The first time I ever got on a bike I clutchless-upshifted from 1st to 2nd, knowing that it was possible. It felt amazing. Surprised myself during the Pre-Learners here in Australia. Now I do it all the time, even on softer acceleration - it's just so smooth.
It's 2am and I wanna try this on my bike now, haha
hahahaha
@@MotoJitsu Worked out really well! I'm surprised how smooth it felt too! Pretty keen on my limited license test so I can take it out on the road.
This is exactly me right now 😂
DUDE LITERALLY THE SAME
😂😂😂😂 factss
That is what I do in my semi-truck. It is called floating gears. It is very similar. As long the engine and axle speeds are in sync it will shift.
Neat, never knew you could do it on a truck.
Ya you can do it in any stick vehicle Ive ever driven.
Do You mean if I leave the accelerater and clutch and forward the gears or something else.
@@MotoJitsu Semi truck transmissions can be pretty forgiving so it's easy enough to learn on and becomes are pretty necessary skill when driving in the mountains. What you've shown in this video seems surprisingly easy. I figured it'd be a far more coordinated effort.
@@OpeoAslam This is also because the gears are a lot closer together. Hence why it's easier to float an 18 speed than a 10 speed.
You just made my life very easy, I was stressing about shifting and stuff and now I have this! Thank you
I was able to do this on my old stick shift car. Accidentally came across this on my bike(new rider). Had to look it up. Glad motojitsu popped up. It’s a good trick for fun or needful situations.
Outstanding, Fast Eddie! This exercise along with the throttle exercise will make a big difference for a good number of people. And if you are riding 2up, your passenger will love the smoothness. No helmet knocking. Lol.
Exactly!
You should never helmet knock no matter how you shift
@@tifthetif6567 you tell that to my girlfriend :)
Your channel and videos are great! You know just what to talk about and you explain it perfectly. Thanks!
Thanks! Over 300 videos to go through! Please consider sharing with others :)
My 2014 street triple clutch shifts were a little rough feeling, never could get a consistent smooth shift. Clutchless shifts helped a lot. So I got a quick shifter, and man does that simply/ smooth everything out.
That's one way of doing it.
Back when I was still practicing clutchless upshifts it felt like doing a magic trick, and it's so satisfyingly smooth that I upshift with the clutch only when I'm accelerating with just a tiny bit of throttle. No more little nudges while shifting under hard accelaration. I used to get false neutrals every now and then, but adjusting the position of the shift lever helped, and reversing the shift pattern helped even more (for my CBR 600 it was just a matter of flipping the shift rod linkage around), so if anyone else is having trouble getting this right consistently, I suggest trying one or both of those things.
Nice!
Is it fine for the bike and is it okay to do it at a higher rev?
+1 for flipping the shifter.
Im a new rider and I appreciate this.
Sweet!
Same here!
Thanks, Eddie and Semper Fi. This technique is incredible! Thank you.
thanks!
this is so cool, i used to do this all the time on my dirtbikes but i didn't know you could do it on street bikes... makes full sense tho. awesome vid
This is one of your videos that excites me about new capabilities👍🏼
lol thanks!
Never knew this and been having a blast with it, thanks a bunch 🙏
I'm old school, I love to use the clutch quick shifting is cool when you are in a hurry to arrive at a stop sign or a red light. Eddie show us this trick on your BMW ???
Can't my bike has shift assist...I don't use the clutch up or down shifting on the BMW at all.
I just discovered this on my street rod 750 and I love it thanks a lot bro feels like a whole new different bike
you're welcome! :)
I also have done it down shifting too don't like it too much but I've done it will that mess the bike up?
@@davidacevedo4511 you can do anything with the wrong technique and mess up the bike...I always use the clutch downshifting and upshifting too...unless I feel like speed shifting for fun or at the track.
Yea I'll jus stick to regular up shifting but have fun with it occasionally and no downshifting at all thx for the advice keep up the great vids!
Everything in your videos is sheer quality. Thank you sir.
Needed this, I feel like my upshifts are kind of jerky sometimes on my cbr250, notably when really laying into it. Gonna give this a shot riding home tonight. Thanks!
Awesome!
Update: it worked perfectly with everything except going 1 to 2, it would either get stuck in neutral or jerk back and forth pretty rough
Weird...a lot do with timing and what rpm you try it at. Maybe raise the rpm up more before next time.
This is amazing for getting up to highway speed thank you
thanks for the PSA! i need to try this
This is old school and all should practice it. Pure mechanical feel, actually you can sense when you go up with lever when is best time to push up or down. Actually when you cut of trottle you are releaving the gears of tension.
