There are two holes on the tensioner and the pin goes in the second hole not the first when changing the belt . You didn't compress the tensioner enough to see the second hole . There should be half of the top hole showing when a new belt is properly tensioned and just the top edge of the hole after it stretches from use . The tensioner release tool is cheap on Ebay and worth keeping in the back of the car along with a spare belt .
