Mike Long claims to have caught hundreds of bass over 10 pounds, 75 over 15, and one over 20, the ninth largest bass ever caught!
He has been heralded as one of the pioneers of big bait (swimbait) fishing, attributing most of the aforementioned catches to big rainbow trout-imitating baits. His big bass photos have been circulated all over the world, across the covers of over 40 magazines - even gracing billboards along the highways of America’s heartland.
He uses a large treble hook on a drop shot rig, seeks out big female bass that are in their spawning cycle in the clear-water reservoirs of San Diego County and sets the hook into their side as they swim between him and his snagging rig.
This video catches Long red-handed, deliberately attempting to snag bass over the course of two Springs in San Diego.
But snagging bass is just one of the dirty tricks he’s used to fool everyone into thinking he’s one of the best big bass anglers that ever lived.

Not quite, because on a foul hooking the fish actually went for a bait and either missed it or the hookset missed and got the fish while swimming away. This guy is using the same technique I use to snatch hook mullet for bait when there’s large schools around but too far away for me to cast net.

I keep a jig with the hook broken off to get them worked up to switch with a good one once they are ready.

Agreed! Kudos for sure. I'd never heard of "snagging" until now. Never really thought about fishing any other way that traditional hook/lure, line, rod, and reel. I'm not a big fan of bow fishing. I really don't like it. To each his own, but I don't like it. But as far as "snagging" a fish, I never thought of that. Maybe I'm just naive, but evidently it is definitely a thing... and a thing that some people do.

@@poysunivey yeah, I have a friend up in the Northeast who bow fishes carp. And it's cool... I just don't have any interest in it. I'm sure it has its challenges. I'm not a hunter either, so bows and guns aren't my thing. I hunted a very little bit when I was a kid, but not much. Honestly, watching my uncle skin and clean a deer at 6 years old kinda turned me off. Which is weird because I've cleaned at least 1000 catfish in my life, as well as a few other fish... but I grew up catfishing the James River in Virginia, and it was normal to catch 75-100 cats in a weekend back then. I ate ALOT of catfish growing up, lol. But I think it had something to do with the flesh and tissue of an "animal" that threw me. I know, I know... I eat beef, venison, lamb, etc... I can't explain it. Now I'll do what I have to do if the crap hits the fan and all of this "establishment" comes crumbling down and the only way to survive is to hunt. Lol, but I'll definitely fish first 😂. Anyway, I'm not knocking those who bowfish... it just doesn't interest me personally. As long as you ain't snagging fish in tournaments, and then planting fish to make the limit and more weight... then you're OK in my book. Peace my friend! ✌️🙏😝

He's not the only one by a long shot. In North Carolina there is a "team trail" that one team won 70% of the events for 2 years in a row. The team was caught seining farm ponds and using fish cages to store their fish until the event. Both members were banned. They just started fishing in another state.

The old adage is , " if one particular individual or one particular team win to often then cheating is going on on some level " , I knew this one guy who was big in to bow fishing tournaments and he would complain that this one team would always win and he didnt know how , I told they were cheating , he was like how can you cheat at bow fishing , I said easy , go to the area your going to fish a few days before the tournament and " bait " the area up with corn or dog food , ........ after I told him that he was like ..... damm I never thought of that.

You can tell he's been doing this for YEARS . . . look how refined his 'technique' is. Those are NOT hook sets that you'd see from someone who just saw their bait being eaten. They are quick 'flicks' to just 'hang-nail' the fish. Then notice how he backs way off on the pressure (maybe even thumbs the spool in free-spool) . . . and slowly drags (or gets dragged) the fish out to deeper water. He barely puts enough pressure on them so the weighted treble doesn't rip out, or shake-out on a jump, and just wears them out. It sure ain't this cats first rodeo. . . . that my friends is a professional cheater (and criminal) caught red-handed. Kudos to Kellen for the commitment and dedication compiling all the footage and a great article. A very sad day for bass fishing . . . hopefully in some way there can be some positivity that comes out of all this moving forward. I'm also glad there is closure for all those involved and affected by this yoyo.

as a bass club founder and a club officer of many different positions over 35 years i can say that cheating for a $20 pot or for just bragging rights happens all the time. even resigned after 20 years as sec/treas over fellow officers or tournament directors refusing to do anything to their buddies even with multiple witnesses coming forward. if a buck or trophy involved someone will cheat. sad is it not??

My son was fishing the back of a cove at our local lake and got hung up on something so he decided to dive in and retrieve his lure. He discovered his lure was hung on a bass cage with three big bass in it. There’s no end to what cheaters will do to win a tournament.