On my 1290 SD R i have quick shifter for up and down and MSR for slip regulation so it is easy and controlable action. You can concentrate on drivin fully. But old school is the shit, you have to know it.
Exactly!
MotoJitsu , keep preachin man , this is cool stuff for younger generations , it's like listening to myself. I would like to make videos but have no time . Todays bikes are full of tech and demanding 50% or less skill , no flex in frames, suspension is top, tires and brakes omg . I would love to see few youtubers that are full of shit on ...lets say Yamaha RD 350 from late 80's. That bike could handle todays 600's. If you got skills , you know.
I also like you love to take smaller cc bike just to piss people of . One time guy asked me " man you are flyin on that piece of shit, how do you do that?". ( i was on 95' Aprillia 250 - 2 stroke ). I told him that i have ordered Aprillia anti gravity cilinder under seat so that's why i can do that shit. And Millenial asked me how much that cost!!! Todays kids have their iphones ,wikipedia and other shit....wtf teachers teach them in school? Man .....
lol yup, all the skill of the rider, the bike is irrelevant ! Was fun riding the 390 around today...no one expects it when I take off and start hitting the corners lol
Great Video as Always Good info to know for us New Riders for sure.

I heard they make an adventure one too :) If it fits you, great. I'm sure it's for taller people.
Hi Fast Eddie!
I just to tried this and holy sh*t!!!!
I can't believe this existed. Haha
Thank you for previous comments earlier today. I tried at low rpm as well and it worked just fine.
Thank you again!
Awesome!! :)
Just tried it on my FZ6R. It works just like you say, but is not smooth (but clunky) than a full clutch shift. Also, works best for moderate acceleration. Requires more concentration and finesse to do it when going fast. It's novel, but at full acceleration, the traditional shift is solid/smoother if you just preload the clutch before shifting. I'll keep practicing at it.
Takes a while to make it smooth :)
Thank you so much for ur great videos , I'm a new Rider and ur skills are insane , really appreciate it 😊 👍👍👍🤙
You're welcome! ;) 350+ videos to go through
I tried this for the first time today from a slow curved on-ramp onto a highway merge to accelerate faster and it was sooooooo lovely🥰. Thanks again Greg
@@joygernautm6641 That's great!!! All about having the right timing..with practice you'll master it :)
You know, I've "accidently" gone from 4th to 5th gear when I went on the freeway once without using the clutch and I was thinking damn I'm gonna mess up the transmission lol
lol
I try to do this on my Vulcan 1600 Classic but there's a bigger difference between first and second than there is with the rest of the gears. I find that I get smoother results when I use the clutch between first and second whether I'm upshifting or down shifting. I can down shift without the clutch too as long as I let off of the throttle, pre-load the shifter, and blip the throttle down. I've heard that results also depend on the bike too.
Do as you wish...not necessary at all...just if you want to.
I have a Honda CBR600RR and my experience is similar to yours Bryant.
Thank you very much. This will help me to learn this technique.
You're welcome!
WOW...I never knew that.....very interesting..thanks for sharing.
Practice....it's faster shifting and makes a smooth ride if done right ;)
Well I prefer to shift from 1st to 2nd with the clutch. I've heard some guys say - it would be better - for the learning or doing - at 2nd to 3rd and up to the 6th gear, and the shifting part from 1st to 2nd always with the clutch.
Accidently I've it from 3rd to 4th gear - and then I realized I was shifting without the clutch.
But really nice video.
And guess what - I was training with a fresh new rider. He's got his driver license - well... his rider license - this month - and he is really a beginner. We did some basics. Stop and Go, a lot with the clutch and - really much talking about what could happen, and so on. It was soooo much fun today. And all the other bikers, who was passing by - had sooooo big eyes. Haha. It was a great day. And now he gained so much confidence in his bike and of course a lot self-confidence to ride. :)
If I'm not accelerating fast...I just shift normally. But I do each gear without the clutch if going quick...either way or not at all or all the time...all rider preference. Good job training with new rider!
Thanks. I gave him some advice from my experience on the road. It isn't that much as your experience - but for him it was ... like free gold. Sorry, I can't explain it better. Haha.
But he need to train more. And it is good to see, where my level of riding is. :)
Maybe you have in the next days a new subcriber from Austria, buddy. haha. :D
Maybe he'll discover my channel and get practicing White Belt :)
Nice video👍
If your clutch is almost fried and you are in the middle of nowhere, can this technique/another similar improvisation work to limp to the nearest civilization?
So, the slight pressure causes the shift lever to go up, or do u still have to press upwards also?
