This is the longest horizontal lathe in the World? It is used for machining direct driven propeller shafts for very, very big ships.Here you can see only 15m (49 ft) of the total length of 36m (118 ft) being utilized.

things like this were commonplace when I was an apprentice The biggest one we had a 78 ft bed 6 foot +swing and an 8 ft faceplate with adjustble jaws.
It was made in Glasgow by Langs in 1908. you rode on the toolpost!!
We also had a huge Herbert verticle borer with the 50ft dia bed at floor level that was made about 1925.
The more new stuff included a Krupp twin headed miller the head posts could be adjusted from 12 ft apart to 40ft. Most of this gear was for machining steam turbine rotors and other power station equipment.
The main machine shop was 1/3 of a mile long 180ft wide and 120 ft high.
There was a OH crane track at 75 ft with 4 150 ton cranes running on it.
Yep you are correct. I remember walking through Vickers Ruwolt Engineering in Melbourne Australia in the 70’s and they had a massive lathe there. It swung an 8 metre faceplate and the bed was at least 50 metres long. The carriage was the operators armoured glass cockpit. Vickers did a lot of ship drive shaft work back then.

It was Metropolitan Vickers I worked for. Engineering on a massive scale.
Would loved to had seen the manufacturing of that lathe in 1908, of course I would have loved to see the Great Pyramid being built, too.
@@markmark2080 Langs made many specialist machines for use in the shipbuilding industry. Massive propeller shafts for example.

Making parts - to build a bigger lathe
That is indeed a very large lathe but I have stood in front of one much, much larger. IIRC, it was in Long Beach CA. The ways were a specially ground crane rail upon which the tailstock tooling and carriage rode. The ways were ridiculously long, I believe some 160', had a hundred ton+ bridge crane for tooling changes and stock placement. The chuck was 27 FEET in diameter. The operator rode on the carriage and the cutting bits were 12 inches square x several feet long. I do not recall with certainty whether they used carbide inserts. This was in 1977, I was an engineering student, and was duly impressed.
That's an 80" Skoda. I used to run one when I worked at General Electric in Chicago. Ours was 37' long. you can add as many bed sections as you want. We retro-fitted our machine to CNC. What a joy to run! She really Rock's & Rolls! The MG sets got eliminated and we used a G.E. DV-300 for the spindle drive. The MG sets made ALOT of noise.

It's an 80" Skoda with lots of bedway sections! Lotsa Fun!

And you're not overworking the lathe with heavy cuts! This decreases the amount of heat generated which causes destruction.

+Axel Fibro ...Yes, one of my jobs..I was a welder in machine shop here in Sacramento, Calif...did a good amount of stuff from ships....we had a fair sized lathe...Niles...about 90-100" swing and about 50 foot long capacity...carriage had a seat for you while you traveled along....
@@axelfibro2535 this 4x4 made of wood? weight 10 pound, for weight correction, or just for the crazy sound.. we used rings of wool to reduce the noise and high freq vibrations...
I'm pretty sure I've seen a bigger one on an industrial steel billet manufacturing documentary, iirc it was about the same length but several times larger diameter capacity. I could be remembering wrong though so if anyone else has seen/heard of this let me know.
axel. take a trip to england and visit sheffield forgemasters or BAE systems. the guys there would use this lathe to make chop sticks on. nice lathe all the same.

I work in the heavy foundry at Forgemasters, We regularly make large presses that take up to 580tonnes of molten steel, I've also seen some huge forgings in the lathes in the South Machine shop too! :)
I have worked many times on a 45 foot lathe. It’s stressful at first then it seems to shrink down to a normal sized lathe.
Yes, I used to see that stuff in the used equipment news, swing 312", length, 225 Feet..

