  • Greetings! Today I am getting ready to prepare some peach butter and needed to peel my peaches. I thought this would be a good time to share with you some canning basics on how to properly peel peaches to get ready for canning.
I am not canning my peaches today, because my peaches are a little too ripe. So I am going to make peach butter. However this is the same way you would peel peaches for sliced canned peaches in syrup or even for a quick peach cobbler. You could also just peel and slice and store in zip top freezer bags and freeze for up to a year if you like and use for smoothies and desserts!
All you really need is some boiling water and a bowl with water and ice cubes. Then the peaches and the temperature do the rest for you. You will end up with much less waste than if you peeled them with a veggie peeler and you will have a beautiful smooth peach to slice and can.
I hope this helps you understand what to do when you get your peach canning or prep underway!
I hope you try this and I hope you love it!
    Happy Canning!

I absolutely adore this method!!! I just finished canning diced peaches and making jam out of over 100lbs of peaches from my tree last week. This method made it a snap to peel and pit them all.

Mmmm, peaches! :0) ...We actually still have them in the stores up here (Anchorage) but of course they're shipped up. No pickin' em off any trees around here :p... Now that you've peeled those, I sure hope one of your future videos will be of you using them in a recipe!!! Happy TGIF Noreen & Rick ~♡

I just wanted to tell you, Noreen that you have encouraged me to try my hand at canning. I love your videos and you make it not seem so scary. I have now started canning and have so far managed 4 pints of jalapenos, 8 half pints of grape jelly, 8 half pints of apple butter, 8 pints of pear slices and 8 pints of spicy bean soup. Today I will be attempting peach jam. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos. You have no idea what you've started here! LOL :)

The purpose of the ice bath is just as scientific as the purpose of the boiling water. Heat causes things to expand. Cold causes things to contract. Cutting the "X" in the skin then heating quickly and cooling quickly causes the peach to expand ever so slightly and then contract ever sol slightly so that the skin loosens and will be easier to remove. It helps to separate the skin from the flesh of the fruit.

I didn't even know that peach butter was a thing, until last week! As soon as I read about it, I cooked some up an canned it. Oh my goodness. So wonderful. I love how easy the peaches are to peel. I was able to just pick it off with my fingers, and then break up the peaches and remove the pits with my hands. I wish that apples were so easy!

I love how easy your peels came off. I think my peaches weren't quite ripe enough. the peels came off in really small pieces and it was pretty time consuming today. Thanks for the upload!

Heck I love fresh peaches and I am gonna use this method to get rid of the skin as that part I just don't care for and I hate the waste of knife peeling (I am just no good at knife peeling since arthritis set in). Thank-you so much for sharing this tidbit.

I canned peaches today. I blanched them for 1 minute before peeling, but they didn't peel like yours did! I did not cut the X in them first, though. I'll give that a try next time. Thanks!

Torani Friday is going to only be every other Friday now that we are getting into the fall. I have lots of other things I want to get too and the Torani Friday videos are not getting the numbers I had hoped for.

I've successfully done this before...but it did not work this time...maybe they weren't ripe enough

I'm just curious. Is the purpose of the ice bath to cool them so you can handle them, or to stop the process of "cooking"?
