  • Today Brandon and I got to use the Gravely ProTurn 460 a little more and finally got to shooting some footage on the lawn mower. We had a crazy last couple of weeks but finally got to do our initial review on the ProTurn 460.
    A lot of you guys have been asking to see the Gravely ProTurn 460 on the channel, and thanks to Gravely's new ambassador program, we were able to get our hands on one. Big shoutout and thank you to you guys for supporting us, and for Gravely for sending a unit our way.
    We will definitely be doing more review videos as we go on the Graavely over fall. We have the unit for the next 2 months or so, and I am excited to weigh in more once we have a few more hours on it.
    What do you guys think about the Gravely ProTurn 460? How many hours do you guys have on yours if you've been running them this season. Leave me a comment down below!

      Used to own one, actually the proturn 260 60in with a 29hp Kohler, tried different blades and at one point thought about pouring gas on it and set it on fire. Talked to the dealer and he said that they only cut well with the original blades, I went back to the original and recalibrated the deck, long story short, best cutting mower I've ever owned, even better than my exmark. Sold it because I could not get part for it from a couple of dealers for the occasional repairs and hate waiting for parts purchased online. I've owned Exmark, JD, Ferris, Snapper Pro, same deck as Ferris and Husqvarna and IMO this is was the best cutting deck, even though it wasn't a series II

      Brian what advice or thoughts could you give to people ,who don't own there own mowing business, but would like to own a commercial lawn mower for their home versus using a typical residential lawn mower? Could you discuss this in a video in the future?

      Did you sharpen the blades on the Gravley before the cuts or are they from the factory? I'm sure your ExMark was sharp.

    After owning two 460's I can say they are very well built and easy to work on. The pulleys and spindles are very good on gravely machines. My 160Z we retired and I keep here at my house with 2 acres has 2000 hours and original spindles. They are just now starting to hummmmmm slightly so I suspect in a year or so I will have to replace them. Now with that said we no longer run gravely. The xfactor deck sucks in northern turf. If its not clumping from sneezing too hard on the lawn then its laying out windrows of grass. It directs the grass down and out and mostly out the front of the discharge opening. That in turn leaves the windrows of top the lawn. Used to have to double cut almost every lawn every week. Since switching to scag V+ 3 years ago I haven't double cut a single lawn. That says it all. Hell the same goes for Exmark. I was shocked to see you bought an Exmark. Damp or heavy growth and they leave clumps. Been down the ultra cut road as well. I chastised gravely so hard on their facebook page Dan Ariens actually replied to me directly. I have beta tested stuff for Gravely as well.

    I demo'd several brands of mowers including the Exmark you have over about a 2 month period before pulling the trigger on this 460...and what sold me on this mower were 2 things..COMFORT and BUILD-QUALITY..I don't think there is a more comfortable or stronger built zt mower on the market..and I believe it to be the best looking ZT on the market also.

    Change to scag high lifts on this deck and baffles half down. I cut in Missouri and it cuts better than my exmark, or the scag, toro, or Wright that I demoed for months. I’m at 880 hours and finally went through deck and drive belts this summer. Also am replacing two deck pulley this weekend. Not bad for 880 hours though.

  • @branlmn8172
    @branlmn8172 5 лет назад

    great video love that you did a comparison cut quality from the Exmark to the Gravely. I'm from down ohio and my local dealer was saying that every so often depending on the dealer the bottom of the deck has a baffle that can be adjusted to allow for more suction or to allow the grass to stay in the deck longer to cut real fine. And it works real well down south where you have more sandand grass is lot more dryer but up north they I have found that we are having issues with that since are grass is thicker and a lot more set. So check to see where exactly that baffle is and maybe that will help with a better discharge

  • @Wheeler_Family_Adventures
    @Wheeler_Family_Adventures 5 лет назад +3

    If you look under the deck, if it’s like mine it has adjustable “baffles” under it. You adjust these base on your type of grass and conditioning. I have mine just under the blades

    Man the Gravely cut quality with mulch kit down south in wet St Aug grass in South Louisiana is phenomenal . I’ve had clients ask if I cut the lawn with the rider because they have never seen stripes in their grass. This is residential with the compact pro 34. I’m convinced that there are mowers for every scenario

