I love my 2007 M6 e64. I bought it new, so it cost the equivalent of $180k in todays dollars.
A set of tires last about 20k miles if you don't run hard at about $1500 a set, so bearings is really not that bad. Also, warm the puppy up before you push it above 5000 rpm (the break-in period limit).
It runs so good at speed. The feel on Michelin Pilot Sports (oem tire) is a slight understeer that feels right.
The smg is a manual 7 speed with a computer actuated hydraulic clutch. The dual clutch is still a smg. The manual clutch 6 speed trans doesn't have the preferred ratios.

Love me a good pure manual trans but ive driven the manual and i gotta say I prefer the smg. Smg was specifically designed by the engineers for this car. The 6MT was an afterthought. With most other cars i feel loss by not having a third pedal but not in this car. And smg should never be driven in auto anyway

Admittedly haven’t driven one with an SMG. You’re correct that the car benefits massively from swapping in a diff with a better final drive ratio; many manual V10 owners have done this and it totally changes the car. It’s on my list for sure

      @@NorthoftheWallGarageNice summary. I’m going on 196,000+ miles in 14 years on my 3.91 Dinan S2 6MT e60m5.
I have to laugh, every time I hear, “the engine was designed for the SMG”. The s85 v10 does not care what gear ratios are bolted up to it. It was the 3.62 gearing shared between the 7 speed SMG and 6 Speed, which was mismatched as an afterthought by the bean counters.
Bean counters shared the 3.62 for the 7 Speed SMG and the 6 Speed to cut costs. The 6 speed didn’t have the best gear ratios, when mated to the shared 3.62 - optimized with 7 gears. The bean counters jammed a square peg into a round hole, with a 3.62 and 6 gears.
While a 3.91, with 6 gears, optimized the torque curve of the s85.

08 M5 SMG owner - I agree that the smg has its downfalls maintenance wise but once you sure all that up I think I’d rather have the SMG. But I typically use it for road trips or extended freeway cause like you mentioned you can’t really feather in the R 1&2 gears so those are clunky . But that’s why I’d want a manual v10 to add to my smg. One for city use and one for highway haha

Great video! Straight forward talk without sounding and acting like some kind of euro car expert. I enjoy those vids too but can get so annoyed by how they bash this piece of machinery. I own and daily drive a 07 E63 Coupe. An amazing automobile! I love knowing it’s waiting in my garage and when she is warmed up and feeling frisky, pushing her to redline is damn near orgasmic. One of the best feelings on earth, pushing this beast to the brink!

I think a lot of your gripes with the driving experience is due to the fact that you have an E64. My E63 feels rigid, though body roll is really of main concern. Everything else is basically dialed for a GT cruiser.

Admittedly wish I had the coupe sometimes! Good feedback - thanks

Nice video! I have a 2008 M6 Dinan SMG. I'm contemplating on trading in or selling it. On the hands, I really want to keep it because of the V10.

Thank you! That’s awesome that you have Dinan work done to your car. A 5.8L stroker has crossed my mind.. incredible builds they create. Carbahn (Steve Dinans new company) is doing the same work, but it’s $36k for an engine build! So tempted to pick up a cheap M5 SMG.. this engine is going to be revered in the near future I think!
