This is the original recipe for the chili sauce on all Detroit Coney island hot dogs, today which came to Detroit by Greek immigrants in the early 1900s.

Hi Rudy! Really??? That is so very interesting to hear... hahahaha... who woulda thought, right? But the Greek meat sauce isn't anywhere NEAR a chili, per se... at least by what we normally define as a chili... 1 - there is no 'heat'... or chili... hahaha... and is the Coney Island 'chili' flavoured with cloves and cinnamon?
I am intrigued and will have to do some research. Thank you for the info and suggestion to look this up... it would be very interesting to figure out if this is what they use... thanks again and take care!!
UPDATE: It seems you were correct... the sauce is based on Greek/Macedonian origins... but it isn't quite the same as this one, but this could have been the origins.. the spicing of the current Coney Island sauce is different, but the method seems to be the same.
Thank you for that... so cool!! :)

Thanks for the video! In doing my research on Detroit Coney Dogs, I did find out that saltsa kima is the sauce used to put on the hot dogs like Rudy pointed out. The reason they are called Coney Islands are because the immigrants went to Coney Island when they came to New York and they were calling their hot dogs either Coney Islands or Red Hots. Hot Dogs was a term not many liked because people thought they were using real dogs. But it was the late 1800's early 1900's so I can see the confusion. When they migrated west, they took the "coney island" name with them and then added a version of the saltsa kima on top with onions and mustard. That's how it all began in 1917 on the corner of Michigan Ave and Lafayette. But

And I think people call it chili dogs is because the sauce is very similar to a chili. Some places do use chili. Both are good, though. :)

Actually, in Greek... we would basically just say keema/kima... ie: makaronia me kima, is spaghetti/pasta with keema... although, keema is also the generic term for ground meat... lamb keema, beef keema etc... saltsa just means sauce... and I have heard both saltsa keema and keema saltsa... however, language evolves, so in the US, those folks who created this could have said saltsa keema...whereas here where I grew up, keema saltsa is more common, at least to my ear... but, I am a non-native Greek speaker... it was my first language, but it has been superceded by English, so I am not an expert on it... but I am sure both would be understood by Greek speakers... good luck in your research...