  • @dieseldee9537
    @dieseldee9537 5 лет назад +1

    We own 9 of them! They handle hills really well, but I do agree switch blades the stock ones are junk. If you remove the rubber flap on the shout blocker it disperses a lot better but still clumps a little when wet. As far as the belts go usually we get about 500-600 hrs on a belt. Never had any engine issues with that engine. It has tons of power and the power flow that gravely has is super strong. The dealer we get ours from is the biggest one where I live so I get to try the new ones before they are up for sale and the gravely rep told me that the power flow tube actually has to be made by Goodyear be the power flow puts out that much pressure. With a few minor adjustments these things rock.

  • @alexcampbell5218
    @alexcampbell5218 5 лет назад +1

    I have the 460 and 252. I've gotten the best cut quality from them by completely removing the front adjustable baffles. Really surprised gravely moved the gas tank switch on the 400s. Mine has it right next to the cup holder. 1200 hours on the 460 and no real issues with it. I'm currently in the process of switching to either ferris or scag...

  • @jakeschisler7525
    @jakeschisler7525 5 лет назад +3

    I have a Gravely, had it 4 years. I only cut my 5 acres, it still has factory belts on it. What I don't like about it is the opening should be more open. You can adjust the baffles for cutting wet grass. I live in Florida and when turning peels grass up pretty easy like you said. The salesman talked me out of buying a Scag. Most companies that cut grass use a Scag or Toro, for the most part. I would love to have that air ride seat. I a lot of time run Gator blades, but here to the sandy soil eats blades like crazy. But one thing I can run pretty fast getting it cut, my neighbor's use a John Deere and other has a Bad Boy and I could use a push mower faster than what they cut.

    The discharge debris and having to double cut every lawn is why we switched from exmark and gravely (2 460's and a 160) to the V+ 4 years ago. Ain't going back no more no more no more hit the road jack cause I ain't going back no more lol. In 4 years I have had to double cut only a hand full of lawns. No weekly lawns at all. It has saved us so much time and fual. When I got a chance to talk to a scag big wig I pleaded with him to not make any changes to the V+ deck lol. He said you'd be surprised how many times they hear that and that is why they keep that deck on their main line of mowers still.

    From Texas- Buddy of mine bought the ExMark 60" & we both love it. I bought an ole 50" rzt Cub Cadet for $200 with a Kohler Engine & it's been good for the last 5yrs. I got 600hrs on it. Its cut many acres of grass but that ExMark is a Cadillac! $7k for ExMark & we both looked at Gravely Zero Turns but damn they too high dollar! $7I to $11k is a big difference. I know there are different models but the ExMark is hard to beat. Anything is hard to beat my Cub Cadet though. It just beats the hell out of me but it cuts better than the ExMark, imo. However that ExMark is so comfortable for all day cutting. Normally takes me 3days of non stop cutting to knock out all of our properties.

    Bought a pro Turn 260 this year, its almost the same as the 460 same transmission and deck, anyways I love mine I'm sure there is better but mine stripes awesome just depends on the turf I live in southern Tennessee the only 2 issues with mine is that it clumps damp or wet grass even with chute off and it does leave stragglers depending on the turf but overall I satisfied

    Great video as usual, thanks for posting! I like how these companies are offering the mowers with chute blockers, the one on this Gravely looks terrible though. I really like the foot operated one on the Ex-Mark's. The lever looks to be a pain to get to while mowing. I have Qwikchute chute blockers on both my Bobcat's, they are amazing and worth every penny. Judging it by the looks it just seems like they could of put a little more time into it.

    Gravely’s are very popular in southern East Texas. The pro turn 460 is similar to the hustler super z. Y’all should review the hustler super z with the Kholer efi or vanguard motor in a 60 inch deck. The type of grass that is in the are of southern East Texas are made for the gravely and hustler.

    We run gravely pro stance 52's. They have the original xfactor deck. They have the same problem with the stragglers. Heard the xfactor 2 deck was designed to help curb that. Kind of disappointed to hear that it still does it. Especially since my boss is considering purchasing a pro turn 260. Great looking mower but I'd rather have something that cuts better. We run an older exmark stand on and its cut quality is far better!

