To explain the opposite directions for the tread, you have to think about the direction of the force applied to the tire. With the rear, the force applied to the tread is facing to the rear of the bike as the power is coming from the bike. With the front, since it's unpowered, the force is applied due to braking and is coming from the front. So you want the tread to point in the direction of the force application to shed water properly.
so maybe apllied force changes so a reverse tread would aid in dry traction, but in wet conditions reverse tread will evacuate water towards the center of the tread.
what about water wicking though? i was always taught that you orient the tires so they will throw water away from the wheel to promote traction. so with the triangular pattern you see here, you want the point of the arrow to be the first part to hit the grought, so it will trouff the water away from the tire.
@@fairplayer916 Exactly. That's a good way to look at it, too. Also, think about what happens when the tire breaks traction, due to either braking (front) or acceleration (rear). You want the point of the triangle going opposite the direction the surface is moving under the tire. Sometimes it's hard to visualize from the perspective of the tire.
Over this last week I started doing research on getting my first bike, and when I stumbled across your channel your videos, and these navi series, have filled me with the Confidence to get my own first bike! Love the content bro
I think every diy motorcyclist has mounted a tire the wrong way at least once lol. Props for including it in the video. If you let your tires get hot in the sun or use a heat gun I’d hair dryer, it can help a ton
As someone who used to work on cars for a living it is totally understandable that you put the tire on wrong because you are learning how to replace tires. Even the pros will do this from time to time because they are in a hurry and not paying attention. But now that you know I'm pretty sure in the future you will check the tires to make sure they go the right direction.
Just did this swap on the rear tire of my Navi. I, too, need to apologize to my neighbors for my foul language as I struggled to get that tire on the rim. The City Grips are a great tire. Big difference! Thanks for the video!
I wanted to thank you Burch for this video and your other videos. We fitted up these same tires yesterday. They fit perfectly and are an improvement for sure. A quick tip is to loosen the rear exhaust bracket bolts so that the exhaust can be moved a little, and the rear tire slides right in.
Great video! It's gonna ride like a different bike now. My local cycle shop swapped both my Navi tires for $20. Gotta make friends with the service department, lol. The last tire I had mounted on a different bike at a local auto shop. They did it for $20 and even put the wheel on the bike for me. PA for the win!
I've done car, motorcycle, and scooter tires. I think sometimes small ones are harder. Hard to stand on them and use a tire iron. The first few times you do it, it's pretty slow, but you'll get faster. You did great! It might sound crazy, and certainly dangerous, but sometime you will run into a tire with a bead that is really hard to break. You can use a c-clamp or you can jack up one wheel on your car using a floor jack, and carefully lower the car onto the tire with a hard to break bead. 'Ya 'gotta be careful, 'ya don't want to die changing a tire.
Hey man! Any updates on these? Just bought my first bike, a Navi and I just don’t feel very planted on the stock tires. I wanna get these but was hoping you had an update how they worked out for you? Thanks!
4:41 you can’t go wrong with Michelin tires!! My 2021 Z900 RS café is running Michelin Road 6 after I got rid of the factory tires. You will not be disappointed with the Michelin!!
I remember my dad breaking the bead of car tires using the old school car jack. He'd jack the car up with the jack on the tire. This was back when people had dedicated winter tires. He'd swap them on/off each season. Balance them too with a bubble.
I use City Grip 2 tires on my XMax scooter. Good tire! You can put some tape on the tire spoons to keep from scratching your rims. Thanks for the video. 👍
I feel you on the rain man... lol I'm over in NOVA not too far away from there and same endless rain... just now able to get on an exhaust for my F900R Great video boss! I be going through all the uploads fast!
Good on you for admitting your mistake, in all honesty if you are fitting tyres for the first time an easy mistake to make. Your mistake should stop other inexperienced tyre fitters making the same error. As always a great video.
I have those tires but I don't have a new exhaust yet. I know you need a rear fender delete for them to fit, but will the stock exhaust get in the way or rub?
Awesome content! My Navi sometimes feels loose in the front end when going around corners. Do you think its the tires? Nothing else wrong with the bike. Only 550 miles on it.
Ok many people will have different explanations for the direct of tread, but its simple. the tread of a tire is designed to push water away from the center as it rolls through water which is where you bike spends most of it time for good contact to the road.
How would you combat the 3 linkage cables that were in the plastic front fender loop from rubbing on the tire? More so with the bigger front tire, hopefully there is enough clearance where your brake cables won't rub against the front tire.
I know this is a old video, but thought id leave a bit of advice. a bit of dish soap and water mix works awesome as a lube to bead, de-bead, and leak check.
Not sure if you caught on to this when mounting the tires but there is a divit inside the rim that is you drop center and that is where you want the part of the tire that is already mounted sitting when mounting the rest of the tire makes it way easier to mount the tire hope this info helps
Thanks man! Yea that’s what I meant when I said something along the lines of the tire being in the “skinniest part of the wheel” or however I worded it lol definitely makes sense in theory, but it took me awhile to realize I needed my knee reeaaally holding the tire down in that part of the wheel the entire time. Once I realized that it became much easier! Quite the learning experience for sure 😂🤘🏻