Lets say I had a shitload of money and wanted to buy this: how much work would be be involved in transporting and moving a mammoth piece of machinary like this? Most semi trucks here in canada max out around 52 feet long. I see it was for sale at one point.
Another big lathe, although very specialized, is made ny BOST tools, for machining the big Wartzilla crankshafts. Nice videos on here somewhere, Cranks are 7-8 feet in diameter, 50+ feet long.

actually , my old company had an Lathe, with 7 meter diameter, depend on the clamping disk, 12meter long support, with 2 thread and 1 turning spindle, this Item was moveable trough the hall, max lenght for the support 70meters. They made the main Poletreats for the Olympic Stadium in munic. ( the Tent-Style-Poles)
wow i wonder how long it takes to turn a large crankshaft or cam shaft on one of these largest lathes.
And how many machining tools you go thru to make it. Amazing how big the size chuck is

My neighbor said in ww2 he worked on a driveshaft for a sub that was 202 feet long.he was on the carriage,he turned the tool holder in at the end of each cut and cut 100 thousandths ateach pass.He told some big stories but I found them all to be believable
I was under the impression the lathe at the Newport News Virginia ship yards is one of the longest in the world. Used to create propellor shafts for US Navy Aircraft carriers.
Does anybody knows something about a Meuser Lathe VIII S? They have built in famer times only one of these big machines. It goes to North America.

I think one hellova big lathe or grinding maschine has to be one machining the crankshafts for 2-Stroke engines. They are made in Japan, Korea and China?

It is the longest but not the biggest. The lathe I operate can handle a swing if 208 inches, supports the job with hydrostatic steady rests and can handle a work piece up to 300 ton. There's also another lathe in the shop that can handle 400 ton with a 150 inch swing and a job up to 70 feet long. The face plates on the lathes are 8 and 9 foot in diameter.

this might be the biggest now but the biggest in the world used to be on Vinalhaven maine and was used to make granite pillars. it was hundreds of feet long and would take a piece of granite ten feet by ten feet!!!

This is a modest Skoda lathe. In England we have huge lathes far bigger. I know because I use them.
In the late 1990's I worked for Crawford - Swift Ltd in Halifax, West Yorkshire. While I worked there the company won a contract with Stolt Comex Seaway to rebuild one of their lathes. The lathe had a twelve foot diameter chuck that was housed in a headstock weighing seventy tons, the bed was one hundred and twenty five feet long. The lathe was so large that it was partly disassembled into subassemblies to be transported to Halifax. Crawford - Swift only had two twenty five ton capacity overhead cranes which when used together wouldn't lift the headstock. The lathe subassemblies were taken to Hamnett's premisses about two miles from the C-S works for the rebuild because Hamnett's had two fifty ton capacity overhead cranes. The lathe was originally built in the U.S.A., it was used for machining ship building components. Now that was a large lathe.

It wasn't actually the meaning to start a "biggest lathe" -competition.
Thist lathe is located in Ukraine. It was delivered by Skoda in the end of 70's to a ship yard in Nikolayev, where it was used for turning the Propeller shafts of the aircraft carrier "Kiev".
I had the opportunity to visit this high security ship yard in Nikolayew a few years ago. They have amazing things there.

this is not the biggest, we build lathes for coustomers in the whole world and our last one had a diameter from 6 meters and about 15 meters high, but it is a vertical lathe, not horizontal

This is tiny. even 6000mm is tiny. You can find 1100" lenght, 150" swing lathes (horizontal, obviously) online in auctions. They use them to make rotary kiln OD's, shafts for larger things. Hydraulics. I can't post long URL's, but on youtube there's a larger lathe, and a knuth (new) product advertisement. This suggest my point. On google theres 20 of your lathes all producing the same shaft in parallel (not being assembled, actual usage). Vertical lathes even bigger; not just by their shear radius part, since this is expected from putting the part sideways. Overall actual size is more impressive. Like, the length of your lathe, on the radius of the part it can machine. Looks like a fucking house turning in a microwave.

The biggest? No... Look at some of the old Craven, Kramatorsk, Waldrich or Skoda Lathes.... They made some Machines up to 6000mm. Turning Diameter and a Distance near by 30(!) Meters... The Weight of allComponents adds up to 1100 To.
This is a Skoda and end up to 36 meters... Although I don't easily believe there would be such long lathe with 6m diameter ever built for the reason: For producing what it would be needed?

I think corrected already before, that this probably isn't the biggest in the diameter, but it is pretty close being the longest althoug.

The 17 Feet diameter of your lathe is a big number. This Skoda lathe is still the longest ever seen.
Actually, have you seen a carousel lathe doing 46 Feet diameter?
Such lathe is running in Brasil and was originally used for building a nuclear power plant.
And by coincedence the same company has a licence for Sulzer 2-stroke engines.

if you live in a former communist country, it wont be listed, these deals are negotiate privately, but any worker that visits the factory (which is probably abandoned) can see it. I've seen machines that can machine a basetball court, its width in height.