One of those bass was out of the water for a full 5 minutes. Lands it at 5:50 & released at 10:53. He put it back in the net for 30 seconds about a minute or two before he released it while he set up for his final pic shot.

Back when Mike Long "caught" the record bass at Lake Dixon, he had to take a polygraph in order to verify he had not used any illegal means to catch the fish and win a tournament. He failed the polygraph, and confessed to the polygraph examiner that he had in fact used illegal means to catch that record fish. The polygraph results and confession were submitted to the tournament organizers.

GREAT WORK!!! This AND your detailed article about his entire "career" of cheating & lying needs to be seen by everyone, not just bass anglers. I don't care if anyone believes me or not, but there was something about Mike Long's looks & demeanor I NEVER liked, even way back when he first became "nationally famous".........I couldn't put my finger on it, but so help me, my spidey senses spiked every time I saw this low-life SOB on video or pix & articles in bass fishing magazines. All that time, I couldn't explain or understand "why", but I just didn't like this bastard. This isn't the first time my gut telling me that a certain person is a low-life scumbag, turned out to be right. He should be BANNED from all forms of fishing nation-wide, forced to pay back all of his tournament winnings & all contracts & endorsements cancelled, and especially rescind ALL of his so-called "lake record bass catches". The straw that broke the camel's back is when he intimidated, threatened to harm, and literally stalked a 13 year old boy & his father in and around their very own home at night on multiple occasions, simply because they caught Mike Long red-handed with large live bass in a tank, right beside his boat in his garage, only a day before a tournament that he would win with those very fish. Not to mention the fact he loosened the lugnuts on the boat trailer and truck of at least several different people, resulting in those boat trailer wheels falling off, and nearly falling off of the truck while it was being driven. All of these people had ratted Mike Long out for his repeated cheating in tournaments. THAT is attempted murder!!!

But for me personally, I've been turned off by tournament bass fishing ever since I was a teenager, and I'm 60 now. But that's just me. To each his own. Trying to win money while bass fishing just goes against the whole point of bass fishing, in my book.
And his name still remains in the books of some of our lakes as the record holder. At least it still did long after his "outing" by Kellen. That is so wrong. It still punishes the REAL anglers.

Yeah, especially the whole thing with him trying to threaten a 13 year old boy, asking where he slept and shit. All cause the kid saw 2 big bass he planned on cheating with later. Im surprised he hasnt been pursued legally with all that there is about him. The walleye cheaters got 10 days of jail and a year and a half of probation over it.

I think what bothered me most about this video was the way he took a picture with the fish. How he bent his knees with his legs close together looked like some random drunk girl outside the bar pissing in the parking lot trying to hide behind a car door.

the fish don't care about being caught in the spawn.. but yes don't snag fish on purpose on the side of the face.. though it does happen when you fish legit.. when using some baits because some baits like jerk baits ect have 2-3 treble hooks on them and sometimes it hooks the bass in other places but to do it on purpose is not sporting.. that's why its illegal.. sporting is to trick the fish into biting your bait.
also for records, there is a strict rule.. not even if its an accident if the fish is snagged it doesn't count at least one hook has to be in its mouth to be a legit catch for a record... and he has many records....

The outside of a big bass's head is really hard, and that treble hook doesn't always set that well. Sure, you can play the fish and wear them down until they're practically dead, but when your anxiety is peaking all you can see is that treble hook flying out and your Instagram shot going to hell. Huge kudos to SDFish for catching this pivotal moment in my fishing career.

If you read the linked article, there is a photo on the last page showing the camera setup. He's a long way up on a hillside using a long-lens (or whatever it's called) to get the footage. The camera's even wrapped in camo, so I'm sure it would be hard to see from such a distance.

For those wondering, he is throwing a giant treble hook with a white mister twister double tail grub. The mister twister is only on there so he can see where his hook is in the water, and also it acts as an excuse to get out of trouble if anyone catches him (throwing a bare treble hook would be too obvious).
Bingo , a bare hook is snagging , some feathers or a rubber skirt is a lure in the eyes of the law , even though we Fisherman know what the fuk is really going on ....

I read the article. It's a mister twister double tail grub on a dropshot with a massive treble hook.
The double tail grub is to cover up the fact that he is snagging fish (a bare treble hook would be too obvious), and to add some attraction to increase his chances of snagging a fish
But he hooked it in the mouth, at least the first one. What’s the difference in what he did and setting the hook on a spawner using a 8 “ lizard on a 6/0 gamagatsu. How do we know the first bass didn’t bite the mister twister he was using

We always free-lined trebles @ Perry’s lake to catch shad then chuck it back to get a bass, this guy.... goes so far to even disguise it with curly tails shame shame....!
