Finally, an owner that actually understands these machines. They are super cars that need proper maintenance like any other super car. I have 2 E60 M5s, SMG pump died on my daily at only 50k miles. Going to upgrade it with a MLR pump myself. And yeah, I daily it, I can’t drive any thing else. If you do the work yourself? These are a dream!
I have the same car (2007 E64) with the SMG. After all the updates and 13 oil changes in 26 months it's gone 45k Miles in that time with 154k on it now. It lives in Florida and has been to New England 4 times and southern California once. I'm in the panhandle and it been to Miami 5 times. I've had the E39 M5 and E60 M5 too. If you can do your own work these cars are a blast. 20mpg on the highway is not great.... but gotta pay to play.
@@normanschenck6906 Nice! That’s what I’m talking about. I replaced SMG e-motor, refreshed o-rings, and serviced the transmission. It’s shifting beautifully!
i hello im from vietnam,I have an m6 e63, smg is having a problem, when I change gear it has a delay of about 1 second before it switches to the next gear. :(( , In Vietnam there are only about 3 m6 e63s and I don't know what to do with the smg
There is another gentleman that has a channel focused on his E63 V10, while he doesn't have a manual, he also says most of what you say. staying on top of Bearings, Vanos and Actuators is key. I love those cars, to me they are supercars. they are beautiful, fast and sound amazing. I do not have one yet but I have had a chance at two manuals but because of my procrastination and the timing wasn't right, they got snapped up in a blur. I really want a manual but if I can't find one, I may go after a F13. I want to thank you like I thanked him thank you for the great video and keep the videos coming about your journey with your amazing machine. I may be joining you guys soon. BTW, if you would like to see his channel it's called "CRAZY DAY DRIVE" I'm ROC.
I didn't even know these v10 m5 existed until 6 months ago. I love the shape and the sound. I will buy one in thailand with SMG only for 30k to 45k depending on the condition.
I loved watching this video, very nice! I wish folks would let their cars warm up fully before getting on them. Thanks for posting, the cars sounds awesome!
@@NorthoftheWallGarage Thanks! I freaking love this thing. It’s not for everyone, but if you understand its mission is to illicit an emotional response, you’ll love it. 😎
Lmao great comment but not the case here! Just away for the winter. Needs some front suspension TLC this spring.. going to do the throttle actuators myself over the winter in the garage.
The smg gets a lot more bad reviews in the US as it has a lower level tune compared to the European spec, it's a great upgrade to any US car. The smg 7 speed ratios are much better suited to the v10 and as you mentioned on manuals 1st and 2nd gears are too tall, the smg does not have that problem, a well sorted smg is a joy to drive. Agree totally your view points on preventative maintenance , the throttle bodies are killed by chatter caused by among other things low battery voltage and lots of modules are so voltage sensitive. Rod bearing are more of a problem as you said with not allowing a warm up and 15k mile oil changed as per Bmw is madness. Had 2005 my m6 smg coupe for 8 years and all it has cost over normal maintenance is one throttle body actuator when I first bought it ( selling garage must of known) and recently a battery..that's it !

I got this car, SMG version all the way from 23000 km to 65000 km . Sold it , just cause kids were coming into equation . Cried back then. Looking forward to include it again in my garage. This thing is a rarity anymore and prices will only go North. Nothing comes close to this experience from BMW, anything newer is faster, more reliable, more efficient indeed. You don't get the experience.
The Audi V10s were cool but significantly detuned from their Lamborghini counterparts. I like the BMW V10 because it was the best they could offer at the time! If you’re going automatic, the S8s transmission is likely much more reliable than the BMW SMG. If you can find a manual M6, I’d go that route
Something is special about the BMW m6 v10 as a fragile monster. Its is extremely rewarding to drive even with the SMG (which is what I own). Comparing that to my '18 mustang gt, it is a different experience than your modern day muscle car as it would be comparable to power. I love my GT as it is good at all things and reliable, but the BMW you can tell is very special. It behaves so differently than everything around and it definitely sounds like nothing on the road which sets you apart from everyone. The Audi seems more like a road going car being AWD, whereas the BMW seems more track capable and it being a RWD makes all the difference for me.
Before commenting on convertible, drive one. I have loved mine since new in 2007. Quiet, comfortable, and extra fun when weather permits top down cruising. I have consistently seen 19 mpg hwy since new at 70-80 mph.
if you buy a car from 2006 that has an F1 engine in it, you would expect to spend some money on it, doesn't make it a piece of shit that just makes you delusional

SMG Manual is great.
Original owner of 2007 M6 e64 here.
Few problems last 17 years.
Awesome - thanks for the feedback and channel rec!
Rod Bearings being maintenance items is criminal wtf BMW!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Great video. I have a 2009 M6 E63 6MT M6, interlagos blue with silverstone interior. These cars are severely undervalued, especially manual.
Thanks for the video. I am a big fan / user of this car. How and where I can change SMG to manual?
Thanks! I believe you can source a manual from an E46 M3 to mate up to the engine. Folks with SMGs have done this - lots of info online
Great video,a man that really knows his ride and tells it like it is.

Compared to other v10s the Maintenace is palatable on this car. And there are some nice diy friendly performance mods for this car to.
Agreed - as long as you know about the common issues it's not a huge deal
Good that its underappreciated, i want one lmao 😂 Dont appreciate them so price wont go up
Which car would you prefer the M6 or the Audi S8 V10? Just wondering I’m looking into both

Hey bro i also have a bmw m6 convertible what spoiler is that?
Unfortunately I do not know! Bought it with the spoiler on it. May eventually remove it you are interested
The SMG tranyy is a good one, people just whine too frickin much about everything.
What exhaust you have?
Unfortunately I don’t know. Appears to be custom - it’s a bit loud on cold starts honestly.. would like to switch to a proper brand name

It's not misunderstood at all. If I have to spend 2k a year for maintenance of an engine, that's just a pos.

Some things are worth the trouble, the s85 is definitely one of those things.want reliability go buy a toyota you'll even get extra cup holders..😂.
Every exotic car ever is a POS then 🤷♂️
@@NorthoftheWallGarage well, yes. You can have engines with a lot of power that don't break all the time.
