wanted to get a Steam Deck but unfortunately Valve still don't sell it were I live and I'm not willing to pay scalper prices on the internet for it. Now I'm keeping my eyes on the Legion play go if the price is right like the Asus ROG Ally. The other Chinese devise are simply out of the question for me because their to expencive and others like The Ambernic Win 600 are very underpowered.
Really great video! How much do you use one or the other? Which one gets the most use? Thanks!
handheld PCs truly are magical
Well made. The win max looks so fun.
What a great video!!!! Thank you so much
"The Steam Deck is a gateway drug to handhelds." YES!
I love this channel so much! please make more gaming content. maybe a top 10 of your fav games?
Thanks so much! I definitely will ☺️ I have plenty coming up - “good battery AND good graphics on the steam deck” “favourite party/multiplayer games list” maybe a playtime count down of my faves!
gpd win mini would be my fav device
does it work with the rokid max glasses? I like using the max with my pc, but it's a heavy gaming laptop... would like to go to cafe/library more with it.
What JoyStick caps are you using? Do they affect the screen closing at all?
I see that you're using some kind of caps for the analog sticks. Where did you find those? Thanks!
They're the same ones that you can use on the Switch. Just amazon basic ones but they really help the experience I think!
Hi can i ask how many frames you get on ow2? I love playing ow n if i could do it on the go in places with good wifi might push me to just get this device esp for the prices its going for now
On this device, 30 frames. It isn’t the most powerful in the world but it is really handy and so many features for the price!
I'd say at the price you got it for is a very decent purchase, I had the win max and it was a great device I've up to this point owned all the gpd devices they are all great but the win max itself is special because it's both gaming and a potable pc in one which the others aren't. Great video btw and it's worth having the win max and the deck better to have options I say lol
Funny you should say that, my next video is about owning both and why! Haha thanks so much for watching and commenting 😊
@@Emily_Lowrey that's good and no worries at all :)
I'm looking forward to the Win Mini myself. I had a Win 2 but I ended up getting put off by it's lack of power. A pocketable pc with the power of the Win Max 2 2023?
Where do i get / download games for this ? im not a gamer and just got the winmax , but ive tried steam os and it never works correctly.
I like that this version is smaller than the Max 2, I wish they’d have kept this form factor tbh
Same, I love the spec of the newer version but it is 10” I think? Much more like a traditional laptop. This one is tiny!
I can’t find anyone that’ll take 400 squids for a gpd win max 2021
now win max 2 have launch hope u can upgrade it
Oh boy I've wanted something like this for ages. Now I have to buy it...
Would you say this is also a decent purchase to use as more of a tiny laptop that can also game than vice versa?
Definitely! The keyboard is a little small and takes some getting used to, but it’s no harder than say an iPad folio keyboard.
You can 100% use this as a laptop, and with the usb c and full sized hdmi connections you can easily dock it as well so best of both worlds 😁
Also, because it’s built for gaming, the cooling system is insanely good, and for every day tasks the battery life is crazy!
@@Emily_Lowrey Awesome! Thanks so much.
My battery died on my Win Max 😅
Do the win max controls work with the fpv sim?
Plugging in the dji fpv controller via usb is the best way. The built in controls would not have enough accuracy imo as the fpv controllers have longer sticks for more precise movements. But I reckon you could map them inside the game (I use liftoff) if you wanted to try it 😊
Is this the same size as the upcoming GPD Win Mini?
This one is much smaller as far as i know - they got bigger after this model
@@Emily_Lowrey Thanks!!
I mean, this is cool but Im getting the winmax 2, since eGPU and I hate intel.
what thumb pads are those?
They are for the switch, a third party manufacturer I found on Amazon. I don’t have the link any more unfortunately but they’re a distinctive lighter colour so if you search for it you might be able to find it 😊
@@Emily_Lowrey thanks for the reply. I think I found them.
Could you share the link? Thanks! @@jasweb147
I have a gpd win max and I love it but I also have a gpd win 3 but the screen is so small
