  • Modified Gravely Versus Stock Gravely Cleaner Cut. What's going on guys Blake Hawthorn it's his turf. I have Jason Shepherd here with Good Sheps Lawn Service, we're going to be putting the Gravely Pro-Turn 148 with modifications against the Gravely Pro-Turn ZX 52 stock. Alright guys so he has his modified Gravley Pro Turn 148. He's done all kinds of stuff i mean you know stole blades from other mower companies, you know made adjustments to it. I mean this is like a black market mower actually but over here I have them out of the crate gravely, stock how they come, legal, everything's by the book, we're going to put on toe to toe and see with one does better. All seriousness though, Jason just take a few minutes, tell us a little bit about what the modifications that you've made to the mower deck for cut quality. So we can see adjustments from like mine that standard, you know, stock out of the crate. One of the things done to the Pro turn 148 the mower here is the stock blades kind of sit recessed up into the deck. So one of the things that I did was I put three washers, to drop that blade down more even with the baffle. And so I've noticed that, that gives me a cleaner cut. Another thing is I had this Scag high lift blades on there. When I ordered them they didn't quite fit so I actually had to take a grinder to them and shave about a 16th inch off. And now they work perfect. one of the things that I've noticed is they get a lot more vacuum, because of the fin on the blade is a lot higher. I feel like it gets more suction. So what you're going to see today like he said he's got the high lift blades over here he's put the spacers on there. He's going to be running a little bit different. We both have open shoots on there. I do mine with this modified shoot I'll probably lower it down. As we get on some other parts of the property, but so it can truly kind of be toe to toe. Very even comparison. We're going to leave up just the same, we're going to set the deck high to two and a half inches, and we're going to start cutting this so you're ready. All right, you're going to take the left side of the yard. I'm going to take the right side of the yard. And let's see, I'm going to leave it it's not a race. This is not a race we want to be good comparison so you pick your speed, I'll kind of try to match you, and let's just get this thing cut.
    But those blades and those highlight blades I think they were the game changer today just for better cut quality for sure. I think the finish. The cut on the Pro Turn 148 with Scag high lift blades is better than the Pro Turn ZX 52 with stock blades. The high lift blades are something that can be ordered and put on there you did have to make some modifications to it. Yeah, so those high lift blades there underneath his deck that really didn't do it the other thing was on the side discharge. The thing that I noticed you pointed it out while we were mowing is just like how smooth even yours was at how, you know, this rubber flap was just really pushing mine right out the side of the deck. And when you step back here guys you can really see it. I mean you can just see all across here where my side discharge went, but if you walk over here to the back half of the property that he did. It's really just evenly dispersed across the lawn. .
    These are great units but find you, you know, find you a dealer find GMO or that'll make you money and just get out there and get to mo and my first unit was a residential unit. I have 4000 hours on it, I did the math I've profited over $140,000 with that unit. It cost me $5k. I've had mowers that cost me $16,000, but I can tell you I lost a lot more money than I actually paid for the mower.

    My mower is one of the first prototypes.It is a Pro-turn 460 with the X-factor deck and I run Rotory 15-6083 blade during the summer with NO adjustment. It was one of the first issues with the mower I had with cut quality. I don't think it has much to do with the blade placement but more with the "LIFT" on the blades. At least for us Florida guys that cut Bahia , Augustine and Zoysia . But I will say that these blades are flat and do not have the stock 1/4 " bend in them.When I installed these blades it changed the cutting height scale .25. It measured out to be exactly a 1/4" difference. I fill these blades do a great job. My reasoning for doubting the blade placement is because I run Gator mulching blades from Oct to March and they do not have nearly the lift but work really well keeping things clean. I do run shorter cutting heights in the fall and winter also. Just sharing some thought 🤔

      I use to have one of those lol. Sold it in March Haha. No I just haven't ever messed with the deck, baffles or spacers and Jason releveled his deck, tilted it a quarter inch forward then added washers for blade spacers and ground down some high lift blades to fit on his mower.

    So what was your thoughts on the side discharge you were saying? Did he block off the discharge or should you let it come out the side?

    Must modify on rhat mower and all ferris zero turns; Get the 24x12x12 wheels, change out the tires to a carlisle grass master or turf master, maybe even space out the rear wheels alittle to help grip. Ferris guys...do this and its wayyyy better

      Hey Jeff! Thank you for this tip! Where do you purchase the wheels? Amazon? or a local dealer? Also, this makes a lot of sense, wider is better! lol

    You're comparing a 100 series (commercial mower) to a zx series (residential mower)... Apples to oranges

    • @itshisturf23
      @itshisturf23  5 лет назад

      The zx is entry level commercial. But as far as performance I own a 100 and 200 series and this ZX will compete all day long. Honesty a great unit.