Wooow....never know this technique...tq bro
welcome
MotoJitsu.com for my app, books, etc.
You have so many stop lines over there, it would be weird coming from the UK where we prefer roundabouts. You must feel like you're constantly braking to a stop :-) Stop lines here are only really reserved for blind junctions with poor visibility (anything else is a give way but you can just roll through them without stopping if you can see that you can safely do so)
This is just by the beach...around the neighborhood.
I have a gsxr 750 2009 and I can quickshift but at lower revs it doesn’t shift as smoothly the bike does a bit of a jerk but when I’m going full throttle it’s smooth not sure if it’s the way I’m shifting or just an older bike
Is there any way to safely do this but shifting down? What should I do if my clutch cable snaps at highway speeds, for example?
This is a really awesome video.

Does clutchless up shifting ruin the gear box?
Good video, very informative. Thanks
You're welcome
Hi Eddie! I know that for downshifting is better to USE the clutch, but my question is if doing the downshifting on my motorcycle without the clutch, could at some point damage my motorcycle? I can ask to my mechanic but I also want your point of view on this. Thank you!
I never do it. I always use the clutch while downshifting.
So do you hit the gear up when u release off the throttle?
I used to think gear shifting without class was a lot of work, but today I saw no problem thanks.
👍🏼
Many riders will tell you clutchless upshifting will damage the gear box, is that true? Anywhere I can read about it?
Thanks and great explanation on the video!!
"many riders" have no idea what they're talking about. If done correctly, there's nothing wrong with it. Of course if you do it with poor technique with anything you could mess something up.

Yeah, that's why I normally don't ride around this neighborhood lol
I used to love up-shifting with out the clutch. I did the same light pressure on the shift lever and quick jolt on the throttle. Once i got the hang of it it on the throttle on how much on each gear it become smooth like butter.

Hi Greg, don't know if you still read these comments on a 2-year old video but you are the world-champion in responding to comments so I'll try my luck. I've learned this technique from this video and mastered it. Now I'm also considering getting a Tracer 900 GT (not the 2021) and read mixed reviews on the quick-shifter. So my question to you is: Do you consider the Tracer quick-shifter an upgrade to the speed-shifting technique or does it get in the way? Thanks for everything!
I reply to all comments :) The technology and standard quick shifters that come on bikes are awesome, this one included.
@@MotoJitsu That's what I needed to hear, thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks Eddie. Is this possible on all bikes? (I have sprint GT) Also can you do down shifting video? Do I need to rev match when you down shift like people say?
Yes, all bikes.
No, you don't need to rev match. I made a video talking about it.
I do it on 100 cc bike also..m
Great video!
Thanks!
Just tried this last night was fuckjng awesome thanks bro
I can't wait to to share this with my friend who knows everything about riding a motorcycle told me u can't shift ur motorcycle with out ur pulling ur clutch all the way u don't half to use it at all

Hello, do i need to close throttle completly? Or just tiny bit for unload transmission? Thanks :) cheers from Slovakia, great videos.
bit
cool video, thanks for uploading.
Duke is a bike that has more smoother feeling than most of the others, when shifting with clutch.
Do you have a similar smoothness shifting without clutch on bigger bikes as well?
Generally speaking; bigger the bike, stronger earthquake feeling when shifting, especially from neutral to 1. What about uploading a video on a bigger bike which doesn't have quickshifter? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I've been doing this ever since I was taught it in Total Control's Advanced Riding Clinic Level 2...every bike I do this on. The Duke doesn't have a quick shifter.
This is very common, I do something and people automatically ask to do another video of the same thing on a different bike...like getting my knee down. I have videos of me getting my knee down on over 10 different bikes...this is the same technique, bike doesn't matter.
@@MotoJitsu I didn't mean to challenge you like ok you did with a Duke but you can't do with another bike.
What I was trying to say is, I just wanted to be sure if it is possible to have same smooth shifting on a bigger bike. Because sometimes you can't get that kind of smooth transition between shifts even while using clutch on a bigger bike.
PS: I believe it is very acceptable for people to ask for more videos, which means your technique is highly appreciated. Speaking for myself, getting knee down is pushing limits too much that I am not interested in to be honest.
I hate written communication, I don't feel challenged or upset in anyway. 65% of what we say is non-verbal...so you're missing out on about 90% of what I'm saying through tone, rise and inflection of my voice, facial expressions, etc. Yes, you can do this on any bike with the same result. I did it on the Indian Darkhorse and on the Street Glide and my CBR 1000RR and my Hayabusa.