I feel more confident around turns because it holds the line better and has more grip, it feels more stable at higher speeds, I’ve even done light off-roading with these tires and been impressed. If you’re on the fence, I can’t recommend these enough!!
Can you do a video of a race between the Grom and the Navi before you let them go? Just a 100 yards or something haha. Would be cool to see the take off abilities in comparison.
I’ve been wanting to do a stock Navi vs modded Navi “race” for awhile, but I just don’t think it’ll happen before the bikes start going away 😔 Would definitely be sick to get the Grom in on it too though!
Just a suggestion, don’t let your brake drum hang by the lines when you do things like this. It puts stress on the fittings and the lines. We always just hook a little bungee cord or something in it and hang it back up on the handlebars just to keep the stress off everything. You live and you learn from experience! Love your vids!

If there’s anything I learned, it’s to use A LOT of windex or soap to keep things slippery, and make sure you really drive your knee into the tire to hold the part that’s already seated into the lowest point of the wheel as you work the tire around. The video that helped me most is linked in the description. Good luck dude!! 🤘🏻

they’ve all made that backwards tire install mistake once! Lol. But usually only wants to because doing the job twice sucks so bad we never want to make that mistake again.
Also, the audio levels between your microphone and the bass, heavy background track, super whack.
I got my volume up so I can hear you nice and clear, then your background music kicks in and blows out my woofers
At least it was the rear tire which is easier to remove 😄.
I love the optimism dude! Already got it swapped to the right direction! 😬🤘🏻
@@LifeOfBurch Does that mean we get a ride video coming soon? 👀
wow so sorry the design team made confusing tires. thats on michelin smh
Definitely a confusing design, but now that I know how it works, it makes sense I guess. Lesson learned for next time! 🤘🏻
The build quality of them Navi`s is not worth the Nonda brand.
I like how you have is facing the wall as if destruction a punishment I just purchased one that got injured on one accelerator raced right off the battery died down no starting the shipment I don't even know where to begin throwing me up and down hills into the ground racing off Willie and me as a disabled strange disgusting smells and so much more I've never hit 60 mi an hour with the stock tires when I tried to do with a 50 on the bed strip like kedzie Street in Chicago I became swept to the side of the curb and told throwing me up and down hills into the ground racing off Willie and me as a disabled strange disgusting smells and so much more I've never hit 60 miles an hour with the stock tires and when I tried to do with a 50 on the bed strip like kids extremely Chicago I became swept to the side of the curb and told nahh nahh. Not today I went to the attorney general on Honda for selling me a piece of s*** that a retailer in berrington Illinois and I'm waiting to hear word from him it's starting up but now when I hit the accelerator throttle on the right side it's cutting off and shutting off dying like someone's something is contaminating my bike and like it's refusing to go so I'm not riding my nav eye infection from the sell it and I love it or something to get rid of it another bike
Lol. Mistakes are only chances to learn Mike. Everyone has them. Huge props to you for posting this anyways. Keeps you real and down to earth.
Keep killing it brother. Well done!!
Edit: you know you will not melt in the rain right? 😂
Yea but like…where am I gonna ride in the rain?! I don’t have a job to ride to and anything worth doing in the rain is worth doing in a car. Although I do feel like I have to ride in the rain for a few hours just to feel what everyone felt coming to my meetup 😂😂😂
@@LifeOfBurch exactly!! Now go play in the puddles! Lol
Love your tattoo's
The Jankie life of Burch lol simple is the way to go.
Both tire are in the wrong position 🙊 🙁
Successful failure, as long as you learned from it. Which you did obviously!
I salute you for pronouncing “Navi” the correct way! It’s NOT Nah-vee, people! 😂🎉