    I think the John Deere’s and the exmark have the best cut on the market right now. The thing I like about the Deere is it is built very solid and Deere’s come with a ton of options and accessories that u can add on. A cool feature with Deere is the mulch on demand deck u can go from discharge to mulch with a push of a button. With mulching the cut is very good. The exmark vantage 2 looks nice as well. I really don’t think u can go wrong with any of the big name brands in the market now Brian.

    You can really hear the blades slow down when you accelerated on the Exmark, I'm suprised you don't see it in the cut quality. That gravely looks stout though.

    Anyone know anything about Gravely? Or have this issue? I've got a pro turn 152. I've leveled it, pitched it the best i could. But it doesn't want to cut right. It barely cuts on any height unless i basically put the deck to the ground. kinda lost, my gravely dealer wasn't helpful. I am going to adjust the baffles and see if that helps though

    I'll take your word on the cut quality. You've been doing this for a while now. I don't think you can go wrong with an exmark. I just keep wondering about the toro 4000 Series. Lol, this one was 3 years ago.

    Are you running OEM blades on the Ex Mark and the Gravely? Are both sets of blades sparpened at the beginning of the comparison? Are the decks on each mower set up the same, meaning measurements from front to ground/back to ground (1/4 difference? Or whatever the recommendation is?)

    Did you check the blades? I have never known a Gravely to do a sub excellent cut. Sounds like the middle blade could be a 1/2 to a inch longer. Down south we have to mowe wet. Or we just get further and further behind during the summer months.

    Just a observation. I noticed you use the mower with the shoot down. You will get better airflow with the flap up or as I do the first thing I remove. In the toro Manuel that actually suggest using the mower flap in high cutting conditions. What I’ve noticed is when the grass comes out the side it hits the flap then it pushes the grass into the ground without letting it scatter properly. Just my thoughts

    • @JohnnyMow
      @JohnnyMow 5 лет назад +1

      Not leaving the flap down. Sorry

    • @BriansLawnMaintenance

      On the exmark or Gravely? I usually run my Exmark flipped up, but the OCD helps deflect still. I can’t remove the Gravely one I don’t believe with this OCD. But I haven’t messed with it yet, bet so dang busy

    • @stepside2839

      Exactly!!.. and a chute blocker with flap down is Double Jeopardy.
      Anything less than a 90° exit to the ground limits clipping scatter.

    Is there anything advice you can offer to help reduce clumping? We’ve been having some issues with that lately. Is it just the dampness of the grass or is it maybe just an evacuation problem? Southwestern Ohio we’ve been getting a lot of rain lately as well.

  • @brandonharmon7523
    @brandonharmon7523 5 лет назад +3

    You can't compare the discharge between the two units when you have the discharge chute on the gravely (i know, you can't flip it up) and you're full open with the ocdc on the laser.

    • @BriansLawnMaintenance
      @BriansLawnMaintenance  5 лет назад +1

      They both were clumping that day, it was wet. But, the discharging shouldn’t have anything to do with the cut quality on this weekly growth, just sayin

    Hey @Brian's Lawn Maintenance, I got to say that @Gravely manufactures really know how to build a real mower in my opinion. I have a 2005 Gravely 272 Z that has 920 hours on it I love it to death but I love mine better than the new ones. Something I wish they made in todays world with the new ones is the Hydraulic mower deck, some people say that is a waste but its easier to move the deck, but don't get me wrong I do love my eXmark Lazer-Z with some smaller spaces. But I've only had to put in a new Hydraulic Pump and that was it, just got to say the new Gravely's aren't as good as the old ones. P.S. I love your channel and your videos, I would love to be like you when I grow up cause you WORK FOR IT in life, Gravely & eXmark are the best in my opinion, I would hope your channel grows over the years you deserve it in life cause you got this far, that its going to lead you down a great path.

    Hey Brian! I’ve got a couple questions... I just started my company beginning of this 2018 season but I’ve been doing this since 2002. I’m wondering if I should start up a channel to document the “rise and grind” to get to your level? I will get to your level. I’m in Florida, we mow almost literally year-round. I am getting into RUclips more and more and just don’t know if that content would be accepted by the online community. Let me know if you can tell me anything! Thank you!