@@MotoJitsu Now I appreciate your maths as well, about calculating the percent of the missing part :)
Well maybe it's because I am not a native English speaker. On the other side, yes as it's written communication, I wanted to clear some points like mentioning being challenged or not. Thanks for the replies, don't let us miss your videos!
But yes, this can be done on any bike, and have the same smoothness, once you know how to do it really well...every bike I ride, I do this, no issues.
Just tried this, it's much much much better omg. I feel like having a quickshifter lol
❤️👍🏼
Will pre loading the shifter damage anything?
boy that windshield is da bomb .. a whole 6 square inches? :Þ
Not sure.

Can this be done on a turn from stop?
Gonna try this tomorrow morning. Why no comments here tho?
Weird, wouldn’t do this surely not good for the bike… don’t die dude.
@@YorkshireNoob I've tried. Only works sometimes and not consistent. It does goes in smooth. But it doesn't happened every time. I might not have done this right. Or it does have different effect with slipper clutch. I'm a total noob.
Can you do this video on a stand showing your foot? Do I have to pull the foot all the way up, or does the gear glide in alone?
Thanks
It glides in alone. Go try it, no need for another video.
@@MotoJitsu So I just have to put my food under the lever and let it slide up while doing the other thing?
when doing my motorcycle license test. I used the clutch with boredom. But as soon as a passed I never used the clutch since
It's an option.
Hey. Great tip! Can you do this for down shifting as well?? :)
I have a video about shifting coming up in a couple weeks!
@@MotoJitsu big fan here. where's your clutchless downshifting vid?
Would like to see you do this on your GS.. I have a 2001 R1150RT and am not sure if I should try this, lol
I can't on my GS, it has shift assist. I don't have to do this on the GS, just any pressure the gear goes into the next without doing anything with the throttle. Any bikes, this works. But you don't have to either...
@@MotoJitsu can you put up a video explaining the shift assist on your GS, please?
No need for a video..I don't need to use the clutch up or down shifting. It auto rev matches for me when down shifting and upshifting I don't have to release the throttle.
great vid Eddie, but you can actually do it on our bikes with GSAP. BMW style is preload then push up rest of way with throttle to get the upshift completed. However if we just preload and keep at that position you can clutchless shift as you describe in vid. I've done it and works fine, just tiny tiny throttle off and slips right into gear super smooth.
Ari Henning says not to put pressure on the shifter before shifting !! Please check his video and clarify on that 😊thanks .
If you're accelerating decently, a little pressure over a few seconds is fine. Just don't go resting your foot on the shift lever while cruising 😉
Who's that? I don't care what anyone says about it, I was taught how to do this in Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic Level 2 and been doing it ever since. It's fine for the bike, no issues whatsoever.
MotoJitsu
Show some respect. Don’t think ur the man just because you followed some lessons
Ari Henning says that "pre weighing" the shifter doesn't hurt anything and is good for beginners to learn this technique. So what are you talking about exactly?
what might b the cause for clunky shifts after clutching out, and what might prevent the quick shift going in gear
Technique
Do you not actually press up on the gear lever ?
This explains what happened to me the other day
Thanks man, great video 👍🏽
Could this possibly damage your transmission?
If it did, would I do it? Or would I make a video on how to do it? No, there's no risk to damage the transmission or any other part of the bike. lol
If done correctly, it won't. I don't exactly agree with Eddie saying that you should apply pressure to the shifter before you shift, I believe that doing that can cause eventual damage (but I'm not entirely certain as I haven't pulled apart an engine that has experienced Eddie's technique and an engine of clutchless shifting without pressure on the shifter). From how I clutchless shift, I'm prepared with my foot underneath the shifter but not adding any pressure. Then when I upshift, I cut throttle and push the shifter up, which is smoother than when I added pressure before. Ultimately, though, cutting the throttle for that small amount of time does the same thing as a clutch does - cuts the power delivery to the output shaft.
That way, you're forcing it vs letting it slide in easily....just a tad bit of pressure if fine.
hahaha
I have a 25 yr old Suzuki, you think this would apply as well? As usual thanks for the tips!
Im here on 2021 :D hope somebody answers my question, I want to learn this on my suzuki gsxr 600 srad, but Im curious at what rpm range i should do this or it doesnt matter at all?
Go and practice and see what works best
If you haven't already, check out my website for my new app, books, merch, affiliate links, courses, etc.
How does this affect the the gearbox for lifespan if doing this once or twice is ok but what if you're doing it all the time can it cause damage
it doesn't, if done correctly

when your flicking your hand to slide into the next gear. is it off abit on the throttle or fully close the throttle the back open again?
depends on how much you're on the gas.
The whole time I watched I was scared a car or pedestrian was gonna jet out in front of you. Pacific Beach Probably isnt the safest place to make a video but a great and informative vid nonetheless! Thanks Eddie 👌
Lol you were 100% more afraid than I was.
@@MotoJitsu haha I can see that!
lol
So do you keep pressure on the lever after a gear, or you ease up then put pressure on again for the next one?
Once it goes into the next gear. You just repeat the whole process.

Eddie, I couldn't quite tell from the video- when you twitch the throttle, are you rolling all the way off or or partially off?
Partially.
@@MotoJitsu Thank you for the clarification :)
You're welcome...it's just as fast as you can twitch your hand.
Make sure u put enough pressure on the shifter, or u will hit false neutrals.
So you're saying.. you dont need to close the throttle right? and we just need to put some little resistance on the shift levers and it will automatically go up?
Not all the way, just ease off then back on really quickly.
when I practice this, if I miss a gear or it just doesn't engage well how much can I harm my transmission by doing that?
Not hardly at all
Do you keep tention during the whole proces? Or do you only elevate your feet once you release the throttle?
Wonderfull video's. Just noticed some video's of you and i'm already loving it!
Many ways to do one thing
Thanks for another great video!
I tried this for the first time today. It shifted consistently, but the bike jerked forward moderately each time. I thought I might be rolling back onto the throttle too much when doing that "twitch" movement, but attempts to correct for that didn't work. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
Your answer is in your comment....you tried this for the first time today...do you expect yourself to be perfectly seamless and smooth the first time you do it? Lol I was taught how to do this in a course 3 years ago and been doing it ever since. You need so much more time to be able to do understand when and how much throttle and how much pressure on the peg, etc.
Does this chew up the clutch?
I’m a beginner and was wondering do you blimp the throttle all the way or half when changing gears
You only do that when rev-matching, if you want to.
If this is so much faster Is this what you do everytime on the track? And so you know if it causes damage shifting without the clutch?
Yes I do every up shift on track...no won't damage if done correctly
Trying this on my Harley Switchback tomorrow
:)
does this work on all bikes? im having trouble with this on my cbr 300r... it seems to be stuck in the gear until i pull in clutch
Yes. You're probably not accelerating fast enough...this isn't slowly getting faster, it's accelerating pretty quick...or maybe you don't have enough pressure on your foot peg.
@@MotoJitsu i figured it out immediately after watching your video, what happened was i watched another video and i tried it. what was differnt was the explanation. you explained it by saying, you must preload the lever wheras the other guy just said release gas. THANK-YOU SO MUCH for replying to my comment, and showing me this by explaining it differently in a detailed manner. ps. also when i knee down on the road, i notice i dont need to knee down all the way to make the turn, does this mean the turn is just not sharp enough? can you also do an advice video on holding the throttle for knee down right turns?
CH H if your knee touches the ground, doesn’t mean it must stay on the ground for the whole turn...why would it? You’re bringing the bike up as you exit so your knee will come off. Throttle control is the same regardless of the corner, you want to be accelerating through the corner, at least before half way.
How do I get it to go up without going into neutral?
I want to try this right NOW 😆 is it even possible on a 2001 Ducati monster? It seems like she (or he, or it, whatever you prefer to call your bike) ask for the clutch to shift, is it normal i keep thinking it could not work on my bike?
doesn't matter the bike....just depends on how you're doing it
good vid - and nice gloves, whats the make ?
linktr.ee/GregWidmar
Can we do the same for dropping gears? Say 5 to 4, 4 to 3..?
I don't ever downshift without the clutch nor has it ever been taught to me in 22 courses. If it was something important to do, I would have been taught it by now.
@@MotoJitsu Thanks for a prompt reply..
Got forced into speed shifting once with a busted clutch cable. Pain in the ass. Gotta shut the bike off for every stop and then start in gear again. Still it was easier then pushing the bike 5 miles back to the truck.
sure is!
What about downshifting no need to press clutch?
I always use the clutch downshifting unless the bike has a quickshifter down, which most don't.
After buying a bike yesterday, I've been practicing things like this. I know this isn't bad for the clutch, as some people say. But I've been told that you do wear out the actual gears of the gearbox quicker. Is this true? Bought a Kawasaki ER5 😁
No, unless you do it incorrectly.
@@MotoJitsu good to know! Will practice regularly. Let the summer come!
Sweet! :)
Ok so if this is possible, then whats the purpose of a quick-shifter?
I’m at work right now but imma get off in 3 more hours and try this on the r3
